Anti-Abortion Super Bowl Ad Rejected by NBC

YouTube video portraying Obama as an unborn child axed from advertising lineup.

A YouTube hit portraying President Obama as an unborn child was rejected by NBC for a Super Bowl advertisement, The Washington Times reports.

Fidelis, a Chicago-based Catholic organization, premiered the 30-second ad on January 20 on Black Entertainment Television, Julia Duin writes.

Brian Burch, president of Fidelis, said NBC originally responded with a proposal for a package including ads on NBC-owned or operated stations in the country's top 10 markets plus an additional four cities for a price tag of $1.5 million to $1.8 million. The immensely popular football game is known for the unusual and trendy kinds of ads it attracts.

"We put out the call to our members and large pro-life benefactors who told us they would put up significant dollars to make this happen," Mr. Burch said. "I was told the ad was approved and then there were a number of attorneys working on it. Then I was told they didn't want to run political or advocacy ads."

The ad opens with an ultrasound. "Despite the hardships he will endure, this child will become," a voice-over says as a photo of Obama comes on the screen, "the first African American President."
"Life. Imagine the Potential," the caption concludes.

Not sure why "Newsbusters" is giving you a hard time over using the term "anti-abortion" in your headline. In my opinion it is more accurate than "pro-life", since the latter fails to take into account when killing may be necessary, as in the case of self-defence, capital punishment or a just war.

"Anti-abortion"? Whatever happened to "Pro Life"?

How in the world can one look at the ad in question and label it anti-abortion? If ever there was a PRO-life ad, this is it. The simple message at the end: Life: Imagine the potential. It is not a confrontational, in-your-face type ad.

Come on Christiaity Today and Ms. Pulliam, you can do better.

The fact that the network has decided not to air this gives me an uneasy feeling that we may be seeing the beginning of our freedom of speech being stripped but it all these stems back to the issue of abortion.

We need to get on our knees and pray for our leaders.

Take care,
Amy

I think it's a cool ad and I wish it could be aired, but it's silly to think this is some anti-life conspiracy keeping it off the air. NBC is a corporation that wants to make money. They don't do that by making people mad. They have turned down left wing, anti-war, pro-animal-rights, and pro-choice ads in the past. It's smart of Fidelis to try to put it on, knowing it will be turned down. A lot of people will end up seeing it just because of the "controversy."

So sad, it does not matter what word or phrase you use life should never be taken away, whether in the womb or outside of the womb.A precious gift from God is a life, whether mother or father fosake you, then the Lord will take you up.

News Busters makes an interesting point about "anti-abortion" language. I had no frickin' idea the Associated Press handbook says to be pro-abortion is "abortion rights" and pro-life is "anti-abortion"! Just like saying "gay rights" versus "anti-gay marriage" - it implies that one side stands for rights, while the other side stands against rights. While I found no problem with your usage of "anti-abortion," Sarah, all followers of truth should be "wise as serpents" in how we use our words. One's use of "rights" language shapes how one thinks - read: NewSpeak, 1984. Whether or not you write like a man, I know you will continue to be circumspect in how you use words in your posts, an exceptional case in the blogging world.

NBC and all who deny this video are a bunch of chickens! What are you so afraid of could it be the truth! It makes me sick!

Below is the response CT online managing editor Ted Olsen sent to Newsbusters (which has updated their post with his comments):

A two-second search would have shown that we use pro-life quite a bit, Ken. What was the point of the post? To suggest that CT is compromising on abortion? What the heck?

The headline is specific. The ad is against abortion. It's not about embryonic stem cells, assisted suicide, emergency "contraception," etc. It's about abortion. And it's against it. It's an anti-abortion ad from a pro-life group.

Can you name one mainstream pro-life group that considers anti-abortion pejorative?

Proud to be anti-abortion,
Ted

I love the video and don't particularly like NBC, but I wonder if we're being too harsh on them? Could their two-sided reaction indicate that they didn't mind the video but actually wanted to avoid politics?

Here's a test: Did they air any political ads yesterday? Have they done so in recent Super Bowls?

...I think it's a political move... Since Obama is in the ad, maybe they didn't want to effect him. For example, did he consent to the video?

The ad is cool, but I think we're missing the big picture. Whether you are "pro-choice" "anti-abortion" or whatever label, this ad could be a great dialog starter. The abortion issue seems to me to be a question of whose life do we value more? We should be asking that question about a lot of things. Think about the life decision we or our policies make for us everyday. Folks are happy to yell out from either side of the issue, but do we think about other life decisions that people live with? I don't think you can separate abortion from poverty, poor education, capital punishment, or substandard health care; all of these issues affect our lives, the quality of our lives, and in many cases, the length of our lives. It's not just abortion that kills life; apathy and hate do, too.

When we chose ( or decide if you like that word more) to fund war or sports teams, bigger and better prisons, and new methods of capital punishment over education, health care, and other social programs, we are practicing abortion on everyone affected.

NBC should show the video and invite viewers to participate in public forums. We need to stop finding ways to split ourselves from each other. It's the only way we can truly say we value life, all life.

It's antiabortion, period. It's antisex, period. It's about shoving a dogma down a free people's throat and it's about the enslavement of women, girls and female infants.

Everyone has a destiny and a purpose, just like the baby in the ultrasound. Do we have a "right" to take that away before they have a chance to fulfill it?
Yes, we are a free people, but we are only so because our forefathers fought for us and our mothers cared for us. Will we deny the next generation the same?

Super Bowl half time will feature a "CONVICTED FELON" child porn collector. Pete Townsend of The Who. Now there's a message being sent.
