Reaction to Bristol Palin's pregnancy

Here are a few comments from the conservative evangelicals on Sarah Palin's daughter Bristol Palin's out-of-wedlock pregnancy. These evangelicals were thrilled when Palin was chosen as vice president.

Dr. James Dobson statement:

"In the 32-year history of Focus on the Family, we have offered prayer, counseling and resource assistance to tens of thousands of parents and children in the same situation the Palins are now facing. We have always encouraged the parents to love and support their children and always advised the girls to see their pregnancies through, even though there will of course be challenges along the way. That is what the Palins are doing, and they should be commended once again for not just talking about their pro-life and pro-family values, but living them out even in the midst of trying circumstances.

"Being a Christian does not mean you're perfect. Nor does it mean your children are perfect. But it does mean there is forgiveness and restoration when we confess our imperfections to the Lord. I've been the beneficiary of that forgiveness and restoration in my own life countless times, as I'm sure the Palins have.

"The media are already trying to spin this as evidence Gov. Palin is a 'hypocrite,' but all it really means is that she and her family are human. They are in my prayers and those of millions of Americans."

"I think it's a very private matter," said Roberta Combs, president of the Christian Coalition of America told the Associated Press. "It's a matter that should stay in the family and they have to work through it together. My prayers go out to them."

Mathew Staver, dean of Liberty University School of Law, told Liz Sidoti of the AP: "We're all sinners. We all make mistakes. Certainly, the ideal is not to get pregnant out of wedlock. But she made the right decision after her mistake. It's absolutely shameful to put her child in the spotlight. She's not running for office. When someone can't face issues, they try to tear down a family."

Comments

How nice that Gov. Palin knew about her daughter's pregnancy and decided to accept VP nomination. "Hey, Bristol, you think having a baby at 16 will be hard. How about I turn the entire country's ire on you?" What mother would do that to her daughter. You gotta question Palin's judgment. That is just mean to parade her daughter through the mud for her own opportunity.

I'm absolutely floored by the comments I read on here. What happened to grace?

Palin is doing her best to protect her children while also serving her country, and this would not have been publicized if it weren't for the absolutely insane attacks from the leftist bloggers. Some children whether preacher's kids, governor's kids or VP's kids are in the spotlight ... that doesn't mean their mistakes should be fodder for political gossip.

It's a shame that this has been publicized as it has.

Given that Palin has advocated abstinence-only education and is against abortion, her failings with her daughter are fair game. If her reactionary christian agenda can't even work in her own family, it has no place in the greater American society.

A parent’s first responsibility is to protect and raise their children. It is a duty that often requires great personal sacrifice. It is clear that Ms. Palin’s own ambitions are her highest duty. What parent would accept the vice presidential nomination knowing that by doing so his or her 17 year old pregnant daughter would be humiliated in the national press? What parent would put personal ambition over the responsibility that comes with raising a new born special needs child? This is not the character of Christ. This is selfish ambition whitewashed in religious jargon. Anyone who would exploit their own children for personal gain is not worthy of respect. And that Senator McCain would offer the nomination knowing these facts calls his own judgment into question.

Gideon,

I think it's too convenient to pass this off on liberal bloggers. John McCain knew about this from the start, and chose to say nothing so liberal bloggers and I presume he hoped Barack Obama himself would look bad. He knew that in today's political landscape, secrets like this could not be kept for long, he was just hoping to use the defamation of the Palins for political gain. I don't like the leftists that have chosen to attack her, but I'm not about to defend the Republican right in this, either. They allowed a seventeen year old girl and a baby with Down's Syndrome to be dragged through the mud just to try and prove a political point. Where is the honor in that? The Palins are commendable, all the rest of the parties in this are not.

The message is clear from James Dobson:

Hey kids, don't have sex, but if you do, just ask God to forgive you.

Hey parents, don't let your kids learn how to prevent becoming pregnant if they have sex, because that would encourage them to have more sex. Just take care of your new grandchild while your child finishes growing up.

Hey unbelievers, we are going to do the most we can to make sure that your kids don't learn to prevent pregnancy in school so you too can take care of grandchildren while your children are finishing growing up.

Thanks a lot James Dobson.

I'm torn. I cannot judge Bristol. However, it reflects poorly on Sarah Palin both as a mother and a grandmother-to-be. Clearly, her family needs her more than John McCain.

For Sarah Palin to accept the nomination knowing her daughter's personal life would be spread all over tabloid's, the internet, etc is sickening. Its a character issue.

A baby should be born into a home of married parents, but I feel sickened by the fear Briston was pressured into marriage to satisfy her mother's ego-driven agenda. Marriage is a sacrament and should be considered seriously. Of course, the baby is a blessing. But an unhappy marriage between two immature people is a curse.

If Ms. Palin as an unmarried woman were to become pregnant while attending Liberty University she would most likely suffer "academic withdrawal" (i.e. expulsion) for immorality. Apparently only the daughters of Vice Presidential nominee's are deserving of forgiveness.

Fabulous point Chris!!!!

Dobson is right that this is a personal affair for the Palin family to deal with. For this to play out in the campaign spotlight reflects on the poor judgment of McCain. If McCain does not take the VP choice seriously, why should anyone take him seriously.

Clearly McCain did not vet his VP choice. Alaskan corrupt politics are coming under the campaign spotlight and the facts are coming out on the supposed Alaskan reformer pose. This newest soap opera episode just reinforces that McCain does not have the temperament or judgment to be president.

what good Christian mother would willingly leave her large family of young children to take on increasing career responsibilities? how could a normal mother have a baby, then months later sign on for a grueling job where she will be introspected and too busy to be a mother? who is taking care of this special needs child? she is already gone from her child on the road campaigning, does this fact of her work display that if her new child was not special needs or not her daughters illegitimate offspring, as rumors suggest, would she have felt more maternal then?
maybe this is why her daughter is pregnant, not enough parental supervision..what happens to the policies in alaska that she started with her so called maverick behavior? everyone knows without the spear head, the issue is lost..i suspect the state of alaska will lose whatever benefits she began as governor.
is this example of a strong career woman going to permeate our country? does this infer that more teenagers should have more career moms with no mom at home? maybe teens should get more personal rights at a younger age.

Where are all the liberal blogs and this so called liberal rumor-mill? The first I heard of this story was in the MSM. And I read a ton of blogs a day and never heard anything about it. Their first lie of the day. Presidident Clinton asked that his daughter be made off limits because people like Rush Limbaugh and McCain were making jokes about her lack of beauty. That makes sense. She was a child doing nothing wrong. If Chelsea were out having babies and/or doing drugs and underage drinking with with the secret service - that's another thing altogether. Discussion of this is not a personal attack on their child, it's one on the parents and our presumptive Pres and VP, because obviously they didn't do their job. Where else does this responsibility land? Teach abstinence and when that doesn't work, have babies and claim moral superiority? I'm glad she's keeping the baby, as Governor of Alaska, I'm sure her Mom will have all the resources to properly care for her daughter and granddaughter. I'm sure they won't be homeless or wanting for money. They probably won't be living in a trailer park. But I'm outraged that a so called caring mom, wants more to be VP of this country than to once again take care of her children. She thrust her family into the spotlight by accepting this nomination, and now wants to cry that people want to talk about it. And top that off by planting the story about how the liberal bloggers are telling lies and attacking her daughter. Will they do nothing, not to win?
But I am

When you base your career on criticizing the morals of others you had better be clean in your own life and household. That Palin failed to teach her daughter to abstain from underage premarital sex is noteworthy. Those who spend their lives judging others deserve to be harshly judged for their own moral failures. Perhaps Mr. Dobson is the even bigger hypocrite in this story, for minimizing the truth.

"I'm absolutely floored by the comments I read on here.

It's a shame that this has been publicized as it has."

Oh cut the phony hypocritical garbage!

This is amazingly ironic, coming from the right wing, which will stop at nothing to spread vicious lies about their opponent's personal lives. If the shoe was on the other foot, you wouldn't hesitate exploiting this one bit.

Besides, this isn't about Bristol Palin. It's about Sarah Palin and her incredibly thoughtless, wreckless, and careless attitude about exposing her daughter and the rest of her family to this kind of scrutiny. To think that something like this wouldn't have been raised in today's climate is so incredibly naive.

She's got to have one incredible ego to think that this country needs her more than her family right now.

Oh, I'm so touched that the Palins are (once again), showing how noble they are by "keeping" the child. How many more instances like this are we going to get from this family?

Family values my ass...

I think that her decision to take on the VP and possibly the President's position at this time in her life speaks volumes about her judgement and commitment to raising her family. How could someone, knowing that she has an infant baby with Down Syndrome and an unwed pregnant daughter, decide to leave them for the public spotlight?

The really laughable thing about all these "grace filled" comments by so called "evangelical leaders" like Dobson, is that if it was Barack Obama who was in the same situation they would beat him into the ground over it. They would go to great lengths to show how unfit his "family values" are to lead this country.

I wish CT would stop covering the Christian versio's of Rush Limbaugh it really is a discredit to this magazine.

I am a formal Wasilla resident. Sara was the Mayor when I left and moved to Florida. She did a good job for our small town. As Alaska's Gov she has done alot for the state of Alaska.
Now as for Bristal, who was in school with my sons, her pregancy should be off limits. What a private family matter. I am not concerned about the fact she is with child. We need to stay focussed on the matters at hand that effect all American. The war, gas prices, food costs, affordable insurance for families, the states being effected by hurricane Gustav, families losing their homes to housing market. How about that! Why go after a 17 year girl who is dealing with a life changing event in her life.
I feel this is an issue that should be left alone, let the family support thier daughter and prepare for the welcoming of a new great grandchild, grandchild and Bristal's child. This is a thing to celerbrate not knock down.
I am not voting for McCain/Palin ticket, to conservative for my taste. But I don't feel anyone from any party should use this as a smear platform. Stay focused media play fair and run a good race. Stay news worthy!

Mellissa Parsons-Wilfong

The "left-wing bloggers" are echoing sentiments of all Americans: just say NO to Sarah Palin. Any woman, having their 5th child, knows that they give birth quickly and does not give a 30 minute speech after her water breaks and then fly 11 hours to a hospital to give birth to a baby with Downs Syndrome! Cover-up and bad parenting on all levels. God help these children and shame on those who would believe and vote for her.

This is really sad. An excellent example of both McCain and Palin more concerned about themselves than this young girl. I thought it was odd that Palin's husband wasn't carrying his son at the press conference in Ohio. They staged it so their daughter who is obviously pregnant wouldn't look obvious. They have no one to blame for their bad publicity now but themselves. Its abusive and manipulative behavior.

McCain and Palin let this young girl become public fodder for days because of their personal political desires.

Their "judgment" is disastrous.

I really don't have to say anything because it's being said already, but wish to add that if Palin truly cared about her family, she would put their well-being first and not the ambition to become Vice President. That's Pride. You cannot afford to be off in Washington leading a nation of 300 million under an ailing, aging 72-year old President and also be there for your teenage daughter when she needs advice on parenting or tuck your baby in at night. It would be such an inspiring story for the history books if you could pull off both, but it is simply not something you should attempt. If I were Palin I would step down immediately from this race and focus on the people who matter most. That means family, not John McCain and his aides.

Wow, some of the Palin haters here are really amazing. I knew the left was angry -- but wow.

