Readers say Washington Post cartoon lampooned their faith

The Washington Post is taking heat for posting a cartoon caricaturing Sarah Palin speaking in tongues and God telling St. Peter "All I can hear is some dam' right-wing politician spouting gibberish."

washpocartoon.gif

The Washington Post Ombudsman Deborah Howell wrote on Sunday that 350 readers have complained since the cartoon was posted online September 9, saying the cartoon lampooned their faith.

Cartoonist Pat Oliphant depicts John McCain saying, "She's a Pentecostal and speaks in tongues, and only God can understand what she's saying, but it gives my campaign a direct line to the almighty."

"Readers were right to complain; I will deal with political cartooning in another column," Howell writes. "Political cartoons and comics aren't selected at washingtonpost.com the way they are for The Post in print; they are automatically posted."

Universal Press Syndicate, which distributes Pat Oliphant's cartoons, writes: "No one is safe from the acid brush of Pat Oliphant. Oliphant is acknowledged as the nation's most influential political cartoonist. A master of what he calls "confrontational art," Oliphant spares neither the liberal nor conservative, sinner nor saint."

Ken Gurley, who blogs for the Houston Chronicle, is outraged and demands an apology. He writes:

"Had Oliphant mocked the Muslim faith in a similar manner, the response would have been loud and strong. (Anyone remember the Danish cartoonist who tried that?) Or, should the cartoonist have ridiculed the Catholic faith of the Democratic nominee for Vice President, the response would again be swift and profound. But, lampooning Pentecostals is fair game for certain segments of the media who view intolerance as the only mortal sin - unless the intolerance is toward a person's particular faith."

Other Pentecostals who have been central in the 2008 election include Leah Daughtry, Democratic National Convention CEO, and Joshua Dubois, Barack Obama's religious outreach coordinator.

I read your blog religiously (pun intended) and refer to it all the time on my blog.

I was wondering why there is no category for Poverty, AIDS or Orphan Care since these issues are as important to many christian voters as Sexual Ethics and Abortion? I would love to read more about where these two candidates stand (and their records) on AIDS relief, Orphan care and poverty.

Thanks for you blog. I also read Christianity Today monthly and have been a subscriber for over 2 years.

Offensive and just down right stupid are not mutually exclusive.

Proving the Demos are in FULL PANIC and feel they have to pull out all the stops. Tough s*it, losers; the MESSIAH'S campaign is in a death spiral, and it's now too late to start having "buyer's remorse

I am shocked that the "Progressives" who are suppose to be all about tolerance and enlightenment would do something that hurts somebody else feelings.

Okay who am I kidding, not shocked at all this from the atheist secular liberals. They fear morals, values and God. For it conflicts with their gray area of moral rationalization to equivocate their behavior. In short they fear a defined right and wrong - good and evil.

If your faith isn't up to a bit of parody, you're taking it way too seriously.

Getting joked about seems fairly mild; in other countries, people are persecuted for religious expression. Besides, God and Jesus are strong enough to take it.

I'm proud of a country in which writers and artists are free to express themselves. In fact, didn't Sarah Palin refer to our freedom as being the reason for 9/11?

Oliphant is an ignoramus - Palin is not a Pentecostal.

I believe it is the Democrats thaty are speaking in tonges when they talk about their energy bill.

"the nation's most influential political cartoonist"?

Now, THAT's gibberish. Anyone who's political viewpoint is influenced by a nitwit who draws cartoons for a living is already a liberal.

It is easy to tell which of our candidates care about caring for the less fortunate, and it is NOT the ones who are running of that platform -- their 'deeds' don't match their 'words'.

Biden's tax returns reveal that he gave very little to charity (to 'the least of these'). One year, he only gave $120!!!!! Most Christians, who earn much less per year than Biden's six-figure salary, give that much in one week!

The two Democrat candidates gave paltry amounts to 'the least of these, their brethren':

Biden -- less than one-sixteenth of one percent!!!

Obama -- less than one percent!

And the REPUBLICAN candidate, for whom the Left has such disdain as NOT CARING about those less fortunate than he?

McCain -- over 28% of his salary went to charity!!!!!

Not only does McCain care about those babies at conception and again at birth (unlike Obama, who voted to let them die when these Babies were born alive after a failed abortion) -- but McCain cares about them as they grow and as they become adults, and not just American Babies and Adults, but he and Cindy have given to the rest of the world, too, and Cindy has done 30 years of hands-on charity work all over the planet, even in Viet Nam.

Just words. . . .from the Dems. . . .

