More Left Behind Movies?

Settlement ends legal dispute; more end-times flicks could be on the way

Mark Moring

A nine-year legal dispute between the producers of the Left Behind movies and Tim LaHaye, who co-authored the books, came to an end last week when a settlement was reached between both parties.

Cloud Ten Pictures announced that the agreement ends a dispute that began in 2000.

According to The Christian Post, LaHaye had filed a lawsuit against Cloud Ten, claiming that the producers made a lower quality film than the contract demanded. Still, the first Left Behind film sold almost 3 million copies before its theatrical release in 2001, and earned $2.1 million on opening weekend. LaHaye was also reportedly dissatisfied with Cloud Ten's distribution strategies for the three Left Behind movies made so far.

The settlement gives LaHaye the right to remake the first three films based on his books, but if he doesn't exercise his option to remake the films, Cloud Ten will retain its current rights to make sequels.

"We are thrilled to finally have this behind us," said Andre van Heerden, CEO of Cloud Ten. "While we received repeated judgments from the courts that validated our rights, we were unable until now to finally put this lawsuit behind us."

LaHaye and co-author Jerry Jenkins told the Los Angeles Times in 2006 that they had naively sold the movie rights too early, ending up with what Jenkins called "church basement movies," with Kirk Cameron in the lead role. (Cameron, coincidentally, is starring in Fireproof, another Christian film coming in September from the makers of Facing the Giants.)

While the three films--Left Behind (2000), Tribulation Force (2002) and World at War (2005)--have enjoyed big sales and popularity in the Christian market, most critics would agree with Jenkins' assessment, usually giving the films low marks.

Cloud Ten producer Peter Lalonde told CT Movies in 2005 that he expected mainstream critics "to hammer us just because of the [Christian] message. . . . Of course, Hollywood sends messages every day, but they have always had this mindset toward Christian films, and frankly I think they still do."

The Left Behind series of books have sold a whopping 65 million copies. The 16th and final book released in April, 2007.

The Left Behind movies may not have been great, but Cameron's newest movie, Fireproof, is WONDERFUL. (I saw a screening of it). It's one of the more powerful movies I've seen.

Go check it out Sept. 26.

"church basement movies," appropriate for a bottom-feeding eschatology that transforms Christians into unpaid cheerleaders for the other team.

The trouble with Tim Lahaye's genre of movies and books is that they are specifically focused on one particular interpretation of pre-millennial prophetic interpretation, promoting it against all others. For thousands of years, including the early history of the Church, as reflected in the writings of Ireneaus in his works against heresies, the early Church held the Classic pre-millennial view. LaHaye's views are fairly recent newcomers on the Christian scene, being a bit over 100 years old. It would seem we should pay more attention to Irenaeus's views, as he was a disciple of Polycarp, who was a disciple of the apostle John. Ireneaus's views were definitely very apostolic and in line with the original views of the Jerusalem Church founded by Jesus Christ himself. Why are these things never brought out, which "Christian Hollywood" tries to paint a different picture than was given to us in the beginning? UNITYINCHRIST.COM does have a section on pre-millennial prophecy which is more in line with Ireneaus's recorded interpretation of pre-millennial prophecy. Check it out to see the "other side" of the interpretive debate.

I don't know about the movie, but the first book was horrifying, and not in a scary thriller book way, but in it's racist-like assumptions. "The glorious, supernatural, born again race" (as I remember Kenneth Copeland glorifying one day while channel surfing), the Jesus race, the race of lightness, is snatched into a very exclusive, pearly gated community of many mansions, no doubt antebellum style, because God likes them best.

Meanwhile, the inferior supernatural race, the race behind every conspiracy theory, the race of darkness, the race made of unredeemed dust and mud, the race inherently unable to be good people, goes through the escalating bloody hells it so deserves for the sin of being born human, and/or of people keeping the the integrity of their religions and philosophies, or just being Gay. It's the worst of Christian Reconstructionism grafted onto the worst of premillennial eschatology, with endless glorification of macho consumerism and dubiously moral fantasies as a means to out maneuver the evil conspiracy.

Even worse, the writing was kind of clunky, though considering how it sold, obviously adequate for it's audience. But if I'm going to read dubiously moral novels, at the least they should attempt to have some art and style to them beyond the merely adequate.

Left Behind was shameless bigotry conceived by a man who had to leave his co-chairmanship of Jack Kemp's presidential campaign because of his shameless history of rank bigotry and dubious conspiracy theory mongering.

