Ex-President Roberts Separates Completely (Almost) from ORU

With a promised $70 million gift being dangled in front of them, ORU Regents plan to disentangle themselves from the Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association.

David Neff

On Monday this blog asked, "Will Richard Roberts Let Go or ORU?" Concerns had surfaced in both the Oklahoman newspaper and in the Chronicle of Higher Education that because Roberts had remained president and CEO of the Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association, he would still be able to misuse funds at Oral Roberts University.

I spent a few minutes studying the IRS Form 990s of both ORU and the Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association. The overlap between the boards of the two organizations is so huge that the evangelistic association was obliged to report that these organizations were under "Common Control."

Well, no longer. This morning the Associated Press, the Oklahoman, and the Tulsa World are reporting the promise of a major gift to ORU from Mart Green (founder of the retail chains Mardel and Hobby Lobby). He's offering $70 million to help the school out of its financial pit.

But there are conditions, and from the timing of the gift, it seems that one of them is for the school and the evangelistic association to cut their ties. According to the university's regents, they plan to disentangle the two organizations. Patriarch Oral Roberts has long opposed separating the two, according to the Oklahoman, but has apparently had a sudden change of heart.

The Green family made an initial $8 million gift on Monday, with the balance to be given over the next three months as the university shows progress in reforming its governance and its financial management and in dealing with pending lawsuits. To keep the reforms going, the Green family will likely get two seats on the ORU board of regents, says the Tulsa World.

Meanwhile, the regents' chairman has announced that Roberts will be allowed to remain in the ORU presidential palace--temporarily.

i am sad that the ministry and the school are seperating b/c it was founded to be a school inside of a minisrty, a safe harbor, and i am afraid that with the seperation that the safe feeling of the university and the atmosphere of the HolySpirit will be lost! I am trusting the Lord to see them through, after all the University was founded on Gods authority and the Holy spirit.

Long overdue! While I was there, it was easily seen how gray the lines were between the ministry and the school. Student activity fees, suddenly not available for student activities, etc. I think this will be a strong step for the university! They have always had, and continue to have, a great faculty and the students are second to none!

To the parent comment: I graduated from ORU in 2003 and whole heartedly disagree. What I loved about the school was the students and faculty. The "ministry" was a big drain on the school and did not make me feel anything disappointed. The Holy spirit was there because God's children were there not because ORM was over the administration.

Good bye Richard and Lindsay! You will not be missed.

As an alumni of the university, I am ecstatic at the news that the ministry and university are separating. It would seem that Mart Green is a God-send, a catalyst to bring much-needed reform to the leadership and financial accountability of the University!!!

Perhaps someone could explain exactly what the probem is at ORU. I have not heard of any criminal charges of embezzlement etc. that are being brought against Richard Roberts. If he "misused" or stole funds from the University there should be criminal charges. I would truly like to know what criminal misconduct Roberts is charged with, as he is accused of being a "Jim Bakker" by the faculty, which just does not appear to be the case. I know a few professors were fired and got angry then filed a lawsuit. All I hear is that the president was living a "lavish lifestyle." When you compare the amount of money secular university presidents get along with all the perks, allowances, and benefits, etc. the former ORU president's lifestyle was simply not "lavish." Perhaps the faculty considered it "lavish" compared to the amount of money they were making.

It is past time for ties to be cut if ORU wishes to continue to attract both studewnbts and financial support. The Holy Spirit does not leave a Spirit-filled campus simply because ties to a specific ministry are cut. In this time of increased scrutiny of many ministries by Congress ane the media, it is time for serious introspection and scrutinty and conscience searching, asking rhe question "Is Christ glorified in this organization?" Or in fact, is the cause of Christ suffering because of this group.

Someone said once "you can't serve two masters" Judas proved the wisdom of it..worshipping success (in America that often smells like money) versus humbly walking with God. But then I could be 'left behind' Whatever makes money is quickly sanctified.

The lastest news I've heard is that the lawyer who filed the suit against Richard Roberts and ORU is hoping for a "settlement." This does not sound like a criminal extortion case, but one that has financial gain as it's main goal.

While I realize that financial accountability is necessary, I still wonder why the Body of Christ is so quick to judge the actions of their own men and women and believe the very worst of them before all of the facts are proven - what happened to innocent until proven guilty. And if guilty, and a man is caught in a fault the Scriptures tell us that those who are spiritual are supposed to restore such a one in a spirit of meekness and cautions them to be careful not to judge lest they fall into the same sins of those who have missed the mark. I feel for the Roberts family and believe we should pray for them fervently and in sincere love.

It is clear that the university by its own admission is in great debt (over $50 million!). From the 2005 IRS Form 990 for the 2004 tax year, the income of Richard and Lindsay Roberts was ast least $669,200 from both the university and OREA. This does not include housing, and other benefits such as retirement and insurance. If that were figured in their income approaches the $1 million dollar range. That is more than plenty for two people who are supposedly servants of Christ! It is Richard that wants the settlement to avoid all the other disclosures required by a trial. On Larry King's show they admitted using university funds for personal pleasure or spending, this is called either embezzelment or just plain theft. Don't blame the devil for what is happening. God is cleansing his Church!