A liberal political cartoonist is a classless, bigoted buffoon.

Dog bites man.

Yes, let's see Mr. Oliphant lampoon a muslim. He won't because he a chicken-hearted coward. Making fun of Christians, of any denomination, has been a favorite passtime of the left in cartoon, stories and in movies. That's because you can't picture a Christian rioting and throwing garbage cans at the New York Times or L.S. Times, or beheading anyone on video.

Also, unless Mr. Oliphant is a non-Christian, or atheist (and I do not claim to know what he is, if anything) he would be a hypocrite. If he is a believer in God, he is worse than I thought for mocking someone else who may have strong beliefs. I wish that these liberal loonies would take on the real threat: Islamic Terrorists. Don't look for it, though, because they would wet their diapers if they did because, as opposed to Christians, those guys will actually come up to you and kill you.

I've seen some pretty offensive, bigoted stuff out of people associated with the media. This, however, does take me aback. I'm not so much offended as I am surprised that anyone would think that this kind of religious mockery is acceptable in public.

Let's not forget that the premise of the cartoon is rooted in Oliphant's ignorance: Sarah Palin is not a Pentacostal.

So conservatives can dish it out but they can't take it?

Liberals attacking Christians' beliefs is no different than Christians attacking liberals' beliefs.

If you use your beliefs as a political weapon, you forfeit your claim to tolerance.

Oh, and ever hear of Rev. Jeremiah Wright?

Squeaky needs a class in logic. WRIGHT is the MOCKERY. Talk about apples and oranges.

Perhaps some Religious Right nutcase might take their lead from the JDL and the Islamist in this country, and declare a "jihad" on this Oliphant fellow. The pen is only mightier than the sword if no-one chooses to pick up thier sword.

Squeaky- I forgot to mention your post was awfully immature much like the child who screams but he did it first. Of course in this case that is not even the case

Can you imagine if this was Barack and Rev Wright? CNN, Keith O, Chris M, and the lefties would be going NUTS!!!

I'm a catholic and I find this totally offensive. Frankly, if you are a christian and you don't find it offensive - that's the problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Christians should not be bothered or offended by these writings or pictures. You should in fact feel sorry for these people. They mock your faith because they are lacking it. God does not need you to defend him as he will deal with the little cowards in his own time. I must agree though that cowards such as Oliphant dare not mock Islam. They might have to deal with a death sentance hanging over thier heads.

Rev Wright ran a political organization disguised as a church. If Sarah's pastor has made controversial (or even non-controversial, for that matter) political statements, then by all means let's hear them. I won't hold my breath....

Stay classy Oliphant?

Are you kidding?

Oliphant is a far left anti-American who never criticizes the left but has a "poison pen" for anyone who is patriotic and supports our country.

But he works for the Post so "go figure"

"Squeaky- I forgot to mention your post was awfully immature much like the child who screams but he did it first."

Aren't you saying, "He hit me back"?

Let me reiterate my position: If conservative Christians' beliefs influence their politics, then those beliefs become fair game for criticism, just like the beliefs and attitudes that influence the politics of liberals and everyone else.

Any true Christian voting for the liberal Obama needs their head examined.

To be fair, I'd say the cartoon in question is in poor taste, little more than mockery. And as has been said, Palin no longer goes to a Pentecostal church.

I think a far more important issue that whether Sarah Palin pratices speaking in tongues is whether she believes in the Rapture or that we're approaching the End Of Days. Beliefs like this can significantly influence a leader decisions on matters of foreign policy and other things, so it's certainly fair to make issues out of them in the campaign.

Al Franken: "Any true Christian voting for the liberal Obama needs their head examined."

Because it's the party of Karl Rove that truly exemplifies Christian values.

Too bad true Scotsmen can't vote.

If we're going to start poking into eschatalogical beliefs and making assumptions of how that will affect their policy making, we've essentially given up on separation of church and state.

Examine their stated and demonstrated positions every way you can, but let's not start usurping freedom of religion by establishing some sort of religious test for office. Otherwise, we'll need to begin asking in depth questions not only about candidates' denominations, but about detailed theological nits that many devout Christians don't even fully understand.

Carole Turner,

I'm not quite sure where you get the idea that poverty is as important an issue as killing a child. It's certainly not in the bible, at least, the Christian one.

But again, what matters is how much their religious beliefs affect their political judgement. Differences in how the candidates make political judgements is what the voters decide on. Nothing to do with government looking into your religion.

And IANAA, but polls show that voters are more likely to discriminate against atheists than even Muslims and gays.

