God talk on the last night

At least two speakers talked about God tonight - the last night of the two conventions.

"It's my hope the Republican Party, with the selection of John McCain and Sarah Palin, will be a part of a return to God's word that will lead America to a spiritual revival so that God can truly bless America." Joe Gibbs, who recently retired as the Washington Redskins coach.

Earlier in his speech, Gibbs said,

Think about this, then. If you and I are playing the game of life, God's our head coach. Would he put us here without a game plan? Absolutely not. He's done that, and down through history when we followed God's game plan, his Bible, his Word, it leads to success for both individuals and -- (cheers, applause) -- for both individuals and countries.

Now, my life is a personal example. I'm a testimony. When I veered away from God's game plan and became a foolish person, I suffered the results. It led to a financial disaster, a vocational struggle, and a serious health issue.

But yet, then again, when I followed God's game plan, His word, this average person, with that game plan, was able to have some of the greatest experiences in the world.

Pat and I right now have a great family with eight grandkids. (Cheers, applause.) We also have been able to enjoy Super Bowls and NASCAR championships. (Cheers, applause.) Right game plan leads to what? Success. Bad game plan, falling away from God's word, leads to disaster. I'm a personal testimony to that.

Now, this -- this convention has created and crafted the political game plan for our leaders and our country. What great issues we're tackling. Wouldn't it be great going forward in the future, when we're discussing some of these great issues, wouldn't it be great to have someone say, "I wonder what God would think about this?" (Cheers, applause.)

After all -- after all, when you think about it, God sent his son to this Earth. He selected some very average people. He crafted the greatest game plan of all time that continues to this day to change the world.

And then American decathlete and 2008 gold medalist Bryan Clay:

My priorities are: God first, family second, and track third. I can tell you that without my faith -- in God, the support of my family and friends, and my strong work ethic -- I would not be standing before you today with a Gold medal hanging around my neck.

My coaches, mentors, and most importantly, God and my family are a big part of my success, on and off the field.

... [W]hether your platform is a classroom, a conference room, a track or the White House, we all must stay true to our principles.

Both men of God are right about McCain. He is our man for 2008.

This is ridiculous! What a wrong statement. The fact of the matter is McCain is running on money that is againts Christian principles. Do any of the christian evangelicals know that his wife inherited her fortune as a result of being one of the largest beer distributors in the US?

Neither of the candidates (John and Sarah) are Christians so lets deal with it.

To vote Republican is to vote in favor of war, making the rich richer at the expense of the poor and middle class, and bigotry. Yeah, real Christian. The friend of my enemy is my enemy, and so Evangelicals, as supporters of Republican policy, are my enemies.

Samuel & Shannon

Beer is EVIL? Where is that passage located in the Bible? hard work is EVIL? Again please point these out for me! I believe it says do not be drunk! And money is not EVIL......it is the LOVE/LUST for money. Money is a tool not an end! Foolishness!

"The friend of my enemy is my enemy"....I think you are a bit confused.....the enemy of my enemy is my friend. When was war deamed evil in the scriptures? Must be some 'extra book' I don't have in my Bible! Wealth is evil...again some 'extra book' I do not have.

Class warfare and racial warfare sounds like divide and conquer out of the communist play book! Does the demonization of wealth, race, beer/wine/spirits... Remember we tried Prohibition....it didn't work! It caused more crime and death.......must be a history they don't teach anymore!

I have to agree with JimA, to some extent. What dupes people must be to believe these two truly stand for Christina values. Any politico gets religion when his or her seat is being pulled from under them. The focus should be on how they express their faith through policy, working for the under priveleged, backing moral policies meant to healp mankind and Americans. With great power comes great responsibility. These two will bring the same cowboy mentality we've seen in the last 8 years. And the RNC speeches, full of lies and no concrete direction for our nation. When the evangelicals begin thinking from a Global Christian perspective I think the Republicans will have taken their votes for granted. And they'll surround themselves with the same incompetent staff like GW solely for the sake of the abortion issue. if that isn't poor representation, I don't know what is.

All,

I just discovered the joy of blogging a couple days ago. I hope it doesn't become a real addiction.
Blogging about politics on a Christian website is intoxicating. What a great way to interface with those who have no interest in Christianity but want shove their half-baked political ideas into every open oriface they can find. Please pray for patience, good judgement and growth in the knowledge of Christ.

Sarah Palin: Great Politician, Horrible Mother.

