Thomas Kinkade Arrested for Suspected DUI
One of the painter's firms filed for bankruptcy earlier this month.
Artist Thomas Kinkade spent a night in jail after being arrested Friday in California on suspicion of drunken driving.
The Monterey County Herald reports that Kinkade, 52, was booked into the Monterey County Jail Friday night and was released Saturday after posting bail.
The arresting officers described Kinkade as polite and cooperative. Monterey County prosecutors were awaiting a police report Monday to decide if criminal charges will be filed against him.
Kinkade's website describes him as the most-collected living American artist. He is famous for his use of light in paintings of cottages, lighthouses, and landscapes.
The Thomas Kinkade Co. said in a statement it was reviewing the allegation, according to the Associated Press.
Kinkade's company owes millions of dollars to art gallery owners who won fraud claims, the Sacramento Bee reports.
One of Kinkade's firms filed for bankruptcy protection from the gallery owners and creditors earlier this month.
Christianity Today articles on the artist include "Gallery of Accusations," "Darkness Looms for 'Painter of Light,'" and "The Kinkade Crusade."
Comments
This is nothing new there have been other stories circulating about Kinkade acting unruly while under the influence of alcohol. There's no doubt that he must deal with a very real problem.

Proverbs 11: 13 reads: A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.
If Thomas Kinkade was arrested and he claims to be a born again Christian, his stepping out of the obedience of Christ in his personal life is already being made a spectacle through the press that is not paid for by Christians and is viewed by very many people.
Who of us is better than Thomas Kincade? Remember what Jesus said about casting the first stone at the harlot, and about he who sins much is forgiven much and he who has sinned less has been forgiven for less, but both are equally washed in the blood of Jesus Christ if they turn from their sins and turn to Jesus. We do not know the reason for the situation that led to this man's fall. I believe it may have been riches. It doesn't matter. It is not for us to delve into this man's past and invest time in his sins/crimes/troubles. Are we so sick that we are looking at people who have failed in front of people instead of spending our time trying to reach others for Christ. The world can look at articles like this as see that we even attack our own families. Is there a plea to this man to turn to Jesus for comfort and redemption from his problems? Is there even one request for prayers for this man and to believe that by God's grace we are not in the same place? God forbid that we trash another person's reputation even if it is true.

Too bad about the arrest and publicity. Let one without sin cast the first stone. But honestly, kitschy art. I just wish that the many Christian artists who are more talented, more challenging, and worthy of seeing and collecting, had half the appreciative following that this guy has enjoyed. As art, it's right up there with Precious Moments figurines. Sorry, but that's true truth.

Truly..the Associated Press has clearly picked on an incident that occurred with a Christian. How grand for them, truly pointing out Mr. Kinkade's problems, and that he is human. Reality check. Drunk Driving is nothing to crow about. I'm sure Thomas was quite courteous in lieu of this situation. He was not belligerent or out of control. That was clearly stated. Praise God. Financial crisis will
sometimes cause any to provocation. The financial woes he has encountered may have led to mayhem. It is fair to determine--he needs Celebrate Recovery ( a form of A.A. with a helping tablespoon of Jesus in it); he needs a strong cup of coffee & he needs cash.
Let us be kind--we all have our shortcomings..don't we? I know I do..don't you?

I think to most of America Thomas Kinkade is known for his art, not for being a Christian. I had no idea he was a Christian. Reading the comments under this article is the first time I'd ever heard that.

Thomas Kinkade - Formerly the "Painter of Light", henceforth known as the "Drinker of Lite (beer)". Oh well.
"Who of us is better than Thomas Kincade?" In God's eyes, none of us. But on the highway, EVERYONE who refrains from driving drunk is 'better' than Thomas Kinkade, because we're not unnecessarily risking the lives of innocent people. As Mr. Kinkade did.
"Let one without sin cast the first stone." I'm not casting stones. I don't sit in judgement over Mr. Kinkade; state law will do that nicely, thank you. But by all means, let anyone without a DUI record cast aspersions.
"Financial crisis will sometimes cause any to provocation." Kinkade wasn't arrested for sinful behavior or yielding to temptation. He was arrested for choosing to endanger others' lives by driving drunk. Period. I can understand temptation and sin; but laws against drunk driving are there to protect the innocent. So let's not deflect a discussion of his apparent violation of the law and his disregard for the safetly of others toward a discussion of his common humanity. They are two different things. Whatever else you think he may need--Christian-brand AA, coffee, cash--what he really needs is to not drive while drunk.