Florida House Speaker recently remarked that Cuban-Americans are the only ethnic minority that it's politically correct to insult. Pat Oliphant is living proof of that.

http://www.babalublog.com/archives/005972.html

I guess Christians are the only fair game when it comes to religious people.

Biscuits -- you have it exactly backwards. There are thousands of verses about caring for the poor and oppressed and zero about abortion.

36"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" 37Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'[b] 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'[c] 40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

Matt. 22:36-40. "Love your neighbor as yourself" is the heart of Jesus' social justice message. When Jesus is asked who is our "neighbor," he gives the parable of the Good Samaritan. He didn't say anything about abortion or homosexuality.

No big surprises here.

So what if she believes we live in the end times? I would say that ANY person who believes in that, know that we cannot speed up what is in God's hands.

Also, if what Oliphant is against is acting what appears to be "goofy," then he just needs to visit the rock concert of any liberal band. Penecostals have not cornered the market on that type of behavior.

JohnH:
"So what if she believes we live in the end times? I would say that ANY person who believes in that, know that we cannot speed up what is in God's hands."

But many end-times believers feel that we don't need to be concerned about the long-term health of our planet. Some also feel that it's inappropriate for "man" to try to bring about world peace because only God can do that.

"Also, if what Oliphant is against is acting what appears to be "goofy," then he just needs to visit the rock concert of any liberal band. Penecostals have not cornered the market on that type of behavior."

Well, some expect our presidents and vice-presidents to be less goofy and more reality-based and be held to higher standards than goofy members of liberal rock bands.

(OTOH, give me Bruce Springsteen over George W. Bush any day.)

This cartoon is not only offensive, but rude as well. The author shows their ignorance by depicting Sarah Palin as a Penecostal. She obviously is not. You would NEVER read anything like this cartoon about Muslims or Catholics. I would also like to point out that there are those who speak in tongues beside Apostolic Penecostals. Take for instance the Assembly of God Church.

Incidentally, I would implore any Pentecostalists pole-vaulting onto the back of this Oliphant-bashing bandwagon to consider, if only for a moment, just how *utterly insane* your hysterical gibbering looks from the outside. Just for a moment. Thanks.

Now reflect on the fact that, given John McCain's advanced age, there is a statistically significant chance that someone who believes the aforementioned hysterical gibbering to be the apotheosis of spiritual fulfilment, someone whose allegience to the intellectually bankrupt religious doctrine of creationism proves she has no idea how to weigh evidence rationally, could be getting her hands on nuclear codes. Just for a moment, reflect on that. Cool.

Now, can you see why a lot of people are sensibly worried about the possible political ascendancy of Sarah Palin? And can you understand that some people's natural reaction to such apprehension is to turn it into a joke, like Oliphant did?

Furthermore, the tagline "They're much given to that, Sir", indicates that Republican policies are just as much the target as Palin's ecstatic babbling for Jesus.

I've found that those most eager to take offense are those whose faith is too insecure to take a joke. Lighten up, folks.

Heh, you ever notice how the folk who make derogatory remarks about us hide behind silly Post Names? They are afraid to post their real names. Well I'm not. Oliphant is going to burn in Hell for Eternity. So, if this person wants to flagrantly post rude, incorrect, horrible, lies, nasty, rotten, disrespectful, do I need to go any further? things about these people, then have at it, because reality states that you will burn in Hell. We who hold the Holy Bible as Truth know that these Truths are held for Eternity. No amount of mocking is going to change it. Our Father permitted His Only Begotten Son to be Crucified on the Cross. He permitted Oliphant to print this Blasphemy. He will pass judgement on Oliphant on Judgement Day, and on Judgement Day, Allelujah!!! Oliphant will begin to learn all about what Truth really means. So, like I say, Oliphant is going to burn in Hell. Period. That is not a passionate remark, it's just a statement of fact.

For all those who keep posting it, Gov Palin IS a pentacostal. She was a memeber of the Pentacostal Assemblies of God and she belongs to a non denom Spirit filled church now.
Pastor Jackson Plant

GK1 and others who are suggesting everyone lighten up, I think you're responses are a little off the mark. First, many if not most of those decrying this cartoon as offensive are not Pentecostal. I'm not, and I would be just as offended if Oliphant had absurdly depicted Muslims or Catholics. This cartoon is incredibly inane in a number of ways. 1) Palin is not a Pentecostal and, to my knowledge, has never claimed to speak in tongues. 2) McCain has never made any reference to Palin's speaking in tongues or having a direct line to the Almighty. 3) Oliphant crosses the line from politics to theology by depicting God as being clueless regarding speaking in tongues. What qualifies a political cartoonist to make this kind of judgment? I happen to enjoy satire and ironic comedy even when it's pointed at me. It makes me look at myself from a different perspective. But for satire to be effective it needs to actually reveal something genuine about its intended target. It has to hit the mark. Oliphant's cartoon doesn't even come close. Instead of being satirical or ironic it's inaccurate and just mean-spirited ridicule. I don't care what group is being mocked, this is inexcusable.

