What Is Gleanings?

At Christianity Today, we’re constantly tracking important developments in the church and the world. Often we use our network of reporters around the world (and for that, visit our main site). But we also monitor other news outlets, bloggers, newsmakers’ social media feeds, and countless other information streams. Gleanings compiles the most urgent and interesting items we’ve found, explains why you need to know about them, and gives you the background you need to understand them. It’s our snapshot of what God is doing in the world, hour by hour.

Huckabee First to Hit the Stage

Former pastor employs biblical illustrations.

Former Southern Baptist pastor Mike Huckabee took the stage first this evening declaring Republican rival Mitt Romney dead.

He alluded to the David-Goliath story and took one shot (seemingly) at Vietnam veteran John McCain: "one small, smooth stone is even more effective that a whole lot of armor."

Then he used the words of Jesus to dig on the mega-rich Romney: "the widow's mite has more effectiveness than all the gold in the world."

Comments

I don't get it. What's Huckabee trying to do? His seeming "put-downs" of fellow Republican candidates by using scripture is extremely unbecoming for a Christian leader. Although Huckabee is not my choice for the Republican nomination, I have at times been impressed with his self-effacing comments and humor. However, in my opinion, he has taken things too far with his comments reported here.

I agree that Huckabee made a mistake in using scripture to disrespect his fellow republicans. However, I think he spoke in the heat of the moment without thinking how bad it would sound.

This is something Huckabee will need to work on if he should get the nod to be president or vice-president.

Other examples are his comment about Mormons believing Satan and Jesus are brothers. I've never heard that, but regardless, it wasn't appropriate for him to say in that public setting.

Another example was in South Carolina when he spoke about the flag and about knowing the place they could put the pole. I think he blew it on that one too.

However, Huckabee is still my choice for president. Since I'm a preacher myself, I can forgive him for a few slips of the tongue. Unfortunately, we preachers don't always speak for God. We do have slips of the tongue occasionally that probably make God say, "What is he doing there?" or "Where did that come from?"
