Child Abuse Lawsuit Against Sovereign Grace Ministries Adds Names and Charges
(UPDATED) Lawsuit adds five plaintiffs, seeks class-action status. SGM 'asks for patience' while it investigates claims.
Update (Feb. 27): The Associated Press reports that SGM has asked a Maryland court to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing that "courts can’t get involved in the internal affairs of church business" (AP paraphrase) and that the allegations are too vague.
CT reported on SGM's First Amendment defense in January, noting how legal observers question whether clergy-penitent privilege applies when a denomination is accused of covering up crimes.

Update (Feb. 4): The Associated Press reports the indictment of a former Covenant Life Church youth ministry leader for allegedly molesting four boys between 1985 and 1990. Nathaniel Morales was arrested in Nevada, extradited to Maryland, and is scheduled for a hearing on Friday, according to the AP.
The indictment is unrelated to the lawsuit currently facing SGM as a denomination, but Covenant Life Church issued this statement in January when it was added as a defendant to the suit:
We are sickened by the thought of such abuse—sexual abuse in any form is evil and unconscionable. We are grieved by these allegations. We also recognize that we don’t have all the facts. We would encourage everyone to withhold judgment until an appropriate legal process can be completed.

The pending child abuse lawsuit against Sovereign Grace Ministries (SGM) has been amended, adding five new plaintiffs, five defendants, and 28 charges.
The lawsuit, which seeks class-action status, now alleges that some defendants engaged in abuse directly, in addition to its previous charges that defendants covered up abuse within SGM communities.
In response, SGM spokesman Tommy Hill released a statement on the church's website. "SGM has been carefully reviewing each allegation since the initial claims first surfaced last October. We consider any allegation of harm to a child extremely serious and we have been working diligently in an effort to learn the truth," he wrote. "We ask for patience as we continue to investigate these new allegations. Please continue to pray with us for all those affected by this lawsuit.”
SGM previously stated that the lawsuit "contains a number of untrue or misleading allegations, as well as considerable mischaracterizations of intent."
The amendment lawsuit comes shortly after SGM flagship Covenant Life Church voted to sever ties with the denomination, and SGM leader Dave Harvey, who has written a book on godly ambition, stepped down from his duties.
More details on the lawsuit, as well as the SGM churches which have left the denomination, can be found in CT's first report from October.
SGM made headlines in 2012 when leader C. J. Mahaney took a leave of absence in July 2011 for a "season of examination and evaluation" of charges against him by alienated SGM pastors, including "various expressions of pride, unentreatability, deceit, sinful judgment and hypocrisy." Six months later, SGM reinstated Mahaney in January 2012 after vetting the charges against him. In May, SGM announced plans to relocate its headquarters from Gaithersburg, Maryland, to Louisville, Kentucky—a move that drew criticism.

Why are many of the source links to this story from one of the main SGM detractors?

Ryan,
That's easy. Because anyone currently under SGM's thumb is forbidden to visit any site not peddling SGM wares, and the delivered Christians who have left, and are delirious from all the problems and debacles emblematic of the disaster that is SGM, are surprised to find thousands of others trying to wipe the mess off themselves also. You call them "detractors" but they probably consider themselves "mercifully spared."
BTW, which "detractors" site were you on that linked you here? Oops!

Ryan - probably because SGM has said very little about the whole thing. This article pretty much linked to the only "Pro SGM" people posting about this right now.
It's a really hard and horrible situation and I am just praying that God would let the truth be clear here and that He would use this situation to bring hurting people to Himself for healing. (on both "sides")

It could possibly be that once a lawsuit gets rolling major players may have to bow out of interviews, etc. It's wise counsel from lawyers. I understand criminal prosecution....but I am mystified at Christans launching lawsuits when scripture says not to.

Unfortunately these lawsuits are all too common. We've handled 3 large cases in the past two years and it is appalling to learn of the victim's stories. So many times the abuse comes from the hands of a teacher or other caretaker. Our prayers go out to the families involved

@BrokenHearted
Are you kidding?!? You don't think SGM should be held accountable for their hand in victimizing children? Aren't you afraid that if they get away with it they will continue to devastate the lives and faith of children? The Bible also clearly says we Christians are subject to the governing authorities and to be afraid if we do wrong because "he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer."
Integrity - the Church needs integrity, people. Not hypocrisy.

I am appalled that the Churches which call themselves Biblical and Reformed do not know that they should have a Biblical system set up to deal with Church discipline issues and allegations within each local Church and perhaps as an entire group or so-called denomination. After any allegation is made, investigative work is done to find the truth to such, and then discipline takes place. Part of that discipline should always have aspects which may require a person or parties be then turned over to secular (non-Christian) legal law agencies for further discipline or investigation. We must always after due diligence, report egregious unlawful activities which coincide with the Biblical principles and requires further punishment to the local authorities. Cases such as but not limited to only these would include; murder, rape, incest, sexual child abuse, theft according to the nature and type done, pedophilia, etc.! The reason for this should be easily understood and certainly never entertained as something to be kept silent or covered up.
As Church leaders and congregations we all must also realize that people make allegations against Ministers and Church leaders all the time that are unfounded and occur due to only hate or some other sinful reason they wish to destroy another's character knowing the charges are false. So real thorough investigation has to take place. Also, to wait 20 and 30 years before making such allegations is just in my opinion is not reflecting a person(s) reliability as a legitimate truthful and factual testimony. I understand a small child say five or six years of age may wait until they are grown and remember some events that took place and come forth. But again, children sometimes have very confused thoughts about many things at that age and may just not have all the facts and activities correct. However, there may be something wrong and if possible investigation should be entertained even then. But great care must be exercised in all of this to not "unjustly" accuse someone prior to the actual Conviction and Proof is brought forth. All of this "guilt before proof" we are seeing and hearing now in this generation is not good. We all should be considered "innocent" until proven guilty. Also, the Bible warns us to not just accept a "single" verbal accusation against anyone as truth. In fact, principles in the O.T. reveal we should have two or three witnesses, and even the N.T. reminds us to eventually have this take place. It is easy to throw darts of evil at people but are they really factual and truthful. So, again, we must be wise and set up proper procedures in our Churches to handle all of this. Satan works day and night to destroy our testimony and our Churches and we must we very wise and understand the spiritual battle we are in. God help SGM and may no innocent people be hurt, but may the truth come out and those if any who did wrong be found out and held responsible for their wrong doings. - Lamar Carnes
