Palin supports federal marriage amendment, says her faith has been mocked

Sarah Palin expressed support for a Constitutional amendment to define marriage as between a man and a woman, the opposite of the stance her running mate takes.

Palin told David Brody of the Christian Broadcasting Network that she would like an amendment similar to one she voted for in Alaska. "I wish on a federal level that that's where we would go because I don't support gay marriage," she said. Back in 2004, John McCain called the amendment unnecessary and un-Republican.

Brody posted a series of interviews with Palin, and gay marriage is the main policy stance she discusses. The most interesting answers are about her faith, but she doesn't go very specifically into how it affects her policies.

Brody asks Palin about the shots taken at her because of her faith and she responded by saying:

Yeah, and I think the saddest part of that is that faith, not just my faith, faith and God in general has been mocked through this campaign, and that breaks my heart, and that is unfair for others who share a faith in God and choose to worship our Lord in whatever private manner that they deem fit, and my faith has always been pretty personal.

She continues about how her how her faith is very personal.

I haven't really worn it on my sleeve. I haven't been out there preaching it. I've always been of the mind that you can walk the walk. You just don't have to be talking the talk about your beliefs, so just wanting maybe my life to be able to reflect my faith. So it's always been pretty personal, and that was kind of a surprise in the last couple of months that people would misconstrue and spin anything that has to do with my faith or anybody else's and turn it into something to be mocked.

Dan Gilgoff at Beliefnet points out that 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry said the line about wearing faith on his sleeve during his '04 convention speech. Hillary Clinton also used a similar line at the 2007 Sojourner's Forum: "And, you know, I take my faith very seriously and very personally. And I come from a tradition that is perhaps a little too suspicious of people who wear their faith on their sleeves."

Back to Palin, here's more on her faith and how she relies on God for strength.

I'm going to keep plugging away at this and I'm going to keep seeking God's guidance and His wisdom and His favor and His grace, for me, for my family, for this campaign, for our nation. Again, no matter what anybody else says about it, it's between me and God, and I am so thankful that that he has strengthened me with this understanding and this belief that I can count on Him. I can reach out to Him asking for that strength, asking for the blessings that He so freely gives and I don't know how anybody would want to do this if they didn't have real strong faith in God that He's got it all under control.

Brody also asks Palin about her baptism. "Well, it was a neat thing to be able to do," she says. Her description is fairly generic, with no mention of Jesus. She focuses on her role in bettering the world.

And I knew that I wouldn't be able to handle all that was laid out in front of me in life if I did not have strong faith in my Creator, a mission towards trying to fulfill my own destiny and trying to make the world a bit better for others, so that the manifestation of that belief that I had, I was very aware of what I could do about it at the time, and at the time it was to take that that public step to be baptized and the principle behind that too is as you're raised up out of the water it's like, 'hey world, this is my confession of faith that I'm going to try to lead and live my life according to my belief that God as my Creator has good plans for all of us, and we are to seek those plans and seek the destiny that he has for all of us.'

This article is somewhat bias. It points out VP Palin's faults but it doesn't point out that Senator Obama supports gay unions.

When she is talking about faith maybe she can expalin the youtube witchcraft video

First, Christians concerned about gay marriage should not focus on what Palin thinks, but on McCain. He's running for president, not her. But on the idea that her faith has been mocked: Polls show that 17% of people (higher among evangelicals, I believe) think Obama is a Muslim. They think he's lying about his faith, which he articulates - in writing and at Warren's faith forum - much more clearly than McCain ever has. Obama's pastor spoke prophetically about the sins of the United States and he's called "hate filled" and "anti-american." He didn't say anything worse than what Amos, Isaiah, or even John the Baptist called out Israel for. (NOT that I think there's an equivalence between the US and ancient Israel.) Obama's faith has been far more "mocked" than Palin's has.

Who cares at this point?

Gov. Palin might get more respect if she wasn't against civil rights and the First Amendment. Aside from leaning on a librarian to have only Palin approved books on the shelves...the so called Marriage Amendment is all about keeping the people that Palin obviously wants to disappear, from petitioning their governments for redress of their grievances. This is a right so fundamental that even Charles Manson has it, but your gay neighbor shouldn't? Shame on her.

I take issue with her comment, "God in general has been mocked through this campaign." I've been paying pretty close attention, and I've not heard anyone mocking God- religion- yes, and deservedly so. Sometimes the way God is distorted by religion deserved mocking.

Senator Obama doesn't support gay marriage, just equal rights under the law for everyone regardless of status.

Neither party supports gay marraige.

... perhaps hottopics would care to explain the youtube video. Or maybe not. Wright, Pfleger, Hagee... haven't we had enough? Maybe we should go on to Farrakhan and the "Savior" comments?

Why am I even taking the time to respond?

a) What are her policies?
b) What is her faith?
c) How would her faith effect her policies?

d) Is she getting flak for her faith?

