Donald Bloesch, UCC Evangelical, Died Tuesday
The United Church of Christ loses a prominent conservative voice.
Donald G. Bloesch, a prominent evangelical scholar in the United Church of Christ (UCC) and an advisory editor at Christianity Today, died on Tuesday in Dubuque, Iowa.
Bloesch, who was professor emeritus at the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary, was well known as a voice of renewal in the United Church of Christ.
“He gave us not only an understanding of the deep perversity in the mainline church, but theological skills to be effective witnesses in a difficult time,” said David Runnion-Bareford, executive director of the Biblical Witness Fellowship, a spiritual renewal group within the UCC. “It is ironic that this evangelical was the most widely read and respected UCC theologian of his generation.”
More information will be added as it becomes available.

Like Clark Pinnock, Bloesch will be remembered as one of the great minds within Evangelicalism. God's blessing and support to friends and family as they deal with his death.

Dr. Bloesch was a scholar who exercised wisdom with knowledge. I am grateful for the way he loved the Lord Jesus and honored him well as the Lord of the Church. In the few times we talked in his office, I always walked away, not just with clarity, but with a sense of charity. God's faithful comfort to his closest family and friends.

Dr. Bloesch was an amazing Godly man, who instilled in me a passion for theology, for the evangelical and ecumenical church and who mentored me, encouraged me, prayed for me and I will miss him deeply.

Donald Bloesch was not only a great orthodox evangelical thinker but a man who loved Christ more than his ideas and Christian unity more than sectarian contentions. I was privileged to learn from him from his writings and from his loving friendship. I count him one of my most prized mentors in the faith. I believe Donald Bloesch will still be read and appreciated when more popular writers of our time will be long forgotten a generation from now. I thus believe he will be remembered in the future as one of the finest Christian theologians of our generation. I will miss him profoundly. I thank God for Donald and urge friends to pray for his dear wife Brenda who will miss him very deeply.

When I was a theological student I started reading Bloesch's "Essentials of Evangelical Theology." I wrote him a note of thanks and asked a few questions. He kindly responded and that response developed into a friendship that has lasted for years. What a blessing he has been in my life as a pastor-theologian. He and Brenda were such a great team and were so kind to extend their friendship over the years. He loved Christ, his Word, and the Church in all its expressions. May he rest in Christ's eternal peace. Prayers for Brenda.

I was encouraged by Donald Bloesch in my pilgrimage as younger scholar as our paths crossed from time to time. A few years ago I was deeply moved as he and his wife took time to attend a lecture that I was invited to give at Emmaus Bible College, not far from where they live. I am sure that he learned nothing that he did did not already know as a result of his presence at my lecture, but once again I was heartened by the generosity and warmth of his spirit. Donald Bloesch has been a major influence in the renewal of evangelical theology in our time and, though his writings, I am sure that he will be a continued influence for many years to come.

I was honored to have Dr.Bloesch to be my academic and spiritual mentor. He was most helpful as my Ph.D.thesis advisor. Our friendship grew when I provided harmony for many of the songs he composed. I have learned a great deal from him in upholding orthodox tradition while appreciating various theological persuasions down through the ages. For Bloeasch, Christ was the center of his theology and his life. Dr. and Mrs.Bloeash's love for God and students have left a deep impact in my own life. May God's comfort and peace fill the heart of Brenda Bloesch his dear wife.

Donald Bloesch was a deeply loyal friend in Christ. He championed my first book to an editor and it was published as a result. He would sit in services where I pastored with Brenda, his wife. He would take notes during my preaching and after the service ask for the reference information. Don was deeply loyal as a friend and quietly courageous toward his evangelical friends inside the UCC renewal movement.

Not many can claim the distinction of being the Pastor of Donald Bloesch. In 1972 I matriculated at the U of Dubuque Seminary and as a student was called to the pulpit of Harmony UCC at Zwingle, IA. One day Dr. Bloesch asked me to stop by his office. He wanted to inform me that he had moved his letter of membership from Maquoketa UCC to Harmony. I inquired to what did I owe this honor? "Because you preach the Word." I was his pastor, he became my teacher, mentor and friend. My first book, "The Ultimate Evidence" was dedicated to his honor. This man had a tremendous influence on my life and ministry.
