Bill - This isn't too little too late. The bill has not even had a second reading. In Uganda, a private member's bill must have three readings. This bill has had only one. With evangelicals here speaking out along with glbt people, there has been a willingness to rethink the issue in Uganda. Rev. Warren's statement is a very vital aspect of advocacy.

Bill, Instead of condemning and complaining, why don't you do something more productive and let your voice be heard to the Ugandan officials? Your hatred towards Christians would be better directed to those responsible for this terrible piece of legislation. Same with Daniel's comments.

I may condemn homosexuality as an abhorrent and damaging lifestyle, but any Christian who would bless killing those living in this sin should look once agin at their own salvation and whether or not it's valid.

So, CT chose not to report on this until they could report that Warren had FINALLY come out in opposition to this horrific bill. But this story makes it sound like Warren has been opposed to the bill for some time. Warren didn't just "fail to rush out." He actively passed up on chances to speak out against the bill. Some of you critize Rick Warren for not publicly opposing the bill in Uganda when it was first in the news in October. Emerging countries such as Uganda resent other countries especially the United States criticizing what they do or not do. Rick was trying to discourage this bill behind the scene because he was being sensitive and respectful to Unganda and not appear as a bully. To Daniel and Bill: not until you have walked in the shoes of those like Rick Warren; visited countries like Uganda or lived in those countries as a career missionary who have been told by their mission agency that they are there to help change lives and not to meddle in politics because missionaries are not a citizen of that country. Christians are there to change hearts which in turn will change lives, which will change families, which will change clans, which will change villiages then towns.

Eriic, Christians were not responsible for the Holocaust; Hitler and his Nazis were responsible for the Holocaust. They were far from Christian. Hitler was actually known to be obsessed with the occult; he wasn't Christian. I have some questions for you, though. How many true Christians, pastors, missionaries, etc., have you actually spoken with about their beliefs? How much do you really know about Christianity? I ask because it seems to me that your statements are nothing but false assumptions about us. As for the bill, which is clearly unjust and un-Christian, how many Christians in Uganda, or anywhere for that matter, actually supported the original version of it? Honestly, I think Atheists dehumanize us Christians more often than any Christian dehumanizes anyone, which would go against one of the greatest commandments given to us by Christ Himself (in case you didn't know that).

Even without the death penalty for HIV+ gays, the bill still proivdes for life in prison for what David Hardy dehumanizingly calls "garden variety homosexuals," and for severe prison sentences for friends, family and colleagues of gays who fail to immediately turn in to the police any/all of the gay people they know. One of the chief supporters of the bill BEFORE the death penalty was removed was the Anglican Bishop of Uganda, one of the African prelates to whom some break-away conservative Episcopalians in this country have aligned. All of this has been widely reported, see the links above, for anyone who cares to know which of our so-called leaders is supporting what. The legislation remains horrific, even without the death penalty.

Rick Warren didn't have any trouble speaking out publicly when the Ugandans were doing things he wanted. Some things are just so objectively horrific that "I don't take sides" can only be seen as moral surrender to evil.

Public health records demonstrate that homosexuals, representing 2 percent of America's population, suffer vastly disproportionate percentages of several of America's most serious STDs, with incidences among homosexuals of diseases like gonorrhea, syphilis, hepatitis A and B, cytomegalovirus, shigellosis, giardiasis, amoebic bowel disease and herpes far exceeding their presence in the general population. These are due to common homosexual practices that include fellatio, anilingus, digital stimulation of the rectum and ingestion of urine and feces.

An exhaustive study in The New England Journal of Medicine, medical literature's only study reporting on homosexuals who kept sexual "diaries," indicated the average homosexual ingests the fecal material of 23 different men each year. The same study indicated the number of annual sexual partners averaged nearly 100. Homosexuals averaged, per year, fellating 106 different men and swallowing 50 of their seminal ejaculations, and 72 penile penetrations of the anus. Rick Warren and the other American evangelicals that have preached against homosexuality in Africa are absolutely correct to denounce Uganda's proposed legislation.
Imagine being the parent of a child who identifies as gay in Uganda. The suicide rate in the USA for GLBT youth is alarming; what must it be like there?
Warren et al's "homosexuals do not deserve equal rights" routine is heard loud and clear around the world, and empowers and encourages those who would strip basic civil rights from one of God's beloved minorities. Africa must be confused at their recent "We denounce this" statement. You can't have it both ways, people -- you're either on one side or the other.

Churches do hire men and some hire women to work for them and with them. To do the preaching and teaching of the Word of God first and above anything else. They are paid a Salary or compensation by the church. They are not paid by the Government, (at least in this country) neither they are paid by any Political party or institution or whatever have you.

If a Minister/pastor involves himself/herself in any other endeavor. Like a form of Social-gospel he may do it on his/her own. But other than practicing hospitality there is nothing in Scriptures demanding the such.

So again I find these pretensions and demands on the part of some to be a phony and nothing else. That is not the "job" of Ministers/pastors. God did not call them to be cowboys or zoo keepers, but to be sheperds of the sheep. Those who care for goats, pigs, dogs, chickens, horses etc don't go by the name of sheperds. In a nation which sanctions abortion, why would Christians feel the need to be seen as essentially lobbying for homosexual rights? Um, the fact is that heterosexual women contract AIDS with regular frequency, while lesbians are virtually untounched by AIDS. So, if AIDs is the natural consquence of unhealthy behavior, it looks like God really hates heterosexualy (in females, at least).

