Making Sunday Sexy

Several churches across the nation participated in National Porn Day yesterday

National [insert your own cause] awareness days are popping up all over the country, and the Church is no exception.
One Indianapolis-area church Sunday sermon sparked interest from local media. “You heard him correctly: It's Porn Sunday” headlined the Indianapolis Star’s article. The Crux Church joined hundreds of churches across the nation who observed National Porn Sunday yesterday, sponsored by Xxx.church.com, an online ministry aimed at Christians who are addicted to porn.

“I mean, how many times have you heard your pastor say ‘porn’ from the pulpit?” Crux's lead pastor, Daron Earlewin, tells the Star.

The Daily News in Florida reports that a 15-foot tall inflatable, blue elephant is mailed to participating churches across the country as mascot for National Porn Sunday.

"We are basically going to confront the big elephant in the pew," Robert Pooley, senior pastor of Coast Community Church told the newspaper.

But is the pulpit the place for the big blue elephant, or should it be addressed within individual counseling? What Bible verses do these preachers use?

These pastors desire to preach on issues that may have been overlooked in the past, but how do pastors make sure that they are not overlooking more traditional themes (pride, love, evangelism) that may not be as “sexy”?

“I think it may be one of the biggest problems that no one wants to talk about,” the Crux pastor says.

These pastors aim bring the issue out into the open, but could normalizing pornography make it an issue for those who had never found it to be a problem in the first place?

This is a rather strange objection. Are you suggesting we not talk about perhaps the most pervasive sin among Christian men because there may be some who don't have an issue with it? Perhaps I'm missing something, but according to this principle, wouldn't we have to avoid preaching about sin altogether?

I agree with the first comment that preaching on this issue is far from normalising it. We are bombarded with inappropriate images all of our lives in the West so it seems unlikely a preach (presumably) showing how pornography can negatively impact your life and is contrary to scripture will make people want to go and use.

Jesus was more than happy to say that lusting after someone was adultery and this is pretty clear cut lusting.

There's a difference between discussing something tactfully from a church pulpit and making a three-ring circus out of it, as so many churches love to do. The blue elephant is typical of the carnival atmosphere that so often pervades worship.

I would also add that since my elementary-school-age children like to listen to the sermon, I expect my pastor to approach such topics discreetly. How many six-year-old kids who ask their parents why the elephants were in church really need to be told about porn?

The whole idea sounds stupid to me. Let's get back to making church reverent.

Really? Sin should only be addressed through individual counseling. I thought the pulpit was a traditional place for addressing corporate sin. And porn is a corporate sin, even if it is traditionally "enjoyed" alone. Wasn't it Christianity Today that did some surveys that said that 20 percent of Christian women considered themselves "addicted" to porn. And I think that 50 percent of pastors admitted to viewing porn within the last 30 days. Where would you say that porn should be addressed? Because if we limit it to individual counseling sessions then our pastors are going to need to spend the majority of their time in counseling sessions and get nothing else done and yet not reach a significant portion of the people that would never step foot in a pastoral counseling session. Not to mention the fact that many pastors are not doing much counseling anymore.

Of course I agree with Patrick about the blue elephant. As an Anglican, it would be very important that the color be appropriate for the liturgical season.

What a thought provoking post. Part of the problem of the sex-saturated culture that we're living in is that pastors won't address these issues from the pulpit. We don't hear about this particular sin and its consequences. Or even worse, we never hear about what sex was intended to be. I would hope that pastors in this country would not start using a "sex sells" mentality when preparing their sermons, but it might not hurt to incorporate sexuality in some of their messages.

For those of you afraid for your kids to hear about this from the pulpit and having to explain the blue elephant, what do you do when you drive by an adult novelty store and the kids see it? (There is one of those in our town by a main road we have to drive by that we can't really avoid. In our last town there was a "gentlemen's"club by a main road).

There are so many church's that have fallen away from the true teachings of God,we have to pray for our church's and the pastors and pray that we the church will not be led astray, these are the day's that the bible speaks about, pray and read and study the word of God daily, trust in him not man .

Sex in general isn't talked about in sermons. Except, in my church here in Australia, the pastor occationally mentions pornography as a way of 'convicting' people of sin in their lives. It seems to be more of a condemning though. I have struggles with porn form the age of 13 and if I had heard about the dangers and addictiveness of it before that, maybe I wouldn't be in the mess I am now in... I am glad this organisation is doing something good for Christians

Being a mother of a 16yr son I find it very comforting to hear my Pastor talk about porn, staying a vergin, & homosexuality, being mindful to point out in the bible where it is written that our bodies are not our own. My 16yr son had struggled with porn since he was 14 thanks to Cinemax late night movies that I wasn't aware of, now I'm a proud advocate of Parental Control, on TV & PC. When he heard our Pastor speak he listened & started to realize that my husband & I were telling the truth. No more porn.

I saw these reprobates at a Wal-Mart in Massillon Ohio.
when confronted with the Word of God they crumbled,,
These Snakes have a SUV with “xxx church.com “and “no 1 internet Christian porn site” ,,painted all over it,,
the bible says abstain from the appearance of all evil….. So what do these evil men do?
They drag Jesus and the Holiness of Gods true church into the realm of smut.. They try and justify this
Wickedness by saying look at the web site “this is not what we are really about“,, ( so why make a lie up )
Or is their amusement trashing Jesus.. Its obvious the later…
These false Christians tell lies to people to trick them into looking at their web site,,,
scripture says all liars will have their place in the lake of fire and that the devil is the father of all lies..
I asked these workers of iniquity if they commit sin,, they answered Yes almost daily,,, the Word says
In ,1 john 3;8 he that commits sin is of the devil…. They have showed their true colors……
Proud as peacocks they bragged about committing sinning and claimed to be born again and saved.
Are they a sweet smelling savor in Gods nostrils? Driving around with XXX church and no 1 porn Christian website on their SUV ? Or rather a stench that smells and demeans the Holy sacrifice that Jesus suffered on the cross,, these wicked men attempt to make Jesus’ blood unholy..
I told these scoffers to repent of this iniquity ,,God hates all workers of iniquity Psalms 5;5
This is a example of the last days and proof of the hate reprobates have for God manifested in the flesh
Jesus is God …..they have attempted to turned the love and grace of God into a lie…
I saw many people who stood in sadness looking at the terrible words they painted on that SUV..