Dear Sara:

I am at a loss of words in terms of reaction to the comment section to this entry and the other entry concerning Bristol's pregnancy. I do not know why the news was posted on the blog. Just because an idiot bloggler believed that a). Gov. Palin faked the pregnancy of her fifth child or b). She intentionally sacrificed that child's health by not seeing the doctor soon enough when her water broke.

There is no evidence of either, just gossip. Just because Andrew Sullivan posted this on the net, does not mean that CT has to do it also. Hold yourself to a higher standard.

Folks, it is a 17 year old girl that you are ripping. Please pray for the family and leave the girl alone. Let her church minister to her and the baby's father to repentance.

Ms.Pullingham, as a suggestion, please stop accepting any additional comments. The comments are becoming an embarassment to the Body, to the faith, and to the Gospel.

Now here's some real Conservative values. Seems like Republicans are becoming more and more Liberal everyday. There's hope for mankind after all!

My younger sister had a baby at 16 less than a year ago. My parents would never allow my sister to get birth control because they think it would be a permission slip to have sex. My sister didn't need a permission slip to have sex. No teenager does. They are kids. They don't always do what they are told. What kind of a parent doesn't accept that reality and provide a backup plan for their children to prevent having sex from turning into having a baby? Parents like my parents for one. Parents like Sarah Palin.

I am a liberal. I am anti-abortion. As many many liberals, despite what you all think. I was also a foster child. I'm happy that the baby will be born and into a loving supportive family.

But I can't help but wonder what Sarah Palin is doing running for VP while her daughter is having a baby at 17 and she just had a down syndrome child half a year ago. You can maybe do that when you are Gov of Alaska, population ~600k. But not when you are the ONE who has to step in and lead the free world if a 72 year old 4 time cancer survivor becomes incapable of doing the job.

John McCain should be ashamed of himself for choosing Palin as his VP. He just subjected a 17 year old girl to the judgement of the entire planet. You think Tom Cruise and Brad Pitts babies are tabloid fever? What kind of a father would do that to any 17 year old. Obviously the family was trying to keep it quiet. That tells you a lot about John McCain. I don't know if I totally blame Palin... it would be something else to just have the VP offered to you out of the blue like it was... I imagine it was like winning the lottery. But I hope she reconsiders.

It seems I remember that God (who was a perfect father) had some problems with the choices of his first set of kids....

Godly choices on the part of the parents do not automatically result in Godly choices by the children. But keep in mind that after her sin, she (Bristol) has made righteous choices- no abortion, marrying the father. That demonstrates something about the upbringing that she has received. I have four teenage boys. I pray that they don't make the same choice that Bristol did (and we train, speak and watch to do our best to avoid this) but all four boys are their own moral agents making their own decisions. Can I guarantee their righteousness? -Of course not. Having done all I can do (and obviously not with perfection), I am I a failure as a father or a man if they do make poor choices? Only if God is too for the failure of Adam and Eve.

Having said this...there are too many responses on this page showing a lack of grace, not to mention a greater commitment to partisan politics rather than the Kingdom of God.

How can a mother, who has a Downs Syndrome baby and an unmarried pregnant daughter even think about becoming VP? All infants need bonding with their mothers especially a special needs chid. Bristol also needs to be with her mother. Whenever a parent puts her career before the needs of her children and their crisis, then she is not a true Christian. John McCain wanted Gov Palin mainly because of her family value views. What message are we sending to our young Christian women by keeping her on the ticket? At least Chelsea Clinton, with all the liberal views of her parents, did not get pregnant. Now Miss Clinton is a role model for Christian girls and young women, not Gov Palin or her daughter. Perhaps Gov. Palin needs to step back and reflect on the teachings of the Bible and try to incorporate the wisdom found there into her own life. This is what a true Christian looking for repentance would do.

I'm a Democrat and a Christian (yes it happens a lot in Athens, GA)
I have four children, my second diagnosed with autism at 18 months, Staying in constant contact with God through prayer and meditation, I always understood how important it was to stay home with my children.
Does Sarah hear a different God than I do? The first few years of a special needs child are the most important as far as future outcome. Who will be raising this baby? The same Mother who raised Bristol?
I believe all of God's people should have health insurance, not my sister, a big Republican, she told me recently, if a child a child breaks a leg and the parents are too poor or stupid to have coverage
they should be forced to watch that child suffer without care, that will teach them not to have children they can't afford. I don't understand that form of Christianity.
Democrats can be pro-life, we just don't feel that you can pass laws and expect that to change a individuals
morality...that's what they do in Iran/Iraq, we bring folks to Christ by example, not force.

Jan Finnamore,

This is what happens when pastors filter the word of the Lord to become pastor-politicians for cheap political gains.

Hypocrisy is never graceful.

Shalom.

Unbelievable, the comments here. It's worthy to note that in both politics and religion there are two kinds of people: those who define themselves according to what they love, and those who define themselves according to what they love to hate.

Sarah Palin's churches (Juneau Christian Center and Church on the Rock) indicates a desire to live within a paradigm of faith-based politics. Hence, she will be judged in this context. And lets face it, if this wasn't her beliefs, McCain wouldn't have chosen her. Politics are nasty. I feel for her daughter, but hey, we can't chose our parents. See quotes below.

Mike Rose, senior pastor at Juneau Christian Center

From a July 8, 2007 sermon: “Those that die without Christ have a horrible, horrible surprise.”

From a July 28, 2007 sermon: “Do you believe we’re in the last days? After listening to Newt Gingrich and the prime minister of Israel and a number of others at our gathering, I became convinced, and I have been convinced for some time. We are living in the last days. These are incredible times to live in.”

David Pepper, senior pastor at Church on the Rock:

From an November 25, 2007 sermon: “The purpose for the United States is… to glorify God. This nation is a Christian nation.”

From an October 28, 2007 sermon: “God will not be mocked. I don’t care what the ACLU says. God will not be mocked. I don’t care what atheists say. God will not be mocked. I don’t care what’s going on in the nation today with so much horrific rebellion and sin and things that take place. God will not be mocked. Judgment Day is coming. Where do you stand?”

From an October 28, 2007 sermon: “Just giving in a little bit is a disastrous thing…You can’t serve both man and God. It is one or the other.”

Where is the grace in that?

I think Eliot Spitzer is the father of Bristol's baby.

If the baby born in April really is Gov. Palin's, why did she board a plane for a 12 hour flight after going into labor, especially since she knew the baby would be born with Down's Syndrome? And if she is breastfeeding as she claimed, will she continue to do until the baby is a year old...as recommended by public health experts?
If the baby is her daughter's and Gov Palin and her husband simply wanted to protect their daughter from the consequences of her actions and give the child an established, secure home, it's really not such a bad thing and is a family matter...except that this would mean that Gov Palin blatantly used the situation to her political advantage to score political points with anti-abortion fundamentalists. And given the suffering her daughter must be going through right now, how can Gov Palin, in good conscience, still endorse abstinence only education for teens? And another thing...if Gov Palin truly is pro-life, why is her office filled with the hides and skeletons of innocent animals?

I am aghast at the hypocrisy of Mr. Dobson, whom I formerly admired. There are many, many things wrong with this scenario. First, a mother subjecting her unwed, pregnant teen to the intense media scrutiny that was sure to come as a VP candidate is unconscionable. She needs to be home tending to her family, not running for office. A special needs baby is born and she goes to work three days afterwards? Even if the conspiracy theorists are wrong and she is Trig's mother, what mother leaves a newborn so soon? He is likely to need special care. Babies at that age need to be held, need to be put on a routine. By her own admission, her husband was unwilling to be a primary care giver even though she campaigned for governor under that idea.

A son going to Iraq (under suspicious circumstances), a special needs baby only 5 months old, a pregnant teen -- yet this woman has time to train for marathons and be Governor and her husband trains for dog sled races? My sister runs triathlons and I can tell you serious competitive training requires hours and hours of commitment. Her husband is a champion dog sledder. Who is watching and providing guidance to these children? How did the daughter become pregnant if she was so sick, she was sent away to live with an aunt and not allowed to see anyone. And if she was so sick that she was quarantined, why was she in a car accident in December when she was supposedly too sick to leave the house? I'm not entirely convinced that the baby with Down's Syndrome is not the daughter's child also. There are too many unanswered questions.

The final point I want to make is that Sarah's language praising the daughter's decision to keep the baby strikes me as hypocritical and disingenuous. Yes, it's a wonderful choice, but it's exactly that. If she is such a prolifer, why praise the "choice" the daughter made. Up to Palin and McCain, Roe v. Wade would be overturned so the fact she talks about it in this way is bothersome to me because she's clearly benefitting from our society's ability to have this choice. Why not just say that there was no question the baby would be born?

And lastly, a teenage marriage is not a cause for celebration. I feel like a mistake was made and while having a baby is not a bad thing, a forced marriage is.

Palin murders animals for pleasure. A woman without empathy or grace or respect for Gods creatures. Doesn't sound pro-life to me. Her poor daughter - no empathy or grace there either. Five kids, one pregnant illegally and one an infant? Maybe she was out hunting! Do we want this Mommy Dearest in the White HOuse? She's quite horrible, a total embarrassment for this country but then can we be any more embarrassed after GW

Dr Dobson you strike me as very hypocritical. Sure, you're extending grace to Palin's family now but you'd be the first to hang on the noose any democrat whose family had their own skeleton. Shame on you.

I am so very very very tired of American politics. You speak the rhetoric of Christianity yet collectively endorse policies of war, killing, guns, poverty, environmental degradation and more. Just reading this column makes me weep for how you represent Christ to the world. Republicans are so very off track in your mix of politics and faith it's an embarrassment to Christians around the world.

Have you ever tried reading your bible withOUT your constitution in one hand and a gun in the other?

I am shocked that all these people who preach moral values are now saying we all make mistakes and forgiveness is the Christian way. I pass all the tests for what the religious right would consider good moral values. But I am not a Christian. I am now going to convert to Christianity so I can finally go off and have premarital sex and have a child out of wedlock. My Hindu parents will be horrified, but I can just say I am a Christian and in Christianity this is ok.

Well, the millions of obamatrons policing the internet, surely are adept at it. God Bless the Palins. God Bless America.

I think it's funny really . My husband told me the news
when I was making dinner, I didn't believe it at first.
Isn't she supposed to be for family values , and
all that ? IF that was Obamas daughter , people
would have a fit over it. Another thing is her
down syndrome baby. What kind of mother would accept
a job like this which she knows her life will be up for
public review ? Who's going to be there for the
children ?

Another example of Republicans great family values.

The terrible comments made here are appalling. I feel media and people are saying things against Palin that would never be allowed to be said about Obama. As a successful business mom, I am very offended that people saying the comments about Palin staying at home. I support Dobson. Look at your own families, I am sure things like this have happened. I don't see it as hypocritical at all. When is bringing a child into this world a terrible thing? Years ago people got married and at 17/18 and started their families. If you are a Christian, you had better wake up and start supporting McCain and Palin. If not, you are going to have JEREMMIAH WRIGTH and PUFF DADDY haning out in the white house.

Let those of us who did not commit any sexual sins during our high school years cast the first stone.

