The 'Traditional Values' Part of Obama's Speech

Not a lot of God talk in Obama's speech tonight, but there will be talk about abortion, same-sex marriage, and traditional values (as well as a promise to "end our dependence on oil from the Middle East" in ten years). From the prepared remarks:

America, our work will not be easy. The challenges we face require tough choices, and Democrats as well as Republicans will need to cast off the worn-out ideas and politics of the past. For part of what has been lost these past eight years can’t just be measured by lost wages or bigger trade deficits. What has also been lost is our sense of common purpose - our sense of higher purpose. And that’s what we have to restore.

We may not agree on abortion, but surely we can agree on reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies in this country. The reality of gun ownership may be different for hunters in rural Ohio than for those plagued by gang-violence in Cleveland, but don’t tell me we can’t uphold the Second Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals. I know there are differences on same-sex marriage, but surely we can agree that our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters deserve to visit the person they love in the hospital and to live lives free of discrimination. Passions fly on immigration, but I don’t know anyone who benefits when a mother is separated from her infant child or an employer undercuts American wages by hiring illegal workers. This too is part of America’s promise - the promise of a democracy where we can find the strength and grace to bridge divides and unite in common effort.

I know there are those who dismiss such beliefs as happy talk. They claim that our insistence on something larger, something firmer and more honest in our public life is just a Trojan Horse for higher taxes and the abandonment of traditional values. And that’s to be expected. Because if you don’t have any fresh ideas, then you use stale tactics to scare the voters. If you don’t have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from.

You make a big election about small things.

I thought Obama's speech was excellent and spoke to the needs of the American people. He is what our country needs right now -- someone who will lead and also can identiy with the average person and his/her struggles and fight for the common individual. His strong family values and faith speak volumes for him and I know he will make the best President of the USA.

Well, I'm convinced! Let's give the Democrats another chance. Put them in office and let's see what they can do. It's time for the Harvard types to take over and straighten us out. I guess you have to be from a city of more than 9000 to count.

Obama is the quintessential empty suit. He has done nothing in all his years in politics. There is not a single substantive thing he can point to where he provided leadership or was instrumental in its coming to pass. I was challenged on that by a co-worker today and I asked her to name one accomplishment attributable to Obama. Crickets...

AMEN AMEN AMEN.
THIS IS A REAL FARCE , THE CHRISTIANS AND ALL WHO BELIEVE IN GOD

The last commentor is simply a moron with a capital M

Get real. Do you think your perverted apocolyptic end times myths are really going to play out in American politics. First of all if evangelicals would begin to interpret Revelation the way the church fathers and Christians throughout the centuries before the release of the Scofiled reference Bible did then you wouldn't have all these Left Behind types paranoid looking up to the clouds.

Relax, take a deep breath and recognize that the American political scene is not a predictor of the "soon coming end"

To those of you who thinks the one who spoke about the end times is a moron, think again. The Bible says the one who does not believe in the Lord Jesus Christ is a fool. Take a moment and look around you and see what's happening in this country. We need a president with very strong family values, and one who respects the life of another even in the womb. God says I knew you before you were even formed in the womb. What does that tell you? The Bible also says that those who sleep with the same sex will suffer the due penalty of their sin. Look again and see what's going on. You be the judge. I'm sad to see where this country is heading and I pray for our country's values and that our constitution never changes. May all who read this be blessed. People forget that our country was founded on God. We would not have this country and it's freedoms if it wasn't for our forefathers who prayed and developed the values they set. Look at other nations and see the difference. Their values are very different than the US. God has blessed this country abundantly because the US, at one time, made Him first in their lives and honored Him. Be careful.

Sorry to state this bad news but our country was not founded on God. It was founded on folks who say "Lord, Lord" then go about doing every wicked thing under the sun. Go back and read what the settlers did to the Indians and the Africans. Killing, stealing and injustice did not begin with Roe vs Wade, Enron, and street gangs. This stuff began with the early settlers who, apparently, did not believe some people were as human and God-created as were they. Surely they felt their ways were pure when they killed and robbed from day one while they kept their pious looks and spurted out their religious platitudes. The greatest problem is that there has really not been any true repentance. Therefore we continue to have this pollution in our nation... killing with no remorse, stealing and defrauding and making believe we are a christian nation. No, the nation is not Christian and The White House is not the church. The Church is in the hearts of God's people throughout the world. The Church in America must take responsibility for her actions and not try to throw their guilt off on Washington DC. Judgement must begin at The House of God. Nations are judged when the people of God in that nation are not measuring up to God's standards...The government is not the problem. Jesus said "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and give to God what is God's". God has entered a covenant with His people and not with the centers of government. O that The Church would stop marching on Washington. Washington should be marching on The Church to see why the folks in the church buildings won't get their hearts right with God so that the nation can be blessed.