USE ALL THE "BIG" WORDS YOU WOULD LIKE PETE THESE BOOKS PUT REV. AND OTHER BOOKS IN THE BIBLE INTO TERMS ALOT OF PEOPLE CAN UNDERSTAND YOU KNOW CAUSE THATS "ADEQUATE" FOR THIS AUDIENCE, FURTHERMORE IF YOU DO NOT BELIEVE IN CHRIST OR HIS BIBLE MAYBE YOU SHOULD READ SOMETHING OTHER THAN THE TRUTH. I'M THINKING HMM MAYBE YOU JUST DON'T LIKE THE AUTHORS.

Posted by: JULIE at September 9, 2008

Amen to Julie!!! I agree, you can use all the big words you want, but these books, and movies, have put the rapture, and what comes after into reality for a lot of people who do not know Christ, or have fallen away from Christ like I had. That is also why I dont know why the squabble over how the movies were made. Has both parties lost the whole concept over why this movie, and book were made in the first place, and that is to save souls. Lets iron this out fellas, and lets make more of these movies so the public will know the truth!!!!!

Posted by: Mark at October 10, 2008

Indeed. However, may I suggest that it is known that the only genuine American Theology and doctrine is that of Pre-Millennial Dispensationalism as first posed by Darby and his translation (which by the way he received gladly and without hesitation by a "prophetess" in 1880 and never even bothered to search the Scriptures himself to see if what she prophesied was true), and later supported by Schofield. Also, the rapture teaching is based only on one verse in 1 Thes 4:16 which is taken out context not only from the immediate passage, but the Scriptures as a whole. If one wants to truly understand this passage, one has to consider the historical context in which the passage lies, and what Apostle Paul is truly stating. I am forced to disagree with you all due to the Scriptural evidence. The Left Behind Series spoon feeds the reader the theological hermeneutic of the authors along with bad theology.

For all those out there who are posting anti-christian rhetoric I would just like to add this. Darwin himself said these words exactly; "IF it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my hteory would absolutely break down." I know that not all non-christians beleive in evolution. As for those who do, I am not proving that my faith is all powerful by quoting the bible, I am simply pointing out your founding father's quote of common sense. Many will discredit this as they follow their faith... I mean evolution blindly.

Posted by: Matt at November 17, 2008

Although I enjoy reading the Left Behind series I disagree with some of their theology. John 17:15 clearly states that Jesus wasn't going to take even the true christians out of the world before the tribulation, but PROTECT us from the evil one. Look for yourself if you don't believe me.

For those who believe that the Rapture is untrue check out this website. It shows that the early church believed in the rapture. http://www.pawcreek.org/articles/endtimes/EarlyTeachingOnPreTrib.htm and http://www.grantjeffrey.com/article/why_some_reject.htm. The word rapture is english for the word means to be caught up in Greek (rapturo) please check this information out.

I don't know why Jerry Jenkins referred to the movies as 'church basement movies'. I thought they were actually pretty good (except the first one). If anything, Jenkin's novels are 'church basement' quality - they're so bad I couldn't get even halfway through.

My only criticism of 'Left Behind' is they make a cartoon out of the Rapture which is essentially the most serious event of mankind. This whole Tribulation Force is nothing more than a Christian marketing gimmick that turned out successful in the world's eyes.

We need more realistic story-telling.

I enjoyed the first 3 left behind movies and look forward to the next.

Posted by: Mike at November 24, 2008

I very much liked the books and the movies.

I also believe the rapture is coming before the tribulation.

Luke 22:36 says Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.
Rev. 3:10 says Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell upon the earth.

The bible also describes to very diffent days, one He will come like a thief in the night and the dead in Christ shall rise and then all other believers and at an hour you do not expect.

and the other day everyone who is left here will see Him coming down through the clouds and He will set His feet down and it also has the amount of days from the antichrist to the end of the tribulation, so you can figure out an exact day, where the other day says an hour you do not expect and Matthew 13 says the unbelievers are taken first, which is at the end of the tribulation.

Although i do agree that the acting was very bad in most of these movies, i do agree with the main idea of them. Perhaps if they where better made, like Mr. Lahay should do, the word will make a much better impact. People will only concentrate on the bad acting and not the message. Good job Mr.Lahay! Hope you can get someone to do better. This world is going to he** in a handbasket quickly, and we need more movies like these to spread the word without giving the critics more ammunition. If you are not a beliver in Revelations, one needs to just look around with a open mind. Not saying the world is comming to a end, only God knows that information, but i am saying that God is slipping further and further from our country and the meaning of "In God We Trust" that is the motto of this great nation is no longer being practiced.

I really love the movies and am very excited about the possibility of seeing another one.

Lets face it how many young people actually take time to read today? A very small portion. These movies are great for sparking conversation, witnessing, and just teach a need for Jesus.