Rania, I am a Christian, at least I try to live as a Christian. Tragically, fundamentalists like James Dobson use the Christian brand to manipulate behavior, to enrich themselves, to gain political influence and control over others. Lazy reporters in turn lump all Christians in the same category. But let me tell you something... Dobson does not speak for me or for many, many other Christians. How can anyone who knows and truly believes the words of Jesus Christ support the violent, gun worshiping, hypocritical, deceitful, greedy and irresponsible Republican Party of today? And make no mistake, Palin and McCain are cut from the same cloth as G.W. Bush. They yammer on and on about family values. They want to control the way we raise our families, limit our choices to do what we feel is best for our children, they want to condemn and even jail our daughters for the decisions they make when confronted with teen pregnancy... yet Palin and McCain claim family privacy rights for themselves when their children make similar mistakes. Look at the way they have lived their lives: McCain abandoned his first wife after having many extra marital affairs; Palin proudly claims to have left her three day old Down's Syndrome infant to return to work full time. Three days old. The Republican Party is not the party of Christianity. How much longer are the rest of us going to sit by and watch them use our religion to promote such destructive, immoral aims? They are charlatans, and they are doing irreparable harm to Christianity, not to mention, our beloved country.

As a male, I belivee the fear of premarital sex hurt me a lot. It caused me to shut down my aggression and pray to God, rather than learning how to be a man. It really saddens me that folks like Dr. Dobson get out there and support this, where I believe that premarital sex promoted by Christians has hurt me so much.

Why are all these anti-Christians commenting on this website? The Democrats are the party of the Freaks! The Democrats have been in control of Congress for the past two years and our country has gone down the tubes. I can't believe any Christian would vote for a Democrat other then the fact you think you will get a government handout if Barack Hussein Obama gets in. You won't AFter reading some of these comments, it makes me realize the "dumbing down" of the American populace. Her senior in high school is preggers. It happens. Doing the right thing. Now move on to the next spin. I am a smart, educated Christian woman and really resent that people are asking why Obama isn't staying at home? Once again, sexism is okay. Go Palin! We support you and Dr. Dobson.

After listening to this statement, what kind of message does sarah palin think she's sending the average young girl? Now, you'll find that a lot of young people will think this is right, because it's right for the v p canaidate's daughter.

After listening to this statement, what kind of message does sarah palin think she's sending the average young girl? Now, you'll find that a lot of young people will think this is right, because it's right for the v p canaidate's daughter.

Wow, we Republicans go crazy when a democrat gets a hummer by an intern in the White House and lies about it, but when one of our choices is an adulterer who leaves his crippled wife after an accident and the other raised a pregnant unwed teenage daughter, it's ok. Wow...what have we become.

To anonymous...it is a big deal when you teach your daughter abstinance only and dont allow her any knowledge to protect herself against pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases which she could also pass on to her baby. Most of these comments arent from anti-christians, but are from christians who are opposed to ignorant and hypocrital people like governor Palen and Dobson...and You!

And just so you know, it was the deregulation of the mortgage industry, the $500 billion borrowed from China to pay for the Iraq War and the failure to invest in alternative fuels by the Republicans when they were in power; and the filibusters by them the last two years; and Bush's vetos that are the cause of the economic problems we face today.

Be Aware!!!

Comments along the line of "How could Sarah Palin do this to her family" and "Sarah Palin throwing her daughter under the bus" etc, etc are appearing (many times verbatim) all over blogs that might be considered as part of the conservative base.

This is an organized mass infiltration of Obama supporters trying to undercut support for McCain/Palin by posing as "concerned, family values, conservatives."

Someone wrote that the father of Bristol's baby is Elliot Spitzer. Not true. It is John Edwards! LOL!!

“I can't believe any Christian would vote for a Democrat other then the fact you think you will get a government handout if Barack Hussein Obama gets in.”

Believe it. I am Christian. I am Democrat. I am woman. I am feminist. I am a spouse. I am a mother. I am also sick of the self righteous Christian Republicans who insist on hijacking my faith and injecting it into their politics. Religion and politics have no place together. A person’s faith is supposed to be a private matter, not splattered all through government and ruling a country. Do you not see the mess the Middle Eastern countries are in because they put their religion into their government? It makes no difference if it’s Islam or Christianity, they do not belong in our government! I have no desire to shove my faith down other people’s throats. I will answer for my sins, and they will answer for theirs.

Just one question for all you Republican Anti-Choice people. You think it’s right to force other women to have babies because you don’t believe in abortions? Are you the one that’s pregnant? Why don’t you think about this… what if the people who do believe in abortions were allowed to force their views on you and order you to abort a baby you wanted to have? Put the shoe on the other foot for once and stop trying to run other people’s lives. Everyone doesn’t believe the way you do. Just worry about yourself and leave other people alone. Don’t you have enough to worry about in your own life without trying to dictate to others?

“You won't AFter reading some of these comments, it makes me realize the "dumbing down" of the American populace.”

The dumbing down of America belongs solely to the Republican Party. How can you look at and listen to your current idiot in Office, your present candidate, and most of your Senators and not see it? Oh, excuse me, because the Republican voters are just as dumb as they are.

Very few things that come out of their mouths are intelligent. It amazes me how they ever made it through college. Guess that says something about our education system, doesn’t it? Apparently they’ll pass anyone.

As for Palin, even I, as a feminist, think it’s wrong to have children and not live up to your responsibility to them as a mother. If any child ever needed to have it’s mother around, it’s a scared, pregnant teenager and a special needs baby. Sarah Palin has dumped her responsibilities to her baby on her teenage daughter who is facing having a child herself. This says a lot about Ms. Palin.

There is nothing wrong with women being in the White House and it’s way past time for them to be there. But I want one that is able to run the country if McCain dies while in Office. I want one that didn’t abandon her children when they needed her most. Hillary didn’t have a young child at home, much less four, with one of them pregnant and one a special needs child. If Palin wanted to climb the ladder in politics, then she should not have had all these children, or at least waited until they were older. If she doesn’t believe in abortion, fine. But there is such a thing as birth control. This is a selfish, immature woman, and it shows me again the level of intelligence of McCain for picking her. If he wanted to pick a woman, why did he not pick Kay Bailey Hutchison, a woman who does not have young children at home that need their mother? The office of president and VP are not your average, nine to five jobs. They require your full attention, all day, every day.

Another thing… It amazes me how you Republicans scream so loud over abortion, but yet are overjoyed whenever there’s a war. You put your little yellow ribbons and flags all over your cars and go into your self righteous mode and accuse anyone else who doesn’t agree with your beloved wars unpatriotic. Ironic, isn’t it?

Oh, and nice touch with the “Barack Hussein Obama”. Typical fear mongering from the Republicans.

GOVERNOR PALIN NOT ONLY TALKS THE TALK, BUT SHE ALSO IS WALKING THE WALK....SOMETHING THAT MOST TALKING HEADS ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH APPARENTLY. THIS, THOUGH UNFORTUNATE IS TO BE COMMENDED. SHE IS IN SYNC WITH THE PRICE OF HER VALUES.

Just curious,

Does this mean that Sarah Palin will be traveling with her pregnant daughter and her 3 month old baby on the campaign trail?

I mean, they really need her now ...

Unprotected sex in 2008 - do we know either individual's HIV status?
Do they? Do their families?

No one is going after Bristol. The issue is the judgment of both Sarah Palin and John McCain.

Let's assume that what they are saying is truthful. That Sarah knew that her 17 year old unwed daughter was pregnant, and told John McCain that before accepting the nomination for Vice President.

While the responsibility for Bristol's pregnancy lies with her, not either of the people on the Republican ticket, it's obvious to everyone that there's no way this story could have been kept quiet until after the election - which means that both Palin and McCain acted with total disregard for Bristol. Given that there are many other Republicans around the country who are at least as qualified as Palin, selecting her knowing the intense scrutiny her daughter would be put through is frankly unconscionable. Perhaps even more disturbing is the idea that Palin, knowing her daughter was pregnant and unmarried, didn't just say no to McCain when he called - to put her daughter through this so flippantly makes Palin either incredibly callous or incredibly naive, neither of which is a quality any Christian should find admirable.

Nobody in there right mind thinks that Gov Sarah Palin is able to command respect or even fear dealing with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad(Iran), Vladimir Putin(Russia), Muhammadmian Soomro(Pakistan) and Kim Yong-Il(North Korea)?
Republicans need to challenge her nomination at the convention this week. This country does not deserve to be in the hands of a Freshman Gov of a state that is only 3% the population of Florida.
As for her family values and integrity... why is her daughter always holding their newborn baby? Because Sarah Palin was using her holding the baby to hide the evidence that her daughter is pregnant. They were not planning on telling anyone until after the election because they think it undermines their chances at getting elected. Not from liberals. We don't care. They were deceiving conservatives.
Yeah. She's a great leader. She gets her own daughter to participate in lying to the American public.

The Dems are really showing their true compassion on this issue. Caught laughing at the tragedy of a hurricane and now this. The hypocrisy speaks volumes.

Well, according to Obama, Bristol can abort her baby even after she gives birth if she chooses. He does support the killing of babies that survive abortions. So lefties, there's still hope, you may yet be able to add another murdered baby to your list!

I have been discouraged that I can not yet find a commentary from a Christian leader that addresses the two reasons that most of us as Christians (whether liberal, conservative, or moderate) are upset about this whole situation, as evidenced in these many replies: The dishonesty of McCain/Palin withholding this information until it was forced to come out and the huge inconsistency of McCain/Palin in positioning Palin as a "family values" candidate and then telling us that she accepted the VP nomination when she knew that her daughter would be publicly thrown to the lions during such a vulnerable time of her life. Within the community of parents that I am part of, which includes people of faith and no faith, I can not think of any parent (man or woman) who would make such a decision. As a Christian community, we are supposed to be gentle, yes, but we are also called to be honest and wise and our leaders who are being quoted in the press are looking foolish by not addressing this situation in a relevant way.

I think we should leave the girl her privacy and not drag her into the spotlight. But I am concerned about how Palin exhibits "lovingkindness" and compassion for others as I listen to this clip where Sarah Palin laughs when a talk radio announcer calls one of her political rivals "a b**** and a cancer". The woman referred to is a cancer survivor.

The Anchorage Daily news reported this on January 25th, 2008 http://www.adn.com/opinion/story/293639.html

McCain and Palin had to know that this was going to be a media issue sooner or later (hello! someone was sure to notice that the girl was pregnant, unless she was forced to hold her baby brother every single second she was on stage at any event), and that it could not fail to hurt not only the Republican ticket (if for no other reason than by distracting from the convention and the race itself) but also the teenagers caught in the middle of this public exposure of their private life. I think is shows a lack of judgment on both the political and the personal level.

It seems to me God has a history of using deeply flawed people to accomplish great things. Abraham, Moses, David... check Hebrews 11 for the complete list. I'm not sure Governor Palin even falls onto into that category. Wonder what Bill and Hillary would have advised Chelsea had she made a similar error in teenage judgement. Seems like a lot of these commentors are living in glass houses.

Just an off-topic response to an off-topic post that the Dems are laughing about the hurricane. It was some wacko from a "Christian" organization who encouraged his supporters to "pray for rain of biblical proportions" during the DNC. After that said, and beautiful weather in Denver graced the "anti-christians", comes news of Gustav and the RNC. The Preacher has since removed his Video from YouTube etc. - But in the wake of this, how is the irony un-noticed. And no, I don't believe "God is on the Democratic Party side" (necessarily) - unlike the Preacher who asked to pray for damage and flooding, etc. because he sincerely believes God is on his side... And of course later, he admitted "It was all meant as a joke"

Matthew 7: 1-5
Judging Others
1"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
3"Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

Now let's all take a reality check and look around our own house before trying to fix someone elses.......
God Bless........