Church people find themselves ascribing to falsehoods when they begin to do the cop-out and placing their responsibilities on the government. They begin to ascribe a particular political party to being the party that God approves of. They are able to sell this concept to those who are really looking for a cop-out. They say that certain ones are "born again"...they pray nice prayers for those they like and of course they pray for the ones they don't like also; those prayers , however, are for God to judge and be harsh. Here we see God's people setting up their idols then falling down to worship those idols. If only we could see our own polluted ways. God can see and He will not follow behind the ways and deeds of the spoiled brat mentalities of those who say "Lord, Lord" but who pass over the weightier matters of Justice and Mercy and Truth.

Well said,

As a Black Evangelical I do not vote only on Abortion/gays. That would be stupid and unbiblical. In my view a "Commted Christian" votes according to his/her Prayer, Medication and guideance via the Holy Spirit. In essence how you have been led. The false notion, that a "party" within a secular Gov't has one that is closer to truth than the other is absurd.

I am for Obama because he is not a professed ADULTERER AND STAYED FAITHFULT TO HIS FIRST WIFE. To me this is the core of a man's heart --- How he loves and devotes and keeps his vows -- before God and Man

I am very interested as a Canadian and a Lay Minister as to how you all take up the arm of Our Lord to say what and how and when about your Election.
An election is based on the man, not his personal past or what goes on in his house. Make it Political America. Get your heads out of the ground and realize what Canada has done that is Greater than American can ever be. We are have the most democratic electoral system in the world. WE have been modeled after for many decade's.

We must consider Christ in all that we do. But how have YOU the right, to determine another man's heart? Another man's wife's heart? The Lord stated : Judge yea, least thee be judged" You are all so very quick to judge, to concern yourselves with the end times. The end of this world will come when God decides. At no other time and certainly not when American tries to chose for him.

I suggest strongly and fervently, that you all come to realize that democracy is something you all need to find, when you do, then possibly your country may function proplerly.
A president that is Democratic and a House that is Republican is dysfuncational. So try to do this the right way. Keep your checkes and balances, but know that Our Lord has no care about your election.
That your country was founded like ours, but with theives, liars, Slave mongers, mormons with many wives. If this is what you are proud of, go back to your Bible.

I pray int he name of Our Lord Jesus Christ that America will come to the reality that is must come to. I pray that Americans will look to you Lord and seek you, take you into their hearts in a honest manner and stop their fighting with others. Lord they need guidance from you more than any country I can think of, Lord help these people to know you better to follow you and to read your word on a daily basis. I pray Lord that you will heal these people and show then them the Truth about what they stand for, that they are living satanic lives and they need You Lord. Lord I know I am asking for a lot, but I pray this prayer through your Son Jesus the Christ, Amen

I am impressed with many of the comments above. But the greatest arguments are the ones which show compassion. When a person is faithful in the little things, then the bible says God will reward him with bigger things to be faithful in. If Obama has been a man of his word without a proven political track record then he can be granted the favor of God to perform well in the bigger office of president. By the way, the same goes for John McCain. Let us excersie our vote and do it passionately and with the conviction that is compatible with the light we have received. Then let the outcome rest because God will still be in control. With that said, as a black who has voted for both democrat and republican presidents, let us fight the issues that will reveal God's love and compassion and leave behind the arguments that tend to condemn and put down. Obama is a democrat and he believes. John McCain is a republican and he believes. Some men believe in sprinkling and some immersion and have caused bitter divisions as a result. God has used unbelievers to bring about his purposes. So let go and let God.

I am a conservative Christian, and even I was taken in for a few minutes by Obama's speech. It's hypnotic at first. But the longer he went on, the more it sounded like he was just saying what everyone wanted to hear. A few days later, it was pointed out that in order for him to accomplish even the few things he gave specifics on, he would violate his promises to do other things. I am now more firmly convinced than ever that Obama is all talk and no action. I think his record backs that up.

Killing innocent children that God has allowed to be conceived in my view is the most shockingly evil thing that we could conceive. Unless there is no God, or He doesn't care, or He has nothing to do with life, we are monsters in His eyes if we promote abortion. Is it ignorance about when conception occurs, or philosophical right of a mother of the "unjust aggressor" to rid herself of aggression until that aggressor can live on his or her own? Or is it just another desensitization, like bikinis? "Lord, Lord" ideals were stated by our founders, though they came a long way from living them. Rejecting "Lord, Lord" ideas is another thing. To insist on scrubbing our hands for ten minutes before surgery, knowing surgeons will only do five minutes is also another thing. What is right, and what is shockingly wrong has been warped to the point we might wonder if Jesus would consider our love of abortion an unpardonable sin.

You know what I find truly fascinating, is how people who call themselves Christians get all riled up about abortion and at the same time turn a completely blind eye to the children who are born and left uncared for, abused, mistreated. There is such a great disconnect. It's as if Christian love only extends to the unborn child!

May God help us all!
