What Is Gleanings?

At Christianity Today, we’re constantly tracking important developments in the church and the world. Often we use our network of reporters around the world (and for that, visit our main site). But we also monitor other news outlets, bloggers, newsmakers’ social media feeds, and countless other information streams. Gleanings compiles the most urgent and interesting items we’ve found, explains why you need to know about them, and gives you the background you need to understand them. It’s our snapshot of what God is doing in the world, hour by hour.

'It is the Kremlin, rather than heaven, that is smiling'

Second thoughts on a mended schism.

"It's nice to note--for a change--Christians coming together," CT's managing editor, Mark Galli, wrote about the reunion of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia. Writing in today's Wall Street Journal, Nadia Kizenko isn't so sure.

Ms. Kizenko fails to recognize that God will use any means to bring about his will. In this case, it is not surprising in the least that Mr. Putin seems to be pushing the unification, and that he is doing so probably for mostly political reasons. Just because the Kremlin is smiling, doesn't mean heaven isn't. It was that arch-pagan Cyrus, after all, who was the divine instrument of the Jews return from exile, and Cyrus no doubt did it for politically expedient reasons.