Hey Lily,

Whu? Could you be a little more General?

I am repulsed by the comments in this post. These are not Christians.

I agree with GWH. The issue is the judgment of both Sarah Palin and John McCain. It seems there are a lot of you ready to judge. Are you really as disappointed in them as you seem, I wonder?

Professing Christians: I humbly suggest you take some time off from blogging to read your bibles.

This what happens when we christians think that God has picked a political party to do His will. I don't know why there is such a need for us "evangelicals" to form a group and support a politician. Both sides are flawed & both sides have Bible-believing christians.

If you believe that McCain new all about this lady before he picked her, then either you are naive or McCain is !!

Is there a perfect family? I think we need to remember no matter who it is running for office...I could name several in both parties that have made less than desirable choices...we are less than perfect people and yes we all make mistakes as do our children no matter what the faith is. If we are looking for perfection we won't find it in any party or people.

I'm tired of the religious wars and the bickering. Organized religion is intolerant, unloving, anti-intellectual, and has little or nothing to do with being missional or setting an example to the rest of the world!

OK, I'm shocked! I thought those who support Sen. Obama didn't cast stones. Weren't we told "A change! A new hope! I'm a uniter!" This is worse than the "same 'ol, same 'ol."

Haven't done it before, but I'm getting out my checkbook for the RNC--the uttter lack of sense and sensibility of some of these responses is not only appalling, we need to get a better message out there.
Palin family, God's richest blessings to you!

The harshness of these posts from other Christians are one of the reasons I don't go to church anymore and THE reason why the next book I'm going to read is "I'm OK with God, it's Christians I can't stand". I guess I'm not good enough to go to church with any of you. You're just too perfect, and I'm.....not. Thank God - literally - that He accepts me as I am and makes Himself available to continue to transform me, day by day.

I am shocked at the vitriol I have read in these comments; I can not believe the judgmental, self righteousness of most of them. I thought this was a Christian website. It has either been invaded by the left wing or its readers are the worst kinds of Christian witness and I hope start to read their Bibles. Sarah Palin is walking in the sinful world in Godly step. Apostasy is alive in this column of responses

Martin Luther King advocated love and tolerance even in the face of attacks and scorn so that, once the racists in this country rid themselves of their hatred, we can all live together as one. I commend the integrity and the courage of this blog moderator in sharing all the emails that have been forthcoming. It clearly demonstrates the hate and bitterness that is dwelling within so many of us. I thank God for the integrity and courage of both Senator McCain and Governor Palin in standing true to their calling to serve, despite the fact that real life in their family presents challenges, and real life around them evokes such expressions of hatred as evidenced in so many of the sharings here on this blog and in the media. I commend the compassion of Senator Obama in his call to Americans to stick to the issues of the offices sought, and honor and respect the families, and especially the children, of those seeking office.

A wise person once said: "You can keep your mouth shut, and people may think you are stupid. Or, you can open it, and prove it." Another wise person complemented those words of wisdom with a thought we might all keep in mind: "When a stupid person says something stupid, it is because they have nothing worthwhile to say."

Tacitus

When you say these posts are from other Christians, you like many others are sadly mistaken and have a fundamental misunderstanding of the term. Much of what I have seen posted here borders on evil.
Is is obvious that Sen McCain made the right choice, given the outcry and horrible coverage in the so-called mainstream media. It is sad to see folks who claim to identify themselves as Chriatian jump on the fingerpointing bandwagon and play "gotcha" games like the heathen do.
Dr Dobsons comments are biblically sound and should be taken to heart, though it appears that many who have posted here have hearts too hard to understand them.

There's no double-standard between Dobson's response to Palin and his response to Clinton. Palin's daughter got pregnant, and she's dealing with it. Clinton lied, committed perjury, and refused to deal with his mess. By the way, this is about Gov. Palin's DAUGHTER. What did Palin do to be criticized?

There's no double-standard between Dobson's response to Palin and his response to Clinton. Palin's daughter got pregnant, and she's dealing with it. Clinton lied, committed perjury, and refused to deal with his mess. By the way, this is about Gov. Palin's DAUGHTER. What did Palin do to be criticized?

Question: When is a baby not a blessing?
Answer: When the Family Values political power.

Shame on John McCain and the Palins for thrusting their underage daughter into the national spotlight for political gain. Is this what it means to 'energize the base'? This represents the darkest of character, and is not the fault of leftist bloggers. As one of the base they were counting on, consider it a vote lost. Go home to your family Mrs. Palin.

Dobson's response to Clinton was a different issue. Clinton lied to congress and the American people. Gov. Palin did not have sex with anyone, she is simply dealing, correctly, with a difficult situation her daughter got into. Why not just admit that you're going to hate ANYTHING Dobson says.

You know, this whole incident illustrates perfectly why choosing candidates based on anything besides qualifications and competency for the job at hand is just plain stupid.

Both parties need to sit down, stop allowing themselves to be defined by extremists and special interest groups, clearly define themselves to the nation, and choose candidates who embody that definition. Period. Full stop. End of story.

By the same token, voters need to grow up and stop using whatever pet social agenda is dearest to their selfish little hearts and start voting on issues that affect the nation as a whole with the best interests of the nation at heart.

So this poor girl is pregnant at 17. Jeez, a teenager making a bad choice...a teenager thinking "it'll never happen to me"...a teenager embarrassing her parents...that's never happened before in the history of the world, right...? C'mon. Every single parent here is going to have a teenager or young adult child who gets him or her self into a big ol' mess of trouble and it's going to break our hearts, and we're going to do our darndest to get them through it and help them learn from it and be better people in the end. So lay off the Palins on this count. Stick with her record as a public official. That's the only thing that matters here.

I am constantly amazed how some Christians just don't get it. Here you have the prototype of an All-American Evangelical Christian family, and the 17 year old unwed high-school daughter gets pregnant. If "abstinence only" doesn't work for Bristol Palin, who is it ever going to work for? And if it does not, is it not criminally negligent not to teach our kids about contraception? The Palins are doing the right thing about this situation, but it's the policies of folks like Sarah Palin that get us to this situation in the first place.

First off, I don't think these are all authentic Christians posting comments on this board. They probably found it off Google or something.

But if they ARE genuine Christ-followers, I must say like some of the others on here said that I am shocked and appalled at the harsh responses! I am an evangelical Christian and I agree with the quotes from Dr. Dobson & the others in this post. They're NOT condoning sex! Being a Christian doesn't mean you'll be sinless; it means you should SIN LESS because you know better & b/c you want to glorify God with your life. I for one am so grateful for God's grace b/c I am so undeserving of His forgiveness myself. My parents never really talked to my siblings & me about sex or relationships--they still don't really & I'm 23 and my siblings are in college. We were raised knowing that we should wait to have sex until we're married & I do want to wait with all my heart b/c I know it's what's best for me & b/c that's God's plan.

But last year I learned that when my sister was 16, she had sex with her boyfriend. She never told me this (& I doubt my parents know) but I found out from my boyfriend who found out from the guy (who happens to be my friend & a member of our church as well). I was emotionally distraught over this, just grieving her sin for her, but I've found myself in situations where my boyfriend & I could have easily had sex (& have even come close to it). I'm not proud of this & we're both trying with God's help to overcome our sexual temptations until if it's God's will that we marry each other.

I know I'm not the only one who has struggled with sexual sin. We're all human & we all make mistakes. Grace & mercy are a gift that you only truly understand when you realize how unworthy you are of something (like forgiveness for repeated disobedience to God, as I am guilty of this). We shouldn't judge Sarah Palin for her daughter's mistake. Sure, she could have been around more maybe but parents can't be watching their children all the time--especially if they're teenagers! A song I like says, "The beauty of grace is that it makes life not fair."

If we were to be punished justly for everything we did wrong, none of us would be here today. We all deserve death for our sins. Think about if you were in the Palins' situation right now. I'm sure if we were in that position we would all want a little grace too. If you can't give that, then just keep your mouth shut & let God take care of this.

It's more than just "abstinence only"--it's teaching children & young adults that it's not just about not having sex. It's about living a life that glorifies God. God created sex for marriage between an man and a woman b/c through sex they become "one flesh" and reflect the image of God (as we're all--male and female--made in God's image). In fact, throughout the Bible, marriage imagery is often used to show the relationship between Christ and the Church. So we should be teaching our children to wait to have sex because when you have sex you're giving yourself fully and essentially committing yourself to that person. It's not what the media & society is teaching us today. We're diminishing the value of this precious gift God gave us. The Palins are doing the right thing. They may not be the perfect family -- but what family is? At least they're living out their faith.

It always interests me how liberal thinkers tend to perceive that Christian values are foistered upon them- when really it is just the opposite. Family values and JudeoChristian beliefs are constantly under attack. The "Christian" political view is more of a reactive response in order to be able to preserve certain principles. If there were not so many activists with there own points of view and rationalizations to normalize whatever they want to do or be by political and legal means, there would be a lot less acrimony and less misunderstanding of points of view.
And what sham reactions I am reading. Just angry people who have some beef with somebody who they feel has let them down- so they generalize those feelings to include all people with a particular set of values different than their own.
It is sad when we have to judge everyone by one or two people who may have judged us in the past. We never like to think that we are "bad" or wrong or be put down or be considered less because of what we think or who we are. Christianity does not do that. Christianity is a relationship with the person of Christ. The Words of Christ are loving and full of life but there is the standard that all are sinners and need saving grace offered by him. Some do not like that point of view and prefer to think of themselves as righteous and as good as the next person. And they are. However, none of that reaches the level that a holy God requires. That is the reason we need a Savior.
Shame on hypocrites. But not everyone who makes a mistake is a hypocrite. Hypocrasy will be measured by the manner of a person's life, not just an incident in that life. It is measured by persistence of a life style and the consistency of a conviction or belief not by a human wandering or a "mistake" or a error or a slip.
Those who are so harsh on those in these situations are gulity of what they accuse the "Christian" of being. They have become their own standard to measure a person and to pass judgment.
It is strange and shameful how some of these writers seem to take solace in their moral fraility and will not allow it in others who are inadequate but are attempting to acheive, however imperfectly, a moral view that promotes good character and behavior.

I am a Christian but I am smart enough to take James Dobson and his organization with a grain of salt. Hypocritical. Judgmental. Hate Group. This is Dobson.

Dobson does not represent Christians. The media makes it seem this way but he doesn't. Mr. Dobson represents a small group of political hate mongers.

It sickens me that so many in our world think Mr. Dobson represents Christianity. In fact, he represents so much NOT Christian.

To the world: Please don’t judge Christians as a group by the Dobson’s of the world.

Bill, I could not disagree with you more. You do not speak for all Christians and I, as one of those Christians who has benefited GREATLY by Focus On The Family's ministry to my own family's needs, reject outright your unfair, judgemental OPINION of Dr. Dobson. Tend to that two-by-four in your own eye, sir.

I'm euphoric watching the Christian gnashing-of-teeth over the implosion of the Republican Party. The Republicans will have most likely eight years to develop a candidate who can fend off Dobson Inc. Keep religion out of politics.