Jackson, Palin has said more than once that she is not Pentecostal. Going to a church of a particular denomination does not necessarily mean that you subscribe to all of their theology. I have a number of friends that attend Reformed churches who are not Reformed theologically. I hadn't heard that the nondenominational church she attends is "Spirit-filled." I'll have to check that out. Regardless, Palin claims that she is not Pentecostal.

Ok, I seem to have been misinformed on that, however the fact remains that the cartoon insutled me and millions like me, ie Pentacostal in belief. This was reprehensable and Oliphant should be fired and the people who were responsible for publishing this should be also. Oh and for J, there are alot of left wingers that are this belief also so you need to learn what you are talking about.

Ummn, isn't the "point" of the cartoon, that Sarah Palin is speaking nonsense in terms of politics.

McCain, not being Christian, pentacostal or otherwise, makes up an excuse for her--her godliness transcends rational interpretation. In other words, McCain will put a religious spin on anything she says, just to pander to the evangelical community.

the real jabs are for McCain more than anyone, and perhaps anyone who believes they have a direct line to God.

To add one more thing; why is God's vocabularly so limited that profanity is required?

I found this quote on the internet: "A perfect example of this is nationally syndicated cartoonist Pat Oliphant, who has vilified Arabs in his political cartoons for decades. The Arabs in his cartoons are exclusively hook-nosed, obese, beady eyed, greedy sheikhs residing in tents or palaces. A cartoon published in 2005 showed his trademark greedy Arab sheikhs feasting in a tent and refusing to give money to Tsunami victims"

He makes fun of people. its his job.

Actually, the thing that is most offensive to me is the way so many evangelicals (not all. thank goodness!) seem to be falling into lockstep support for Gov. Palin, despite all sorts of danger signals that this may be fallacious. Will this be Bush all over again?

I am so glad to see things begin to turn around for Obama, for it seems to me he is one of the sincerest Christians who has run for the office of president in a long time. What do I base this on? His speech on race, and especially the sixth chapter of his book entitled "Faith" in THE AUDCITY OF HOPE where he discusses his beliefs with compelling honesty, and even shares some of his doubts. If this man becomes president, I think many evangelicals will eventually come to appreciate him.

Makes me sad that "Christians" can be such and angry, unforgiving bunch! Maybe I totally misunderstand the Bible.

I sometimes think we Christians have a seriously underdeveloped sense of humour and of satire.
I don't see this cartoon as mocking God or even the faith but of targeting the political process, and showing to what extent a political party/leader may go to 'win' votes.
And, possibly mocking those voters who may vote for McCain just because Palin is a Christian and can claim direct line to God.

I don't like God being mocked, but our religiousity is fair game.

OVER THE YEARS, I HAVE ATTENDED SEVERAL CHURCHES AND THE SPIRIT FILLED CHURCHES THAT PRAY IN TONGUES IS THE MOST EDIFYING OF ALL THE FAITHS. I PRAY IN TONGUES. IT IS A GIFT! A VERY SPECIAL GIFT FROM GOD AND I HOPE THAT SARAH PALIN IS SPIRIT FILLED AND PRAYS IN TONGUES. PEOPLE OF FAITH KNOW WHO THEY ARE, PEOPLE WHO PUT US DOWN WILL SOME DAY FIND THEIR WAY TO GOD. SARAH PALIN WILL MAKE A GREAT V/P AND HOPEFULLY THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE U.S.A. NELLIE MCCONNELL, CA

Ignorant and classless. He does it for publicity which makes him a media whore. That's Oliphant.

I don't buy the outrage about this cartoon. Folks on the far right side of the religious and political spectrum dish out worse distortions every day. Listening to many of them you would think that all democrats, liberals, gays and lesbians, feminists, and journalists are fiends incarnate who have no purpose in life other than destroying the Christian religion and traditional American values. This is as silly as it is self-serving, not to mention uncharitable. It is any surprise then that we end up reaping what we sow? And what about Luke 6:41-42? If Christians aren't willing to take that teaching seriously then who will?