I would like to thank everyone who has played a role in these movies directors, crew, and cast. These are great movies.

I really enjoyed reading the series. I couldn't put the books down and waited excitedly until each one came out. The only one I did not get through was the final book "The Glorius Appearing". I have watched all three movies and thoroughly enjoyed them. I am anxiously awaiting for the next movie to come out!

I'm sorry Mr Lahay thinks the Left Behind movies were basement made. I for one thought they were very well done, but then I make videos of my grandchildren playing out skits in my garage. I do pray that we will get further Left Behind movies. However, I see Mr. Lahay has the right to remake the first three before anymore can be made. What a shame.

If some of these people just know what the endtimes really mean, it is so sad that people would critized a well produced film. I've been reading all the books and to my knowledge the movie is quiet a realistic version of the books. The only complaint that I have is that there is a big sprong from movie 2 to 3. But keep up the Good Word of our Lord Jesus who is on His way to come and take His children away.

i think the first three movies should be remadee in pairs..book 1 and 2 then mix the 3 and 4.. then go about making full scale movies on the rest threr is just too much going on to try to combinr anything past the indwelling..i have the first three and cant wait too but the next whatever order they have to come out

I loved the left behind movies, I have watched them over and over again and no matter what anyone thinks about the acting or which one will come first the rapture or the tribulation, it doesn't matter because in the end the world will be over and you can either be on board or not but I felt these movies brought that to life...i loved them so much, I cried and laughed and hope and pray not just for the next one but for the whole series to be done...these movies are an eye openner and really makes you think about your life and where you stand in your faith...I can't believe that there is a legal battle over this and I have to ask both parites...is that very Christain? I mean if you are getting the word of God out there no matter in what form isn't that all that matters...I think it's all about the money...

I really enjoy the LEFT BEHIND SERIES. I liked the books and the movies both. Nobody knows for sure until it happens exactly specifically how it will play out. But we know it will and these help and comfort me and even show me how it might be for us if we are left behind. They are wonderful. And the dispute was ungodly for a Christian to take another Christian to court. Even sine non-christians even knew that.

Posted by: Carol B at December 26, 2008

I really liked the movies and the books. I thought that they were awesome. I think that they were a great tool to get the word out. I just pray that the dispute is over and done and they will continue to make new ones and not remake the old ones because we dont have that long to wait...so can we please move forward and focus on the souls and not the past to see if more money can be made off the movie, and I think that the dispute is crazy because unless it is over "there werent enough souls saved" then why focused on the quality. Please lets focus on the souls. Please

I personally enjoyed the books. I found that once I picked them up I could not put them down. I agree that there are some areas that are up for debate as far as theological POVs but that should come in second to the fact that there are "non-Christians" reading these books and asking questions. I think that if one unsaved soul is touched then all is worth it! That is what we were commisioned to do... remember? Touch lives and evangelize the truth of Jesus Christ. They did that for me and for several lost souls in my family.

Interesting that all the "I loved the books and movies" comments on this thread look suspiciously alike... almost as if they were written by a bunch of people with the exact same writing style, from the same terminology right down to the same grasp of the concept of sentence structure (or lack thereof)...

Curious how so many of the readers of the LB series write exactly the same way. I guess they really do think alike. Birds of a feather, and all that.

I don't know if people are still reading these comments, but I felt a need to say that I agree with Jenkins' assessment of the movies, though someone might remind him Jesus condemns hypocrisy. Also, to my fellow Christians out there, I want to recommend an essay called "Good Work and Good Works." It is a really excellent read, about how quality matters. It can be found, interestingly, in a book called The World's Last Night, by C.S. Lewis.

I have read all of the Left Behind books and I have just finished watching the three Left Behind movies for about the 5th time. I have also read all the comments here. And I think some of the unchristlike arguements set forth by the lawsuits and by some of these postings put Christ and His message to an open shame. Regardless of your opinions on when the rapture will take place, or if there will be a rapture, the point is that we are all lost without Jesus Christ. When He comes back, regardless if it's Pre, Mid, or Post Trib, hearts and souls need to be prepared for His coming. That should be the main focus. The messages of these books and movies have reached lost souls and whether you think they are "basement made," or play to a particular belief or theology should be the least of our concern as Christians. Our ONLY concern as Christians should be winning more souls for Christ...PERIOD.

Anything to spread the word of our lord is alright in my book.People should put aside there differences and just let Gods true light shine among the darkness of this world. We are all sinners but we all believe in the same god. I am so glad that I read this report. My family will no longer read LaHaye books. What kind of hypritical message is LaHaye trying to send? My dd was working on her collection to completing this series. Unfortunatly, I will not allow false teachers in my home. The books will be burned. We will not even borrow from the library.