WOW! I've always been the one to defend Christians on the charges that we are the most vicious and judgemental people on the face of the earth. I've rebutted those statements by statinng that we are indeed the most forgiving and understanding people on earth! So, I'm really surprised at some of the venom being spewed here. I suspect that some of the posts here are Obama supporters disguised as Christians, but my instincts also tell me that most are Christians. As one who has followed Christ for a long time, that makes me a little concerned. While it may be fair game to question Gov. Palin's judgement in accepting this spot as VP running mate, none of us can say that, because she believes in abstinence, she did not teach and educate her daughter about sex. My own mother - the most conservative Christian I know - taught absolute abstinence, but she also educated us thoroughly about sex and protective measures. Still, one of my siblings decided (perhaps in a moment of passion) to do otherwise, resulting in a pregnancy outside of marriage at a young age!

Christians, we must watch our attitudes toward others! If you don't want to vote for this ticket, that's your business. But to act as if good parenting will always result in perfect children is naive and rediculous. Also, because you chose to stay home with your children, it is unfair to demand that Gov. Palin follow your path. We dont know how she cares for her children, nor do we know who assists her in their care. And because Gov. Palin chose to be supportive of her daughter doesnt make her a hypocrit, just a loving mother who had to decide how to behave toward a daughter who finds herself in a position she probably regrets. As for the husband's arrest record years ago, give me a break!! How many times have we done things that, if we had been discovered, would have resulted in pretty bad press among those who know us?

While she may not be the perfect choice for job of VP, Christians, we must stop insisting on perfection. Remember, a few months ago a lot of us were threatening to not vote for McCain because he was not conservative enough. Now, he has chosen a very conservative partner for his ticket, and we're tearing her apart. If you want to vote for a liberal (Obama) this time, then do that, but don't do it in the name of "virtue". This nation has a lot to lose. Look around you at where our nation is headed.

I am an African American Democrat, but because I see where the liberals want to take this country in the selection of judges that will follow their liberal agenda (same sex marriage, more abortions, more taxes, more exposure of our children to things that will lead them farther from God, etc.(I live in California, so I know the agenda!) I'm willing to chose a more conservative, less than perfect leader in order to at least stem the tide and slow down our downward spiral toward God only knows where.

Let's pray more, and say less. Prayer and grace are always in order for the Christian. Then, cast your vote as you please.

The father of Bristol's baby has a MySpace page full of the "F" word. He does not sound very Christian to me.

Please Ms. Palin, do us all a favor and withdraw from the race. You are needed at home, obviously.

Whoa!! The vitriol and hatred is spewing here. Truth always has that effect on darkness. That rats are scurrying for cover and use their anger to hide behind. Maybe they will actually read more articles in this mag and find some real "hope" and "change."

Actually, from the media description of Levi Johnston, the father, he sounds like a pretty good kid, an athlete, an outdoorsman, a real Western kinda guy. If that's the kind of guy that the Palin's allow their daughter to go out with, I would be more likely to vote for them than if he was in the church choir and did volunteer work every weekend. If you think a myspace full of profanities is unusual you should check out your kid's and their friends' pages, I think you'd be surprised. I think the hypocrisy here is not Bristol Palin's, it's first Sarah Palin, who wants to keep knowledge on how to avoid pregnancy from teenagers that need it, and second on the Republican Christian leaders, who are very selective in who they show "grace" to. I really doubt if this was a Democrat VP selection James Dobson would be so forgiving, we would hear at length on how this is the result of liberal secular values imparted by the teenager's liberal secular parents and just one more reason we can't trust the Democrats to run anything. It's only because she's the daughter of the Republican nominee for VP that all this sympathy is shown.

It is interesting to read the comments. People who claim to be Christian attempt to judge another person's motives. The negativity towards Dr. Dobson who reflects a servant of God who tries to follow God's Word is totally UNCHRISTIAN! It is surprising to see these people claim to know the Lord and the Bible. Jesus made it very clear we are not to judge a person's motives. We don't where their heart happens to be. Those who posit this type message reflect the fact that they are not living close to the Lord. They don't feel a sense of forgiveness that Christ indicated was imperative for a person living in God's will. They haven't submitted themselves to the Lord and indicate this in the words I have read.

Don't try to judge Governor Palin's dealing with her daughter. Even parents at home all the time have issues where their children or even themselves don't live up to God's standard. We are all sinners! Can we help our family, yes. The pressures outside of the home are very powerful. Many of the people I work with are prisoners who have been overcome by Satan or the flesh to take drugs or alcohol. Some have had very loving Christian families. Their parents guided them but the influence of the world or desires overcame them.

Christ's advice is needed. "Judge not that you be not judged"

Sarah - and Bristol are shames for Christians.

Forcing the kid to marry another teenager will make God mad.

She should not have had sex before marriage and deserve life punishment.

If he followed "Judge not, that you be not judged" James Dobson would be out of business...

Who among us is free from sin?

It's astonishing to see so many others judging us to not be Christians. WE ARE CHRISTIANS - we're just tired of being used as a political wedge. It's a political point being made by Mr. McCain for political gain, knowing full well, this girl's situation, and hoping that it would fuel a cultural divide and "energize" what he considers his base. It may work on the far right, but the the majority of we Christians should be rightly weary of such POLITICAL manipulation. The press and bloggers will be blamed for exposing and/or exploiting this situation but Mr. McCain was among the few who knew all the facts beforehand and proceeded anyway. He can't believably tout experience, advocate restraint and pretend to be this naive. That's a character issue - it's an issue of honor, and it doesn't reflect what I want in my President.

As for Mrs. Palin, perhaps she was just naive enough to go along because she was blinded by such rapid acension to a place of such enormous power. I commend her for balancing her family, spiritual life and ambitions, but clearly this is not a time to place those ambitions first - her family needs her more than the country does. She'll be back - wiser next time. And leary herself of those who would sell her life and her family as political feed.

I AM A FATHER of 2 daughters, I am floored by this. I do not know yet how to process it. In a way, I think Palin should withdraw. But it is my pride that makes me think this. In pride, I think we are better than what we see playing out before us!!!

So, all you people talking down on Palin, realize that you are casting stones because you are blinded by pride. Stop sinning. Repent. Or maybe you are not Christians afterall... just political activists working for the liberal side.

If you ARE Christian, what... you think God cannot make something good of this... as he has done & is doing with all of us?!?

Lord have mercy on us.

If Sarah Palin was thinking only of her own political ambitions, she could have chosen to be the parent Senator Obama has elected to be, who said if one of his daughters were to 'make a mistake' and get pregnant, he would not want them "punished" by having a baby. It is the pro-abortionist who is among the most selfish, considering death as the answer to his or her social challenges.

The hateful comments of those attacking Bristol and her family are inhuman - which does not surprise me, since those who are pro-abortion think nothing about destroying voiceless, choiceless human life when it is most vulnerable and defenseless, in the womb - so why wouldn't they brutally attack and sacrifice the emotional life of a 17 year old on the altar of their own political agenda?

Pray for the Palins.

And pray for the enemies of those unborn children who are created in God's image - they have no idea what they are doing.

The more I listen the stunning comments on this issue, the more I realize this election is not about Iraq or the economy - it is for the very soul of our Nation.

We don't know if McCain or Palin are just doing this on a "power trip" for sure. Yes, McCain's choice is strategic & of course it's for his own personal gain--it kind of has to be if he's trying to win the White House. Who wouldn't do something like that in his position? I'm not going to judge whether or not he made the right choice for VP, but I do think we need to examine ourselves before we go criticizing others. I'm guilty of not doing that, but I know that I need to try to be less critical. I would hate to be in McCain or Palin's position but God gave them gifts & talents & the ability to take the heat & be in the spotlight for a reason. No matter what the outcome of this election will be, God can use it for His good purposes. He doesn't need us--we need Him.

Gideon's comment: Unfortunately, Sarah Palin's actions do not vicariously apply to her daughter's pregnancy. Had she recommended an abortion, and she did not, you would have a point.

Actually, this makes me more likely to vote for the Repubs than before. It's nice to see somebody real from a real family on a national ticket, instead of an Admiral's son married to a multi-millionaire, someone from Columbia and Harvard law school, or a guy that's been in the Senate for 30+ years.

That said, the hyprocrisy on this site is rank. I really wonder how many times the Bible verses about "judge not lest ye be judged" and "let he without sin cast the first stone" were thrown around CT's pages when Bill Clinton and John Edwards got caught with their hands in the cookie jar! Somehow Republicans engender sympathy and prayer requests but Democrats are just scum.

Palin's daughter's pregnancy is a private matter that has been scrutinized by both Christians and non-Christians. The commenters on this blog show me one thing - the Christian Church is not yet without spot or wrinkle. Get the plank out of your own eye, Christians, before you throw stones at Dobson or Sarah Palin. Apparently Christians don't know the Gospel or aren't following in Jesus' path. I pray God convicts you.

I had a child when I was 17 and my mother put me and my child first and I am eternally grateful. She helped me to finish school and college so that I could support myself and my child. I was never pressured to marry the child's father, but I was encouraged to finish my education. Sarah Palin should put her children first and she's not; just because Bristol had sex and is having a child does not mean she is now ready to be both a mother and a wife. How will this situation work? Will Sarah be in Washington and her 17 y.o. daughter be keeping house in Alaska with Levi? How will Sarah logistically help her? I don't get it and I have been in this situation. As a mother, I have never and would never put my career or politics ahead of the interests of my child(ren). I just don't get it.

Many of these posts make the assumption that Bristol is ashamed of being pregnant - or upset by it. In fact, unmarried teenage pregnancy is fashionable with today's youth - so to prejudge Sarah Palin as unfeeling about her daughter Bristol's emotions about being pregnant may be incorrect. The Palins say they are proud of their daughter and that is wonderful.
What has a lot of evangelical Christians excited is that for years Dobson has advocated that we put our families first. And yet he rabidly endorses a woman who clearly puts "Country First."
I am 'old-fashioned' in the sense that I believe that if God gives you the responsibility of a family - you should fulfill that responsibilty to your maximum. Having a special needs baby in addition to other children is a huge task for someone who wants to break the glass ceiling and be president. As an American in a difficult world, I'd like to have a president who can concentrate on the country. Yes, it is true. "You can do it all." But, you can't do it all WELL.

Christians should be thankful to be living in the USA where even a mother of five kids can be one of the leaders of the land. They quietly take their vote for these leaders into the privacy of their own election booth that countless citizens before them have payed dearly for. We hope to find on our ballots people like us with the same ideas for good government and values we hope to leave for our children. Too often all we see there are career politicians who got there by promising things we know they can not deliver or worse yet delivering pork our kids will have to pay for. America wants to change back to the simpler time when farmers, business folks and factory workers ran the country for a short term and then went back to being normal citizens. Funny when we get a lady with tremendous capacity, who is not another lawyer from the Ivy League, willing to do this... some of us object vehemently. How could she do this to her poor disfunctional family...as though there were any "normal" families today. Yes the blogs and media will tear apart the dis functionalities and any political incorrectness.
It is obvious many of CT readers are highly critical...of even Jesus himself I think. Christians are easy targets of smart pundits as was Christ himself. Our answers don't make since to worldly logic as they are spiritually discerned. I don't know if Sarah Palin would make a good VP or President. I suspect that she might if for no other reason than she seems to be very real and professes to want to govern with a servants heart. Too bad she may wither from all the fire before she even gets a chance. Oboma was smart telling his folks to back off. He knew he could be the real saint as media and blogs like yours would do the dirty deed for him.

