'Bible' Miniseries Year's Most-Watched Cable TV Show, DVD Sales Booming
(UPDATED) Home entertainment premiere of History Channel’s epic miniseries is the largest television show launch in past five years.

Update (April 23): Entertainment Weekly reports that producer Mark Burnett has good news for anyone who was a fan of History Channel's miniseries The Bible: He has re-cut the series to create a movie version that will be released in the fall—and he's also working on a follow-up to the show.
-----
Update (April 8): History Channel’s miniseries The Bible ended just last weekend, but the show is already available on DVD—and sales are through the roof.
According to Broadway World, The Bible’s home entertainment launch is the “biggest selling TV [show] on DVD in the last 5 years and the biggest miniseries of all time on Blu-ray, Digital HD and DVD in its first week of release … with 525,000 units sold.”
“According to the Association for Christian Retail (CBA), The Bible is the fastest pre-selling faith based title in its 60-year history,” Broadway World states. “The Bible also ranked #1 across digital stores including iTunes, Amazon, VUDU, Xbox, PlayStation, CinemaNow, and GooglePlay.”
-----
Update (Mar. 12): In its second week, zombies managed to beat the Bible for viewers. The Bible miniseries drew 10.8 million viewers Sunday night, versus 11.46 million for the Walking Dead. However, as Baptist Press reports, Burnett-Downey miniseries still placed second on cable for the night, and has garnered more than 50 million cumulative viewers (according to a press release).
-----
The History Channel’s latest hit drew crowds of biblical proportions, with 13.1 million viewers tuning in Sunday for the premiere of Mark Burnett and Roma Downey’s miniseries on the Bible.
The two-hour episode, portraying Genesis and Exodus, was the most-watched and highest-rated show on TV that night and the most popular cable telecast of the year, beating out The Walking Dead on AMC, according to Nielsen.
“God Beats Zombies! Guess it pays to be eternal vs immortal! #TheBible,” Burnett tweeted following the news.
Last year’s premiere of Hatfields & McCoys on the History Channel scored an audience of 13.9 million, the network’s most-watched program ever and the only one more popular than The Bible, Bloomberg News reported.
Maybe we shouldn’t be surprised. The Gospel Coalition points out the Bible’s been an entertainment hit for decades, with The Ten Commandments, Ben Hur, and The Passion of the Christ ranked among the top-grossing films of all time.
Still, Christians remain skeptical of cable TV’s attempts to retell, debunk, and document the history of their faith. This time, plenty of believing Bible-readers tuned in to see if TV could finally get it right. #TheBible was trending on Twitter all weekend.
“Our greatest hope is that this series will affect a new generation of viewers and draw them back to the Bible,” said Burnett, producer of hit shows such as Survivor, The Apprentice, and The Voice, in a recent interview with CT. Burnett and his wife Downey, who are Catholic, have also pushed for the Bible to be taught in public schools.
While their show’s premiere drew curious Christians, they’ll have to see if the viewership stays with them through the five-week-long series, which concludes Easter Sunday.

I chose to turn it off after an hour and fifteen minutes. I couldn't stand the ridiculous inaccuracies. It simply doesn't take that much more to make the movie follow the Scriptural story. Need an example? You've got an 18 year old Blue eyed Moses killing the Egyptian overseer! You've got Stone tablets being uncovered from solid rock...I could spend all day....
I'm very glad we did NOT invite friends and neighbours over to watch as we would be spending most of our time explaining why that didn't actually happen and that this is what the Bible says he did next etc.
Give me a break. Mark and Roma...you blew it. I won't be watching anymore.

You could try and be encouraging Jeff, I haven't seen it yet but want to. Could you do a lot better?

It was a great watch, ppl need to understand that it is a MINI series. Its obvious that a TV mini series can't cover the entire Bible. I'm glad that they did this production because television is a mess and its an attempt to get ppl to start reading their bibles.

So it wasn't accurate? Hmmm....Moses at 18 killing, Stone tablets uncovered from rock, etc etc etc?. Well how can we help show the "accuracy" of it? (And I believe we're commanded to do that anyhow.) Flip open the Book!. *rolls eyes*
And you wonder why Modern-day Evangelicalism is failing. God help us. :(

In response to Jeff Scott. With all due respect, I must say that you are mistaken. Moses did kill an Egyptian overseer, Ex 2:11, and the Bible says he did it when he was grown. Also Moses received two tables or tablets of "stone" from God where God wrote the ten commandments out, Ex 31:18.
The Bible is the word of God and it is truth. This series will bless those who watch it.
I recommend for those who watch that they follow along in the Bible, I use the YouVersion Ap that easily goes from chapter to chapter. You may think there are inacuracies but perhaps you do not know your Bible.
Also, remember that there is a promise in God's word that it, the word, does not return void, meaning when it is taught, proclaimed, or dramatized, it blesses people! Hope you will reconsider and receive a blessing by studying your Bible more.

