At Christianity Today, we’re constantly tracking important developments in the church and the world. Often we use our network of reporters around the world (and for that, visit our main site). But we also monitor other news outlets, bloggers, newsmakers’ social media feeds, and countless other information streams. Gleanings compiles the most urgent and interesting items we’ve found, explains why you need to know about them, and gives you the background you need to understand them. It’s our snapshot of what God is doing in the world, hour by hour.

Angel Food Ministries Shuts Down (Updated)

Update: More details on AFM's closure can be found here.

Angel Food Ministries, which provided boxes of discounted food to hundreds of thousands of struggling families via churches in 35 states, has announced it is shutting down for good. Earlier this month, the family-run, multi-million-dollar ministry had announced a temporary suspension of service amid significant staff layoffs.

CT covered Angel Food's financial and legal woes and the perils of family-run mega-ministries back in 2009.

This is such a shame - I've always respected and liked their methods of helping people and have pointed many people to their ministry.

Does anyone know of a similar program elsewhere? I really counted on this every month. I would take the basic box, check the price of items at our local store and always saved quite a bit even when compared to generic items at my local store. I really miss it!

This is really sad. A church about 45 minutes from us had a wealthy congregant leave a large sum of money to supplement the costs of Angel Food for a while. The prices averaged about 40% off. My wife and I would gather orders from friends, coworkers, and ministry partners and put them in then go pick them all up at once ourselves with my truck to bring back to distribute instead of a whole bunch of people each driving there. They were good bargains! Several donation based food banks in our area have been closing, as well, such as Gleaners.

Good Food for Less offers a similar service. I know several local groups switched to them after the Angel Food issues became apparent.
