New York City evangelicals call for prayer for finance industry after 500-point Dow meltdown.
This evening, an influential evangelical leader in New York City issued by email to me a personal call for Christians to pray for the crisis hitting the investment community. Allow me to share his (edited) email as follows:
It is crucial to take forceful leadership in praying for our business leaders, Christians in the financial industry and those whose investments and mortgages are tanking. We may find it hard to pray for these bankers because they are insanely wealthy, true.A few of them can be terribly arrogant; and some can have little heart for the less wealthy. Yet, Jesus prayed for the rotten because he loved the rotten. In this situation prayer could accompany a revival of the heart on Wall Street. Christian leaders need to lead during this financial crisis, which is threatening to become one of the greatest in our nation's history.
We can hope that these are only "rough spots along the road." Or "You have to throw out the history books because there's really nothing to compare this to," said one chief investment officer.
A chief market strategist said the magnitude of the financial industry fallout is unprecedented, and could only be compared to the Great Depression of the 1930s or the railroad bankruptcies of the 1800s.
NYC financial industry may lose 150,000 jobs this year. Ministries and churches that rely on donations from the financial industry should expect a 25 percent drop in giving.
Yet, we shouldn't be too alarmist because it could create a sense of panic.
We should recognize the intense pressure on our brothers and sisters in the financial industry. In discussions with financial leaders earlier this year I found that their spiritual and emotional condition was already sending an //SOS// for help.
Now, they may be shouting for the life buoy.
Pray for more of Jesus on Wall Street.

Pray for the moneylenders!" now THAT REALLY blows the mind!
The bankers, who are really the ones who rule, have already bought and paid for Obama and McCain. Take a look at The Bible.Proverbs 22:7 will do for a start
The only example of physical violence committed by Jesus is when he threw the money changers out of the Temple. They soon did away with Him didn't they? Page 757of Unger's Bible Dictionary describes "Money Changer." It is far worse today than it was then.
While on the subject of "debt" consider the great African Debt Forgiveness scam of a few years ago which was trumpeted by some "Christian" luminaries.. It was NOT debt forgiveness, it was debt transfer to the taxpayers of various countries An example of REAL debt FORGIVENESS, and of what a politician should REALLY be like, is in Nehemiah chapter 5.
In all the 30 plus years I went to church, I do not think I ever heard a sermon preached on Prov 22:7 or Nehemiah 5. The church is part of the problem today, not the solution. Away from the Bible,
Do a Google search on "He who impugns the usurer imperils the state."
If you want to see the REAL bankers’ story, Google search, "Money As Debt" It is free. A copy of "Money As Debt" should be sent to every church and be shown as a public event, so that not only the "sheeple" in the congregation could find out what is going on, but also the general public.
There are other scriptures that are relevant, such as James 2:16 "If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?"
I expect the church to continue doing "more of the same" like the politicians do-Putting bandaids over cancer.

While I appreciate the sincere concern for 'prayer' especially for our brothers in the 'heat' of this mess, Almighty God's judgment cannot be averted on the 'greed' and corruption in the world financial market. The Lord gave a well known, man of God, back in the early 1980's a long extended 'word' on this particular 'time' and told him, it would be 'His' sovereign judgment on the utterly, corrupted, world financial system, the depth of which cannot be described. This is just another 'microcosm' of the 'End-time' melt down, that cannot be avoided. All who name the Name of Christ, as Saviour and Lord, need to really get serious with 'Him.'

Praying for financial industries? What are they going to pray for.? For more frofit and financial crookedness,? Fanny thing . Jesus said " Why do you call me "Lord Lord" and do not do what I asked you to do.
Pray for the people in Haiti that 'poor already are getting the brunt of all the Storms.
Is this Christianity . ? I think not . Religious perhaps but so are the Muslims and they pray all day.

