What Is Gleanings?

At Christianity Today, we’re constantly tracking important developments in the church and the world. Often we use our network of reporters around the world (and for that, visit our main site). But we also monitor other news outlets, bloggers, newsmakers’ social media feeds, and countless other information streams. Gleanings compiles the most urgent and interesting items we’ve found, explains why you need to know about them, and gives you the background you need to understand them. It’s our snapshot of what God is doing in the world, hour by hour.

Joni Eareckson Tada to undergo surgery for breast cancer

Breaking news:

Disability advocate Joni Eareckson Tada has been diagnosed with breast cancer and is expected to have surgery on Monday, June 28.

According to a news release from her organization, Joni and Friends:

Internationally-beloved disability advocate, artist and quadriplegic Joni Eareckson Tada has been diagnosed with breast cancer, it was announced today by Doug Mazza, Joni and Friends International Disability Center president and COO, following confirmation by her physicians.

“Joni is to undergo several more tests, followed by surgery within the week,” said Mazza. “The extent of the cancer will not be determined until the procedure.” Ken Tada, Joni’s husband of nearly 28 years, is very hopeful. “The doctors have assured us that more advancements have been made in the last five years in treating breast cancer then in the last 150 years,” he said. “We are confident Joni is in very good hands.” Joni echoed Ken’s sentiments. “I’ve often said that our afflictions come from the hand of our all-wise and sovereign God, who loves us and wants what is best for us. So, although cancer is something new, I am content to receive from God whatever He deems fit for me,” she said. “Yes, it’s alarming, but rest assured that Ken and I are utterly convinced that God is going to use this to stretch our faith, brighten our hope and strengthen our witness to others.”

May God strengthen Joni & Ken as they deal with this reality that God has allowed into their lives. I will be praying here in Rio de Janeiro.

Joni is an amazing example of perseverance and submission to God's will. May God in His mercy and goodness and love for Joni and Ken grant complete healing from this cancer. I am so blessed by the attitude they both express in the midst of trials.
Also, Joni, thanks for praying for my son as he graduated from Biola this past May. It truly touched me that you promised to pray for each one as they received their diploma in the hot sun. You inspired me to do the same.

I read one of Joni's books about healing, and it was full of wonderful insight....my husband and I will lift her and Ken up in prayers. We are grateful for their witness to God's mercy & goodness even when life presents many challenges!

I am a 5 year breast cancer survivor. I know how hard it is to have someone call you to tell you that you have cancer. God is good and He allows these things to happen for a reason. Joni has been a blessing and an angel send from God. I know she will be fine, God is always with her. May God give Joni and her family strength, wisdom, peace and most of all Faith. God bless Joni and her family

Hi, Joni,

I have been reading a couple of your books and I really appreciate and admire your insight and revelations from GOD. They are very deep! Today, I first heard about the cancer that you are experiencing. You are heavy on my mind and heart and I will ask GOD to heal you and help you to continue in HIS "perfect peace."

Just a few of the many CHRISTians who I highly respect and look to as models for GODly submission, influence and service are Billy and Franklin Graham, Adrian Rogers (who is in heaven), and most assuredly "you," et al. I wish you well, Joni.

Loving you from a distance, dear one,

Sharon

Joni... I will be praying for you on Monday. I do anesthesia for a living so I will also be praying for your surgeon and surgical team.
Your the only woman I know that can make me cry just from hearing your sweet voice on the radio with some message. I don't know how many times I have had to pull my car off the road and listen to you.
God Bless

Oh Dear Joni. I feel sad. I am in the midst of my 2nd bout of cancer. God has destined this for me, I know. I had 5 surgeries in just a matter of weeks, to keep correcting things that kept going wrong. I began losing faith. I have admired you forever. You are a gift to us from God. You are the witness God reminds us about in scripture, who has gone before us, as an example of how to keep our hope and faith in these awful trials. I am learning from you. God's Rainbow doesn't come on clear days. It is seen only in the rain, or at the edge of a storm. I will keep praying for you, as I have for years and years. God hears your name on my lips constantly. I love you. (from Las Vegas)

I've been blessed by Joni's ministry and pray for her healing. Though God allows it, cancer is not a gift from God. I have no doubt that He will bring something beautiful out of even this, but that doesn't change the evil of cancer. May the surgeons have wisdom and may God deliver her.

Dear Joni, I will be praying for you on the 28th, I travelled this way in 2006 and for me it was God's answer to helaing my marriage as my husband suddenly realized how much I meant to him and now we are very happy and I thank God my cancer has been in remission for 3 years now. Three days before I discovered the large lump in my r.breast i woke up one morning to hear the voice of an older man, deep and rich saying "Joy I love you", I realized at once that Father was talking to me and this experience kept me going throughout what was quite a trying time and I have never forgotten that voice, I pray He will comfort you in the same way.

Dearest Joni, i met you the first day out of rehab after my horse accident and resulting SCI.
You were giving a right to life speech in Visalia Ca that very day. There was a long line of people wanting to meet you, i was so uncomfortable, first day in the world of that wheelchair. You came to the table and met me and my husband.
You also got information and sent me a book which i read in my next rehab session.
I cannot tell you what you have done for me. All the years i listened to you BEFORE my accident, i had your tapes, listened to you every day on the radio etc, and then God showed me why, God, through you, was preparing me to be strong and faithful,
I watch your tv program, very humbling when i need reminding we all need to pray and watch out for each other, holding each other up in prayer.
I will be doing that for you, you are such a blessed woman and warrior for God.

Hi JONI, just learnt about you and the wonderful things God is doing through you. I wish you speedy recovery and good health so you can continue in this good work. Do know that God is still there even if He does not seem to make sense. He loves you now more than ever before. May He help you to trust Him even when you can not track Him.Lots of love!

Hi dearie, here are few words to encourage you : Jesus is the best friend to have,He will lift you when you fall and hear you when you call. Do cast on Him all your fears, tears and cares. He has promised He will never leave you nor forsake you. Count on Hos love and youll find it TRUE and REAL!.I love you but God loves you more than you can comprehend!

Dear Joni,
I am an admirer of you.Your suffering has not stopped yet.An even
greater suffering you have to face.Your suffering has brought toge-
ther many people united to pray for you.If one member of the body of
Christ suffers, the whole body is suffering. You also are in my
prayers.

Greetings from the Netherlands!
Mr San Tjoa