Cloud Ten is a struggling Christian based production company. What greedy "Christian" would try to take from that? LaHaye has more than enough profit w/ books. I am ashamed to have ppl like him in our walk next to Jesus. Shame on him.

Posted by: Mother of 5 at January 25, 2009

I hope that this website has let their readers know that the Left Behind books are heretical and are not Christian in the least. The Left Behind books preach a premillenial dispensationalist message: a deceptive, twisted version of Christianity that emphasizes selfishness and hypocrisy. Remember that "the Devil, too, can cite scripture for his purpose."

I would like to request that all of the people writing pro-Left Behind comments actually read the New Testament again and remember that some of the authors were referring to events that were happening at the time. The authors of the New Testament were quite capable of using metaphor. This becomes a problem when you try to insist on a "strictly literal" reading, so please keep that in mind.

Posted by: Reader at January 30, 2009

To those who are bashing the author and validity of the origin these book are Bible Based and you had better get yourself a set because you'll need them when Your Left Behind.
I have watched them repeatedly and continue too especially the first one, they are all Three GREAT. and it's the best reminder of the Day When JESUS will call us home.

Posted by: VLPatterson at February 2, 2009

If you take any stance except the literal with the Bible, you can make the Bible say anything, in essence, making it say nothing. BTW the pre-trib rapture eschatology has been around at least since the time of Ephraim the Syrian in 373 AD. Then too the Latin Vulgate which uses the word raptus (rapture) was the Christian Bible for about 500 years, so it would seem that NOT believing in the Rapture of the church is the NEW IDEA, not the other way round. Still, in the final analysis; what counts is: if only ONE SOUL has been saved from Hell's fire and Damnation ... because of these Books/Movies ... well, that is enough reason for the series to exist.

PS I do agree however, that Christians should not sue other Christians. It is a very bad witness to the unsaved world. As the old song goes: "And they will know we are Christians by our LOVE." (not our lawsuits).

Posted by: Patricia Anders at February 9, 2009

Yes, it is sad, that christians take fellow christians to the court. But in this case in this case, the film company and the author obviously didn´t agree on which quality of film the contract stated. Since they couldn´t solve the matter in a private dialogue, they had to settle it with help from a third party.

But I think it is to thin just stating, that premillenial dispensationalism is false teaching without showing som proof. Truly the bible does not state clearly nor when the rapture will come, neither in which form (supernatural dissappearing, extraordinary amounts of sudden death or slow development in death during longer time span). But because bible is not clear i find it impossible to prove wether one or another interpretation is the truth. The only interpretation i have trouble to see in accordance with the bible is amillennialism. And I find it troublesome to accept Martin Luthers edition postmillenial view, because we have then been living in the "short" period after the millenium for nearly 500 years. Personally I find it simplest to accept that we are living in a premillenial time with no certain chronology of the end time. If I am wrong please enlighten me with the word of God.

And frankly, most of us are not able to say anything for certain, because we do not understand the original language of the bible, and therefore we are left over with more or less accurate translations of the bible. I do acknowledge those people translating the bible - my knowledge of the ancient languages telles me that it is quite a task to navigate through possiple translations at the same time being accurate and true to the belief, at the same time avoiding to interprete according to ones confession or lack of so. Already at this point it is clear that you cannot just state a teaching to be unbiblical or false without thorough study.

Regarding "church basement movies" it depends on what you compare to. The left-behind phrase derives (I guess) from a song text in the classic 70´ies movie `Like a thief in the night´ which is undoubted a "church basement movie" though the plot is simple and clear. The image quality of the left-behind series is far better than the master epic `Ten commandsments´, while the latter probably has a higher state-of-the art. At the end I as viewer will probably not notice the great difference. And frankly I prefer the money is used to tell a good story, not wasted for unnecessary extravagance.

Well the main problem is cloud ten picture and there poor production of any movies they make.Second problem is TBN is behind them. Now anyone with any ounce of bibical knowledge can see the false teaching from TBN about 90 % of the time.
But we live in a time when the church does not read the bible anymore !

Again these 3 movies were aweful to watch and the first movie never even mention Jesus by name. The quality of all these movies was of a B rated movie .With the books having sold so well, it's a ashame these movies failed to be as good quality as the the books.

We all the cash TBN steals from foolish christians (The name it and claim it scam works well for TBN ) you would think they could spend the money on creating a real hollywood type production.

In response to Daniel....If the 1st movie was so bad to watch, why would you watch the 2nd and 3rd anyway, unless you are simply a film critic, and not a Christian?

