Octuplets' Mom Says CA Megachurch Will Help Her

Update: Calvary Chapel-Golden Springs responds, 'no we will not.'

Calvary Chapel?Golden Springs, a nondenominational megachurch in Diamond Bar, California, will be providing assistance in the form of childcare to Nadya Suleman, the single mother whose birth to octuplets by in-vitro fertilization January 26 has received much media attention (and criticism) the last two weeks.

Pastor Rex Wolins told the Whittier Daily News that Calvary's women's ministry is gathering volunteers to help Suleman once her octuplets, born nine weeks premature but in good health, come home from the hospital. Suleman has six other children ages 2?7 who were also conceived by in-vitro fertilization.

Suleman and her publicist told Whittier Daily News that she attended Calvary in the past. "[Suleman] thought it was a wonderful church," said publicist Mike Furtney. "She was more than delighted to take her kids up there. I think they went there frequently."

Pastor Wolins says he does not remember Suleman and does not know other members who do. "We just know this person is extremely hurting . . . and this church wants to take care of needs, whether she did or she didn't attend this church," said Wolins.

According to yesterday's Los Angeles Times, Suleman has no job or income, and owes $50,000 in student loans. Beyond Calvary's support, Suleman may also qualify to receive large amounts of public assistance in the form of food stamps, healthcare reimbursements from Medi-Cal, and federal security income for her three children who are disabled (not including the octuplets).

Update: Calvary Chapel released a statement on Friday, February 13, saying that, in contrast to the claims of Ms. Suleman and Whittier Daily News 's story, the church will not be providing her assistance in the form of establishing a foundation, providing monies, or helping her find a house. Associate pastor Beau De Graffenreid made the following statement in a recorded press conference: "[W]e are unable to confirm or deny whether she actively attends Calvary Chapel, Golden Springs. We can say, however, that no one currently on staff knows her, and to the best of our knowledge, Ms. Suleman's only contact with us was a minor inquiry regarding our children's ministry."

However, Pastor De Graffenreid goes on to say that his church is "relieved that the birth of these infants was successful. Because of the physical and emotional strain that these eight newborn babies will place upon her and her other six children, they will be in need of spiritual guidance, childcare assistance 24 hours a day from her local community for many years to come . . . We would ask that Christians everywhere pray for her and these babies."

OH, PULEEZE!!! THIS WOMAN NEEDS SERIOUS MENTAL HELP, NOT CHILDCARE HELP FROM SOME CHURCH WOMEN'S GROUP! AND THESE CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE LEFT WITH HER!!! I HOPE CHILDREN'S SERVICES STEPS IN. UCK!!! THIS WHOLE STORY NAUSEATES AND INFURIATES ME. PULEEZE..... YOUR CHURCH WILL NOT GET ANY GOOD PR FROM DOING THIS, BELIEVE ME.

This stupid female has lied to herself, her parents, the government, the media and her PR folks (who are now replicating the lies). What is it going to take for the federal and state government to intervene and stop this circus - and make this type of situation so unatractive in the future no one will even want to try it? This drain on public resources will only serve to bring out the kooks and nuts and religeous idiots who want a piece of the action. I feel for the children who are extremely unlikely to lead any kind of normal - and I do mean sub-normal - lives. It will be a miracle if they make it to adulthhod without scars, both physiological and psychological. Every time she opens her mouth or her mind (and the website) she further demostrates her narcissistic and mentally unbalanced position. Now all we need to know is who did (how many and how much) surgeries - or not, and WHO IS THE IDIOT FATHER!

I bet that you folks will be with the children more than Nadya.
She's going to disappear while you deal with the stinky diapers.
She's used to having other people care for her children, just drop them off at the school day care, just leave them with mom.
Just let the church members take care of them.

It's nice of you to help, but honestly the best thing for these children would be for Child Protective Services to step in and adopt them out to people who are morally, psychologically, financially able to raise them properly.

So, this woman has leeched 50K from student loans, 168K from Worker's Comp, what will be in excess of 2million from the State of California, federal gov't for food stamps, who knows how much from media (some report that NBC did fund Suleman, despite their claims not to have). Now, she has sucked a church into her fame and fortune scheme.

I feel warm and fuzzy about the generosity of CC, and the kids can only profit from the kindness of good Christians, but this is a case of being gentle as doves but not at wise as serpents. This is a case of being dupes.

I suggest--strongly-- that the octuplets be taken from this unstable and self-absorbed woman--who somehow has money for plastic surgery--and given to families who will provide stable, loving, sane homes. Even her own mother is frazzled and disapproving.

Being cynical about this lady's motives, I am not convinced that Suleman attended this church at all. Funny how no one recalls her. A woman with six kids? No one remembers her? Con people know that churches are a prime feeding trough.

Hm. The story just gets odder and odder.