I must point out, Jeff, that Ex 2:11 states that Moses killed an Egyptian overseer. And Exodus 31:18 says God gave Moses the Ten Commandments written with His own finger on two tablets of stone.
You need to know your Bible before you point a finger at inacuracies.
Love the first episode and will watch the complete series!

Jeff is correct but his attitude is wrong. Moses was around 40 when he left Egypt. There were other differences from the Bible stories but not enough to change the message. We must remember that the Bible is not man's story, it is God's story.

My favorite part was when Lot's visitors threw off their robes and used martial arts to slay a hundred or so soldiers when escaping from Sodom. This particular part of the story must have been from the King Bruce Lee version of the Bible. (Lot also didn't offer his daughters to the mob. Probably got nervous and forgot his lines). I don't know what happened after that, there was a Psych rerun on.

'Artistic' liberties will always be taken with Hollywood's portrayal of the Bible and it's narratives. The Passion of the Christ did it with an androgynous portrayal of Satan and other details not found in the passion narratives. It's inevitable and unavoidable.

BTW the reason for the supposed success of this series is best summed up in one word......Marketing

I thought that the mini series debut was very good. I agree that there were some things overlooked, such as God not proclaiming His name in the burning bush, Lot not sending his daughters out to satisfy the crowd outside in Sodom. However, people complain about the violence on tv, the negative messages that are circulated through out today's various media outlets; but when a mini series that comes along that will more than likely conclude with the saving love of Christ...people poo-poo it because of little details. I feel that if you love the Lord and know God's word, you will enjoy it; if you don't then you will more than likely make fun/criticze it. I will continue to enjoy it and applaud Burnett/Downey for taking a leap of faith and bringing us the most important book ever wrote and making accessible to us on the History Channel. I also am proud of the History Channel for affording God's word to be brought to us on their station! The television executives need to focus on good things more than things of evil in order to help put this great country on its knees and cause a revival in Christ's name!

Agree with Des Moines Deacon -- the Kung Foo angels were over the top. Someone else said it wouldn't take that much to stick with the story in the Bible, which is dramatic in its own right. But hey, we're in the Argo age so let's make up something that will snag viewers. Who cares what really happened?

It was not developed for scholars but for the general public that has never studied it. When preachers speak and teachers teach we often leave out the in depth details to get to the story.

Let's at least get the 18 vs. 40 argument corrected:
Act 7:23 "When he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel.
Act 7:24 And seeing one of them being wronged, he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking down the Egyptian.

Best thing about the miniseries: it got people talking about the Bible!

Ken G hit the nail on the head!

This is more than simple entertainment. It is a concious effort to bring the bible and its message of hope and love from an eternal God to a new generation that doesn't know him. I say God Bless Roma & her husband!!

Such joy should be spoken of about this series. The Word did not return void, it produced "record ratings". Who cares about the inaccuracies. Critics are looking for something wrong just to be spiteful. A number of movies made in America are never faithful to the original book. But, let it be a story about The Bible, and critics are waiting to pounce on the inaccuracies. Many lost cant see salvation because they are in their own way. ALL WHO READ THIS, MAY GOD RICHLY BLESS YOU, AND MAY HIS MERCY AND GRACE BE UPON YOU.

An Asian Kung fu sword fighting angel was where I could watch no more. No one can dispute the content but the quality of the show is just really bad to be frank.

Maybe some kid will pick up a bible and start to read instead of picking up a gun or drugs. He or she may learn about a power greater then themselves that is better then killing without any knowledge or faith in anything. Let alone themselves. Thank GOD he's on TV now because it also needs all the help it can get. Reality shows........Really!

Yes, there are many things in this mini-series so far that aren't in the Bible, but so far there have been no huge inaccuracies that take away from the scripture. There are two wonderful things happening as a result of this series being aired: 1) it is causing people like me - believers raised in church who have read and heard Bible passages all our lives - to go back and read from the Bible these stories that are being aired, and 2) it is allowing those who are NOT familiar with the Bible to see that there are interesting stories within, which will hopefully make them WANT to read from a Bible. I pray that many unbelievers will be curious enough to seek the truth for themselves.

I agree with Sharon O above, for I am among those who is not familiar with the Bible, except in a very layperson's sense. Many years ago I saw The Ten Commandments, more recently I saw Jesus of Nazareth, but I haven't yet seen this ongoing Bible series. But now I shall.