It's easy to get fired up over the McCain, Palin ticket. I can't say enough about Sarah Palin. I liken her detractors to skaters who go down hard; legs akimbo, that look of disbelief. Again, we’re seeing them fold like lawn chairs. It’s long overdue. Anyway, here's a clip from Jan & Dean. I found it apropos. Bet you can’t watch just once: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eX7X4FovYRA&NR=1 And how ‘bout them Dems: lost in space, or true tales from the Pork-master General: http://theseedsof9-11.com

So McCains wife made her money from beer sales-big deal, nothing wrong with that. The only thing I see is legalists trying to rule and regulate everyone with their morality assault. If Jesus were alive in the flesh today I could see him at the wedding knockin back a cold one. Get over it Sam.

The fact that the Palin family are not throwing their daughter, Bristol. away as so many American families have when their daughters have had premarital sex and babies out of wedlock is great.
I hope their response would be the same if they were not in the national and international spotlight.
The way that the Republican Party and seemingly the mass of conservatives have trumpeted the fornication and its fruits makes me wonder how many young and impressionable girls will think it's alright to have sex outside of marriage even though their parents and other role models have preached abstinence to them ad infinitum, ad nauseum all their lives.
It makes me think of Matthew 23:25-33 with a good measure of Romans 2:1-11 thrown in for all of us.

Yours in Christ Jesus,
Michael

A man once said, "Evil prevails when good men do nothing!" Yes, we belong in Iraq. Our God is a violent God, Jesus was nailed to the cross after being beaten, and He was God's Son. He died there for your sins. Iraq was Babalon at one time, evil prevailed there then as well as now. It's time to take back what the devil has taken while helping the innocent survive.
I believe abortion is the devil's attempt to keep Jesus from coming again. He's covering his bases in case He comes as an infant again. By the time a woman has an abortion the fetus has a beating heart and a brain. It is a living being and feels pain.
I say to Palen and McCain, "Go, fellow Christians, go!"

John McCain and Sarah Palin will spark a return to God's Word and a spiritual revival? You have to be kidding.

I have heard that Sarah is Assembly of God so she probably is a true Christian.

Bill Azusa755@sbcglobal.net

The biblical description of Christians as sheep is an apt one.
Whatever happened to being wise as serpents and innocent as doves? All a candidate has to do is be Republican and be against gay marriage and abortion and they have your vote.
So how well did GWB work out for the country?
Why do you let the Republican party manipulate you? How long will you continue to vote for a party whose policies are against the interests of 95% of the country?
The USA is not the kingdom of God. The more the church seeks political power, the less spiritual power it will have.

Another 4 years of false promises? I think not. So did Bush/Cheney promise us...remember the argument about ten commandments?
Time for us to wake up and stop equating republican party with Christianity. Can you see that there is greater agenda to use the bible to keep a certain non-christian interest in power. W have begin to see traces of it from the guy who voted 95% with Bush/Cheney and from our latest "madam lipstick" who states with exaggerated versions of her achievements in office and sometime outright lies. When she was a candidate for the Arkansas governor's race she supported the Bridge to somewhere..to the governor's office,no sooner did she get into office, the bridge to the governor's office became "bridge to nowhere". Alaska under lipstick, has the most earmarks by any state in US history and yet McCain is an ardent crusader against earmarks. True the she listed the state jet on EBay but she gives the impression it was sold on EBay when contrarily, it was sold privately to a broker at a loss to tax payers. She increased taxes for oil companies in Alaska yet she touts that she is for tax-break. Wake up people!

Correction: Sarah Palin is governor of Alaska not Arkansas as earlier stated.

Judy,

If you're attempting irony..then well done. Unfortunately I think you probably believe all you've written. You may want to re-read your bible....I think it says something about Jesus coming "in glory riding on the clouds" not as a baby!! However following your logic what if Iraq was his chosen place to return and we bombed him???? I hope you can see how ridiculous your attempt at an argument is. You also said:
"Our God is a violent God, Jesus was nailed to the cross after being beaten, and He was God's Son".
That's heresy, God was in Jesus reconciling the world to himself...it wasn't that God was being violent. God is Love. John 3:16 and 17 says all you need to know about God's attitude to the whole world (yes that includes the Arabs too)...not just the USA. I think verse 17 is just as important as verse 16 although for some reason its very rarely quoted.

For God sent not His Son into the World to condemn the World, but that the World through Him might be saved.

You guys are runnin' scared over a woman, who would have thought it? Truth be told you must be feelin' kind of stung by the fact that the libs really should have been the ones who did it first in this election--ouch!