Thankfully in the torrent of hate that has been directed at this woman there is a response of love. Thank you Cavalry Chapel for reaching out like this. When Jesus said "let the little children come to me" he didn't add, "unless they are on welfare or their mothers behaved scandalously". I am very happy to read that she will have your support!

Someone mentioned above that she will be eligible for large amounts of public assistance for these kids? How is that?
If she has all these book deals, tv programs etc. she would be able to pay for it herself.

I do not want to pay for their care!

Our California leader is already talking about delaying my refund for the state!

Thank-you for helping. If I lived in CA I would volunteer myself. I have 10 kids myself-5 whom I have adopted. Are you all going to start throwing rocks at me too. I bet if we found out from parents across the world whether they waited until they could afford to have one child whether they waited; I bet that number would be very small. Shame on all of you for being so judgmental. (wouldnt this be considered hate?-which is not tolerated towards any other groups such as people living alternative lifestyles) I think there are far worse things going on in this world then a woman having 8 kids at one time. How about the crime in your own back yard. And why dont you all volunteer to help instead of picking on her and letting these innocent children fall victim to your hate.

p.s. Last time I checked- this was not China. I think we are allowed to have as many kids as we want!!!

Most of the people commenting here just don't get it. This has everything to do with 14 kids including 8 newborns who are need help. let's show a little compassion here. After all, the Gospel message is one of compassion. We were saved when we were screw-ups-when we were God's enemies. Calvary Chapel has it right and its encouraging to see them step up and show all of us, what love is. Its not loving the lovely and the responsible, its loving the unlovely. It's loving sinners, in other words, people like you and me.

The mother may be problematic, but it sounds to me like the ladies of CC Diamond Bar are able to look beyond her issues and to show the love of Christ to these babies. Sure, they will be taken advantage of and will become frustrated with the mother. Sure, people will call them dupes and victims of a con-artist. Who ever said agape was without risk?

There seems to be a real tension about this woman's babies and the fact that she dared have them. The tension is basically because she's very poor, while Angelina Jolie, the woman she's being compared to, may adopt and give birth to many children and that is considered heroic because she's very rich. Calvary Chapel has done the Jesus thing by not throwing stones. Clearly, the woman has problems, but she will have more if she doesn't get support. I think she's desperate. Has anyone ever been under the burden of student loans and been unable to pay them for years? It's not inconceivable that she took out the loans with plans of establishing herself in a good career that would enable her to provide for herself and her kids. Wanting a house full of children is not wrong or greedy or irresponsible. She may have some problems we don't yet know about. I'm so ashamed at the Christian response to this person's situation. She very well may be a con-artist, but the public outcry is absolutely embarrassing.Shame on us!

Every good deed done in the name of Christ.... done for His glory and in honest love, does not fail to go unnoticed by Almighty God who sees all, and knows the motives of all. All those little babies are in His image.....including their mom....and the rest of us sinners that Jesus died for! Ralph Gaily

Spiritual help? Yes, by all means. She needs it. Counseling? Please, please have her seek help or provide it for her. Monetary help? There is a website set up to take donations, forward all your money there because after all the new information about her and her half truths and lies CC Golden Springs would just be contributing to what I call a sad scam by a troubled and manipulative woman using her children as a pity magnet. She has mental issues that need to be addressed before they manifest into an event that will hurt those kids. ALL of them. To say that CCGS is "my church" and put them on the spot when she only attended once, and that was to inquire about childcare sounds very media-manipulative, something a PR firm would come up with. CCGS's statement on their website is very well written. All help doesn't have to come in the form of a check or PayPal email.

Great Church, yes the Mother needs help, but the children have not done anything wrong and they need a chance to become productive men and womem of the Saviour.

i attend a calvary chapel in another state and although i do not agree with this woman's choice in the way she has concieved her children i do know that the women's ministry at calvary is a loving genouris group of women. hopefully they can minister to her heart and the hearts of her children so that she can know that Jesus loves her and find true happiness for herself. I read that the "donor" was a freind of hers and maybe she will marry that man I pray for her salvation, remember Jesus came in to the world to save the sinners.

It will be interesting to see if CC learns anything from their response to Ms Suleman's "self inflicted" situation. CC response is God honoring because they seek to deliver help to someone in crisis need. My concern is will they be able to continue to help these children beyond the stage of feeding and diapering them?
Will Ms Suleman completely abdicate her role as a real mother rather than a "baby factory" and allow others to provide real long time care for these children? Real compassion needs both a short term and a long term plan.

I'm very happy to see that Christians are stepping up to help out in a very unfortunate situation. We can sit around and judge this mentally ill mom, or we cam pitch in and help some children who are victims of their mother's poor choices. Go,Calvery!

I don't agree with what the mother has done, but it is not her children's fault. They can't help what she does. I am glad Christians are helping the children. They (and their mother) need someone to show them Christ's love. Maybe through what the church is doing they will come to know Christ.