A good many years ago, I read a book about Richard's immoral attitude and demonic behavior written by his lovely ex-wife, a woman of great courage and true Christian virtue. She was, of course, villified for setting the record straight about him. I have seen so much corruption exposed in the apostate "church" for over sixty years that I have been wondering when the wicked Roberts clan would go down for theirs. Now a true miracle of deliverance has happened, and perhaps the university will be "free at last" from the grasping influence of Richard, the pagan hearted. Many an agonized prayer of the truly righteous is finding an answer in what is happening in Tulsa tonight. There is finally reason to hope that the widow's mite will eventually be spent for the glory of Christ rather than for the abominable King Richard's greedy pleasure.

I don't understand. If the University exists as a Evangelical Christian entity, how can it be separated from its founder association. If the President is corrupt, why isn't he fired. What am I missing. The University was founded as a specific Christian univeristy and should remain as such and not turned into another secular university which the secularists would just love. Haven't we handed over enough colleges to them. Clean up the corruptness, why can't that be done and have the college remain a Christian college. I mean, anybody can be fired so what's the problem. What am I missing.

"Cleansing Begins with the House of the LORD".... I ask... Is your Finicial House In Order ? ? ? If you are a Parent, have you ever had a talk with your children about money?? Probably Not... Just what kind of Heritage do you want to pass dwon to your children and grand-children ? ? ? Our great and glorious Public Education K-12 does little to nothing to prepare the potential "suckers" for the Real World... I think any corp. that gives credit to us likes it that way... The American Way ????

Is it any wonder that this all should follow, considering the sins, foundational fraud, manipulative fake "healings" and 900 foot Jesus of the organizations founder? The apple did not fall far from the tree.

I think it is High Time that men of God STAND UP and speak the truth in love in response to what the Bible says about proper Christian conduct and how a Man of God should be an example to the Church and the unbeliever.First of all I believe the Bible teaches that Jesus Christ is the Son of God,That Jesus was born of a Virgin,That Jesus died on the cross of Calvary to provide redemption from sin,and that Jesus rose on the 3rd. day.And I also believe that Jesus Christ is THE ONLY WAY in which a man can find Salvation and eternal life and apart from faith in Jesus Christ men will be judged by God who is Holy to an eternity in Hell for their wickedness and sin.I also believe what the Lord said in
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Only those who are Born Again will be saved form God's wrath and eternal torment in hell.

Secondly the Bible clearly states that we are to consider all things by the Word of God so that we know how the Man of God should conduct himself.And the word of God says in 2 Timothy 2:15: Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

And the word of truth is what we are to use to conduct our lifes.And if one studies God word they will find In 2nd Timothy 3:16-17:
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Gods word is profitable for many wonderful things and here in particular 4 Things. 1-For doctrine 2-For reproof 3-For correction 4-For instruction in righteousness

And these 4 Things are provided by God to us for a reason because without sound doctrine,without reproof,without correction and without instruction in rightousness
Then v:17 would not be correct which says:
17: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

So when some suggest that someone is judging by agreeing with what Senator Grassley is bringing out in the open about these Pastors lifestyles.It has been reported in the US press that some of these 6 ministries Pastors under public scrunity that they fly in Cessana Jets,drive Rolls Royces and Bentley Convertables,live in Mansions worth from 2 Million Dollars up to 10 Million Dollars,stay in Presidentalial Suites for a sum of one Thousand Dollars up to Ten Thousand Dollars a night.One of these 6 Pastors when asked on CNN IF THEY BELIEVED JESUS WOULD AGREE TO THEM HAVING A ROLLS ROYCE? HE SAID "YES Jesus would agree"

So when we look at what is taking place with Senator Grassley,s requested inquiry on ministries such as Benny Hinn,Keneth Copeland,Crefflo Dollar Joyce Myers and others and in light of the scandal at Oral Roberts University where as even the President Richard Roberts resigned on Friday after his accountant informed the world that he was instructed to "cook the books" by Richard Roberts himself and the accountant was Fired.

And when you take into account that these 6 ministries teach false teachings that I Quote.."We are all little gods" and that we have the power to create through our words,and the Properity Gospel.Perhaps one is being judgemental if you think that Doctrine Reproof,Correction and Instruction in Rightousness is not an appropiate measure to be guided by not only in these 6 Pastors ministries but in any Christian ministries.And let me ask have you really dug into what The Word of Faith Movement teaches?I suggest that any one reading this finds out and become aware of what these ministries teach.The choice is yours.

It's about time that MEN OF GOD STAND UP and speak the word of truth in love and through Gods Word find Doctrine and Reproof false teachers and bring Correction so that people are not mislead and bring Instruction in righteousness so that people wiil be aware of what is happening.

I am an ordained Pentecostal minister in Regent Park -St. Jamestown Toronto.And I have a duty as a watchman of the church God has called me to lead.Here are some scriptures to that warn us of the very things we are talking about.

2nd.Peter 2:1-3 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
2: And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
3: And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

1 Timothy 4:1: Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

1rst Timothy 6:3-11 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
4: He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
5: Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
6: But godliness with contentment is great gain.
7: For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
8: And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
9: But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
10: For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
11: But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

1rst Peter 5:2: Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
3: Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.

If anyone would like to discuss what My views are on any of the above statements or on the bible in general,please feel free to respond to this email... Pastor Mike Grady info@mgrady.net

As a graduate from ORU in the early 70's I am pleased
that finally Richard Roberts will hopefully not be tied to
ORU. I miss the days of Oral and Evelyn...