Agreed sir, agreed.
Most artists are expected to have eccentric, messy lives. But prim and proper artists who paint victorian houses with lots of light and have it sold in Christian bookstores? They're expected to be prim and proper. I know how awful that sounds; but I'll take the gritty artist who openly struggles over their faith over the kitsch artist who gets caught DUI.

Wow!! Maybe some of the 'Christians' on this blog need to read some books by Dave Burchett. "When Bad Christians Happen to Good People" comes to mind. Yes, we have LAWS to protect us from drunk drivers; in fact, we have LAWS to protect us from being SLANDERED by people who think they have all the answers! We all have a RIGHT to be judged by a "jury of their peers" -- maybe we've forgotten that in our haste to point fingers at someone who is hurting (whether he did this or not, he obviously is in a place where he -- and his family -- could use our prayers -- not our piety).
BTW, in an effort to maintain credibility, let me just clarify that I've never had a DUI; I don't have a problem with alcohol or substances, but I DO have a problem with holier-than-thou Christians, who give our Lord Himself a bad name!). nbelievable!!
I suggest that we ALL get on our knees and remember that Christ's blood was shed as a "complete remission for all our sins!" Wow -- I'm really just shocked, disappointed, and disgusted frankly, and Jesus used MUCH harsher terms for the Pharisees of His day.

This article on Kinkade seems more like something you would read on a gossip magazine. Did I accidentally go to a gossip magazine? No, it's CT! Wow.
I understand that it is a problem that if he professes that he is a Christian, that he gets caught with DUI. However, this article had the tone of gossip. On the other hand, Jennifer Knap comes out confessing to a gay lifestyle and she gets an interview and a CD review!!! Why on earth would a Christian magazine review a CD of an artist who professes to live a lesbian life! Only a liberal one that seems to be stirring away from Biblical values.

Our "media" is becoming increasingly focused on celebrities, gossip, and the garbage in people's lives. Wow! Did you hear what so-and-so was arrested for the other day? Hey, did you see what that airhead actress said on that YouTube video today? Tsk Tsk, those poor celebrities, must be sad to be marrying and divorcing so frequently. Oh no, another mug shot, another perp walk, another bad example of celebrities gone bad.
I understand that CT Today.com and the magazine is basically reporting what is going on in Christendom. However, I kind of wonder what some of our lives would be like if the media, and those who comsume media, didn't obsess so much over other's people's dirt. It has gotten so bad that people here in the U.S. of A are angry and obsessed with getting their opinion know about the parenting choices of the Australian parents of that teenage woman who tried to sail into the record books. My gosh people! They are tens of thousands of miles away! It is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!!!
It SEEMS like most of the time I go to my Yahoo email, the headline story is either the latest hairstyle so-and-so is sporting, what that celebrity was caught doing while the camera's were rolling, or what the internet is all abuzz about today. NOBODY CARES!!! Everybody is a critic when it is easy to post comments on the web (including me).

Kincade "sinned". So did every other Christian whether they were in church last Sunday or not. Sadly, many churches, rather than being a well known refuge of support for struggling Christians, is a "masked ball", where we put on our Sunday finery, our bright shiny "praise the Lord, Amen brother" faces, and sit there seldom conscious of God looking upon our hearts, whilst we have our pew mates completely fooled. How honest and refreshing would be a congregation where when you walk in the door, the first thing you say is: HI, MY NAME IS XXX and MY SIN OF CHOICE IS.........."

It's only suspicion.Let law take it own course of action.

So what. I'm a Christian, just like Kinkade is, and I'm not judging him. So he most likely went out to a nice dinner, had some wine, and ended up over the .08 limit, not knowing it. Oh well. He's not perfect; no one is. And I have his "Village Lighthouse" painting. I LOVE it! He is my fave! Always will be.