RAISED IN A NON-DEMONATIONAL CHURCH. I AM WITH SARAH AND THE ASSEMBLEY OF GOD CHURCH. I HAVE MORE FAITH AND ONE DAY AT A TIME WITH GOD.I PRAY IN THE SPIRIT. I LOVE EVERY ONE. VOLUNTEER IN A MISSION FOR 12 YEARS AND THAT TAKES FAITH AND TO BE ABLE TO LOVE PEOPLE AND ALLOW THEM TO FIND THEIR FAITH IN GOD.

WE MUST ALLOW PEOPLE TO MAKE MISTAKES SO THEY CAN LEARN TO GET IT RIGHT WITH GOD. ONE OF THE BEST ORGINATIONS IS AA AND AL ANON. THE 12 STEP PROGRAM IS FAITH.

I HAVE FRIENDS IN ALL FAITHS AND WE HAVE GOOD DISCUSSIONS ON GOD AND JESUS. I ACCEPT THEIR FAITH AND PRAY WITH THEM AND THAT IS WHAT GOD IS ALL ABOUT.

I WILL VOTE FOR MCCAIN/PALIN AS I CAN'T SEE MYSELF VOTING FOR OBAMA A MAN WHO WANTS TO GIVE TO THE POOR AND TAKE FROM THE RICH. THE PEOPLE ON WELFARE NEED TO FIND JOBS, THAT IS WHY WE NEED A BALANCE IN JOBS NOT GOING OVER SEAS.

I DON'T RESPECT OBAMA!! HE MADE A STATEMENT THAT "I WANT MY GIRLS TO HAVE MORAL STANDARDS BUT IF THEY MAKE A MISTAKE I DON'T WANT THEM BURDENED WITH A BABY". THAT IS KILLING HIS GRAND CHILDREN.

GOD BLESS AMERICA AND MCCAIN/PALIN AND SHE IS THE TYPE OF PERSON THIS COUNTRY WAS STARTED ON! IN GOD WE TRUST! I AM SURE IF OBAMA GET IN THAT WILL BE TAKEN OFF OUR MONEY, HE WILL HAVE HIS OWN FLAG AND PRESIDENTAL SEAL. OBAMA SEAL!

I FIGURED OUT IF I SELL MY HOUSE AFTER OBAMA GET TO BE PRESIDNET I WILL PAY 39% CAPITOL GAIN TO HELP THE 22 MILLION ILLEGALS HE WANTS TO SUPPORT. HE WILL BRING MORE IMMIGRANTS INTO THE U.S.A EVEN IF WE HAVE MORE AND MORE UNEMPLOYMENT.

THE ONLY WAY THE AMERICAN PEOPLE CAN GET BACK ON THEIR FEET IS BOYCOTT FOREIGN PRODUCTS ESPECIALLY FROM CHINA, CHINESE JUNK, THAT IS SELLING THE GOV BAD FOOD AND LEAD IN EVERYTHING.

IN OBAMA'S BOOK HE STATED HE WILL BE WITH THE MUSLIMS. IS THAT A GOOD CHOICE! THE MUSLIMS DON'T LIKE US! OBAMA'S PLAN IS LIKE RUSSIA WHEN THEY HELPED CUBA.

MY FRIEND FROM CUBA WERE ALLOWED TO LEAVE AFTER THE GOVERNMENT TOOK THEIR HOME, BANK ACCOUNT AND LEFT THEM WITH THE CLOTHES ON THEIR BACK AND A PASSAGE TO THE U.S.A. THEY LOST EVERYTHING TO THE CUBAN GOVERNMNET.

THE DEMOCRATS AND OBAMA WILL HAVE SO MANY EAR MARKS THAT THE TAX PAYER IS PAYING. BIDEN IS # 3 IN THE U.S.A IN EAR MARKS. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT OBAMA AND HIS WIFE. THE MEDIA HAS TURNED SARAH LIFE UPSIDE DOWN BUT THEY SURE HAVEN'T DONE THAT TO OBAMA. WHEN I SEE JESSIE JACKSON SUPPORTING OBAMA THAT TELLS ME THAT HE IS WAITING IN THE BACK GROUND TO PICK UP LOTS OF EAR MARKS.

WERE WAS JESSIE JACKSON WHEN THE FARMERS WERE FLOODED IN THE MID WEST?

POWELL BACKING OBAMA IS A GOOD THING AND A BAD THING. AT LEAST HE WILL GET SOME KIND OF AN APPOINTMENT AND HE CAN KEEP AN EYE ON OBAMA. I AM SURE HE WILL WISH HE BACKED MCCAIN/PALIN. I DIDN'T LIKE THE IDEA OF HIM PUTTNG PALIN DOWN. SHE HAS MORE EXPERIENCE THAN OBAMA. SHE WILL MAKE A GREAT PRESIDENT IN 2012.
PRAY FOR OUR COUNTRY AND OUR LEADERS. PRAY FOR OBAMA! HIS ASSOCIATION WITH A WRIGHT ISN'T GOOD. IF I WAS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT I WOULD BE IN A MIXED CHURCH THAT TAUGHT LOVE AND NOT HATE FOR MY COUNTRY AND FELLOW AMERICANS.