I said in yesterday's post that Oliphant was going to go to Hell for posting the cartoon, and strangely, the post disappeared. I wonder why? Why didn't other posts disappear quietly as mine did? Isn't this a land of free speech? Hmmm? Christianity Today? What do you stand for? I said that God permitted His Only Begotten Son to Die on the Cross for our sins, and that accordingly on Judgement Day, Oliphant would pay for his/her sins (I'm not sure of Oliphant's gender), that Oliphant would instant be slammed into Hell, for this cartoon, and many other blasphemous sp? cartoons that have gone out over the years. Check it out over the years. Yesterday I posted this very opinion right before Jackson's post and right below Viejita del oeste post. Somehow it was removed. Anyway, here it is again. Oliphant is going to burn in Hell. So if Oliphant wants to post this kind of cartoon, then have at it, he/she will pay, oh yes, he/she will pay.

With reference to the previous post, after reading something like this do we wonder why so many in the world are frightened or appalled by Christians? Judgement is Gods' business, not ours. We should be more worried what the Book of Life will say about us, and less confident that we know what it will say about others.

I am a pentecostal, and this is Blasphemy of the worst kind, and the bible says that it is the "Unforgivable Sin". I pity the soul that posted this cartoon, may God have mercy on them. People should never criticize something they don't understand, unless the person who did this cartoon has ever received the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues,he would not know how REAL it really is, and YES , God does understand exactly what we are saying, and many times it can be interpreted by man.

This is out and out blasphemy. I take offense to the attack of christian faith

Oh pluueeezzzz...read this stuff and ask yourself...whose eye has the plank in it? Look how a sinner's picture can whip everyone
into righteous indignation. If we feel threatend by a cartoon we must really be a basket case when Satan comes knocking! I know, let's love each other, forgive each other, rebuke each other if necessary but look at the prize. Living the life our Father freely gave us...to do HIS will- not ours. Personally I don't know anything about the cartoonist but I thought it was funny. So what?

The Omniscient, Omnipotent and Omnipresent God of the Universe does not need me to defend Him--though I agree this cartoon is tasteless and yes, offensive. There is no constitutional right not to be offended, and most turn-the-other-cheek Christians are growing used to such bigotry from the post-modern liberal media. Indeed I'm offended every time I read an AP commentary/editorial that masquerades as "news".

This cartoon was a waste of Mr. O's talent and forum. The denigration of religious deities or leaders (even those I don't adhere to) doesn't start problem-solving discussions, does not clarify any issues, does not sow peace among brethren (and the right and the left, Christians and non-Christians are brethren of a sort as citizens of the same country/planet), etc. Because Mr. O seeks to demean what many hold as holy, he loses his bully pulpit and becomes just a schoolyard taunter saying "Nya,Nya--Take that, God! Take that, Christians!" My parents taught me when confronted with that level of immaturity, not to reciprocate, but to walk quietly away.

I don't know Mr. O's heart, and according to my faith, he won't be answering to me anyway. The God I worship, I worship out of love and awe at His great mercy and goodness. That is why I take offense when someone slurs His Name. Perhaps Mr. O has something he's devoted to--something or someone that means to him what the Triune God means to Christians. If so, one day he may see what he adores misrepresented or denigrated and then be able to feel remorse for offending what we deem holy and worthy of worship. That is my prayer--not that what he worships is denigrated, but that if he can't believe, he might at least begin to understand. That would be a step for all of us toward respect and peaceful co-existence.

So much that is poignant and useful can be said with even a cartoon, and Oliphant has such skill and opportunity. He blew it with this one. All this one says is, "I hate most Christians and am dropping all pretense of being a tolerant man." Well, at least now we know, and we can choose how we respond. Will we pray good things for him? (Think Matthew 5:43-45.) I will, and I bet most of you will, too.

The cartoon was not a joke, nor was it anything that people should just laugh off. It was a serious display of provokatory discrimination. Pentecostals have a right to be upset and angry. This was not a jab at Palin so much as those who believe in speaking in tongues, and a furtherance of discrimination against them by the media and "orthodox" Christianity. I believe most Christians can take a joke about their particular faith, but this goes way beyond that.

