Pat Robertson's Adoption Remarks "Of The Devil," Says SBC's Russell Moore (Updated)

Southern Baptist leader defends international adoption from 700 Club comments.

Editor's note: This post has been updated with a press release from Pat Robertson.

It's not unusual for comments by Pat Robertson to provoke heated reactions. But this time, what's unusual is the subject matter: adoption.

Robertson recently expressed affirmation on The 700 Club for men who don't want to date women who have children adopted from foreign countries, notes Associated Baptist Press. His comments -- including, "You don’t have to take on somebody else’s problems" -- provoked a strong rebuke from Russell Moore, a Southern Baptist Theological Seminary dean who has become a prominent advocate for adoption.

"This is not just a statement we ought to disagree with," wrote Moore on his blog. "This is of the devil."

Moore continues:

The issue here isn’t just that Robertson is, with cruel and callous language, dismissing the Christian mandate to care for the widows and orphans in their distress. The issue is that his disregard is part of a larger worldview. The prosperity and power gospel Robertson has preached fits perfectly well with the kind of counsel he’s giving in recent years. Give China a pass on their murderous policies; we’ve got business interests there. Divorce your weak wife; she can’t do anything for you anymore. Those adopted kids might have brain damage; they’re “weird.” What matters is health and wealth and power. But that’s not the gospel of Jesus Christ. For too long, we’ve let our leaders replace the cross with an Asherah pole. Enough is enough.

Robertson clarified his position on Friday afternoon. Full text is below.

CT has extensive coverage of the surging adoption movement among evangelicals, and has regularly featured commentary from Russell Moore.

The following statement is from Pat Robertson, host of The 700 Club:

“Today, on live television, I misstated my heartfelt dedication and commitment to helping orphans. For decades, I have supported adoption, and have helped tens of thousands of children worldwide.

I wanted to say, but it didn’t come out the way I intended, that adoption is not for everyone.

The mother of three adopted children, who wrote in about her boyfriend’s issue with her children, did a wonderful, unselfish act to adopt and I respect her immensely. Yet, adoption might not be a fit for her boyfriend. If that is the case, she needs to find someone who better shares her passion for adoption.

Adoptive parents are taking on enormous responsibility, both emotionally and financially. Quite frankly, they need as much disclosure as possible about the child’s background and health to assure the best fit and be prepared.

In answering the letter writer, this is what I meant to say. If any doubt remains, I ask you to please look at what I’ve done over the years to help orphans.”

PAT ROBERTSON
HOST, THE 700 CLUB

Comments

You can always count on Dr. Moore to graciously and yet firmly take on those who disgrace the name of Christ. The problem wasn't so much the beginning of Robert's statements (though they too can be seen as calloused and without understanding). Surely it is the choice of a man to further a relationship or not if he doesn't think he is up for the challenge of three adopted children. What was most "surprising" was remarks he continued to make about the unnecessary risk of bringing a child who has "problems" into a supposedly problem free family. It was a terrible reflection of a heart that is far from that of the Father's who loves to take in the most damaged of souls and make them children of a Holy and Righteous God.

I am an adoptee, and when I saw Pat Robertson's comments I wept out of anger and disgust. Christ said "Let the children come unto me." Pat Robertson's apology sounds very canned and very fake. At the end of his broadcast he said (paraphrased) "We have to go now, I'm in trouble". I think we saw the TRUE Pat Robertson in the original comments. It made me sad to be a Christian, and hurt my soul as an adoptee.

Ms Ryder is pretty quick to judge. Just because Robertson voiced a very human emotion is no cause to demonize him. Adoptee or no, she has no more right to self-righteously condemn than Robertson does to give wrong advice. But she does not seem to realize that. I guess she has a sck full of stones. Everyone today loves "outrage." I now will weep. Brother. Maybe a more Christian response would be... none?

Dear Joe: She isn't judging. She is expressing her sadness and frustration with several of his recent comments that explicitly fly in the face of Christ and his followers. You, however, are judging her. Are you really sure you want to suggest that no response is truly Christian? Tell that to Russell Moore and many other Christian leaders and followers who are upset by his continued anti-Christian teachings of late.

I was adopted in Germany at 4 and one half months old. I am currently 49 and diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. My younger brother was also adopted and later died of Muscular Dystrophy. But I can promise you that both of us were loved and cared for by our parents in a such a way as to shame Robertson's comments. I've have vehemently wished for Robertson to leave the airwaves for a number of years. But now, I demand it.

