Student Suspended From Christian College for Appearing in Gay Porn

A Grove City College senior is suspended after a fellow student finds images of him under a pseudonym.

Grove City College has placed a student on a one-year suspension for appearing in gay porn after an e-mail with images of him spread across campus.

John Gechter, a senior majoring in molecular biology, earned as much as $11,000 per weekend to film more than a dozen videos in Chicago, Miami, and Los Angeles, according to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Anya Sostek reports that Gechter was charged with sexual misconduct, participation in the public display of pornography and engaging in "conduct that is contrary to the mission and values of Grove City College and likely to bring dishonor to the College."

Grove City released a statement to the Post-Gazette yesterday about Gechter, who says he is bisexual.

"The student's suspension resulted from his involvement in the adult pornography industry. The student acknowledged that he was employed in the adult entertainment industry and that he knew that violated the student code of conduct. Throughout this process, his sexual orientation was not a factor in the decision."

Someone found Gechter's images on the Internet and forwarded them to students at Grove City. Gechter estimated that the e-mail had reached two-thirds of the student population by the next day, according to Sostek.

Though Mr. Gechter said that his porn career opened doors for him in terms of modeling and possibly acting, he now wishes that he hadn't done it, given the academic consequences and the pain that it has caused his religious family.

When he broke the news, his mother started "praying and fasting." His father was upset, but he said they still love him.

He has retained a lawyer and is contemplating a lawsuit against Grove City. Though he admits that some of his rule violations were fairly clear, he doesn't feel like the school is demonstrating Christian values of love and forgiveness. The whole experience, he said, has caused him to re-examine his Christian beliefs.

Gechter told The Herald that he started appearing in gay porn after he was referred to the industry through a modeling agency during his sophomore year.

Grove City spokeswoman Amy Clingensmith said the college's main concern was for Gechter.

"Clearly something happened since he's been here for four years that led him down this unfortunate path," she told The Herald. "We want to get him out of that type of life."

A similar incident occured at another Christian college in the fall of 2007. A senior at Wheaton College was placed on disciplinary probation after he appeared in a video advertisement for Abercrombie & Fitch. The video portrays the student with his shirt off in several scenes, lying in a bed and in a car with a young woman.

Update: The Post-Tribune reported that a fellow student sent initial e-mails with evidence of Gechter's work. "The administration did not receive any images via email or any other source of him from any student," the college told CT.

Gechter estimated that the e-mail had reached two-thirds of the student population by the next day, according to Sostek.
So 2/3 of the students were sending and receiving gay porn photos and no action was taken against them? I'm sure Grove City has some rules about that.

If upon entry to the college the students agree not to view pornographic images, I hope that the "fellow student" who found the images online is at least called out on it. You don't just come across gay porn while checking your email or researching organic chemistry reactions.

If this has not already been done, someone from the college should sit down with the student and discuss why they are suspending him. I can appreciate why the decision was made, but at the same time I can understand how it would feel impersonal, uncaring, and unloving.

I wonder if the school has decided to keep his tuition payments for the semester? If so, do they know where that particular money came from? It would be a shame to find out that Grove City College is in any way being funded by such an brazen industry.

The alleged email sent around by students is only one side of the story. Before the hype, it was rumored that Gechter himself told someone about his career. I believed that he would not be stupid enough to do such a thing, but then again, he did apparently think that he wouldn't get kicked out for starring in pornography.

In fairness, the account above does not state that the initial tip-off came from a student, nor does it say that the emails contained porn. It may have just been links to a web page, in which case is there no web filtering in the college or on their email gateway?

This would be standard practice in business

there is an internet filtering system in place at GCC. the student must have been looking pretty 'hard' to find these pictures of john.

Has anyone else stopped to think these stories are all written from the student's perspective? Does anyone know if administrators ministered to him during the process? Was he repentant? Have the 200 emails been produced? Did the throwing of fruit even take place? I'm note weighing in, because I am sure the facts will never be known. Probably a shame for the college.

This is a tragedy for the young man. The porn industry is destructive to the lives of all the people involved. His family is devasted. And the school has been embarrassed. Yet it's obvious from many of the posts here that there are gay people who are angry and only concerned about the student's right to do whatever he wants to do. Of course, he can pursue this lifestyle if he wishes. But regarding his education at this school, he entered into an agreement. He knew their rules and he broke them knowingly. The school may or may not be required to refund his money depending on when during the school year he leaves. He's already attended a certain amount of classes. Teachers still need to be paid and shouldn't be penalized for this young man's failure to live up to his agreement. He made what amounts to a contract and as an adult he'll have to abide by it. We all have to face the consequences of the choices we make in life.

I think anyone of legal age who considers doing a porno gay or straight should really think twice about it. Once its done, its done and theres no going back as most of it ends up on the internet in some shape or form so its there forever. All consequences should be considered and then an informed decision should be made and NOT just based on financial reasons as most of these guys and girls do.

If John Gechter gets suspended from school for appearing in porn, then the student who was viewing porn and told on John Gechter should be suspended as well. What is good for the goose is good for the gander.