For someone who touted the merits of rational thinking in the first of your two posts, you seem to be unable to live by your own standards. Linking “taking offense” to “insecurity in one’s faith” is a logical fallacy (non sequitur). Such cheap shots might have worked in high school, but you need to give more credit to the readers here.
If anything, you are the one that might be displaying a certain level of insecurity since you are hiding behind a nickname and do not show enough courage to put your real name behind your comments. Because you are anonymous, you might be feeling free to make vicious attacks and unfounded claims without any need to worry about accountability.
Most of the people responding are not Pentecostals (and as such, speaking in tongues is not part of their spiritual experience, and certainly not an area where insecurity might creep).
Most here are taking offense at the way Palin’s faith is mocked (I am not particularly impressed by her political resume but such vicious attacks are clearly out of line) .
Furthermore (and most importantly) this cartoon is highly disrespectful to God and for those who appreciate the Holiness and majesty of God, this is not a joking matter. I would not find it amusing if my earthly parents were treated that way, how many times when it comes to m heavenly father that is the creator of the universe and the sustainer of all living things?
The issue is not about not lighting up, it is about respect … respect even for those you disagree with (am I asking too much of you?)
As a someone who is neither a Pentecostal or a Charismatic, I find your caricature of the Pentecostal experience (hysterical gibbering to be the apotheosis of spiritual fulfillment) to only reflect your own ignorance of the diversity among Pentecostal and of Palin’s actual beliefs among speaking in tongues. Unless of course you claim to have privilege knowledge about her.

It's not the point to speak against a persons faith the point is in grieving the Holy Spirit, that you are making a mockery of, in grieving him you are grieving God because the two are ONE and I pray for the soul of the one crazy enough to do that. But we do things because we are unlearned and God is their to forgive if you.. Repent and be baptized everyone of you for the remission of your sin and you shall recieve the gift of the Holy Ghost (Acts 2:38) take heed for your soul sake. God has Agape Love- Forgive them Lord for they know not what they do!

No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.

(1 John 4:12-13, ESV)

We are organizing a media blitz on this issue as well as organizing a protest at the HQ of the Washington Post. Please go to www.protestthepost.com to sign up!

Oh, Pot! Here's Kettle. And It's Black!

The Assemblies of God and other Christians who are offended at this cartoon need to check themselves. You regularly offend and make fun of people who do not follow your belief systems, either over the pulpit or in print, or simply through snide remarks. I guess it's all well and good to bash the Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, New Agers and Atheists because they're all alleged cults or nonbelievers. However, the moment a political cartoonist notes how a presidential candidate pandered to a particular group, why, that's off-limits.

Give me a break.

It is estimated that there are some 400 million Pentecostal and Charismatics. You would think that this large group would stand up and let their voice be heard. This group would not advocate harming those who ridicule their faith. Journalist only ridicule faiths that are tolerant. That is their hypocrisy. Some in the media have gone as far as to compare Christian's and terrorist, but you notice they are not afraid of Christians. These kinds of cartoons work to alienate and embarrass those who have faith. They should only remind us that tolerance and choice come from God and not the good will of the powerful. I think that the lack of response to this shows two things. First that Christians are tolerant and second many have been made to feel embraced about faith by a dominant intolerant elite. They (liberal journalists) are afraid of Sarah because she knows who she is weather or not she speaks in tongues does not matter to them. They treat her as their enemy because she symbolizes the failure of there ideas.

"Or, should the cartoonist have ridiculed the Catholic faith of the Democratic nominee for Vice President, the response would again be swift and profound." Is he kidding me? Oliphant has done some VERY NASTY cartoons about the Catholic Church with no backlash whatsoever.

And when Oliphant attacked the Catholic Church (several times), Mr. Gurley was silent

If I haven't missed my guess something terrific is heading out way for blaspheming agains the Hoy Spirit's workings. This is non a big joke as the liberals would have you to think!!! -Dr.B.G.Drake

I understand the cartoonist. In his heart he resents the fact that we as Christians look to one another in confidence. Sarah palin IS one of US! She sees life in the same perspective as we do. We all start off as sinners. Only by God's grace and the blood of Jesus which was shed for our Salvation may we enter into our Salvation. Nothing we could do could ever earn god's favor. Unlike the cartoon, God in all of His love and mercy is actively working everything together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to his purpose. My heart is broken for our very lost nation and I plead with God to have mercy, open our eyes and save us!

Doesn't it say somewhere that God says, "Touch not my annoited". I'd say that God himself is "annoited" enough, don't you think?

You know, yes we should pray that Mr. Oliphant would come to know Jesus as personal Saviour, no doubt about it, but... I'm not going to stand by and have someone mock the only true and living God!!

