At Christianity Today, we’re constantly tracking important developments in the church and the world. Often we use our network of reporters around the world (and for that, visit our main site). But we also monitor other news outlets, bloggers, newsmakers’ social media feeds, and countless other information streams. Gleanings compiles the most urgent and interesting items we’ve found, explains why you need to know about them, and gives you the background you need to understand them. It’s our snapshot of what God is doing in the world, hour by hour.

Calvary Chapel Pastor Sues Son for Cyberbullying

Visalia's Bob Grenier alleges libel and slander in "online hate campaign."

Chuck Smith's Calvary Chapel movement—which faced a day of reckoning and uncertain future in 2007 over concerns about lax moral standards among its leaders—is making headlines once again.

It's not often that a father will sue his own son. But Bob Grenier, pastor of Visalia Calvary Church, says he is tired of his estranged son Alex Grenier's "cyberbullying campaign" against his parents and their church—so the elder Grenier is pressing charges to make his son stop.

In a lawsuit filed in October, Bob Grenier alleges that Alex Grenier launched a website and "posted accusations that his father committed felony child abuse against him and his three brothers while pretending to be an upstanding preacher and police chaplain," the Fresno Bee reports.

Besides libel and slander, the lawsuit also alleges that Alex Grenier and another Visalia church member, Tim Taylor, "engaged in intentional infliction of emotional distress of the pastor and his wife."

The scandal broke about two years ago, when Alex Grenier first launched his site.

In addition to reporting the Calvary Chapel movement's "day of reckoning", CT previously reported when New Mexico megachurch pastor Skip Heitzig became embroiled in accusations of leadership accountability. He initially resigned from his position, but then returned to lead the church seven months later.

Wow. It's sad to see family members come down to this.

I've been following this story on my blog for a while now. So while Pastor Bob Grenier and is wife are suing their son and former church member, Bob is now raising funds for Hurricane Sandy victims because in his own words, "It's hard on your soul to see the pain and the destruction."

What about the pain and destruction in his own family and church? Former church members, church employees, and family members have pled with him, pled with Chuck Smith, to get these issues reconciled. There are police reports and much documentation. Our churches are sick when we can allow pastors to stay in ministry with this kind of history.

Bob Grenier is being accused of molesting his blood son and merciluosly beating the others. "A pastor in good standing" with 3 out of 4 sons saying that they were exposed to things no son of a "good" man of God should be exposed to. As adults none of the 3 sons have anything to do with thier father except to try to warn everyone with ears that their father is not what he portrays himself to be. He is more like Sandusky, Swaggard or Taggard.

Revenge is all the pastor is looking for after his sons have taken a sizeable bite out of the con man's congregation. Which means money lost. He doesn't care about being apart of theirs lives let alone the biblical mandate of reconsiliation.

Mathew 18 clearly describes how this should have been handled and when the boys could not get one person to hear them, they took it to the net. That last place anyone can be heard without being denied their chance to speak.

Was wondering if you plan on interviewing, Bob Grenier's sons and Tim Talor to add balance to your article. You might also help the reader gain a better understanding to help the Christian community to pray by referring them to the blogsite, Alex Grenier created in order to inform and to warn others of such claims and the efforts he continue to make to Calvary Chapel to resolve these things.

A lot of xtians who never would even think of looking at pr0n on the Internet, nonetheless will avidly BELIEVE every slanderous thing that some blogger says about someone else, and they will believe it all without even the least question or hesitation.

I hope that CT writers will at least make an effort to investigate and present both sides of the story.

I grew up with these boys and frequented the church. Y'all have GOT to be kidding! So, it's OK to abuse your child/ adopted children??? This man beat his kids. My friends!!!! Where is your COMPASSION for these abused children??? Where is it. These, now men, are finally standing up for what they couldn't when they were little boys and y'all are making this a circus! Where's your article in support of holding up these men as they need encouragement to stand against the BULLIES like Pastor Bob??? A good pastor, he isn't Christ and yet y'all hold em on a thrown next to Christ. How many of these so called pastors and deacons are in prison for the same thing?? I'll tell you, a whole LOT! It's an easy way to target the weak being a so called minister of Christ!!! love you Geoff and Alex!!!

After years of being stonewalled by his step-father (Visalia Calvary Chapel pastor Bob Grenier,) as well as the Calvary Chapel CCOF and Chuck Smith, himself, Alex finally got a meeting with Chuck Smith (the leader of the Calvary Chapel fellowship of pastors.)

In that meeting, Alex presented a stack of evidence and names of witnesses, to which Chuck Smith acknowledged that he believed Alex's allegations against Bob Grenier. Unfortunately, Smith chose not to take action.

At one point, some Calvary Chapel pastors were going to confront Bob Grenier when Chuck Smith stopped them. Why?

This is not new news. Honest discussion has been avoided at the following website for years now.

Not so subtle hate campaign cyberbully manipulation and intimidation, in my opinion.

It's not true, "Joe" or "who" whatever you call yourself. Alex says he and his brothers were abuse and you (not knowing anyone on either side) say he is lying. There is no discussion there, only this cyber troll trying to get more people to argue with. It's a waste of time. But if you would like a good laugh you can read how "Who" tries to sound like he's the most intelligent person in the world.

I ran across the website by Alex by accident. At first, I was intrigued and felt really bad for Alex and his situation. I was praying for him and his family. However, over time and various visits to his site, I was disturbed by the hate and slander he feels he can just put out there for everyone to see even though it is not verified. I do believe he was abused and believe everything he says happenend to him, did indeed happen by his family. However, this is where he needs to leave it. A blog site regarding his family. He has even made cracks about hoping Chuck Smith would die from the lung cancer he had. This was were he lost me. Then all of his "Cronies" ganged up on me in a certain post and said "I was drinking kool-aid because I went to Calvary Chapel". This is a favorite saying of theirs. It is offensive. And if you disagree with Alex on his blog, he will delete your post. So much for "free speech". This is something he complains about constantly, but practices censorship on his own site. I feel sorry for the guy

Kim said, "I do believe he was abused and believe everything he says happenend to him, did indeed happen by his family. However, this is where he needs to leave it."

Why do you get to decide when a victim has to leave anything anywhere? The arrogance of this statement is profound. No wonder they say you are drinking the Koolaid, that's a good CC zombie type statement.

"So much for "free speech". This is something he complains about constantly, but practices censorship on his own site. I feel sorry for the guy" you get deleted when you attack the other victims. The calvarychapelabuse.com site is for victims of that system. When a current member of the CC system comes on attacking the victims, they are deleted and banned. We don't need more CC Bullies and your prayers are hollow if you have no love. Just walk on by and tell us to be full and happy. That's the CC way.

Alex Grenier is a champion among those who have been abused within the company walls of Calvary Chapel. What more, he didn't have to do this but because he is a Christian he did not shirk the biblical mandate to love the Lord and His church by calling these out to give an account. As a Christian I am mandated to support his efforts to do so.

And people wonder why some in ministry don't want to have kids.

If this had been a case of a Roman Catholic priest sexually abusing an acolyte, the media would have been all over it, and Chuck Smith would be denouncing the RCC. However, because it is a case about a Calvary Chapel pastor, oh, hands off, never challenge or question the leadership. What blatant hypocrisy. Repent, repent, repent.