News for Coach Gibbs - 8 years of an evangelical in the White House didn't spark a return to God's word. Maybe it's because Bush's policies don't usually line up with scripture (scandals, unnecessary war, torture, etc). I really don't think that electing McCain would be much different, especially because McCain doesn't seem nearly as committed to his faith. And I'm sorry but Palin just seems so vicious and aggressive (barracuda?). Her disrespectful acceptance speech (and McCain's disrespectful negative TV ads) don't really add up to being a good witness of the love of Christ in their hearts. Obama, by contrast, has demonstrated a much more conciliatory and humble tone in his campaign. His economic and health care policies will help reduce the rate of abortions, as his endorsement by pro-life movement co-founder Frank Schaeffer would attest.

Bernie,

Very well said.

It's funny how you flamin' libs only see the one side that you want to see. Seems to me I remember plenty of barbs and critisizm coming from the democratic convention. If you're gonna give it you'd better be ready to get it back. Why is everybody so up in arms about Palins speech? Gulliani's was pretty harsh maybe more so than Palin's. I think it has more to do with you backwoods "christians" who like to try to keep women in their place and under their thumb.Stop draggin' your women around by their hair and join the 21st century.

Slider, yes it's true that some of Obama's ads have gone negative recently, but they don't have nearly the mocking and sarcastic tone of McCain's ads. The Democrats did say that McCain's voting record was 90% with Bush a lot, but they didn't have much time to be as negative because they were too busy talking about their agenda and ideas for the country. And yes, Giuliani's speech was harsh, also, but I didn't mention him because he's not on the ticket. Honestly, I think his speech showed why his candidacy fizzled out. By the way, it seems like you are quite the instigator, tossing around labels and accusations like that.

Bernie- I don't see myself so much as an instigator as much as I do a hmmm... Ok so I am an instigator, but it's only to make people think deeply about the thoughts and idea's that they just put out there.Often people have no clue or understanding of what they just stated. Now it's time to turn my attention to your comments. I didn't know there was such a thing as a "Sarcasto-meter" that judged who was more sarcastic than anyone else, so I guess that is just your opinion correct? My point is,this is an election year and it always gets ugly on both sides, the venom gets spewed and accusations are carelessly thrown around--I know this and you know this, so lets not pretend one side is innocent and the other is a beast--they all play like children stuck in the house on a rainy day.

I am so disappointed that fellow Christians are supporting and apparently seduced by the invective of Sarah Palin. The manner in which she slurred "community organizers" hurts my heart. This is the same kind of dismissive attitude and arrogance that Pontius Pilate showed.

I guess Jesus was just a lazy itinerant who liked to wander around the countryside talking all the time, huh? Why didn't he get a job, rather than living off the donations of people he passed by? What is he, a beggar or something?

That's what Sarah Palin's speech implied to me. It was so disrespectful, unkind, and hateful. That is not certainly not Christ-like. God is love. Jesus is love. And if anyone in this election shows brotherly love and devotion to helping his fellow man, I'd have to say it's Barack Obama.

Look deep into scripture, and your hearts, and find the love of the Lord, people. Hate is not a family value, or a Christian one.

ANYONE EVER HEAR OF SEPARTION OF CHURCH AND STATE. KEEP YOUR PERSONAL BELEIFS OF MYSTICAL BEINGS AND MAGICAL POWERS TO YOURSELF WHEN DISCUSSING POLITICS PLEASE!

Once again I'm glad that the Palin family is not throwing their daughter away like trash as so many American families have their daughters in similar situations, but the way the Republican Party has trumpeted Bristol's actions before the world reminds me very much of Matthew 23:25-33.

25Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

26Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

27Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

28Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

29Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,

30And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

31Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.

32Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.

33Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

To the person who called Jesus a lazy itinerant, who may have been too lazy to get a job and living off of the people. Maybe he wasn't too lazy to get a job . Maybe he was too busy healing the sick and raising people from the dead. Giving eyesight to the blind and healing lepers can sometime take away time that might otherwise be spent checking the classified adds. He fed the hungry and gave healing to the souls of the oppressed through his God given message of hope. And who would convey that message better than He who was God in the flesh. You know not what you say when you mock the Lord of Lords. Better for you to keep your mouth shut and smash your keyboard than to use the internet to blaspheme the Son of God who takes away the sin of those in the world who would dare to believe!

"Our God is a violent god."

Absurd. A statement like this completely pisses on the New Testament and the central teaching of Christ as the new Covenant of Peace.

I greatly admire and respect John McCain. Palin is a political idiot, a wingnut who exhibits a form of pathological, mentally ill expression of religion and I think there is a reason Barack Obama and Joe Biden will win today by a landslide. 70 prominent Republicans who have endorsed Obama think so, and I think so. Wake up from your brainwashing America.