I know folks who put their money in a bank, expecting good service in person and online, perfect monthly statements, and even to be paid interest! How does this happen? Moneylending. If you don't like it, don't bank.
The credit crunch can be traced back to LBJ's administration, when he turned Fannie & Freddie into off-balance-sheet vehicles (remember when we were all upset when Enron did that a few years ago)?
Certainly, Fed Chairman Greenspan's easy money policy created many dangerous inflations, including the tech bubble and the housing bubble. And Secretary of HUD Andrew Cuomo twisted the arms of the GSE's into making loans to high-risk borrowers back in the late 90's.
Some people are indeed overpaid. If you make the case that Tiger Woods, Alex Rodriguez, Rick Warren, and Chuck Swindoll get too much money, then you can be consistent in complaining about the fat cats of Wall Street. But remember, without efficient capital allocation (which investment banking facilitates), where would you go to get: a mortgage, a credit card, foreign currency, stock trade, 401(k) and pension growth, student loans; capital stock for manufacturing cars, appliances, electronics, cell phones, Bibles; investment in drug development and healthcare services.
And an insured savings account?
I'd certainly love to know your wisdom.

I think the previous comments miss the point. Is Wall Street overflowing with greed, questionable ethics, and a thirst for personal power and affluence? Undoubtedly. But ISTM that the type of prayer called for is to help those caught in the trap of these influences to be freed by Christ, not to improve the situation so it can continue as it was. The hope is that the crisis will provoke real soul-searching, not just a quick fix. Mercy provokes us to pray for these people, not condemn them.

I don't seem to understand some of the comments above. Forgive me for anyone who may be offended, but what is the difference between those bankers who make millions of dollars on Wall Street and hoard it for themselves, and Christians who go to church every Sunday? Is it not that Christ has revealed Himself to some and not others? Our own self-righteousness is not what gets us to Heaven. God does. With that said, our condemnation of Wall Street bankers seems a bit appalling. Yes, they are sinful for their greed. Yes, they deserve what they are getting. Even more, they deserve to go to Hell...but so do we. Out of our love for Christ (who died a death we could not die so that we might live a life we do not deserve to live), we should have compassion on those who do not see God as we do. We SHOULD pray for them. Pray that Christ would be revealed to them before it is eternally too late. Condemnation and final judgment are for Christ alone to give, not us.

Pray that these people get reformed and saved. Pray that God convicts them of their greed. . Pray emtional healing for all the victims of this mess including the employees of the instutions who were probably innocent. My God will hold them responsible for all of the lives they have wrecked as result of their shortsightedness and lack of stewardship. Maybe this will be a wake up call for us all. Where is your hope and trust ? Jesus would have said God knows you need all of these things and pagans run after these things in his discourse on worry if believers did not have the tendency to get preoccupied with material things. Money is essential to living but not the point of life. Too many people have forgotten that. Our modern paper and metal currency has value expect the value we place on it.

I think God as a purposse in everything according His will. He always bring good things from the the diccicult time regardless the rich and poor. Romans 8:28 and Jeremia 29:11

Ditto to Adrienne and J. L.
Jesus gave everyone what they needed spiritually (and physically) - food, healing, reprimanding, etc. What the people in question need is salvation. And surely Jesus prayed for the money-changers and Pharisees; see Matthew 5:44.

OK, I am disgusted with Wall Street too, but just to play devil's advocate here, let me reframe things a bit. First of all, this isn't "It's a Wonderful Life" any more - when you take out a mortgage, the money comes from Wall Street.
BEFORE:
People with bad ("subprime") credit ratings often couldn't get mortgages. So they couldn't buy houses. That means they couldn't build equity & were stuck throwing away rent checks every month.
THEN:
Wall Street came up with a clever way to better spread out (it thought) & chop up the risk of investing in these mortgages. That allowed them to significantly increase the amount of lending to individuals with poor credit ratings. Allowing them to get mortgages ("affordable housing").
UNFORTUNATELY:
Main Street lenders (no doubt influenced by greed) became increasingly lax in qualifying homebuyers and explaining to them the risks they were taking. Homebuyers (perhaps also influenced by greed and maybe naivete) didn't pay attention to "minor" details like future rate increases and balloon payments. And... last but not least, Wall Street's risk analysis failed.
Bottom line: this is a complicated issue and it turns out there are specks in our eyes, too, folks.
