Rick Warren: My Eyes Were Severely Burned (Updated)

Rick Warren just tweeted: My eyes were severely burned by a toxic poison.Hospitalized Mon.Excruciating pain. Now home.Pray my sight loss is restored

Update (11 a.m. Central):

Warren was pruning a firestick plant in his yard on Monday when he got some of the sap from the plant on his hands, according to his publicist, A. Larry Ross. "He went to wipe his brow and immediately experienced excruciating pain in both eyes," Ross said. "His wife came running out, and it was so painful, he couldn’t articulate what happened."

His wife Kay called 911, and an emergency vehicle transferred him to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo where he saw an eye specialist. Warren was kept overnight and released Tuesday.

He is wearing protective contact lenses and using ointment, and doctors expect a full recovery, Ross said. Ross said that Warren did not lose his eyesight, but was unable to open his eyes. "Thankfully, he’s seeing well enough to be able to tweet," he said.

After his initial tweet, Warren tweeted: Thank you for prayers for my eyes. Another doctor visit this PM. May God use this pain for His Glory. Rom.8:28

Last year, Warren was working on a book called The Hope You Need (Zondervan), delayed it so he could write the curriculum for his church membership program. Amazon lists the release date for The Hope You Need on November 16, but Ross was unsure when it will be released.

Update (9 p.m. Central): Tonight, Warren posted his own account of the incident on Saddleback's blog. Earlier this afternoon, he tweeted: A doctor put protective contacts on my corneas as bandages during the healing. I am NOT blind. Thank you.

FYI...This has been confirmed via Tony Morgan

Alot of haters here. Thank God he will be ok to write more books ike the "Purpose Driven Life" that apparently all you need to read.

David: As a fmr resident of Cali, I can guarantee you that it's not a Republican state. Arnold was elected as a backlash against Gray Davis, and Democrat Bustamante could have easily won it, but he came across as more of the same. Anyway.

Nate: Mr. Warren really should have elaborated on his comment. Pain itself doesn't bring God glory. People overcoming pain through a meaningful relationship with God underscores our dependence on God and, in turn, glorifies God. Missionaries, righteous Gentiles under Nazi persecution, etc. have all written extensively on this topic. If you care to read further, I'd recommend Dietrich Bonhoeffer -- tough as nails. I guess the fear of losing his sight really scared Rick Warren. You can't exactly compare Bonhoeffer's experience to Rick's, but who am I to judge? Neither is an area I'd like to be spiritually tested in, get it?

Help us all to see through the eyes of Love.. bless those who curse us with overwhelming love and a change of heart..

Amazing how hateful all these people are who complain about Rick Warren being hateful.

Wow, there are a lot of haters here. No matter who you are or what seemingly good or evil you stand for, everyone needs compassion - even you... Praying for you Rick.

Prayers for Rick and all with eye injuries, vision problems and any who are suffering. May they receive an abundance of healing, comfort and peace.

Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit,
world without end,
Amen.

I do hope that GOD (the GOD there is who is in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit) does use
this accident for His glory! I wonder any of you legalists would like to commented about like you have on this thread? We should ALWAYS pray for enemies and NEVER reproach your Maker by being excited about someone's misfortune!

Comments that are considered rude or off topic will be deleted.

Let's see...called 911...rushed to hospital...doctors worked on him...sent home like any mortal...gives thanks to God. Why not just ask God to heal right away and leave out all the trouble of using modern science. This morning I was not killed in an auto accident..thanks to God. But seriously, I am glad he is okay, but this is not a news story.

@JDK Dude, the guy is in pain and it's a Twitter post; he did not mean what you are trying to twist his words into for your own reasons. What he should have written is "May God use my response to this pain for His glory" which is likely the true sentiment intended, but not communicated in a way to avoid your gross mischaracterization.

I am thankful that Rick will be okay, especially that he will be okay, even if not healed from this injury. I am trying to understand why those who have such obvious disdain for things of the Lord are even spending time reading a Christianity Today blog. I pray it is because you are really seeking the Lord, not cursing Him.

There will always be the jokesters who try to be "cute" with their little comments. Having your eyes burnt or damaged in any way is scary. Let Rick make his comments. By the way, the majority who believes that God is three persons has forgotten to ask God. He says "the Lord is one Lord" (Deut. 6:4). This dogma is a little outdated.

Pain and suffering are reality on this earth. We either transmit it, or we allow God to transform it.

