The prayer from John McCain's pastor

"Father, we think that he has been prepared for such a time as this."

House Minority Leader John Boehner had to bang the gavel twice to get people’s attention to stop popping the balloons and start praying.

These are the words Sen. John McCain’s pastor Dan Yeary prayed:

"Almighty God, we are grateful for the gift called America. We are thankful for the freedom to celebrate what we are doing and have done this week. We have repeatedly invoked your blessing on our country. And as we do, we are reminded of the words you gave to Solomon: if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray, and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, you will hear from heaven and heal our land.

So we pray, humble us Lord, humble us as a people to serve you, help us to seek your face alone. Give us the courage to turn from our self-centered, wicked ways. Hear us, oh Lord, as we ask you to heal our land. We ask you to still the storms … tonight that we ask that you protect our young men and young women who are protecting us from terrorism.

Lord, we ask a very special blessing on our brother John McCain. (cheering)
Father, we think that he has been prepared for such a time as this. We ask that you give him wisdom and courage, wisdom that comes from you, and courage that comes from his relationship with you. We ask your blessing and divine protection on Cindy and the children. May they see such honor and integrity in their parents that they rise up and call them blessed.

Oh Lord, in humility, we ask that you remind us that we cannot put our country first unless you are foremost. For as Jesus taught his disciplines, thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen."

My prayer for America is that the Founding Fathers would for once again be totally respected and followed instead of full blast aheady now the most abusive and far-reaching Empire the world has ever known. Yes, never ever did any past Empirec circle the globe with its military power, while George Washington said these eternal words: "Overgrown military establishements are under any form of government inauspicious to liberty and are to be regarded as particularly hostile to Republican liberty". Yes and here words from James Madison: "Of all enemies to public liberty, war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes; and armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instrument for bringing the many under the domination of the few". Thomas Jefferson said this: "The principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scales". So, now every American is saddled with a bill to be paid at the tune of $175,000.00 and growing, to get the Federal Government out of bankruptcy. So, I rate this prayer of this Preacher really no better than deserving an F. In essence he demanded of God to bless America on its road called: IMPERIALISM.

You are a political hack......your comments are nothing but BS! And how did we get to be saddled with the debt of $175000? It is called 'social' programs and over stretching of the government arm! Of which I am sure you want to continue to expand! The founding fathers were inspired by God to create this great land! I like how you use excerpts that may possibly support your side...but taken out of context! Cripes....Satan can quote scriptures too! We tried it once with Jesus...didn't work! Watch who is whispering in YOUR ear!

"IMPERIALSIM".....where is our king.....I would venture to say in heaven above? If spreading liberty, democracry, and the Living Word, humanitarian aid, missionaries, hope, and least of which money....makes a country imperialist.......then I reject your version of "IMPERIALISM" you set forth and support my version. Which country gives the most in the entire world (both individually and corporately)? The answer? It has to be a 3 way: France/China/Russia!

I would propose to you that conservatives/most republicans are better on poverty and meeting the needs of the 'needy'. Your 'so to speak' test analyzed ALL Americans.....you never implicated a party?! I would say that if you are on any medication or use any (including Excedrin) then stop this instant and send it to people that need it more.....buy it all! Be the bright and shining star and do it....do your "good deed' for the day! Earn your salvation from your god, worker harder and smarter! Oh by the way....salvation is given freely and not earned....so good luck with that!

Dear H.K.,

Christians, followers of Christ, believe that God is sovereign. God raised America up for such a time as this and will tear America down if it His will. Christ said, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and these things shall be added unto you" (the kingdom of God and righteousness). Your comment to the prayer shows carelessness with regard to the message of the prayer and a lack of understanding. You have a right to voice your opinion, but surely you could have found a more appropriate place to post your diatribe.

well said

the problem with this prayer is a pastor invoking God to bless one political candidate over another. this demeans prayer and is a garish
witness to the seekers who are already cynical and believe that all Christians are right wing extremists. it plays off as a micro version of mark twain's "the war prayer". we get tired of seeing THE KINGDOM appropriated for empire agendas.
grace and peace

Chas,

We are commanded by God to bring our petitions to Him. The pastor prayed for wisdom and courage for John McCain and for protection for His family. What did you find objectionable about that?