IN SPITE OF THE NASTY OPINIONS OF MANY PEOPLE REGARDING NADYA AND HER CHILDREN. THE CHILDREN STILL NEED TO BE FED, CLOTHED AND CARED FOR AND THEY WILL BE. THE GOVERNMENT WILL PROVIDE MONEY EITHER TO NADYA OR TO FOSTER FAMILIES BUT EITHER WAY MONEY WILL BE SPENT FOR THE CARE OF THOSE 14 CHILDREN. THEY ARE HERE THEY ARE NOT GOING ANYWHERE AND THEY WILL BE PROVIDED FOR WITH THE HELP OF PEOPLE OR WITHOUT IT. THAT IS WHAT THE GOVERNMENT IS FOR TO BE A SAFETY NET FOR THE POOR OR THOSE WHO HAVE NO OTHER HELP.

And who are we to count her sins and her mistakes? Whether or not any of us believe the conception of these children--all fourteen of them--in Suleman's present financial and other situations was the right thing to do, there are still fourteen children that need care and a mother who needs some level of support to get to a place where she can support those children with a minimal amount of outside assistance.
Suleman and her children are in my prayers.
And, by the way, am I ever thankful that my own transgressions are not in the media--Suleman's situation is proving there are so many people much too eager to throw stones.

Of course we had to expect that old busy body Gloria Allred would stick her nose into this. Who pays her exorbant Attorney fees? Us? Why not! What would compel anyone to have artificial means of having babies when you have plenty already? How did the Doctor get paid? Isn't there any kind of cut off to having this many kids without a man/husband to help support and nurture these kids? This lady did all thus for negative attention. NO if's and's or but's. Sad to say. She placed herself way out in front of all these helpless babies. She knows exactly what she was doing and still knows how to keep it going. Can't believe there are so many idiots out there falling for this scam. She doesn't give a damn about anything but money and attention, negative or not. Someone out there is coaching her as well. You can bank on that. If someone hadn't told her about all the fanancial help she would receive for free she would never have gone through with any of this. Stand By. She may just try this one more time. She's probably planning her next trip to that pathetic sperm bank to try for 9 kids the next go around. Mark my words.

I thought I'd attach a letter I sent Mark Balmer about my situation with the church here in Melbourne I've been involved in for 12 years. I'm very disturbed about the lack of financial disclosure & the way the church reacted to my questioning it. I wrote Chuck Smith who I met on a trip to Israel with him in '93 but got no response.
I'd like to let all those attend know what's going on but haven't figured out a way to do it. After that I'm leaving it in God's hands and feel it's all I can do to change things.

Dear Pastor Mark:
I've been involved in Christian Ministry for 28 years and only once was I called before the elders of a church for discipline. The sad thing is that it wasn't for a moral failure like fornication, or stealing, or lying, or being abusive. It was for asking a simple question within a church body- “Are the churches finances open to examination”. Now that's an amazing thing...for no where in scripture did I see church authority to impose intimidation and coercion in an area of non Biblical areas of procedure and preference like financial transparency. Funny how pagan companies and government are required to be totally transparent but the church of Christ isn't?

I've struggled with writing you about this for many months for when your elders called me to meet with them I was subjected to something that I can only describe as a form of spiritual abuse. Never in my life have I been so humiliated, character and motives questioned, intimidated and coerced into accepting what is generally described by numerous pastors I've met with as 'a very bad policy and borderline abusive reaction'. I talked this over with the Pastor of the Church at Viera, 1st Baptist Eau Gallie, Larry Booth(Our Father's House), Jack Taylor, Dr. Francis Schaeffers staff at L'Abri, and Billy Graham's ministry.

All without exception were not surprised by what happened to me but sad that any church would behave in such an unbiblical and un Christlike manner-not to mention they all thought financial disclosure was essential to a healthy church.. Reminds me of Martin Luther at Wurm where the church wanted to kill the messenger rather than hear the message.

Personally I was offended when the elders at this meeting impuned my character and also rejected the idea that I could be speaking for God. What arrogance! When I wanted to meet with you to discuss this you told me in the commons “I'm not interested”. In my 15 years with Peter Lord's church he would have never said such a rude thing to any of his flock..no matter how he felt about them. But I guess you're not Peter.

I hope you take this in the right light. Whether you change your policy or not is between you, the church and God. In any case I certainly think a public apology is warranted. Otherwise I'm planning on going public with this experience that the body might be aware that the church is entering an area of control that I have only experienced in religious cults.

Sincerely,

Chip Rohlke

I believe two parties are using each other for publicity, they are both appealing to the 'good' that exists in all people. If this stunt were to be successful, the church increases how much they take in monetary wise, and the mother of the octuplets, receives sympathy, and the sales of whatever she has out there go up. Basically, I believe it to be a scam, a scam to get people to part with their money.

If all people that go to church beleive that a child is a gift from god, it was her that decided to implanted herself with so many "gifts" so therefore she should be the one to care for them and support them instead of relying on others.Churches are for people that need something to believe in so they choose god.
