What Is Gleanings?

At Christianity Today, we’re constantly tracking important developments in the church and the world. Often we use our network of reporters around the world (and for that, visit our main site). But we also monitor other news outlets, bloggers, newsmakers’ social media feeds, and countless other information streams. Gleanings compiles the most urgent and interesting items we’ve found, explains why you need to know about them, and gives you the background you need to understand them. It’s our snapshot of what God is doing in the world, hour by hour.

Famous Fortune Teller Converts to Christianity as Hong Kong Forgery Trial Looms

Feng shui master accused of forging the will of one of the world's richest women.

Facing forgery charges, Hong Kong feng shui master Tony Chan has embraced Christianity and changed his name to "Peter."

Chan converted to Christianity and renounced his former practice of geomancy just weeks before appearing in court for forging the will of one of Hong Kong's richest women, billionaire Nina Wang, whom Chan also claimed to be his girlfriend.

The Malaysia Chronicle reports that Chan "built a career advising clients including the late Hong Kong property tycoon Nina Wang on feng shui, an ancient Chinese belief system based on harnessing natural and spiritual energies." However, in 2010, he lost a legal battle for Wang's $13 billion estate after a court ruled that Chan had forged her will.

Chan, who changed his first name from "Tony" to "Peter" as a symbol of his new Christian identity, will still appear in court on the forgery charges. However, he says he does not fear a jail sentence because he has "received the greatest salvation."