Obama chose to take the 'high road' regarding Palins family situation. We need to concentrate on the very real and concerning issues that face our nation. Obama shows a lot of class as he refrains from getting involved in this messy discussion.

Republicans have staked so much on the "family-values" discussion that we are having a terrible time getting around what is an obvious clash of faith issues vs. the glory of political power.

Dr. Dobson also faced his own troubles when raising his son, Ryan. So he knows what it's like & yet everything worked out in the end.

These posts are astounding. They prove very conservative Christians cannot separate moral beliefs from judging others, just like we see in most conservative churches sadly. On the other hand the liberal attacks on political conservatives are expected, given the reverse. Bottom line:

1. Sarah can be a godly mother and grandmother and become a good VP. (Time alone will tell us this and God alone will finally judge!) For you rabid conservatives who attack Gov. Palin please provide the biblical proof to the contrary, other than a few proof texts commonly used to support your notions of patriarchal headship.

2. The whole "family" matter is not national news and to suggest McCain is "using" Gov. Palin is about his motives. Do you really know his motives? Must everything be raw politics on both sides? I do agree that many of the same big-name conservatives would shred Obama for the same scenario, thus there is clear duplicity here on the part of these evangelical leaders.

3. Who really care what James Dobson thinks anyway? He will influence my vote not at all. This is the same guy who told us who was saved and not saved in the primaries and hated McCain.

Evangelicals are almost totally clueless about faith and public policy and thus engage in raw politics to their own demise in mission.

I will watch the Palin family and pray for them. I will not judge Sarah's choice to run. I will also not engage in the character attacks on Obama. Oddly, I think this is closer to what I read in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 but most evangelicals I know are so sure they are right about almost everything that our lack of humility in general keeps us from meaningful presence in the culture.

I can't wait till this election is over. I wonder how much time we have wasted while our mission goes unnoticed or hated? How many Christians will die in Sudan and believers be imprisoned in China while we are talking about this stuff on the Internet? We have entirely too much time if this is our life.

I am a Christian with a 16-year-old daughter and a 25-year-old married son who cannot appreciate the love and support I have for them. It is only by the power of the Holy Spirit that I haven't gone ballistic on them. Still, I won't encourage other parents to harm their disobedient children. Nor would I encourage children to disobey their parents. As Christians, we are obligated to stand on the Word of God, teach the truth and leave the consequences to Him. May the peace of God rest upon us all. --

I am sad about the shameful attacks that some of the self righteous hypocrites in the Christian community are waging at 17 year old Bristol and her mother. I have yet to hear anyone state if Sarah discussed the possibility of joining the Republican ticket and the likeliness of the media showcasing Bristol's pregnancy.
I applaud the Palin family for standing behind Sarah and her decision to run for Vice President.
Have my Christian brothers forgotten about mercy and grace that our Father has taught us about? It is time for some serious self examination here. Let those among you without sin cast the first stone.

Mrs Palin's daughter has ignored her parents advice on pre-marital relationships. So did mine. That doesn't mean I don't continue to love her and try to help her through the challenges. Does that make me a bad parent ? Like Palin, I will not countenance termination. Who hasn't made major mistakes. Who hasn't dabbled in something they knew better than to dabble in. Mr McCain isn't perfect and as a Christian Mrs Palin knows she is not perfect ... just forgiven. Jesus Christ is compassionate. He forgives sin, knowing His children will probably go there again. It appears that some supposed Christians don't come to terms with that. As somebody has already quoted ... Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.
A White House with some Christian influence is better than a White House with none. Think about it.

Shame on you Dr.Dobson. What was your response to one of your staff members, Stuart Shepherd asking the FOF's subscribers and listeners to "Pray For Rain" of Biblical Porportions on the day that Barach Obama was to give his acceptance speach at the DNC? Is that Christ-Like?

Also was there any response from you when the Media addressed Michelle Obama as "Obama's Baby Momma".?

By the way..Who is Bristol's Baby Daddy?
We need not worry about who will take care of Palin's children..The Vice Nanny, who will truly have her hands full.

America..don't you see how ridiculos all this is. What happened to the critical issues that we all are facing? Education, Healthcare,Jobs, the Economy,Energy. Our country has become morally, spiritually, economically corrupt and is in need of healing. It has been bamboozled into believing that everything and anything is all right and ok. Look what is on the tv..yeah I know If I don't like it I can either turn it off or change the channel..but does that still make it right.?
Christian Parents, non Christian Parents talk to your children about sex. Talk to them about what the ramifications of having pre-marital sex, unprotected sex, STD's and HIV/AIDS. Alaska is ranks second nationally for the last 8 and 1 half years in Clamydia (an STD) cases. You've got to teach more than abstinence only ..Explain to them what sex is, what God intended it to be This is not a Private Matter..It has to be and needs to be addressed. Educated your children, educate yourselves. Bristol is not the only teenager, nor will she be the last one to get pregnant.
The word of God tells us that the people perish for lack of knowledge.

Read 2Chronicles 7:14

To God Be the Glory!

Reading through this shows me the most difficult for us to do is forgive!
I try to do this day in and day out.
I think of Jesus on that cross and asking forgiveness for his tormentors.
Can we do any less!
Let he who is perfect step forward!

A White House with some Christian influence is better than a White House with none. Think about it.

In what way does McCain have more "Christian Influence" than Obama?

I mean, this whole idea that the Republicans are the Christian party is ludicrous. Jesus spent his life talking about turning the other cheek and helping the poor, and the Republicans are all about war and helping the rich.

In what way does McCain have more "Christian Influence" than Obama?
The word used was 'some'... not 'more'.
The discussion was around Mrs Palin ... not Mr McCain nor Mr Obama.
So if you want it spelled out, Mrs Palin would be 'some' Christian influence.

Bill Clinton WAS the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES and LIED consistently about his indiscretions. He also (in my opinion) USED a beautiful young woman for his pleasure only - and then spit her out when caught - ever been the target of power advantage???
Bristol is AGE 17 - THE NEW 27, and only one of 7 in a family who has agreed to make massive changes in their lives to serve our country. I, too, had a 17-year-old daughter become pregnant out of wedlock and the way our family was treated by the evangelical community was disgraceful - and ironically, many of them found themselves in the same situation a year later! From my personal experience I would be very hesitant for Bristol to marry at this age and then take an enormous chance on divorce later - creating futher difficult circumstances. I say leave the children alone - who knows what is going on the lives of the Bush daughters now??? Anyone know if they're married? What are they doing? This is purely political garbage designed to take the attention off the RNC this week - God knows however unnecessary. And BTW, how many of the above authors has had a ticket for alchol, or was just lucky you didn't get caught???

I agree with all of the commenters here that mentioned "What if this were a Democrat with a pregnant 17 yr old daughter?" Dobson's words wouldn't be so forgiving.

I also applaud all of the believers that have the sense to know how the real world actually works. You can't pray your way out of having sex... it's a natural process, one that requires more teaching to teens than just making a promise not to have sex. Abstinence is good, but you need to know how to use protection when the hormones kick in and all the memorized bible verses aren't helping.

And to all of those that are still supporting Palin through all this, show you are not being hypocritical and one-sided and show the same support for a Democrat when/if this happens. Dobson won't, but the rest of you professing to be loving Chrisians should.

The commenter implied that a Democratic White House would have "none," which is an out-and-out lie. Obama is the most religiously Christian presidential candidate since Carter.

Suck it up my conservative Republican fundamentalist friends... It's the pop-culture of reality show America and you're IT. If your party nominates someone to pander to the Christian right and women who only wanted Hillary because she is a woman you can expect the candidate to be exploited because that's what makes CNN run and puts the big bucks in Dobson's bank account. Forgive me if I am not surprised that Sara Palin was chosen to be McCain's running mate or that her feet are made of clay. As a retired working mother I personally think that she has made an unwise decision to run for VP. IMHO her family needs her full time attention. She will have to live with the very public personal consequences.

Like all of you who read CT I know that I am a sinner saved by Jesus on the cross. I know that I receive God's Grace every day. I also believe education, health care, clean air and water, decent shelter and food are the right of every human being on this earth. I believe that abortion is a terrible choice but I believe that it is a choice. God loves all persons including those who die as the result of unjust behavior of others....aborted babies, victims of domestic violence, Iraqi civilians, our soldiers, doctors who perform abortions and sinners. I openly support the Obama-Biden ticket because I believe we need a major change in Washington and because they are both intelligent, honest, skilled and propose solutions I favor.

For months I have quietly deleted, without comment, the emails sent to me by a few conservative friends who are openly Republican and fundamentalist, Bible literalists. All of these "did you know the truth" emails have contained outrageous innuendo and lies about B. Obama's name, faith, parentage, and race. The same friends send anti immigrant and anti African American set pieces. I have noticed a pattern of fear of "others". When the midwest was having floods I was told by these people to compare them (white people of Iowa and Wisconsin) and their courage to the shiftless whining people of New Orleans after Katrina. At a recent picnic the dj told a "joke" which renamed Obama, Sambo. For eight years our great country has endured the use of Christianity to further what I consider the racist, warmongering big business interests of the neo-cons. Wrapped in the flag or preached from the pulpit...It's all about power and control. The Devil is at work. I am not pleased or laughing at the plight of the Palin family but I admit that after eight years of self righteous BS and pseudo Christian spin from Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rove, I find it ironic. Until we look for the face of Christ in our enemy's face, pray for our enemies and feed and clothe our enemies we are all walking a dangerous path. I will pray for the Palin family but I will vote for Obama-Biden in Nov.

Look behind the scenes.
McCain and Biden are professional longtime politicans.
Obama is a remake of the Clinton election model.
Palin is a cross section of America.
No matter how much Obama wants to be what Palin is he can't!
Political strategy would dictate that yoou now try to separate the problem.
This would be a terrible loss.
This is what is going on - plain and simple.
The media is really showing it's colors.
The vindictive part of the left will come to the surface.
Standy and watch.
Blessings

ALL we like sheep have gone astray .... Almighty God, have mercy on us all!

Palin is the best thing I've seen in politics since Reagan. I don't give a hoot about her daughter's pregnancy. Just makes her more like the rest of us. As does the other aspects of her family such as the DUI. This isn't about finding the best Christian woman; it is about winning an election. Go Sarah!

It seems there are some very ungracious people commenting on this young lady. The bottom line is that it is irrelevant to the mother's campaign; the daughter isn't running. The mother didn't help the girl get pregnant, she helped her afterwards.

I cannot believe the self-righteous comments such as "....an embarrasment to evangelicals.." No,YOU are an embarrassment to all of us, NOT just evangelicals.

The ignorance, arrogance, and shameful hypocrisy exhibited by Bill Vogt in an interview above, show us how much we all have to do to bring us up to the level of Jesus when he said to the prositute, "..go and sin no more".

Bristol is a child. Thousands of children make this mistake. In fact, it is not even looked down on in this decadent society anymore. Hypocritical HOLLYWOOD, who will see to it that this becomes a political "football", participates in this kind of behavior on a regular basis.