You know, (and I know I'm stretching it a little bit, so please forgive me...) when Jesus saw an injustice going on in His Father's house, he just didn't sit on His hands and just pray (I'm sure He did pray for the people there...) for the people doing the injustice. He made a chord of three ropes, tied it together and cleansed the Temple. Now, am I saying we should go and "cleanse" Mr. Oliphant? Of course not!! But we shouldn't just sit passively by and say nothing about it either. We need a bunch more folk to stand up and do something about it! Say, not read the Washington Post anymore? Or not read the Washington Post online anymore? Perhaps we should do something like that!

To the previous comment - Bob, yes, Jesus cleansed the temple.. however he was not concerned about cleansing the government or the speech of unbelievers. What will be the point of retribution against Mr. Oliphant? Will lives be changed, people saved or shone the love of Christ?

I also find it interesting how many people on CT are calling Obama everything but satan incarnate but feel justified in their own self-righteousness and anger when someone else plays the same game.

As a Pentecostal, Spirit-filled believer myself, it does not surprise me to see the world call the things of God foolishness..of course the logic of man will see speaking in tongues and hearing from God as irrational delusions. Did Jesus not say that the world would hate and despise us, that we are to be set apart? Jesus was ridiculed, often alone, and misunderstood.. this is the cross we have to bear daily. We should return ridicule with love. Walking in the love of Christ is the BEST way to change the hearts of unbelievers.

To the previous comment - Bob, yes, Jesus cleansed the temple.. however he was not concerned about cleansing the government or the speech of unbelievers. What will be the point of retribution against Mr. Oliphant? Will lives be changed, people saved or shone the love of Christ?

We wonder why our country is not what it used to be, you are part of that answer.
If we could do away with the extremely liberal media I believe we could have a fair chance of getting our country back on track!

I too was surprised that the cartoon was published, considering how timid the media is nowadays, but I completely support its message. Pentecostalism should be mocked and derided. If real Christians are too afraid to strike this serpent in our bosom, then the job falls to the secular world. Do we really want a VP (and possibly President) who rolls around on the floor babbling baby-talk, who has surrendered her mind to some authoritarian pastor/cult leader, and who believes that every thought and emotion she has is a direct message from God?? Not me, and I think most Americans are with me.

Wow, what hatred I have seen on this Christianity Today website from some posters. Particularly, those who are condoning this atrocity and even worse, saying it was a good thing, "Robin Ford" Who do you think you are? I personally think you may be a former pentecostal because most of the "formers" are extremely bitter due to the fact that they have been in the truth and know the truth and now refuse to abide by the Word of God; therefore, they think it's ok to spew hatred at us who are still believers, why? To the other poster "bryan crosswhite" who says Pentecostals regularly offend and make fun of others.....I don't know who you have been affiliated with, but you obviously met the wrong person. I, nor my friends, certainly not my pastor ever "make fun of" or "offend" other people because of their beliefs. It is my job to teach them the truth by living as an example, not judging them because they believe differently from me, I have many, many friends that I adore who are not of my faith. I would be SO incredibly pleased and excited to have Sarah Palin as VP, preferably president of the US, I think Robin Ford is going to be unpleasantly surprised when he/she sees just how many Americans are not of his/her opinion on Sarah Palin.

The highly intelligent Muslim accepts this trash; maybe he should re-locate to the country of his roots and pull this nonsense in a Muslim country. Not happening - I am actually wasting my words on this. Why don't we see these two people for what they are.

sorry, bryan crosswhite, i meant to address deana holmes for accusing us of judging other people, i looked at the post wrong. My apologies!

This is down right funny.

It would be terrible to have McCain as our president and Palin as our VP.

We need to move our country back on track, it's being over ran with right-wingers and all one has to do is look at where we are now. McCain is no different than Bush, especially when it comes to the Economy.

For everyone taking offense to the cartoon, get over it. You do not have the right to NOT be offended. If you don't like it, stop looking at it and move along. You lack a sense of humor if you can't mock your own faith.

That is the most un-American cartoon to imply that in the country of religious tolorance Palin's religion is non-sense.
If the washington post would crack open a bible they would find that salvation come after recieving the holy spirit which is evident with the speaking of tongues. Palin is on the right track and everyone wants the security that she has in a 100% biblically based standard. You can call her out on her religion all you want but in the end that just lets everyone know that she is a "old time" christian who actually has morales. The world now is so carismatic about faiths and beliefs and were does that get you. In my prospective your either for God or against him and Palin is not a fencerider. She know hard core or the bible which though tongues is written about it is radical and inconvient. You can scream and holler and mummer jibberish at kick off but if you lift your hands to worship and speak in Gods holy tongue your radical. She does do it to be seen by anyone but by God. For people to call her out on her personal spirituality is wrong. GO PALIN!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE RADICAL CHRISTIAN.........................PENTECOSTAL
not settling for the fence!!