Women are infected more because they have sex with men who are bisexual or who engage in needle sharing. Not because God hates them (which is a stupid statement).In the black community, black women are infected at a higher rate than white women because of black men who are on the "down low". That's men who sleep with both women and men. Also, More magazine did an article about the fact that middle aged women (black & white) are now being infected at high rates. Why? because they slept with men who were secretly gay. Lesbians don't get infected because they sleep with each other. As long as they don't make the mistake of sleeping with a man, their chances of getting infected are zero. Same for those who are abstinent or for virgins who marry and stay committed.

Heterosexual women get infected with HIV/AIDs because they have sex with males, i.e. heterosexual intercourse is an effective transmittor of disease. Semen carries the AIDS virus. No semen, no AIDS transmission. That's why lesbians are virtually free of AIDS, but gay men (like heterosexual women) can be infected.

•Sexual Health. Lesbian women are at risk for many of the same STIs as heterosexual women. Lesbian women can transmit STIs to each other through skin-to-skin contact, mucosa contact, vaginal fluids, and menstrual blood. Sharing sex toys is another method of transmitting STIs. These are common STIs that can be passed between women:

•Bacterial vaginosis (BV). Although we don’t know for sure that BV is caused by a sexually transmitted agent, BV occurs more commonly among women who have recently acquired other STI’s, or who have recently had unprotected sex. For reasons that are unclear, BV is more common in lesbian and bisexual women than heterosexual women, and frequently occurs in both members of lesbian couples. BV happens when the normal bacteria in the vagina get out of balance. Sometimes, BV causes no symptoms, but over half of affected women have a vaginal discharge with a fishy odor or vaginal itching. If left untreated, BV can increase a woman’s chances of getting other STIs such as HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and pelvic inflammatory disease.

•Human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV can cause genital warts and abnormal changes on the cervix that can lead to cancer, if it is not treated. Most people with HPV or genital warts don’t know they are infected until they have had a Pap test because they may not have symptoms, but the virus can still be spread by contact. Lesbians can transmit HPV through direct genital skin-to-skin contact or by the virus traveling on hands or sex toys. Some women and their doctors wrongly assume that lesbian women do not need a regular Pap test. However, the virus can be spread by lesbian sexual activity, and many lesbians have been sexual with men so it is recommended that lesbian women have a Pap test. This simple test is an effective method of detecting abnormal cells on the cervix that can lead to cancer. Begin getting Pap tests no later than age 21 or sooner if you’re sexually active. These recommendations apply equally to lesbians who’ve never had sex with men, as cervical cancer caused by HPV has been seen in this group of women.

•Trichomoniasis “Trich”. It is caused by a parasite that can be passed from one person to another during sexual contact. It can also be picked up from contact with damp, moist objects such as towels or wet clothing. Trich is spread through sexual contact with an infected person. Signs include yellow, green, or gray vaginal discharge (often foamy) with a strong odor; discomfort during sex and when urinating; irritation and itching of the genital area; and lower abdominal pain in rare cases. To tell if you have trich, your doctor or nurse will do a pelvic exam and lab test. A pelvic exam can show small red sores, or ulcerations, on the wall of the vagina or on the cervix. Trich is treated with antibiotics.

•Herpes. Herpes is a virus that can produce sores (also called lesions) in and around the vaginal area, on the penis, around the anal opening, and on the buttocks or thighs. Occasionally, sores also appear on other parts of the body where the virus has entered through broken skin. Most people get genital herpes by having sex with someone who is shedding the herpes virus during periods when an outbreak is not visible. The most common cause of recurrent genital herpes is HSV-2, which is transmitted through direct genital contact. HSV-1 is another herpes virus that usually infects the mouth and causes oral cold sores, but can also be transmitted to the genital area through oral sex. Lesbians can transmit this virus to each other if they have intimate contact with someone with a lesion or touching infected skin even when an outbreak is not visible.

•Syphilis. Syphilis is an STI caused by bacteria. Syphilis is passed through direct contact with a syphilis sore during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. A bizarre belief among many African black men that sex with a virgin -- even a child or baby -- can cure HIV/AIDS is fueling what is already one of the highest child sexual exploitation rates in the world.

According to the latest report by South Africa's Police Service, children are the victims of 41 percent of all rapes and attempted rapes reported in the country. Over 15 percent of all reported rapes are against children under 11, and another 26 percent against children 12-17. For the year 2000, some 58 children were raped or the victims of rape attempts in South Africa every single day.

The trend is worsening. Babies as young as only a few months old are being raped almost daily. Many black South African men infected with AIDS erroneously believe that by having sex with a virgin -- even a baby -- they will be cured of AIDS or their HIV infection.

South African police statistics show that last year alone, 21,538 rapes and attempted rapes of children under the age of 18 were reported. The KwaZulu-Natal province, which includes Durban, where concern has already been expressed over the sharp rise in child abuse cases, was top of the list with 4,797 reported cases in 2000, followed by Gauteng province (formerly Transvaal, which includes Johannesburg) with 4,316.

For the first six months of 2001, some 10,242 cases were reported, and once again KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest figure with 2,236, followed by Gauteng with 2,076.
This level of crime contrasts with 1994, for example, when a total of 7,559 cases were reported – about one third of the current level. The figure increased dramatically over the next three years and in 1997 stood at 15,336.

It is believed that a large percentage of incidents go unreported, and police have launched extensive campaigns to inform women and children of their rights.

Police said research conducted over the past five years indicated that in 83 percent of sexual abuse cases, the perpetrators were known to their victims.

I think people nee to give Rick Warren a break. Just because we disagree with him on the gay marriage thing doesn't mean that everything he does is wrong. This right here: GOOD.