Take notice of what even Billy Graham's son was like before he got truly converted. There are preachers who were once drunks and alcoholics. When I was a teenager I heard a "Youth for Christ" speaker who was a preacher who had been in prison. What kind of a person would say "she should have life punishment, as Bill Vogt did. Should we send the ex-con preacher back to prison. Would that make you happy Mr. Vogt?

And the comments on Sarah's husband getting a DUI. That was over 22 years ago; that makes him a very young man. How many of us did something like that when we were so very young?

And the silly comment about Bill Clinton by Sarah Pulliam, above. Clinton was President of the U.S. He LIED to the people. He committed adultery, or at least a sexual sin, in the White House. The charge against Clinton was political; he was guilty of not only sexual sin, but of a sin against the people of the U.S. Sarah Palin is not guilty of anything. Sarah Palin is running for office, not her daughter or her husband.

I think the evangelicals had better clean up their own act before judging others. Evangelicals are not popular in this country anymore. It is not because they are Christians, it is because of the way they judge (unrighteously) everyone else. It is because of their behavior, not their beliefs. Many evangelicals are not only self-righteous in judgement of other evangelicals who make mistakes, they are harsh in their self-righteous judgement of all others who don't think or believe quite the way they do. The Christian churches of most denominations are experiencing a declining membership across the country and they had better clean up their act and start treating others the way Christ taught or evangelicals will become a small minority in this country, hated by the rest of the population. It is already headed in that direction.

If those of us who believe in morality and Christian teachings don't all get together, no matter what our religious beliefs, and fight the attempted takeover of this country by Hollywood and the homosexuals we will lose everything we have today. Barack Obama is a puppet of Hollywood; a publicity stunt of the first caliber, made up by Hollywood and the left-wing press. I'm not saying Obama is a bad person. I'm saying he is being "packaged" and publicized by a an amoral group of Hollywood film makers who are far worse than Obama is, and who want to "buy" this country. If we destroy our own political base by self-righteously judging the best candidate we probably could have at this time, and destroy our own selves, and a fine candidate like Sarah Palin, then we deserve whatever happens, and from reading some of the ugly comments here we just might get what we "deserve".

Nicely said M Lewis. I am a Christian woman who has been depressed over what has happened to our country in the last 8 years. I want peace for our country. My gut tells me Obama-Biden ticket has the better chance than the McCain-Palin ticket. To say that Chrisitan's should vote a certain way(only republican) is ridiculous. When did that become law?

I don't know about the Palins. But I know about the people who are commenting on this. There is OUTRAGE at the DUI from 22 years ago. And OUTRAGE at Dobson for being forgiving.

I'm not pleased with the Palin story. But I'm appaled at the comments on this blog.

The comments on this blog only serve to prove why a watching world looks at Christianity and can't figure out what the big deal is. Name calling, slander, mean spirited, back stabbing, judgemental, finger pointing, hopeless, and on and on. Why would anyone submit themselves to such junk, just to wear the nametag, when it is so abundant everywhere else? And, without as many stings attached. Forgive us, Jesus. We neither know you, understand your teachings, or have the guts to live it. Sad.

Having read through all the posts to date, I am sad and glad at the same time that so many viewpoints have been expressed. To MWR who is pleading for us to be forgiving, I say, "Yes, forgive, but don't abandon critical thinking." For those who are saying, "Judge not least ye be judged," I am thinking not so much about judging the persons (mainly Sarah Palin and John McCain) as their decision making capacity. After all, it is their decision making capacity that is going to effect my life for the next four years if they are elected to office.Reading through these comments is helping to crystallize my own thinking on the issue of a probable Palin Vice Presidency.

My first reaction was ecstatic! But as the news of all the Palin family faces in their personal lives, my gladness turned to apprehension. Now it's not because of judging "sin" but a true concern about the realities of attending to family needs vs the requirements of public service. Unlike so many bloggers, I have not reached a firm opinion regarding how these considerations are going to effect my vote.

I guess my point is that I was undecided who I was going to vote for before the selection of Mrs Palin. The fact that her daughter is in a delicate situation makes me question both McCain's and Mrs Palin's decisions. I am not condemning Bristol. I do, however, want to have confidence in my leader's decision making capacities as well as their respect for the sanctity of life.

Well, I will be praying for God's direction when I go to the polls in November. I was equally as torn before I voted in primaries. About three days before the primary, God answered my prayers and with His direction I voted for Mike Huckabee. Well, my candidate didn't win. I will continue pray and use both prayer and "critical
thinking" until I walk into the voting booth in November.

Thankyou CT for this thought provoking bolg.

Jesus taught us not to cast stones at one another. If I recall, we have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God. It is ONLY BY HIS GRACE that we are forgiven of our sins if we humble ourselves, acknowledge our sin, and ask God to forgive us.

I think that before any of us casts judgement on another, we should examine our own lives, then ask ourselves, what would Christ have me think or do or say in this situation.

Whether Republican or Democrat, man or woman, we are called, as Christ followers, to love one another and forgive and extend grace to one another. Judge not, lest ye be judged. So often we carelessly point our fingers at others while ignoring the sin in our own lives. That is not to say that we should accept the sin in someone's life; hate the sin, but love the person. Judging someone won't help bring them out of their sin, but loving them will. The best thing we can do for the Palin family, or any family or individual in this situation is to pray for them and show them Christlike compassion. The same compassion Christ shows us every day.

Ouch.

I'm a Canadian and I don't understand American politics. But I do understand that you are biting and devouring each other. The harshness of your condemnation of Palin and McCain is astonishing.

Is this CT or the New York Times I am reading?

Keep on living and you will find the need to recive grace in your own lives. Practice using it now.

Look how you people of the West have corrupted Christianity? Yes. the girl needs sympathy but certainly NOT FORGIVENESS. The act itself deserves FORTHRIGHT CONDEMNATION. Christianity will lose its attraction in Asia and Africa if you continue to practice hypocrisy.

1) I am fully convinced that many of these posts are not from conservatives or Christians or Republicans.

2) If Sarah Palin were a male, would we view her choices differently? I think we are struggling, in essence, with what the role of an American woman in 2008 should be. Wife, mother, professional - which comes first? Most of us who have all of these roles (in some form) would probably have to say that regardless of how we would like things to be, in reality, we are constantly juggling these roles. Any one of these roles may take priority on a particular day. It depends on which needs are greatest at the moment. It's a huge challenge to every woman who finds herself working through the issues of balancing marriage, family and work responsibilities, and particularly to women who also want to follow God's leading in these choices.

Whether one is the average female professional, or V.P. of the country, these are questions which call for great dependence on God, wisdom and humility. We are called to serve one another - to serve our spouses, family and community at large. Sorting that out is an immensely personal process.

No matter what, we are called to pray for our leaders. Let's pray! Pray for our leaders to seek God and His wisdom and His humility.

Fascinating and impressive levels of vitriol but ultimately quite sad to read. Much is made of Sarah Palin stepping into the public eye at cost to her daughter. She was already in the public eye! Everyone who would be relevant to her daughter (i.e. living anywhere near her) already was going to be gossiping about this. Palin's decision to run for VP just raised it to a new level.

Teenage pregnancies and unwed mothers create the type of society condemned--welfare, increased crime, drugs, divorce, etc. We assume Bristol's baby will get the best of care, but can we really assume that? Like everyone else, I saw the photos of her on myspace---drinking, lolling tongue (in teh direction of another teenage girl), etc.

Is everything forgiven because they are "christian" ?? Has anyone read The Emperor's New Clothes?

NO judging - no condemnation - no mud slinger.

Just simple facts

This family needs their parents - both of them - personal ambition should take a back seat to the family's needs. None of us is naive enough to believe that ANYONE can give 5 children what they need as a parent while holding a high political office.

This is all just so sad I feel bad for these kids - children are not trophies that you acquire and put on a mantle - they need time and nuturing - you may love them and support them financially but your can't possible give them the time they deserve when you're the VP of the country....its simple math..there's only 24 hours in a day!

As a mom on the other side of child rearing I now see that there is plenty of time after the kids are grown to pursue my own ambitions - when I had those babies I committed to raising those babies and nuturing those children. Did I HAVE to work at times...yes - but my kids ALWAYS came first - I don't think you can do that as VP of the U.S

I am amazed that a nominally Christian publication and website should encourage people to judge others when Christians are positively told, "Judge not, that ye be not judged." All of this judgemental bosh shows how little we follow Christ, no matter that we call ourselves Christians, since He told us not only to love God but to also love our neighbor even if that neighbor was our enemy. Have any of you thought of this before you posted? Please, let us behave like Christians in public if we can. Be the wonderful, non-judgemental people I am sure you are and pause to think before you post. (Sorry for not following my own advice.)

It is ironic that the vicious Daily Kos crowd is fixated on 17-year-old Bristol Palin's pregnancy by her 18-year-old boyfriend. Apparently, the leftwingers forget that Barack Obama's mom was 17 when she was made pregnant by Barack Sr., a bigamist Muslim goatherder who already had a wife (Kezia) and two kids back in Africa.

It's a good thing for Obamaphiles that Obama's mom did not consider her pregnancy a punishment and she did not abort him.

The issue is not so much about the mistakes we make and the grace God gives us, but what the priorities ought to be. It seems to me that Palin should be focusing on where she is most needed which is at home. As soon as we elevate any position as more important than being a mom, we set ourselves up for a fall. It's not that Palin is unfit to be a vice-president, it's that there is something more important than that.

Peter

If Palin was on the Democratic ticket there would be no attacks from the main stream media. If Obama was on the Republican ticket he would have been driven out of the race by now because of terroist William Airs, his pastor Rev Wright. The focus should be on the corrupt and disgraced Obama kool-aid drinking media not a woman and her family.

i think God made a mistake. Jesus didn't need to come and die for sinners since i see so many comments here from perfect people who don't need a savior and are even willing to help God by judging those among their inferiors who dare to disagree with them.

could this obsession with the Palin family be fury from the devils own at being exposed as hypocrites?

the last i looked, only Sarah Palin was running for office, and Senator Obama said her children are off limits.

Hellllo out there Palin family bashers. the Senator was talking to you.

Palin was nominated to energize the religious right. PERIOD!

NOT THIS TIME!

You cannot support Life and support War, Global Warming, Capital Punishment, a Health Care crisis and be Pro-Life. The bible calls us to care for the least among us--the vet, the homeless, the poor, the disenfranchised. No where does the Bible advocate torture.

Palin does not support family values as she does not value her family as her first priority. She left a premature infant with Down's only three days after his birth. How is he supposed to bond with his mother? She knowingly threw her daughter under the bus for political gain. Her daughter is seen on My Space drinking under age. Doesn't she supervise anything they do? That's not mothering; that's reproducing.

And yes, I am a born-again evangelical pentecostal Christian woman, too.

NOT THIS TIME!

The villain in this drama is the media. If today’s media used the same standards of the 1940s and 1950s, no one here would even know that Palin’s daughter was pregnant. The media back then had a standard that family matters were private. This is the reason why the public did not know about FDR’s wheel chair or JFK’s extramarital affairs.

I've got to say, after reading about half of the comments, I've seen a lot that have mentioned "vitriol" and people being un-Christian. It could be because I'm young and out of touch with Christianity (I am an atheist) but wow, I've found very little that could be construed as vitriolic or even all that rude. I'm guessing that if the people complaining about the vitriol went to other blogs and read the comments, their eyeballs would melt.