WHY WOULD YOU WANT A PRESIDENT WHO WILL NOT SALUTE OUR FLAG! HE ISN'T VERY PATROTIC. I AM SURE THAT THE AMERICAN FLAG WILL BE TAKEN OUT OF THE WHITE HOUSE AND WE PROBABLY WON'T BE ABLE TO FLY ONE OUT SIDE OF OUR HOMES. OBAMA WILL TAKE OUR GUNS. I GUESS I DON'T LIKE WHAT THIS GUYS STANDS FOR!!

One of the first things Barack Obama would do in his presidency would be to sign the Freedom of Choice bill, destroying 40 years worth of pro-life legislation nationwide. One of his next top priorities is to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act, which says that marriage is only between one man and one woman. This is the antithesis of what Gov. Sarah Palin would advocate if she becomes Vice President.

Was this suppose to be a snide remark: Baptism - "Her description is fairly generic, with no mention of Jesus". Jesus come FIRST and then BAPTISM. I am disappointed in Christianity Today. This article seemed bias to me.

If you do NOT wear your faith on your sleeve, what good is it! Jesus said, TAKE UP MY CROSS, BE WILLING TO DIE FOR ME, I do not think those comments means we are meek about our faith.

Why is there even a debate in Christian circles about this election? Obama obviously believes himself to be some kind of false saviour to this nation. He won't come out and say it but he doesn't deny it either. He doesn't have supporters, he has FOLLOWERS. It's CREEPY. It's a little "this present darkness" to me. What's up with him and Oprah and all this new age culty stuff? Spiritual discernment has a place, here, I think.

Jim Said: Sarah Palin is against Civil Rights and the First Ammendment. Huh?
I know she is for Civil Rights of woman, minorities and of course the unborn. As for 1st Amendment what evidence is there of that. Do you just say these things in a vacuum. Hoped by this time our conversation would be more informed and fair. Weird.

The Defense of Marriage act should be abolished. It's really a Defense of Bigotry Act and shameless gay bashing. Former President Clinton and the people who voted for it should apologize.

DOMA is a moral blight on the country, and brings directly to mind all the depraved "anti-miscegenation" laws that were on the books in way, way too many states, even up into this century, though they were unenforceable after 1967.

Love, honor, responsibility and respect...things of which DOMA disrespects, denigrates and discourages.

The US is suppose to be an experiment in democracy, not an authoritarian exercise in bigotry and fear mongering, as it too often has been, even in still living memory. Gov. Palin should be quite ashamed of herself...but does she know what shame is?

One element of faith, in my opinion, is stewardship of money. Apparently the Palin's don't do that according to biblical principals. They reported income of $166,000 for 2007 and charitable contributions of about $7,000 for 2006 and 2007. That's under 5%. Anyone who makes $166,000 a year ought to be able to title.

FIRST OF ALL I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY ALL THIS BASHING ON SARAH,S RELIGIOUS BELIEFS,I DONOT BELIVE IN GAY MARRIAGES I AM NOT SAYING I HATE THE GAYS .I AM SAYING IF YOU ARE A TRUE BORN-AGAIN CHRISTIAN AND BELIVE THE BIBLE IT SAYS THAT GOD MADE MAN AND WOMAN,IT ALSO TELLS WHY SODOM AND GOMORROW WAS DESTROYED BECAUSE OF THE SIN OF HOMOSEXUALTY.WE ARE AS CHRISTIANS TO LOVE THE SINNER BUT HATE THE SIN,NONE OF US ARE PERFECT NOT ONE OF US WE ALL FAIL AT TIMESBUT AS ONE OF THE COMMENTS SAID SHE IS NOT RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT BUT FOR VISE-PRESIDENT AND SHE DOES HAVE A RIGHT TO SAY WHAT SHE BELIVES JUST AS ALL OF US GOD IS GOD AND HE DOESNT CHANGE WE NEED TO PRAY FOR OUR LEADERS

For those stating that the federal marriage amendment would be bigotry, bigotry involves discrimination on the basis of a characteristic present from birth. That has not been proven for this specific issue by neutral scientists. Others who have claimed they have proven are unable to put forth research that actually withstands testing.

Regarding the comments by Gregory P., I wasn't aware that the USA is an "experiment in democracy". I thought it was a republic of individual states who were to be self governing at the state level. To impose the "experiment" on each other isn't what the original framers had in mind. Thus the need for a Federal Government.

Regarding the issue of Sarah Palin's belief about gay marriage, it takes courage to stand for righteousness, especially when it has become politically incorrect to do so. Contrary to what the secular media and humanistic judges and legislators would have us believe, it is an act of love to say "no" to the imposition of unrighteousness on a society.

Don't forget that John the Baptist prepared the people of Israel for Jesus with his words of love, calling them to repent so they could receive the savior. Unfortunately most don't understand that what J the B was doing was loving...although I'm sure the Father saw it that way. Someone must do that today as well. Thank God for Sarah Palin's courage and conviction.

Mezzomah is absolutely right.Good worldview from Biblical perspective, may your kind increase ,USA need more people like you.