As a survivor of childhood incestuous sexual abuse and as a loving niece to TWO adopted people (who were both from the same town as their adoptive parents), one of whom was SEVERELY physically abused and carries the physical deformities in the form of severe cerebral palsy as a result of that abuse and the other was later diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder, I disagree with Robertson's statement that we should not adopt children from foreign countries.

Robertson's remarks that because I was sexually abused, or that because my adopted aunt and uncle have what he may perceive as disabilities makes us weird is incredibly insulting.

I am a grown woman who graduated post-secondary with a 3.99 GPA, with a successful financial services business, who also helped my husband start a rapidly growing company of his own. I also have 4 children, two of whom are my stepdaughters and who I raised as my own. Both of them have minor learning disabilities, which are considered brain dysfunctions. I have served my church as a Eucharistic minister, and currently sing with my local orchestra.

My adopted aunt has grown into a strong woman with a beautiful daughter of her own and a fantastic husband who brought 3 of his sons into their marriage, and she has managed her ODD quite well.

My adopted uncle is maimed for life and has only limited use of one arm. He will never walk. His speech is difficult to understand. He is the funniest man I've ever met, he always has a clever punchline.

I may be weird, but my life, the lives of my adopted aunt and uncle, and the lives of thousands of orphaned and displaced children around the world are no less valuable than the lives of any child raised by their biological parents, and those who do adopt these children and pour their hearts and souls into them are as godly as the saints!

It is now time to STOP stigmatizing the victims of abuse.

Jinni and Beth,
I agree with you fully. Joe is completely wrong on this matter. Joe, your reasoning lacks substance and has no foundation in biblical principle. I read this quote a while ago, "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." (Edmund Burke). I am sure Joe Paterno, while he was still alive wished he had spoken up and done more. Look at how much damaged was done because of the silence of a few. When Peter, thinking that he was expressing support for Jesus by not wanting him to go to the cross, Jesus rejected his words and rebuked the true source behind them saying "Get the behind me Satan" Jesus didn't hate Peter. But what Peter was saying and expressing was completely of the devil and needed to be identified as such. Also in Galatians 2:11, Paul rebuked Peter openly for his Hypocrisy.
Pat Robertson was completely wrong and needed to be called out publicly for this, because that type of thinking can do great damage to many and to name of the Lord. Even unsaved people are shocked by his callous unholy view. The very fact that we are Christians is because we were ADOPTED into the family of God and washed by the blood of Jesus. GOD LOVED US while we were still wretched, vile, warped, brain damaged, full of sin and wickedness, hateful, confused, God hating, Abused by the world and the devil, perverted, Full of sinful pride, Greedy of gain, Self-Absorbed, unthankful, ungrateful, unholy, rejected by family, “friends” and the World. And I can go on for many more paragraphs. But I think you get the picture.
This is what our loving God has decided to do for us. He still puts up with our warped, retarded way even though we hurt him daily. An Adoption is one of the most perfect examples of our relationship with God and one of the greatest examples of the gospel message.
What Pat probably should have told the woman is that “ Maybe your Fiancé is not the one for you, but let us pray and trust God to give guidance in the situation” But our problem is ( and I say “Our problem”) we too often think we have to have the answers to every situations “immediately”, and not say like King Jehoshaphat in Chronicle 20:12 when confronted with a big problem cried out to the lord in humility and said“….neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee.
What happened to bearing one another’s burdens, caring for the sick, the orphans, the fatherless, the widows, the weak? Jinni, you are loved. You are whole, you are normal.

How many of us would pass the test day after day in the spotlight of public opinion? Look at Pat's work over all these years and the countless people who have benefited from his work and leave the "heart" judgements to G-d Who alone knows the truth.

Pat Robertson was completely correct. Now, that's not to say that he doesn't often says some strange things. However, he's getting old and some last vestiges of truth and reality sometimes come to the fore. I'm pretty sure Jesus wasn't advocating adopting children from other countries and cultures. He was speaking in the context of his own culture regarding widows and orphans. Within the last quarter century, not unaffected by certain celebrities adopting exotic children and "wearing" them as fashion accessories, the gullible and highly influenceable evangelicals have decided that they'd like to get them some warm do-gooder feelings too. We'll just ignore the orphans in our own country because they're just a little too old and we need to bond with an infant and we'll feel all warm and fuzzy if we get an African or a Thai and maybe we'll be just like Madonna and Angelina Jolie! Yay! And of course, we'll "save" them from their poverty! Why don't we just import the whole population of all such countries? Sounds good to me!

