What Is Gleanings?

At Christianity Today, we’re constantly tracking important developments in the church and the world. Often we use our network of reporters around the world (and for that, visit our main site). But we also monitor other news outlets, bloggers, newsmakers’ social media feeds, and countless other information streams. Gleanings compiles the most urgent and interesting items we’ve found, explains why you need to know about them, and gives you the background you need to understand them. It’s our snapshot of what God is doing in the world, hour by hour.

Disgruntled Rock Stars Cite Faith as a Reason for Leaving Band

Two ex-Paramore members blogged about theological disagreements that they say contributed to their departure.

When musicians Josh and Zac Farro posted their side of the story that led to their departure from the platinum-selling pop-punk band Paramore, they said their decision came in part from a deepening faith divide in the group.

"We were all growing further apart," read the statement the brothers released late last week. "Suddenly the band had split into two sides."

Though not officially a Christian band and never signed with a Christian label, members of Tennessee-based Paramore have often talked about their personal beliefs. They even visited Willow Creek Community Church in 2008 for a brief concert and Q&A session.

"Our faith is very important to us," Josh Farro told the BBC in 2008. "It's obviously going to come out in our music because if someone believes something then their worldview is going to come out in anything they do. But we're not out here to preach to kids, we're out here because we love music."

In 2007, lead singer Hayley Williams agonized in a LiveJournal post about lyrics she wrote which she said used God's name "in vain."

"I'm ashamed to say that, although I'm a believer in Jesus Christ and I claim him as my God, when I wrote those lyrics I wasn't addressing him," Williams wrote. "I might have led some of y'all to believe that I take my saviour lightly, and I don't."

But the Farro brothers say that when they sat down to put together their most recent album, Brand New Eyes, Williams had changed.

"Hayley presented lyrics to us that were really negative and we didn’t agree with. For example, 'the truth never set me free,' which contradicts what the Bible says in John 8:32." ("Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.")

"The truth never set me free / so I did it myself," Williams sings in the Brand New Eyes song "Careful."

The brothers Farro also quoted Amos 3:3 from the New Living Translation: “Can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction?”

Josh Farro seemed content with spiritual message of Brand New Eyes in a 2009 Houston Chronicle interview, but now the brothers are claiming that lead singer Williams' influence over the band forced them to "roll over and let it go."

"We fought her about how her lyrics misrepresented our band and what we stood for, but in the end she got her way," they wrote.

As the former bandmates exchange blog posts and videos, Zac Farro has already joined a new band called Tunnel.

Ever since BNE, Hayley has been really tense.

In her interviews, during her shows, and even on her twitter & tumblr.

Plus the language she quotes on tumblr is kinda offensive (f-words and stuff). Not that she writes them herself, but she quotes these people and seems A-OK with it.

She never use to be like this. :(

Prayers for them all and hope that God guides Hayley towards making the right decision.

Personally I think Paramore should split now before they change worse.

I doubt that she isn't a Christian. She's said in the last week that her faith in Christ is the only thing that has never failed her, and even got a tattoo (some are against tattoos, some aren't) of a cross to further emphasize her faith. On her thank you's for Brand New Eyes, she's the only member of Paramore to open with (or even include) a Bible verse. It is of my opinion that Josh is only upset because things didn't turn out the way he wanted them to, and now he's trying to make Hayley look as negative as possible, even to the point that he's attacking her faith. Well "he who is without sin cast the first stone."

Man what is it with people constantly making reference to Jesus/ or a religous belief system. Once again religion has caused another social divide...can't say thats the first time thats ever happened!

I have been a massive supporter of Paramore since I saw their first show in the UK as I really enjoy their music. I was however disappointed at the blatant ideolisation of 'god' at the Reading Festival gig, unlike their other shows.

As an agnostic myself (although I studied Religious Studies at uni) it is my personal belief that if taken the wrong way faith can do more harm than good. This being a perfect example.

Kinda sad when they really are my favourite band, its not gunna be the same without the guys.

Sounds like they are still growing in their faith. I'm sure that after further growth and practice of their faith and music, they will come to some agreement. But this will depend on how far they take in their faith, biblical teachings and historical view and practice of Christianity. If they both reach a comfort zone in their faith which allows for the upkeep of discord, then they will simply stay separate. If they continue into the personal transformation into what Christ desires, they will eventually meet with peace with each other. This of course takes sacrifice and a willingness to accept that certain personal practices that are not according to Christian values be replaced with those that are.

Christian rock group is an oxymoron..they're all such posers and phonies..If you really want to hear a band whose songs are from the heart and make you think of God or at least see a struggling soul judging himself listen to Social Distortion or Johnny Cash..at least you know where they're coming from and where they want to go.I'd rather listen to the lyrics of flawed people who are in the process of redemption than the hand swaying mushy Jesus groups or the hipocritical Punk pop Christian bands..the problem with Paramore is that it was becomming to hard to fake it..you can't have the best of both worlds..either ditch the fake images or join a church choir.

Andrew Ridgeley said the same thing when Wham broke up.

Innocence Mission is the only musical group of faith that I listen to. Being a Christian in a band does not require you to proselytize nor does it mean you cannot write or perform songs of a non religious nature. If your beliefs are so strong that you feel a co-writer does not contribute something you can believe in, then you can either compromise or follow your heart. Good luck to them.