I don't think people are attacking poor Bristol Palin, who really doesn't deserve to get dragged through this. I think most of everyone is just wondering what on earth her mother was thinking, doing this to her. Maybe Bristol was okay with it, but will we ever know for certain?

I find it rather laughable that the negative comments are attributed to people being shills for Barack Obama. Just because you don't like something doesn't make it an attack from the outside. People are allowed to disagree and criticize and that doesn't make them some kind of sleeper robot for the "enemy". And why are we even thinking in terms of 'us and them' anyway? That's what I've found distressing in reading many of the comments.

It's okay to disagree. It's okay to question. It's okay to doubt. Toeing a party line of any sort, Democrat or Republican, is truly being blind and robotic. Or at leas that's what I think, but feel free to take that with a grain of salt because you know where I'm coming from, philosophically. I'm just puzzled and saddened that people are so quick to dismiss the questions of others.

I applaud you guys--I am not religions and with the Palin thing I think I will never be now! BUT I will say this is the first Christian site that showed respect for varying viewpoints and a willingness to listen--As they say, the world is watching and I just wish more people could see the side of the conservative ideal -- you may win more recruits.

For those who say do not judge...do not cast the first stone...To that I say we all MUST judge. Not Bristol or Obama's mother. But we, as voters have an obligation to judge all the Presidential and VP candidates. We are about to chose the next President of the United States and the VP who could become President of one of the most powerful countries in the world. You either A) Don't vote and leave the outcome in Gods hands, or B) You judge. Judging means looking at all the candidates positions on all the major issues, war, economy..basically anything that the candidate has the power to change. We also have to look at their track record. Have their actions been consistent with their words? What experience do these candidates have with foreign affairs? What experience do these candidates have with the economy? Do they think things over or do they make quick judgements? What are their family values? If we are to judge Sara Palin, then we need to know how the other candidates and their wives conducted themselves. When did Barak Obama's wife go back to work after the birth of their children? If we are going to question how a woman could leave a pregnant teen to go on the campaign trail, then we need to look at how much time the other candidates and their spouses spend with their kids. What have these candidates done to help poor teens keep their babies? How have the candidates treated aging parents? If these people are going to vote on Social Security, I'd like to know what kind of relationship they have with aging relatives. How have they voted to treat injured soldiers and their families? Ultimately we have to look at BOTH the Conservative and the Liberal blogs, even if we risk an attack of high blood pressure. One should never assume the other side is a pack of idiots or inherently evil. What experiences shaped the opinion of people on the other side of the issues? If we are to vote this November, we also have to ask ourselves honestly how we have judged other people in the past(parents of pregnant teens in our community),(friends whose churches may have said things we didn't agree with- did we assume our friends held all the same opinions as their ministers?) and ultimately if we are going into that voting booth, we have to judge.

Oh, Wow. I stopped reading these comments about half way through. All I have to say ask is who is it that is throwing the stones here?

So much judgment about Sarah Palin being a working mother.....and this from the so called tolerant voices of America.

So much evidence of a lack of belief that a FATHER can take care of five children as well as a MOTHER can....again from the so called tolerant voices of America...the same ones screaming for equal rights? Apprarently, Equal Rights are only for the LIBERAL DEMOCRATS.

So much point of the finger and accusations of "failure" as a parent....who among us has had a child who had never broken a rule despite our guidance?

Bristol Palin is 17 years old. She knew the consequences of her act could result in STD's or pregnancy. She made the "choice" to bear her child and to marry the father. She is bearing the consequences to her choice with the support of her parents. She is doing so on a larger stage then most of us would have to do, but 16 years of her life have been spent with the knowledge that her parents were public figures....and this microscopic disection of their life was a known risk by both Bristol and her mother.

Thank you very much for this information.

It is unethical to REFUSE to hold all people to the same moral standards. Partisan Palin supporters cannot in good conscience issue a candidate they "like" a free pass for something that they would assuredly hold a candidate not their liking to task for. Well, they can - but they are made hypocrites in the process.

I, too, was 17 years old and pregnant. Thank God my parents didn't FORCE me to marry a man who still hasn't grown up. The Palins shouldn't force Bristol to marry if she and the father are not ready. However, I think the real hypocrits in this situation are the likes of DR.CHARLES DODSON! I have lost a lot of respect for him. He dogs others out (remember Bill Clinton) when they mess up but gives free passes if you're Republican. Dr. Dodson doesn't preach the gospel of Jesus, he preaches the gospel of the the republican party. He's such a fake!!

WOW is all I can say. After looking over the comments here I am afraid that there are a lot of people who have no idea about Grace & Forgiveness which is the basis of Christian Faith.

We should be looking at the facts and records of the candidates and finding out what they stand for outside of what the Biased Media says and the stupid campaign commercials on both sides are saying.

Just some thoughts:
1)each administration has to pay for the "sins" of the previous administration. So look at the facts not the personal lives of the people.

2)If anyone in political office makes a mistake admits it and genuinely asks forgiveness they should get forgiveness, they still may have consequences of their actions, but we should ALL be appalled at those that knowingly try to hide and cover up what they have done and expect no consequences.

I pray that the man that GOD wants in office will get there and that we all serious pray for God's wisdom in that direction.

People make mistakes. Todd Palin made a mistake with his drunk driving address. Bristol Palin made the same mistake many teenagers do in life. What I don't understand is why Sarah Palin put her ambition ahead of her family. Working mothers are commonplace in today's society. To put your daughter who is already facing a difficult situation on display for your own career opportunity does not seem right to me. What message is she sending to all of her children? Sarah needs to mind the store at home and when her house is in order pursue her political ambitions. It appears to me her children are raising each other.

Good, Now I hope after it has been proven that the baby is African American, Dr. Dobson will extend those same graceful words of forgiveness to Bristol. By the way, I hope to see how he will now council the girls on his campus abt staying in "his" school and having their baby and sitting a perfect (pregnant before marriage is O.K. as long as yu keep the baby) example for the other students. I'm sure 1 out of three girls at his college will be faced with a decission as such within the next year or two. I bet he then will preach abstinence,go and sin no more, not an example for other girls, get out of the spot light, be sure yr sins will find yu out etc...

What has a lot of evangelical Christians excited is that for years Dobson has advocated that we put our families first. And yet he rabidly endorses a woman who clearly puts "Country First."

Well, John...maybe when a country is rapidly anti-family, putting time into country is putting family first.

It is deplorable to me the way this woman's children have been attacked. Guess what, it is possible to raise your children with proper morals and still they make unwise choices! This does not mean you do not teach them right from wrong. An ongoing aspect of parenting is to raise your children with proper morals so that they know right from wrong. If they choose wrong, pray for them and help them back on to the path of righteousness. It is very hypocritical, deplorable and self-defeating of the left to go after Palin's children.

I think it was actually a boost to Palin and her appeal to the 'average' American.. A mom who tries her best to raise her child correctly and ultimately the child makes a bad decision and pays a very steep price.

This does not mean you do not teach them right from wrong.

the precious ideas you provided do help our team's investigation for our company

It is sad to know that a certain person preaches righteousness and then his daughter would jeopardize his integrity and loses the face for some. But not all people are deserving this look down approach and got the respect in question. We must all inculcate on our minds that a certain person is not perfect and does commit mistakes. But how he conquered these obstacles are the main point wherein we indulge on criticizing. But there is a word that best describes: second chance.

It clearly demonstrates the hate and bitterness that is dwelling within so many of us. I thank God for the integrity and courage of both Senator McCain and Governor Palin in standing true to their calling to serve. I hope you make an updates.

Gideon's comment: Unfortunately, Sarah Palin's actions do not vicariously apply to her daughter's pregnancy. Had she recommended an abortion, and she did not, you would have a point... Best regards

So much judgment about Sarah Palin being a working mother.....and this from the so called tolerant voices of America.

The ignorance, arrogance, and shameful hypocrisy exhibited by Bill Vogt in an interview above, show us how much we all have to do to bring us up to the level of Jesus when he said to the prositute, "..go and sin no more".

To the person above me who brought up abortion: Palin did the right thing by supporting her daughter and helping her bring this child into this world. No baby deserves to die no matter how politically inconvenient it might be to you or anyone else.

Nice topic and post, as we were just talking about what things can happen in the medicine industry.

Thanks for taking this opportunity to discuss this, I feel fervently about this and I like learning about this subject.

Please post more of this. I largely enjoyed it.

Unbelievable, the comments here. It's worthy to note that in both politics and religion there are two kinds of people: those who define themselves according to what they love, and those who define themselves according to what they love to hate.

Well, the millions of obamatrons policing the internet, surely are adept at it. God Bless the Palins. God Bless America !! :)

Good reaction!! :)

I don't know about the Palins. But I know about the people who are commenting on this. There is OUTRAGE at the DUI from 22 years ago. And OUTRAGE at Dobson for being forgiving.I'm not pleased with the Palin story. But I'm appaled at the comments on this blog....

I'm euphoric watching the Christian gnashing-of-teeth over the implosion of the Republican Party. The Republicans will have most likely eight years to develop a candidate who can fend off Dobson Inc. Keep religion out of politics.

Now here's some real Conservative values. Seems like Republicans are becoming more and more Liberal everyday. There's hope for mankind after all!

Clearly McCain did not vet his VP choice. Alaskan corrupt politics are coming under the campaign spotlight and the facts are coming out on the supposed Alaskan reformer pose. This newest soap opera episode just reinforces that McCain does not have the temperament or judgment to be president.

What is far more dangerous and far more horrendous is that nobody vetted the democratic candidate who was voted in. Palin, or for that matter, Mickey Mouse, would be far better in the White House than who is there now. From what I've read, he can't run a staff meeting without a teleprompter. Everyone is leaving or has left his staff except for Jarrett, who is the one that is actually making the decisions. And we know nothing about her either. The dumbing down of America has been very effective, and never before has our country been in such peril.

When did Bristol Palin got pregnant?? :O

If he followed "Judge not, that you be not judged" James Dobson would be out of business...

It might not be right. But God forgives, why shouldn't we?

I definitely do enjoy this great website and your post was just wonderful. This is the ultimate blog for anybody who would like to learn about this subject. Thanks for sharing all these valuable informations.

Very good post with informative information. I really appreciate the fact that you approach these topics from a stand point of knowledge and information. This is the first time, I visited at your site and became your fan. You are bookmarked. Please keep on posting.

I was able to retrieve the details that I was searching for. I would like to thank you for the initiatives you have made in writing this article. I am expecting the same best efforts from you in the future as well.

It is a very inspiring post to go through for excellent story about sustainability; food and environment in urban areas. The successful example of urban farming in Chicago can be followed in other cities to make the cities greener and less polluted.I've enjoyed reading the interesting discussion.

For those of you crowing about Bristol's situation conflicting with Gov. Palin's position on abstinence-only sex ed, you should really check your facts. Gov. Palin has NEVER supported abstinence-only sex ed. She stated in one interview that she would not give funding to promote only explicit sex ed. This is not the same thing.
On a personal note, I'd like to say how classy it is for everyone to be using a 17 yr old girl as a political football. So much for the socially compassionate left

Always was interested in this theme! Sad.

I am interested in it for a long time! who is taking care of this special needs child? she is already gone from her child on the road campaigning, does this fact of her work display that if her new child was not special needs or not her daughters illegitimate offspring, as rumors suggest, would she have felt more maternal then?

What remarkable post!
