McCain Campaign Targets Obamessianism

Mara Vanderslice says a recent McCain ad is a dog whistle suggestion that Obama may be the Antichrist. For what it's worth, Hal Lindsey says the Antichrist "won’t be Barack Obama, but Obama’s world tour provided a foretaste of the reception he can expect to receive."

But that doesn't stop University of Pennsylvania anthropologist John L. Jackson Jr. from claiming that the ad is more than just an effort to paint Obama as the Antichrist -- it's an effort to paint him as Left Behind's Nicolae Carpathia.

Apocalyptic interpretations aside, Georgetown's Jacques Berlinerblau says the McCain ad is "is nothing less than an attempt to nuke Obama's religious appeal and credibility into oblivion."

David Waters says it's just old hat.

Judge for yourself. What do you think the message is?

Comments

Many Christians find this ad to be offensive, distracting, and belittling. We thought John McCain would be overseeing an honorable campaign. I guess we were wrong.

The Matthew 25 Network has started a petition to call upon Sen. McCain to renounces this as. Please Sign!

What an absolutely offensive ad. I'm not really surprised though. It seems that the McCain campaign has decided that it can't fight this one on issues so let's just smear and scare instead. The editing of Obama's comments is particularly disturbing and dishonest but I suppose if you are appealing to your base who already believe all the other lies out there about Obama then making him out to be the Anti-Christ is the logical next step.

I think Senator McCain has tread very lightly here. If you study Senator Obama, his history, who he is and what his message truly says, you'd see just where he wants to take America . . . and it's not where most people think he's taking them. Wake up America. I'm not this biggest fan of Senator McCain either. Of a nation of 320 million people, we could have, should have produced two better candidates. This is going to be quite an election to watch and pray over.

I don't see why anyone is surprised at this kind of ad from the Republican party. John McCain said he would have a clean campaign, but its apparent that he can't stand on the issues, so he and his campaign do everything they can to distract voters. In the past, I would have considered voting for Sen. McCain, but now he has lost his soul to the "party". Its so hard for me to understand how we as Christians can continue to vote for the party of the rich. Are so easily duped?

If the shoe fits, McCain should put it on Obama's foot where it belongs.

If the shoe fits, McCain should put it on Obama's foot where it belongs.

I loved it! After too many months of retching at Obama's messianic pretensions, this commercial was a breath of fresh air! Unlike BHO, the oil companies he vilifies actually produce something of value, something that people actually need, something more than hot air, blather, and rhetoric.

It's baffling to me how a born again Christian can listen to Obama and not understand the direction he wants to take America. As in so many elections in the past, if the Christians would align themselves with the candidate who most exemplies the teaching of Jesus, our nation would not be in the shape it is today.
Obama is epitome of evil, representing the baseness of a party that stands in opposition to all the principals the founding fathers held necessary to create a great nation.

One should ask oneself what were the Christian values that McCain and Obama had demonstrated during the past few months. Were their tactics honorable and deserve our respect as well as our vote? Some Christians unfortunately still judge people by the cover. I have heard so many racist comments from the Christian community that is absolutely shocking although no one wants to confront the issue or admit to it.

Shame on all of us and can you blame the pagans who mocked the hyprocrisy in our church today?

This is so offensive! I am absolutely beside myself... it's like an out of body experience, I'm so beside myself. That's what I'd say if I were a pansy.

This was funny.

Christians who vote for a man who endorses infanticide ought to invest in a good millstone.

Before this ad was shown (I had not seen it before viewing it here), I thought to myself "Could Obama be the antichrist"? It seemed the way the media was portraying all the adoring crowds and adulation on his recent overseas visit to other countries, that this will surely be the way people will be duped into following the antichrist. He too will be a charismatic personality, whom the people will believe is the messiah. However, whether this ad is in bad taste for John McCain, it never-the-less does bear some food for thought.

This venom, McCain's attack message, has only one source and does not come from the Heart of God. It has nothing to do with truth; rather is full of deception and mischaracterization. The sad thing is, this kind of venom has worked in the past, and it just may work again.

To call sarcasm "venom" or anything even close to that level is just absurd.

Frankly, I don't even see how this can be construed as offensive. It's obviously just poking fun at all the messianic themes that have attached themselves to Obama. What Christians should be taking offense at is the "Obamessiah" stuff itself, given that Obama is not, in fact, Jesus. I don't see the sense in shooting McCain for being the messenger here.

