Michael Parker

Dr. Michael W. Parker, Sr., Ph.D./DSW is a National Institute on Aging (NIA) Post Doctoral Fellow from the University of Michigan, who is currently a tenured, Associate Professor at the University of Alabama. He also serves as a Board Member with the University of Alabama's Center for Mental Health and Aging, and holds an adjunctive appointment with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine, where he has active collaborations with interdisciplinary teams of faculty affiliated with UAB. He was selected by the John A. Hartford Foundation as one of ten Geriatric Faculty Scholars nationally in 2002. He is a co-investigator with the NIA-funded UAB Alzheimer's Family Support Center, and he is a research scientist with the U.S. Air War College in Montgomery, AL. He has served as the founding Chair, Aging Veterans and their Families, Gerontological Society of America, and as the principal investigator (PI) on John A. Hartford Foundation and Department of Defense funded research related to health promotion, elder care, successful aging, and spirituality, and as a co-investigator on National Institute of Aging (NIA) RO1 longitudinal research related to the health and mobility of 1,000 Alabama community-dwelling residents over the age of 65. He is the past President of the West Alabama Officers Association, and is a member of two state planning groups on osteoporosis and arthritis.

John Thill

Rev. John Thill was a senior pastor for 24 years, serving three churches, one of which he founded and served for 18 years. From 1995 to 1998 he worked for Southern California Presbyterian Homes as counselor, resident service coordinator, and housing administrator. From 1998 to 2004 he was President and CEO of Life Services, a not-for-profit elder care company doing conservatorships, care and trust management, and family counseling.

Joe Burchill

Rev. Joe Burchill is a graduate of Toccoa Falls College, Toccoa, GA. In 1997, he completed a master’s degree in Adult and Community Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Ministry experiences includes serving as a Youth Pastor, Christian Education Pastor, and District Director of Education. He is currently on the National Office Staff for The Christian and Missionary Alliance in the Life Impact Ministries Office. He is a frequent conference speaker, conference director, and is involved in editing and writing. Joe is the founder of the Seniors Ministry for the WPA District of the C&MA involving over 3,000 individuals over the age of 60. In 2002, he was appointed the C&MA National Director of Retire and Refocus Ministries working with adults over the age of 55. Joe loves to read, cook, travel, and serve in his local church in the music and adult education departments. He and his wife Joy have two teenage children, Beth and Nathan, and live in Lancaster, PA.

Dr. James L. Knapp

James L. Knapp is professor of sociology at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, Oklahoma. Dr. Knapp completed his undergraduate degree in business administration and his Master’s degree in education at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas, and his Ph.D. in sociology at the University of North Texas. Dr. Knapp has served in an advisory capacity to a number of groups including the Oklahoma House of Representatives. He has made presentations at national and international conferences on aging and his work has been published in numerous academic journals as well as Christian publications like the Gospel Advocate, Wineskins, and the Christian Chronicle.

David C. Le Shana

David Le Shana’s ministry has spanned over 55 years, serving the church and Christian higher education. As an evangelist, minister, and educator he has been used of God to further his Kingdom at home and abroad.
His work in Christian higher education began as a member of the staff of Taylor University. Later he served as president of George Fox University, Seattle Pacific University, and Western Evangelical Seminary (now George Fox Evangelical Seminary).

Jim Hughes

Jim Hughes is the President of Productive Aging Resources, which has two emphasizes: training people in church ministry with middle and older adults and equipping caregivers in how to more easily help care for their aging and frail loved ones. Jim has authored two books—How to Build a Positive Senior Adult Ministry and Helping Your Aging Loved Ones: The Caregiving Process.
The senior adult ministry he developed at the Skillman Church of Christ in Dallas, Texas, was cited in 2006 as exemplary in two national magazines, Church Executive and Journal of Religion, Spirituality, and Aging, and in the book, The Graying of the Flock.

Debra Laine

Debra Laine has been the Faith Based Support Coordinator at the Arrowhead Area Agency on Aging in northeastern Minnesota since 2004. She networks with 450 mostly small, rural faith communities in the region and helps them develop programs to serve older adults and to begin exploring 50+ ministry. She is responsible for education programs and equally enjoys empowering faith communities to work together to do what they cannot do alone. She feels that being a resource to faith communities through program implementation and technical assistance are keys to successfully meeting the needs of older adults and boomers.

Ben E. Dickerson, Emeritus Director/Professor, Center for Aging & Community, University of Indianapolis is a native Texan, born and raised in Houston. He also was Director/Professor, Institute of Gerontological Studies, Baylor University for 22 years, and Professor, Stephen F. Austin State University for 11 years. Dickerson served in the U.S. Army Reserves and holds the rank of Colonel.

