What Is Gleanings?

At Christianity Today, we’re constantly tracking important developments in the church and the world. Often we use our network of reporters around the world (and for that, visit our main site). But we also monitor other news outlets, bloggers, newsmakers’ social media feeds, and countless other information streams. Gleanings compiles the most urgent and interesting items we’ve found, explains why you need to know about them, and gives you the background you need to understand them. It’s our snapshot of what God is doing in the world, hour by hour.

Those Missing Evangelical Democrats

Do I repeat myself? Very well then I repeat myself.

If any exit poll anywhere asked Democrats if they identify themselves as evangelical/born-again, I'm not seeing it. I'm sure Howard Dean, Leah Daughtry, Jim Wallis, Katie Barge, and others aren't happy. But journalists (who call the shots on what questions get asked) shouldn't be pleased, either. There's a lot of talk tonight about how evangelicals are shaping the Republican ticket. There ought to have been some discussion about how they're shaping the Democratic ticket, too. After all, a third of evangelicals vote Democratic.

Thanks for the shout out Ted. You are right. I am not happy. Not as a voter, and not as a Christian. Onward in this fight.

The reason they don't ask the question of Democrats is that evangelical Democrats don't have a significant impact on Democratic party policies and positions. Name _any_ Democratic Party position that they have influenced from the standard position, let alone been the base for. Until you show that you can influence elections, which they have not unlike other minorities in the Democratic party, you are a nonentity.