I think McCain is perfectly within his rights to call attention to Obama's pretentiousness. He's acting like he's already President and promising to lead the world? That's just asking for this kind of response. Give me a break! This is politics, and if you can't take the heat in a campaign, you have no business thinking of the Oval Office. Listen to how they've attacked the current President; McCain's ad is clever and funny, hardly the kind of attacks that real opposition will bring.

Richard, venom? Are you kidding? Deception? Mischaracterization? All you have to do is play back his own words? Have you heard the anti-McCain ads? Get real!

If Obama is the antichrist, is not that a good thing? Does that mean that the rapture is coming soon? or has it already happened? And I thought that the last seven years was the period of tribulation.

It is beyond me why people are offended by this ad. And beyond my understanding how any Christian can support Obama who single-handedly prevented the "Born-Alive Act" from being passed in the Illinois Senate when he was a state senator. (After he left the IL state senate, the act passed the following year.)

Obama apparently prefers that babies who survive abortion be put in a closet to die rather than receive medical attention. That, and not wanting his daughter "to be punished with a baby" should she make a "mistake" and get pregnant should be enough to insure the Christian community would not support him.

In addition, his letter to a gay group in LA assured them that he opposes and will continue to oppose the Defense of Marriage Act which would define marriage as being between one man and one woman.

Unfortunately, it appears that there are Christians who are so caught up in his charisma they are willing to overlook his devotion to such anti-biblical secular viewpoints.

Once again the McCain organization is using fear and slander to try to win, just like Bush did in 2000 (did he really win) and 2004 with terrorism and "the gays". I hope and pray the American public is not that stupid but then sometimes on these posts I am always proved wrong.

As so much of politics seems to be, this vitriolic attack ad engenders an antagonistic attitude. Is that the manner in which we are to conduct our lives? Even Jesus, when insults were hurled at him, did not come to his defense. Do you remember what he did do?

I disagree with Barak Obama on every core issue, and find little to celebrate in McCain. Nevertheless, one of them will find their way to the oval office. It is the believer's obligation to pray for their leaders, and lest we forget, it is God who sets leaders in place. We should be focusing on the thief and the liar - the enemy of our faith - not a human, through whom this divisive politicking finds its voice.

We must get wisdom and understanding, walk blamelessly; test all things, hold fast to what is good, abstain from any form of evil - for many reasons, but one, so that our light will sine before man and that they will come to the knowledge of truth (1 Tim 2:1-4).

All authority comes from God (Rom 13:1-6) God is our refuge and strength, yet we must not forget the Hosea 4:6 warning, that God's people can be destroyed for lack of knowledge (biblical truth).

Let us hope that God does not shut up the heavens, but that God's people will pray, turn from wickedness, so that He - the Almighty, the One True God - will show compassion on the USA and heal our land.

McCain with hi Pregiato' Moccasin $500 shoes and rich wife beer heiress wants to declare victory because Obama is too popular and while McCain fails to attract as many people to his speeches. He looks more like Bush everyday.

All you freaking conservatives are willing to diss Obama, yet support McCain.

McCain so far has made Bush look like a eloquent speaker. He can't remember the names of countries, he is stumbling over his words. Once president, he'll be older than Reagan and more senile.

I love how you guys will vote for a idiot if he mentions banning abortion, and then turns right around, and guts schools, environmental laws, and employment laws. So as the US slides further into 3rd world status, you can all say "At least he tried to ban abortion!".

Hows Bush working out? Iraq and Afghanistan not enough? McCain will drag us into Iran as well. Small govt? Enjoy your rights? Not anymore. He'll be Bush III. Under Clinton, our debt shrunk. Under every previous republican president our debt burden grew.

Also, if it were 70,000 people screaming in a stadium for McCain we wouldn't even be having this conversation. And you'd all be upset when liberal bloggers called him Hitler.

You need to look into McCain's personal life. He's not a hero, or a particularly nice person. He divorced his 1st wife ( who is still hopelessly in love with him ) when he got back from Vietnam. She had been in a car accident and was disabled. Guess McCain didn't want to deal with it, and married one of his cuter younger coworkers. At least Obama is still on his first marriage.

You keep voting for these idiots, who keep throwing you to the lions! Schools, medical care, are all gutted by these people in a very un-christian-like manner. And you keep voting for them! Yes Sir, may I have another! Anti-Abortion you say? Sign me, sure, gut everything else, get us entangled in another war, and refuse to take care of the soldiers' casualties or those darkies in Louisiana, just tell us you will ban abortion!