Pete Menconi

Born and raised in Chicago, Pete Menconi is a card-carrying member of Cub Fans Anonymous. He graduated from the University of Illinois, College of Dentistry and practiced dentistry for 22 years in private practice, in the U.S. Army and in a mission hospital in Kenya, East Africa. In addition, Pete has a M.S. in Counseling Psychology and several years of seminary training. He has been a commodity futures floor trader, a speaker with the American Dental Society, and a broker of medical and dental practices. He has co-written a nine-book Bible study series and several other books and articles. He also serves as the Executive Pastor at Northshore Baptist Church in Bothell, WA. Together with his wife, they serve as co-directors of 2nd ½ for Him Ministries of the Baptist General Conference. Leona Bergstrom

Leona Bergstrom is Director of Lifetime Ministries, a division of ChurchHealth, a ministry dedicated to assisting churches in developing powerful and effective programs for and by older adults. Along with Richard, Leona is co-director of 2nd ½ for Him Ministries of the Baptist General Conference. Leona has a B.A. degree in Sociology from Westmont College, Santa Barbara, California (1973). She is a Certified Aging Service Professional having completed certificate programs in Retirement Housing Administration, Human Service Management, and Project Management. She has worked in the field of gerontology for 30 years, planning, implementing, and managing a variety of social and health care programs for the elderly. She most recently served as Director of Programs for CRISTA Senior Community in Seattle, WA. Previously she has served as Director of Senior Health for St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham, Washington, Community outreach educator for the Area Agency on Aging, and as the Chair of the gerontology certificate program at Western Washington University. She is coauthor of the book, Amazing Grays: Unleashing the Power of Age in Your Congregation. She has also authored curriculum for the Northwest Area Agency on Aging entitled, “Caregiver Support: Reaching Out to Those Who Care for Others, A Guide for Communities of Faith.”

Rod Toews

Rev. Rod Toews has been in full-time ministry since 1958. He is a graduate of University of Nebraska at Omaha and Bethel Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. In recognition for his achievements and contributions in the field of Christian Education in Canada and also in the United States he received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Canada’s Briercrest Biblical Seminary in Caronport, Saskatchewan in 1998.
Rev. Toews was born in Canada and spent the first 18 years of his life there. After graduation from the University and Seminary he has served for churches in California and served with Christian Publishers in the United States and Canada. Mr. Toews has been involved in Christian Education ministries throughout the U.S. and Canada. He was instrumental in organizing national Christian Education programs. Dr. David Gallagher

Dr. Dave Gallagher is a nationally known author, speaker, and pastor. He is also on staff at Green Lake Conference Center in Green Lake, Wisconsin. He is a widely respected authority and has written extensively in the field of pastoral ministry, outreach, small groups, loss and grief and middle, senior, and elderly adult ministry. His recent books include Healing Takes Time (Liturgical Press, 2005) and Senior Adult Ministry in the 21st Century (Wipf & Stock Publishers, 2006, originally by Group Publishing, 2002).
Dr. Gallagher served as the Senior Pastor of Palm West Community Church in Sun City West, Arizona, a congregation designed specifically to reach adults over age 50. In the ten years he served as pastor, membership and attendance tripled and missions' giving grew from 10 percent to 19 percent. In 2000 the church held a mortgage burning ceremony. Dr. Gallagher led the members and friends to sacrificially raise over $2.5M toward phase two and on Thanksgiving Sunday, 2005, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for a $3.6M worship center. On Palm Sunday 2007 the worship center was dedicated—debt free and on February 24, 2008, he was honored as Pastor Emeritus.

Rev. Chris Holck

Rev. Chris Holck has served in three Evangelical Free Churches between 1986–2008. Chris’ interest in older adult ministry was sparked while serving in his last church, which was located in a resort area. He found a new challenge in connecting to and folding in the seasonal attenders or “snow birds” who fly north for the summer.
In January of 2008 he launched a special study for the Evangelical Free Church of America. Out of that study, a new ministry has been birthed called EFCA Encore, which exists to reach and unleash older adults for the cause of Christ during their encore years of life. His study has allowed him to travel extensively to build a network of contacts, consult with churches, and write articles intended to be used by local churches seeking to be innovators in the new paradigm of older adult ministries.

Harley Schreck

Harley Schreck is an anthropologist teaching at Bethel University in Arden Hills, MN, and is the founder and program director of the MA Gerontology program at Bethel. He has focused his research and practice on older adults living in urban areas. His dissertation, Helping the Needy Elderly in Urban America: an Analysis of Volunteerism in Strengthening Neighborhood Support Systems for Homebound Elderly Persons in Seattle, Washington," explored the nature of generosity in urban life (this was published by University Press of America in 2000).
More recently he has been researching the effects of urban change on older adults living in Northeast Minneapolis. Results were published in a 2006 book, Community and Caring: Older Persons, Intergenerational Relations, and Change in an Urban Community. Presently, his focus is on the role of local church in helping to build inclusive, multi-generational communities that provide rich support and opportunities for church for older adults.

Theresa McKenna

Theresa McKenna became a single parent in 1987 and, following a lead from the Lord, catapulted her experience into a ministry for single parent families. In 1998, she graduated from Regent College in Vancouver, B.C. with a Masters in Theology.
In 2000, coming out of many years of in-the-trenches ministry, she authored The Hidden Mission Field: Caring for Single Parent Families in the 21st Century, which has become the standard handbook, nationally and internationally, for churches and para-church ministries interested in single parent families as a mission field. The same year, McKenna completed a comprehensive curriculum entitled One Parent Plus Kids for both single parents and their children.