We worked in a Special Needs orphanagei for years and we love those precious children dearly and want them to be adopted. With that said, Pat is just old and needs to probably retire at least from taking the phone calls and giving opinions that are not thought out before hand. This does not make him evil, and if you do look at his ministry, it has often been to orphans. After watching the video, I understand more of what he meant to say, but sad he didn't come across that way. How often do we all say things that are either misunderstood or we say them wrong and regret it later. And often when people are getting older, they tend to just ramble, so instead of not supporting the worldwide and respected ministry (which is much more than Pat Robertson), We should write to CBN and ask for him to retire before he looses even more credibility for this ministry. We need to pray for Pat and for the wonderful people who adopt all over the world. It is a special calling to adopt and no one should take it lightly. I believe this is what Pat really wanted to say. Maybe these men were not the right people to take on this great responsibility and if they weren't, I am sure this woman would not want him to be her precious kid's father. I am sad to see Christians attacking Christians. We have enough people attacking us daily. Yes, we should call him on the carpet for sure, but do we need to be name calling and showing so much anger. Really, what would Jesus have done?

DiverCity, your response was about as heartless as Pat's and it makes me sick. 'Jesus wouldn't advocate for adoption from other cultures' What??? the last time I checked, God made every human being, from every country, from every nation. These children are ALL his children. Look at the Good Samaritan - the whole basis was to help those who may not be like us just because they need help. As an adoptive mom of an African child, she is NOT a fashion accessory but my daughter. God clearly, emphatically, called us to adopt her and provided for the vast amount of money every step of the way. Her story and our adoption has brought countless closer to Him. My own husband was an 'orphan from our own country' and he agreed - he always had food, clothing, medical care here in the US. My daughter was dying when she was put in an orphanage. Children die daily on the streets without parents. Both children were worthly of adoption - it is just where God calls their parents from, his white skin did not make him more worthy or his US identification. 'Christians' like you and Pat give the real followers of Christ an awful name. It's no wonder so many reject Christ if they look to today's so called as examples!

Jesus said "Go and make disciples of all nations." We should not limit ourselves to our own country or put a hierarchy on our own country. We are ALL God's children. God sees no borders and neither should we. As far as your comments in regards of people adopting internationally for "warm do-gooder feelings", I think you need to get to know people who have adopted internationally before you make an assumption like this one. They are some of the most selfless people in the world. If there were more people in the world who were true followers of Christ, following the commands of God, there wouldn't be 150 million orphans around the world, and there certainly wouldn't be people condemning those who choose to love them. Where is your compassion?

I feel that age is a factor here. He doesn't seem to be thinking right. After being around my 94 1/2 year old mother, she at times says things I would never have expected. Although it is wrong and frustrating, the answer is to get him retired and off the air...hopefully his family will do this before the damage is much worse! He has done many charitable things in his lifetime...that was then and this is now.

Oh my! How we love "Band wagons".....Have each one of us said our thoughts out loud ,"perfectly"...If so,Christ alone controls your tongue each second! Are we,as Christians not doing what we condemn others for?READING MINDS..I think Pat made himself very clear in his statement ...Not everyone is called to parent orphans. This DOES NOT mean he is against adopting children from other countries...He clearly says,"Dont judge the men who are not called to father adoptive children from other countries...I guess my question to every Christian is,"Have you adopted a foreign orphan ?" If your answer is no,am I correct in saying you are not doing what God says to do and you are wrong and a heartless person.....Sounds a little "judgemental? Oh how we forget that God puts different things on each of our hearts for HIS PURPOSES TO BE FULFILLED....May we all be as He calls us to be...."Looking beyond the band wagon of criticism and instead to seeking understanding of each others hearts... I praise God He chooses to give others the hearts He does to father the fatherless and I praise others that give in order that these may have the opportunity to fulfill their purpose of adpoting...

Pat Robertson needs to retire and go home. I'm sick and tired of his anti-Christian stances on everything from the earthquake in Haiti in 2010 to foreign adoptions.

We are all God's children. In Christ, there is no east or west, male or female, bond nor free, Jew nor Greek.

I can adopt a child from anywhere in the world and he/she will be God's child, just as I am God's child.

