Billy Graham comments on death of Rev. Falwell
Tim Morgan
The Billy Graham evangelistic association has issued this statement from evangelist Rev. Dr. Billy Graham concerning the death of Jerry Falwell:
"Jerry Falwell was a close personal friend for many years. We did not always agree on everything, but I knew him to be a man of God. His accomplishments went beyond most clergy of his generation. Some of my grandchildren have attended and currently attend Liberty University. He leaves a gigantic vacuum in the evangelical world. I am praying for his family, and especially the university that he headed."

Comments
I remember going to the National Religious Broadcasters convention in 1976. There I met Dr. Falwell, Dr. Bob Cook, and Dr. David Breese. I was struck by how they radiated God's love in their kind words and especially their humor and laughter. I remember all three today since all three are with the Lord!

This from the GRAHAM STATEMENT on the death of Jerry Falwell.
"We did not always agree on everything." I find it hard to beleive that this statement is from Billy. This is not the time to point to differences. This is a time for the sorrow of the loss of one who took the Bible literally and did not try to change the "truth" to meet current social ideas. The truth does not change.
I think the ones who have thought so much of Billy..need to know what Billy did not agree on. Could so many of us be wrong about Jerry Falwell? If so...we need to know just what was not agreeable. It might help us in our Christian walk.
I do not recall anything Falwell said or did that was not based on what the Bible teaches us. If I ...if we are wrong...we need to have that revealed to us. Billy has been the leading minister of our years. Such a comment seems to be out of place at this time of
grief for the loss of one who stood up and told that which he believed.
I find it very hard to even think that the Billy I have known and seen would put those words in a statment. Maybe later...but this is too soon after Falwell's death... Falwell's familly need not hear this at this time.
I would encourage all Christians to be very cautious about what they say when Billy's time comes to be called home.

Doug - honestly, Bill Graham's comment as harmless. You have blown it way out of proportion and calling attention to it has made it an eyesore. So they disagreed - good- sounds healthy to me. I am sure there are a lot of Christians famous and otherwise who disagreed with Dr. Falwell. There is no shame there. Let's talk about someting important and deserving our attention. Rev. Sara

Whoa, Doug. That's pretty much an over-reaction. This sort of thing is said among friends all the time. People say even in eulogies at a funeral "My friend so-and-so and I didn't agree on everything, but we sure enjoyed a long friendship." What Graham said is so normal, so natural, so ordinary, that I can hardly believe you found offense (unless perhaps you are already negative about Graham, and your antenna is on high alert for anything you can find to react to).

I think Dr. Grahams comments are honrable and proper. Doug is simply going of the deep end of exaguration. His comments are more inappropriate than Dr.Graham's, and he is redhairing in a wrong time with wrong person. He needs to go back and read his Bible that, great men do not have to always agree. Remember, Paul and Peter disagreed. Paul and Barnabas had sever disagreement so much they split. What is even ineteresting is that it is recorded in the Bible for our leanrning. Doesn't the Bible teach that we all walk according to the level of light we have reached, according to the measure of faith that is given unto us ? Doesn't the Bible teach the Holy Spirit gives difering gifts to different persons?
What is important is that America has been blessed to have had produced such a great leaders who stood for the cause of the Gospel and our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Now that Dr. Falwell has gone to his reward, I am sure the Lord has welcomed him saying " ...welcone though good and faithful servant. " It is true that we all feel the lose, when a giant of christian faith like Dr. Falwell passes on. In fact preciouse in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints. We should all be comforted by the words Dr. Falwell would have likly preached to us, I Thessaloninas 4:13-18. II Timothy 4:7-8" Finally, "If in this Life only we have hope in Chirsit,we are of all men most miserable."
Let, us comfort each other with comfort that only the Holy Spirit gives.
Sincerely
Paulos

As a Chinese woman and born-again Christian, here, I am greeting to all brothers/sisters in the Christ !
Let's say good bye to our very dear brother- Jerry Falwell. he is a very diligent good servant of the Lord-, a brave Christian soldier
To stand steadfast and fight back those anti-christ fake Gods but demons behind
To sow Gospel seeds in the lost souls, let them get saved by the Lord's Salvation on the Cross 2000 ago and gain Eternal Live instead Eternal destined death as a result of human-being sins
To hold God's Holy Moral standards to resist this world own decayed, corrupted immoral standards in this world which belongs to Satan - gays, abortions, adultery, fornication etc.

I think one of the greatest compliments you can give someone is to say, "We didn't always agree, but we always loved each other." That is how a family behaves. There is absolutely nothing negative about that comment at all.

Regardless of whatever people may feel concerning Graham's statement, Doug raises an interesting question-- namely, what specifically do Evangelical Christians disagree with in reagards to the life and ministry of Jerry Fallwell? Too many blogs, op/ed pieces characterize the man in broad terms and not within the scope of whether its the truth people disagree with or the approach.

I'm guessing people mostly disagree with the approach. I personally think the Moral Majority caused far more harm than good and created a lot of religious division in this country. Cal Thomas and Ed Dobson wrote a book about this in the 90's, and I would agree with their conclusions. Aligning of the Republican party with Christian principals is something that Evangelical Christians may never be able to live down. I, as a middle-aged woman, truly regret that he ever got into politics. Having said that, I would agree in general terms with his doctrine and do appreciate and admire the many programs he started to help people.

I think Allison put in well. People can agree with major theological issues but still disagree with methods or maybe minor points.

I think Allison is absolutely in error when she states "truly regret he ever got into politics". Had he not entered into this arena millions of Christians would of remained silent on such social issues as abortion, same sex marriages etc...In my opinion this country would be in a much sadder condition had Jerry not come along. If one child survived an abortionist hands because of the efforts of Jerry Falwell and the millions of Christians who joined the Moral Majority then I for one say "well done good and faithful servant".

I am willing to take a chance and gamble on the idea that Dr. Falwell was the concsience of America, right or left. He was the salt of the earth and the light. Some people have very low tolercnace for the amount of salt in thier menu, but that is okay. Some people have problem with a light when it is too bright that is okay too. But what we need to ralize is that we could not live with out them. One of the chracteristic of salt is a preservative and Dr. Falwell was just that for the cause of the Gospel without fear or shame of the power of the Gospel.
I beieive his effort and his stand has a lot to do with demise of communism and rebuilding of American might. Dr. Falwell is a man who was not afraid to be critized or persecuted, often. In that he lived His master's ideal life. We thank the Lord for giving him such edcuring grace without a reatreat. We thank his faimly for sharing him with the rest of the World. We thank his church for their commitment and exemplary blief in the leardeship of a man of God.
Sincerely
Paulos

I still believe the negative was more negative than the positive was positive. But, again, I think we were talking about opinion. You are certainly free to disagree with my opinion, Terry, but I don't think you can necessarily say it is wrong, since it is an opinion.