Mr Oliphant is indeed ignorant and unlearned. Claiming to be an artist is no excuse for the blatant disregard of truth and faith. To recklessly yield the printed matter as such, is indeed proof of the character of one who so oftens does so with no regard.
There are people from nearly every religion who believe and speak in tongues. Pentecost is an experience, not a religion.

YOU LACK A SENSE OF HUMOR IF YOU CAN'T MOCK YOUR OWN FAITH? WHAT KIND OF TALK IS THAT?. WHO WOULD WANT A GOD THAT YOU WOULD GO AROUND MAKING FUN OF? ALL I CAN SAY IS THERE IS A PAYDAY AT THE END OF THE ROAD. WHEN THEY DIE, THEY WILL STAND BEFORE THE ULTIMATE JUDGE. THEY WILL RECEIVE THEIR JUST REWARD. IF IT HAD BEEN A PENTECOSTAL WHO MADE FUN OF THE OTHER FAITHS WHAT WOULD HAPPEN. AMERICA NEEDS TO GET BACK TO THE BASICS WHICH IS THE BIBLE. ABORTION- IS THE SHEDDING OF INNOCENT BLOOD SO YES IT IS IN THE BIBLE. HOW INNOCENT CAN YOU GET THAN A NEW BABY.??? JESUS IS THE ANSWER FOR THE WORLDS PROBLEMS NOT MAN ANYWAY. WE ARE ONLY VESSELS THAT CAN BE USED TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT. THE CHOICE IS OURS.OBAMA DOESN'T COME ACROSS AS SOMEONE WHO CAN TRULY BE TRUSTED.YES HE IS A VERY SMOOTH TALKER BUT LACKS WHAT AMERICA REALLY NEEDS. WE NEED TO PRAY FOR OUR LEADERS, THAT THEY WILL GET DOWN ON THEIR KNEES AND AND GOD WHAT AND HOW HE WANTS THEM TO LEAD THIS NATION.THIS IS THE ONLY HOPE WE AS A NATION HAS. IF PEOPLE DON'T LIKE AMERICA, THERE ARE ALOT OF COUNTRIES, HELP YOUR SELF TO ANY OF THEM. I AM A BORN-AGAIN BELIEVER AND I'M PROUD OF IT.!!!

I am a Catholic, although I don't speak in toungues, I believe it is a gift from God. I, too am offended at how Mr. Oliphant mocked the person of God and the gift of the Holy Spirit. Speaking in toungues was the first manifestation of the Holy Spirit which happened during the Pentecost. It is not something to joke about. I pity Mr. Oliphant because he has just committed a sin against the Holy Spirit and it is the only one sin that cannot be forgiven by GOD. Mr. Oliphant, you may have enjoyed poking fun at the work of the Holy Spirit but it may have cost you the chance to be forgiven by God. What you sow is what you reap.

cool site :)

I have not problem with cartoons critical of any faith. For instance, the Danish cartoons critical of Islamic jihad warriors were, for the most part, spot-on, and described a lot of truths which are self-evident to anyone who isn't otherwise brainwashed.

But this one, on the other hand, is just plain stupid. There is no truth to be found in it. It's just another dose of the Left's blind hatred of Christians, that's all.

I think that its sad that in this country we would abuse our right to speak freely. I think that as Americans we honestly have too many 'freedoms'. When we degrade others for their freedom and choice of faith what does this say about us as a united nation? I was more of a McCain fan, but I did not appreciate republicans bashing Obama about his pastor. Its just wrong and so offensive.

Three things that are VERY personal choices for anyone, are 1) politics; and 2) religion, and; 3) sex.

These are NOT subjects to be discussed in polite or mixed company at any given moment. There is a time and a place to discuss each one,and that doesn't necessarily mean they should be discussed all at the same time,

I have yet to meet, in my 65+ years, anyone who was able to literally speak in tongues. While some of those people have a strong faith in God, it's their actions, behavior and choices made outside the Church that make me question where their heart and mind truly are, and its not anything close to being a "Good Christian!"

A GOOD Christian doesn't force his or her faith on others as if it were the only truth. Their actions speak louder than words. Anyone can profess to have faith and beliefe in Jesus, the Gospels, the New Testament; it is their behavior towards those less fortunate that is important.

Cartoons are not only used in manga comics and entertainment, they are also used in politics now to endorse candidates just like this cartoon here.