Perhaps Pat's racism blinds him to the fact that all humanity was made of one blood. Please go home Pat. Just tired of you now. You put Christians in a very bad light and have become a source of mockery.

Care for the widow and the orphan has been encouraged by Jesus himself - what I fear is a situation that allows "gay" parents to adopt. This is an abomination.

Just because we do not know a child's full medical history does not mean that we should not take them into our home. We are not guaranteed a "perfect" or even healthy child biologically. God calls us to love Him and to love others.

To many, it seems fine to give money to the needy and orphans, but we apparently should not give of our lives to raise them. Too much of an inconvenience I guess.

I am very grateful that Jesus does not consider me too much of an inconvenience to sacrifice His life.

Jessulyn Huttu,
In this case I don't think it was Pat Robertson that made Christianity look bad and it wasn't the first time.

Pat's comments made me very sad. I adopted a wonderful girl from Bulgaria who is now 13 and is God's greatest gift to me and my husband. Not all people are lucky enough to be blessed with children which is something that Pat did not seem to remember. You can have a biological child that can give you a lot of problems. There are no guarantees with any children adopted for biological but if you don't take a chance you might never find out the happiness either. What really upset me is his remarks might make some people fear to adopt then these beautiful poor little children will not get adopted. I don't think adoption is for everyone but I wish people if they feel negative about it just keep it to themselves. We should all think how we would feel if we never had a family to love us. God bless

My Father took on problems when He adopted me. Ephesians 1
The larger problem to me is that Christians don't know their Scripture - they are not discerning. So they throw their money at these false teachers thereby permitting them to remain on television. I agree that they have been lifting up an Asherah pole instead of the Cross of Christ.

The retail mantra - if they'll buy it, we'll supply it.

I have heard many comments that Robertson makes in his program the 700 club and am used to his harsh comments, he is not easy to take specially when he supposedly is speaking as a follower of a Christ who when he had a chance called the priests of his time a bunch of vipers... Robertson fits Right in!!!

Pat's comments about adoption is not the first time he's had foot in mouth diseise! I think he should have retired years ago, but i don't think he will. He'll just keep getting on the show and making those idiotic statements until the day he dies. And I don't understand how so many people can follow him! Sometimes I think that Pat is the leader of a cult!

Psalm 68 and Psalm 82 are God's excoriation to the religious community who would think that it is sufficient to ignore or dismiss orphans as someone else's problem.

God's heart says "be a father to the fatherless". Yes, Robertson has done a lot to help build orphanages. And that's good. But that's not all that We, the Christian community, are called to do! ...and what many of us take umbrage against is Robertson's comment about her (the caller in the situation) family being "the united nations...". That is Robertson's selfish judgement against her. He does not have the heart of God in mind and he does not know what God has led her to do.

Any preacher worth his salt should be calling Christian men to have the character to adopt orphans and marry widows! Yes, indeed, it's not for every man - it's for men of character! Men who believe the Gospel!

As a man who has taken that step, with a Godly wife, to adopt children - I say this to all the church: "Get some belief! Get the heart of the Father! Don't give God excuses, give God your willingness."

Let's stop pretending that Christianity is about singing songs and listening to sermons! It's about being DOERS of the word!

Judging by the comments section here, most of the church is quite ready to submit to the neo-Tower of Babel one-world government. All I see is globalist liberalism with a thin veneer of Christianity across it.

No borders. No commonsense. Just feel-good, we-are-the-world fluff designed to shame anyone who dares tell any uncomfortable truth about most anything at all.

Open the borders, let's import the world! It's our "Christian" duty, don't you see?

And where in the scriptures does it call a man to automatically date or marry a woman for any reason at all? Why should a young man, desiring sons and daughters who look like they belong to him, marry a woman with her own brood? Where in the bible does it sanction a woman to adopt children outside of marriage, anyway? Hint: nowhere.

And as for this fellow who called what Pat said, "of the devil", he should remember that the Pharisees said the same thing about Jesus.

Eric Hale, if people say you're a crackpot for 3 decades, you're a crackpot. Sadly, we have many instances of Robertson's comments to verify that his words are, "of the devil". How sad that you have to take commentary about adopting children and turn it into a political debate. I'm praying for you.