I don't understand it. Evangelical Christianity is responsible for this mess.

Compassionate and Fiscal Conservatives are a joke, and the joke is on you. Please stop ruining my country.

So much for a clean and positive campaign about the issues. Not that it's shocking, coming from Mr. "McCain-my-last-name-is-Feingold." Anyone in favor of limiting free speech like he is is bound to use dirty tricks and falsehoods to obtain office.

McCain is an adulterer and an enabler of drug abuse within his family. I will take the candidate who loves the mother of his children and attends church regularly any day. No party has a monopoly on Christianity, especially when that party is tainted with the hypocrisy of homosexuality, child rape and adultery amongst its leaders. As a god-fearing American, I am sick to death that my beliefs are pandered to and are subject to petty attempts at manipulation by all sides.

Funny to see someone metnion infanticide...how many Iraqi children have died. When McCain jokingly sings about bombing Iran, do you think hes singing about a special kind of bomb that differentiates between adults and children. I think some of you could do well to go back and study your bibles and think hard before you take war and death so lightly.

I find it sad that the republicans will stoop so low as to try and scare us with a boogie man attack on Mr.Obama.
Please stick to the issues so I can make the right choices for my kids future!

The GOP are so lost in thier own rhetoric--that anyone who differs with thier self-reighteous selves is labeled "anti-Christ", elitist, damn liberal, pinko commie....

Problem with that is that most of the public KNOW it was GW/Cheney and the GOP who have brought this country to the ruinious condition you find it presently.

It's not Obamas' fault, that the GOP have lead this country to their corporate hedge-fund bottom-feeders off the backs of middle and lower-class Americans..
It's time you voters realized the ruse the GOP is pulling over on you--Big Pharma, Big Oil, defense are making millions hand-over-fist while saying "look over there!"- liberal, an anti-Christ, a commie to further divide this country against itself..
Stand with us Indes and GOP---at what low do you want this country to further sink-at what point will you quit playing the faithful taken-advantage of stooge?
Please vote for change--if not for yourself-for the youth and future of this country who don't want to be sent to more illegitimate wars..
Peace.
No MAC.

First reaction? I don't think Obama is the Antichrist, but this is funny. It's especially timely after watching so much media coverage fawning over him. The ad seems to give voice to an underlying current - even though it's not him, it just feels like what will happen with the Antichrist. And I've heard some Liberal pundits warning the Obama campaign to watch the pride factor lest they fall. Second reaction? It's not an honoring approach, but this is politics and I don't see that either Obama or McCain is running the kind of campaigns they said they would run. If you're going to challenge one to do better, then challenge them both. As Christians it's our responsibility to dig deeper into where the candidates really stand on the issues that are important to us and our nation. Shame on us if we base our vote on ads from either McCain or Obama.

The ad played upon Obama's own words and makes him look foolish--Obama's own fault for being so self obsessed. Would like to see ads based on issues of importance going into the fall and not ads from both sides that waste our time and campaign contributions.

I agree with whoever wrote that out of 350 million how did we end up with these two? There is no good choice. How do you decide between a heartless adulterer and a heartless bloody baby killer? Maybe politics have become so ugly the GOOD don't want to run? Or maybe the good can't compete with the sly. Christians have to pray for discernment past the obvious. I know black Christians who look no deeper than the color of a man's skin. Ditto some white Christians. Shame on both. Democracy makes the voters the boss, the king. We are the ones who hire the public servants and who must give account to God. We should be on our faces praying and repenting for letting it come to this for choices. Pray for the Vice Presidential choices. They may be extremely important if the president ever has to step down. I don't think Obama is the Antichrist. But I believe the Antichrist is alive and well somewhere watching and learning from Obama and taking notes on how easy it is for someone with a big smile and slick speeches to manipulate crowds and to use catch phrases to stir emotions and win a following of shallow unthinking people. I don't think the Antichrist will be an American but I believe Americans will follow him to show how "open minded" they are and how "peace loving" because the Bible says he will promote himself as a man of peace. Since the world is is love with celebrities, he will probably be a celebrity first and then become a politician. So he will probably be young and good looking and clean cut.

all this sludge from a candidate who was involved in the Keating Five, cheated on his wife, finally marrying the woman he was running around with who stole drugs and makes millions from selling beer. not really the kind of man i want leading this country.