Vote your conscience and trust God.

Eric, I truly wish our debt was only $175,000...Its 9.6 trillion and counting...see the national debt clock if you don't believe me. Some sources estimate it to be even higher. Most of this is held by China so I guess we won't be challenging them too much on human rights issues. If you believe that most of this is in social welfare programs..you're nuts. The DOD has the largest share of the national budget and since (dishonestly in my opinion) we don't include Iraq or Afghanistan in that then its even higher. You see my problem with what I see here in some of these God and America comments is that nationalism and religion have become so mixed in this country that we are in grave grave danger of idolatry. Last time I checked God wasn't so hot on that. See the 1st commandment if you have doubts. I think this country has done great things and it has done terrible things. Just as most Empires have done in their time. We are human after all. This is not the Kingdom of God, although we are to work for that Kingdom here and now. That is the tension of being "in the world but not of it" after all. To work for things as they should be, not accept them as they are. You may disagree about just how to do that but I think that it requires us to to not only feed the hungry and clothe the naked but address the injustices and inequalities in society that cause hunger and nakedness in the first place.

That phrase "for such a time as this" was widely used by evangelicals in reference to the Current Occupant of the White House -- for a while. Surely God moves in a mysterios way.

Heather,

I agree with a lot of what you've said, but look at it from another point of view. God fights the war, but we have to show up. We are human, as you say, and are not perfect. We are never going to achieve a perfect balance between our outward influence and our inner comfort - as individuals or as a nation - and are certainly never going to be perfectly just. God has blessed this nation with great power. Our confidence should remain in Him.

gershgwilli,
this is not a question of voting, of who i would or would not vote for. it is about the use of religion in politics, and the misuse of public prayer. in this case the prayer itself is not the problem, it is the forum that is inappropriate.
i thank you for your thoughts on petitioning the Lord with prayer, and respectfully invoke matthew 6:5-6.

So DOD budgets are useless, huh? I better tear my clothes and sit in ashes! Oh whoa is me! Better send the Peace Corp. to solve military issues then. What is the budget to pay for? Defense, infrastructure.....and that should be about it.

No, I can actually separate nationalism and God. This country is not a god to me.....it is a blessing from God not a curse.
Remember that the poor will always be with us? I am not saying to help them....teach them to fish and not just give them a fish.

What are these injustices and inequalities you speak of in society? Keep working for your ideal utopia...usually it ends up in tyranny.

Cha,

I see your point. However, I think the passage you referred to was Christ's teaching on sincere prayer versus hollow words spoken in public to impress men. Each instance of public prayer then should be judged on a case by case basis. Do you think the prayer above was sincere or to impress the convention delagates and swing voters?

Ok, all this Giod raised uo America stuff is crap. Clearly in the New Covenant god trancends political powers so his people exist in all contexts, thats such a load of bull to still be thinking in terms of any country being God's mandated nation.

We were called to bless and encouraged people. The prayer is fine.

The early Christians and Jesus never got involved in politics. That is not what a Christian is called to do. Our Kingdom is not of this world. Bill Scudder

I think the evil of abortion is the greatest evil in our nation.
It tells women it is moral/legal/natural to kill your very own child, flesh of your flesh. We are experiencing the ramifications-children are "throw-aways". Violence in the womb continues after birth too.

We need to eliminate prayer at all political conventions. Politicians need to stop asking God to "bless America" at the end of every speech. It's a frivolous and meaningless waste of words.

God rules everything. God rules mankind and all man's inventions. And since politics is a human invention, God rules over it. How can you possibly shut God out of anything.

Let's not pray anywhere but in church and at home. Let's not pray for America as a nation because we don't want God blessing us and taking sides.

Let's all just put God away until we feel it's appropriate to bring Him out. After all, we don't want to offend anyone.