I am enjoying the Bible Minnie series and am not one bit surprised it is beating out the Walking Dead Series in ratings (actually they should call it the Walking Crap Series because that is what it is). I (and many others) are tired of Hollywood producers reaching down into the lowest depth of the pit of human depravity to please the debased and sinful nature of humanity and then, what is far worse, calling it "Creative" entertainment (i.e. "Walking Dead"). At least, the MInnie Bible Series, in giving us biblical revelation, relates how fallen humanity has arrived to where it is today--separated from God and in need of a Savior---which truth can only be truly known by the power of God's Spirit and Word (Divine revelation) working on the human heart and through faith in Jesus Christ. I believe God will use this Series to expose many to the truth of God's Word and to draw many to Christ in repentance and faith. God bless.

I pray that the Bible series brings glory to God and that lives are saved. Let's not limit what God can do through this outreach.

My guess as to the reason The Walking Dead beat The Bobble (misspelled on purpose) Miniseries? There is more truth in it. It accurately shows the nature of man and our depravity. The Bobble, on the other hand, leaves Christ out and makes it a collection of stories about men fulfilling their purpose. It even twisted scripture in many places to the point of heresy (see Abraham's sacrifice, saying that Samson failed to fulfill his purpose, Noah's mention that it was up to us to restore our relationship with God (if that's true, we're doomed), Samuel's portrayal as a failed leader, the absence of the law, the removal of all the types pointing to Jesus, etc)

I think this series is an embarrassing abomination. I would never let my children watch it. I think it's a joke for the creator so say in a press interview that they wanted to tell the story of a arch of God's love for humanity when it is a brutal, gory account. The violence is unbearable and the point of view totally unoriginal. European accents were shameful and things were ethnically Eurocentric. It is destined to sit on the shelf with all the other terribly uncreative attempts at showing the gospel. The Bible is so rich, so complex and layered, there is no excuse to tun it into such a simple blunt object. If the goal was to create something to preach to the choir with and make a TON of money then they did what they set out to do. If it was to actually spread the GOOD NEWS, it is a fail. In fact I left watching it with less faith than when I started. I asked myself "Is this what I represent as a Christian? If so I think I might want to consider distancing myself from these type of people." My non believer friends would and did turn it off after the first 20 minutes of terribleness. Personally, I am looking forward to Darren Aronofsky's "Noah." Which I am sure will offend the same people that like The Bible, but will be way more compelling as creative examination of a story and faith.

So sad that people think that the inaccuracies were the color of eyes Moses had or the stone tablets, like that even matters. How about the fact that when Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit appeared above Jesus in the form of a dove and everyone present heard the voice of God saying "this is my son, which I have approved", this was such an important event and it was ignored! I can think up reasons why it was ignored. Many people mistakenly believe that Jesus is the all mighty when in reality he is not. Jesus is the son of the all mighty. Now if they had mentioned that God spoke in approval torwards his son, well that means that Christ is not the true almighty god, they're not the same being, they are two separate beings. If they were the same being then wouldn't it be odd that Jesus was saying he approved of himself? You got to reason. How about in his death? He came to die for us, but then the bible says that God rose him from the dead. Reason to yourself. If he is God then wouldn't that mean that he never died in the first place. Death is a state of inactivity which means that he could not be alive somewhere else. I'm surprised to read posts from people talking about 5 or 10 inacuracys when in fact I've lost count. I've counted close to 30 errors per episode and the bad thing is that they ignore important events, very meaningful events that at times are events that were prophitized. Very often they also make up things that NEVER happened. They will answer to Jehovah for leaving out or adding to the holy bible like it warns at the end of Revelation (Apocalypse in some bibles) Jehohah is the Almighty God and soon he will reveal the truth and Everone will have to know his name is Jehovah.

A tooth (plural teeth) is a mignonne, calcified, whitish build found in the jaws (or mouths) of various vertebrates and occupied to break down food. Some animals, strikingly carnivores, also take teeth for the purpose hunting or in place of defensive purposes. The roots of teeth are covered by means of gums. Teeth are not made of bone, but rather of multiple tissues of varying density and hardness.
The unrestricted make-up of teeth is alike resemble across the vertebrates, although there is of distinction converting in their fabric and position. The teeth of mammals be struck by serious roots, and this design is also initiate in some fish, and in crocodilians. In most teleost fish, however, the teeth are attached to the outer surface of the bone, while in lizards they are fond of to the inner come up of the jaw during a man side. In cartilaginous fish, such as sharks, the teeth are attached around perplexing ligaments to the hoops of cartilage that construct the jaw.

I did extend grace for a lot of the inaccuracies, but when they had Jesus, saying to love thy neighbor as thyself, but excluded the most important part, to love God, with all your heart, soul, and mind, I was disappointed. How can we love others, truly if we do not love God first? How can we win others, to Christ, if our love to God is not evident? This is why I read the King James Bible. This is why it is so important, to have word, that is not corrupted by mens hands. Salvation is at stake. If you ever wondered if you could lose your salvation, read Revelation 22:18-19. Folks this is not a game, of chance. Know your Bible, know the King James Bible, so you will not be deceived, by lies.
