Hannah Montana 'Destroyed My Family'

So says Billy Ray Cyrus, father of Miley, adding that they've been under spiritual attack

In a rambling, revealing interview with GQ, Billy Ray Cyrus says that Hannah Montana, the Disney TV show that made his daughter Miley famous, "destroyed my family. . . . [T]he damn show destroyed my family." He adds, "I’d erase it all in a second if I could.” Cyrus and wife Tish are in the process of getting a divorce after 17 years of marriage.

The Cyrus family, including Miley, have been outspoken about their Christian faith in recent years, but Billy Ray says that recent incidents have shaken his -- and Miley's -- faith, and that his family has been under spiritual attack.

"Somewhere along this journey," Billy Ray told GQ, "both mine and Miley's faith has been shaken. That saddens me the most." GQ noted that the entire Cyrus family had been baptized together before moving from Franklin, Tenn., to Los Angeles. Billy Ray says the baptism "was Tish's idea. She said, 'We're going to be under attack, and we have to be strong in our faith and we're all going to be baptized...'" He says he has no doubt that the family has been spiritual attack: "I think we are right now. No doubt. There's no doubt about it."

Cyrus also says he wished he'd been tougher as a parent the last few years, as he watched Miley slowly move away from her goody-two-shoes image and make questionable -- even almost scandalous -- choices in recent years (a revealing photo shoot in Vogue, a quasi-pole dance on TV's Teen Choice Awards, drinking a beer in public, and, most recently, smoking a bong).

Billy Ray Cyrus told GQ, “How many interviews did I give and say, ‘You know what’s important between me and Miley is I try to be a friend to my kids’? I said it a lot. And sometimes I would even read other parents might say, ‘You don’t need to be a friend, you need to be a parent.’ Well, I’m the first guy to say to them right now: You were right. I should have been a better parent. I should have said, ‘Enough is enough — it’s getting dangerous and somebody’s going to get hurt.’ I should have, but I didn’t. Honestly, I didn’t know the ball was out of bounds until it was way up in the stands somewhere.”

My heart goes out to the family. I think fame is destructive. How many even CCM singers have broken families, working out of Nashville??? I wouldn't touch that like with a ten foot pole, but they might not realize that, except in hind site. Pray for the Cyrus family, that God might use their position for His purposes.

I praise God for Billy Ray Cyrus's honesty and humility in this interview. I pray God uses it to restore his family and be warning to other Believers who often seek fame as much as nonbelievers do. The Enemy hates families, all families. The family is a symbol of the Trinity, of the importance of Relationship is to our faith, the integral part relationship plays in all of life.

Pray for this family. Pray that they and the world can see God turn this situation around. Pray for Miley -- that she'd wake up and remember what is really important.

Please pray for this family. God can turn it all around and there doesn't have to be a divorce. Pray that they turn to God, repent and forgive each other. Divorce is not the answer!

So sorry to hear that! Maybe something can be done, still. It would have been good of they had a circle of friends/mentors to watch over them and to counsel.

Both Billy Ray and his "wife" (in spiritual reality a concubine) were "divorced" from their first spouses, contrary to Jesus' extremely clear commandment. Miley's parents weren't even really married in the eyes of God, although some hokey minister agreed to engage in the deception. Are we to believe that that spiritual disobedience had no effect on their children? When will Protestants start to actually obey God's Word on the subject of marriage?

When we make foolish choices and wrong decisions we can expect consequences and repercussions to follow.

Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus,
How authentic and serious are you about wanting to keep your family together and defeat this spiritual enemy attacking you? It is time to get out of the chaotic scene you find yourselves in, give up some of the fame and fortune, and go back to Franklin or Ashland and start again. Get regrounded in life and in the Word. This is Miley's chance to change directions and get back on track before she (and all of you) turn into just another headline, another sad story. You had plenty of wise counsel and advice and you chose to ignore it. Now you say they were right--you wish you had listened. Well, guess what? It is not too late to accept this wise advice. Drop out of the chaos, reclaim your faith and your life. Love each other as your promised and be the family God intended you to be.

Ah! The high and holy comments make me shake my head. Same old, same old story.

Pay the piper comes and bites you. Holy, holies go tsk tsk. Watch for Billy Ray on tour to your local Pentecostal/Evangelical/Fundamentalist Church.

Watch for the dedicated PR people ready to prEy for Billy Ray.

you have to wait until she smokes a bong to realize you're daughter is out of control. Most of us saw it 4 years ago when those scandalous photos of her in her underwear leaked onto the net, and when she was dating a 20 year underwear model while she was still a minor. Now that Hannah Montana is over, they need to talk about their 'family problems' publically for some more publicity.

Dear Rev Larry,
Your comments lack compassion for a family that is suffering. Please consider not just truth in your statements but love. Did you make those statements in love?
It breaks my heart to hear older brother-type Christians tsk-tsk-ing at younger brother-types. If you don't know what I'm talking about, go read Tim Keller's "Prodigal God".

Correction: my comment above was in response to Alicia, not Rev Larry

I like Hannah Montana Series and would never miss this show at all.