Posted by: Bill at March 29, 2009

TBN is a great organization that does ALOT of great things for the church as a whole. They didn't make the best movie they could have but it wasnt HORRIBLE. The authors should have sold it to someone else if they didnt want a christian basement film. Faith based giving is actually talked about thoroughly in the bible and there is nothing wrong with "name it and claim it". With so much GARBAGE on television it is a huge relief to have ANY christian based channel. If you have such a problem with it then i would encourage you to start your own christian channel that does not accept any tithes or offerings at all. that way you can be more holy than TBN. Ridiculous. you should all stop being keyboard warriors and get out in the community and do something yourselves instead of monday night quarterbacking what everyone else is trying to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Left Behind movies hav helped me to realize that i need God in my life, for one day revelations shall come to pass and I want to be on the side that offers eternal life, I want my children and their children to be on that side also to be on that side. I will always believe that their is a God and that his Son Jesus died on the cross so that we may live. this whole dispute thing between the authors of the book and Cloud Ten is unbelievable. How could chriatians who love God and live to serve Him argue behind something so childish. the point of the movie is to show people the right way and what is to come and to help them choose Gods side right. Well it was done I am now a believer because of this movie. so why argue. thats not God like.

I will not pass judgement on the legal dispute, because it is not for me to do. I am, however, glad that it has been settled.

I am somewhat curious to know - to the people so fervently defending the theology that Left Behind espouses (some even going so far as to suggest that if you don't agree with it, YOU will be "left behind"), where exactly does this certainty come from? Pastors? Books? Personal study? I've experienced all three and I'VE certainly never been convinced...

I feel so honored to have read these books! These are the best fiction based Christian books I have ever read. I have purchased and read all of them. Could not wait until the next one hit the shelf. The movie strenghtened my faith in my Lord and Saviour and gives a beautiful account of what the authors feel that Revelation is trying to tell us about the Rapture, Tribulation, and the Milenium and after that Christ reign on earth. I introduced my sister to these books and her son that had a problem with reading in his 40's now through the power of the Holy Spirit was saved! I would like to thank you for all your hard works and I know our Father will give you your rewards that you both truly deserve. As far as the movies, I do hope that you will persue your dream to make the movies a reality. I enjoyed the books more but, if you do the movies oh my, I can't wait. I know that my church will come to all of them too! God bless anyone who had a part of these books being published! I will continue to pray for the authors!

I looked forward to the movies and was seriously disappointed in the 1st 2 and found that the 3rd was getting at least better. I think it pittiful that the only thing undersub can add is the need for Christians to learn the difference in "there", "their" and "they're". Surely, he/she realizes that poor grammar has nothing to do with one's faith.

Layhaye should be ashamed of himself. The left behind movies weren't amazing but they had a great message and they inspire me every time i watch them. They were a good christian message. Now that he has taken the rights and DONE NOTHING with the movies. he has lost the interest of millions of non-christians. Saving souls is definately not the priority of these authors. I am ashamed of them. But i still pray for them every night to fix this dispute.

I am just wondering, since it has been over a year since cloud ten told us of this settlement, is Tim LaHaye going to take this opportunity to make the movies? I have yet to see anywhere where he has stated or commented as to whether or not he is going to do them. They said that if he doesn't then Cloud Ten has the right to resume making the films (which by the way are amazing and have led MANY of my family members to at least consider living for God). So my question is how long does he have to "act on this decision" before Cloud Ten can resume making the films? The books were AWSOME but some people don't read books like they used to and the movies are a great witnessing tool! God Bless All!

I understand why Tim LaHaye wanted more depth, more reality to the movies. They were somewhat shallow compared to the books, but I still thought they sent a wonderful message to the viewers. Kirk Cameron was excellent in the part he played. I read all of the books in the Left Behind serious. Although, fiction the books coincided with the scriptures, and planted a picture in mind readers of how the end times could be. I disagree with the person that thinks LaHaye's views are fairly new. My grandmother is 104 years old, in her right mind, attends church every Sunday and have had the these views since she was a young girl. Ireneaus might have had his interpertation of how things will be, everyone does. However, I for one will stick with the scriptures. If you give your life to Christ and read the word of God (and cross references) with an understanding the mysteries of the end times will be reviled to you. He is coming like a thief in the night. The dead in Christ will rise first and we which are left that believe in him will be caught up to meet him in the air. It's that simple. We need more movies that will touch the heart and lives of us all (Christian and sinners alike). Please LaHaye remember it's all about winning souls for the Lord. It's time to put your disagreement behimd and began production anew. We're more than ready for movie #4.