Yes, it would be lovely if all adopted children came with full disclosure and instruction booklets - and if all disabled children came with those as well - however, just because a child's full background is unknown doesn't mean they don't need a loving family. His response is as pathetic as his first statements, just because that little orphan from Haiti has no traceable relatives doesn't excuse all of humanity for not trying to find a good home for him. And someone with a show claiming it is about Christianity should do a much better job of realizing Christ never promised us a guaranteed easy life, he called us to follow him, a homeless, charity-salaried, radical rabbi who was often too much of a threat to his society's perceived safety zone (religious rules, family first, women second, rich is better, samaritan is worse, etc.).

Tower of Babel, Open-Borders, One World Government, Feel Good Liberalism, Disrespect for the Nation State, Disrespect for Racial Differences, No respect for law or common sense....This is what Christianity is today in America.

If you want to take care of Orphans go to Guatemala or Africa and live there and take care of orphans.

But see....none of you want to do that. You'd have to give up the the wealth and safety of living in a First World Country. You want to bring children with health problems, mental disorders HERE to the United States and burden the welfare/medical/education system of this country so you can feel good about yourselves.

I have known 24 year old newly-wed wives who just gave birth to their first daughters go over to Africa and adopt an African child.

That's Not Normal. A woman should bear her husband's children until she is no longer able to....and a Mother of a 1 year old Child Should Not Be Obsessed with Adopting in Africa...And you know what...her biological little girl doesn't hug her in the photos. I think we all know why. If I was her daughter, I wouldn't hug her either. She betrayed her husband and her newborn child.

I'm sick of this sickness.

Not only was Pat Robertson heartless and ignorant about the matter of adoption he also applied a warning. People should be careful, you never know what happened to them before you got them, they could have been sexually abused. Although that isnt exact words, listening to the video will clarify exactly what he said about sexual abuse. That makes him such a hypocrit. He rightfully opposes abortion, even in instances of rape. So if a women was a victim of rape and placed the child for adoption people shouldnt adopt them? Really an awful thing to say, his apology really wasnt too sincere either.

FAKE CHRISTIAN LIKE PAT ROBERTSON & REV.GRAHAM ARE THE TRUE HYPOCRITES OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH

I wonder who watches Pat Robertson of “The 700 Club” he is so hypocritical and a straight up liar and a so-call white Christian leader! Pat Robertson says GOD has told him who the next president will be -- but it's a secret. The televangelist revealed before the election that he had spent the nearly a week in prayer, asking GOD to "show me something." " The idiot said “I think He showed me the next president, but I’m not supposed to talk about that," Robertson explained. "So I’ll leave you in the dark -- probably just as well -- I think I’ll know who it will be. GOD, who obviously isn't a Democratic voter, told Robertson that President Barack Obama had "a radical view of the future of this country."

"Your president holds a radical view of the direction of your country which is at odds with the majority, expect chaos and paralysis," GOD reportedly said. "The future of the world is at stake because if America falls, there’s no longer a strong champion of freedom and a champion of the oppressed of the world. There must be an urgent call to prayer. The Lord said, a time of maximum stress and peril, greater than at any time since the CBN ministry began. This country will begin disintegrating." Pat Robertson sounds like a mental case! A BAD MENTAL CASE!With Pat suggestion that a man whose wife was far “gone” with Alzheimer’s should divorce her if he wanted a new companion, the television evangelist Pat Robertson stumbled into treacherous moral terrain, setting off storms of criticism and questions about a disease that shatters lives and families. Did Pat forget “in sickness and in health”....Bible words!

Television evangelist and ultraconservative Pat Robertson doesn't think General David Petraeus should be condemned for his affair with writer Paula Broadwell. After all, she is "an extremely good looking woman" and "he's a man." This is a so call man of GOD? Robertson is a low life racist idiot and a total hypocrite. The people that listen to this idiot must be just STUPID! Pat Robertson is northing short of a anti-American so-call Christian terrorist! My GOD is a “ALL MIGHTY GOD! I would “NEVER” use GOD to pew hatred and lie in HIS name! Pat Robertson does that on his show daily! Pat Robertson the so-call white Christian leader fine it OK for a person to cheat on his wife. If the person he is cheat with is a good looking woman!

This “IS NOT” the first time Pat Robertson has gone against Christian teaching! Forever Pat Robertson just like the fake Christian Rev Franklin Graham has stated. That the Mormon religion was a cult religion.Clearly the Mormon religion goes against the teaching of Christianity! But still both hypocrites supported a Mormon for President! Rev. Graham went as far as removing the Mormon from his website. As one of three other cult religion. Massage to the Republican Tea Party.....HATE AND DIVIDE LOST!!!!