Nate - I will pray for understanding for you. The point is not to celebrate the pain or difficulty, but to know that God will teach us lessons as we endure and those lessons can then be used to help others. Most of us humans have many encounters with trouble, pain, trauma, emotional or physical or financial distress. We don't "love" the trying event - but we know that we can use our experience to help someone else somewhere down the line. Why be selfish and petulant when you, with God's help, can turn any situation to good? Roses have thorns, but they're still beautiful and make people happy.

He may very well have meant just what he said, "May God use this pain for His Glory. Rom.8:28"

The experience of redemptive suffering is a foundational part of Christianity. We worship a Savior who suffered for us and we offer our suffering as we take up our cross as well.

why is he asking for people to pray that his sight loss is restored when it states that his sight was NOT lost.

I am glad that a full recovery is expected.
I had a scare once when removing an Oleander plant from my garden - nothing like Rick went through.

Wish the best for Rick. Perhaps he has learned from the experience. Know your plants! Don't rub your eyes after cutting habanero peppers. And so forth.

BTW..It is so easy these days to make snide, little comments to articles like this while hiding behind the wall of anonymity. If sites like this would only provide access if you made public your full name, address. email address and phone number matters would be very much different.

You are loved Pastor Rick and I pray God's best blessings upon you.

Nate,

"Pain brings glory to God... sickening."

You seem to have overlooked the most glorious pain ever endured to the glory of God... Jesus Christ crucified. "You see, at just the right time when we were still powerless (spiritually dead), Christ died for the ungodly (everyone)... But God demonstrates his own love for us in THIS: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Pick up a bible and read Romans 5 when you get a chance. There is nothing sickening about the love of God who, by offering up his own son, reconciles a broken sinner like me to Himself... The perfect, and most loving Father.

What IS sickening is our passive response to such a wonderful Savior who has given everything on the cross, enduring its shame, to the Glory of God. Nate, without that terrible pain, there would have been no resurrection... therefore, no grace, no forgiveness, no freedom from sin's power and shame, no hope for sinners like me. I thank God for that unbelievable pain.

The peasants don't rejoice at this sort of news, but the bigots sure do.

I had a huge "Fire stick" plant in my yard that was easy to maintain and added some color. I was pruning to control size and wiped my hand across my forehead. Minutes after both eyes were turning red and the burning pain was intense. My stay in emergency was about five hours and later some visits to eye specialists was called for. My eye sight was not affected by this incident. I don't know why some people have used this same incident with Warren to hurt or cause him pain. I am sure that if he had known of my painful trip to the hospital he would have prayed for me.
In cases like this if you don't have something good to say, keep quiet!

@Onewhosees I am sure that your next post will include your full name, email, street address and phone number so that we can contact you and have you enlighten us. Don't be timid. No URLs please unless they allow us to contact you directly.

BTW. I am not by no means a follower of Rick Warren and have no copy of the PDL in my library. I have strong disagreements with him but he is not a heretic. But I wish him speedy recovery.

As a Christian, I wish the best for Mr. Warren and hope he makes a full recovery.

But I can't help but wonder if this is punishment for Rick bowing before the anti-christ Obama. Search your soul for the answer Mr. Warren.

I wish you well.

Hey Gaul or piano lady (I can't tell who posted it), how do you explain Genesis 1:26, "Let US make man in OUR image, according to OUR likeness...". Or John 1:1 and John 1:14, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God...And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us..."

What we all need is a Jesus driven life... Praying for you and your eyesight...God Bless...

To the Administrators at CT: Thank you for removing the very offensive remark. It added insult to injury and wasn't needed.

Honestly, some of you people have overdosed on your Christianity. God is not going to "use this pain for His Glory"! Rick Warren is not Jesus Christ! You may believe that Jesus' suffering saved men from the consequences of sin, but that doesn't mean that there's anything supernatural about sticking your thumb in your eye and burning yourself with toxic sap. That's just carelessness, not divine intervention. NOT EVERYTHING THAT OCCURS IN YOUR LIFE IS PART OF SOME HUGELY IMPORTANT DIVINE PLAN!

And no, I am not a Christian hater. On the contrary, people who try to make every little aspect of life a big spiritual event are demeaning their own religion. You can have faith without letting all of your brains and common sense dribble out.

That's why I don't garden

Please@! For whatever was done to you. God is watching over you. You have important work.
