Politician Fights Back After 'Godless' Ad

Sarah Pulliam Bailey

A mini politics and religion war continues in North Carolina after Sen. Elizabeth Dole's "Godless" ad about her challenger.

Democratic opponent Kay Hagan sued Dole and released her own television ad after Dole's campaign aired an earlier ad.

Hagan says in the ad that the campaign is about fixing the economy, "not bearing false witness against fellow Christians."

"Elizabeth Dole's attacks on my Christian faith are offensive," she says in the ad. "She even faked my voice in her TV ad to make you think I don't believe in God. Well, I believe in God. I taught Sunday School. My faith guides my life, and Sen. Dole knows it."

Dole's earlier ad said Hagan took "Godless money."

"A leader of the Godless Americans PAC recently held a secret fundraiser for Kay Hagan," the the first 30-second ad says. "Godless Americans and Kay Hagan. She hid from cameras. Took godless money. What did Kay Hagan promise in return?"

The ad ends with an unknown woman's voice calling out, "There is no God."

Update: Here's the latest ad from Dole.

Sen. Dole should be quite ashamed of herself...and there is not religious test for high office anyway, despite what Dole is not so tacitly suggesting.

This is what I mean! Once again, this is why it becomes so tough to reach the lost! This election is revealing the heart of everyone! Shame on her! She owes this woman an ad with an apology in it! May God be with them both!

Call it what it is! "Godless" means just that, "Less God or without God." Why should Hagin be affended, PAC is a "Godless" orgnaization, they make no claim to being a Christian organization. If she accepted the money from this organization for her campaign and they make no claim to being a Christian organization, operating by Christian principles, then they are what they are, a "Godless." If Hagan thinks this will put her in bad light with Christian voters, don't accept the money! Otherwise, stand by your decision and acknowledge it!

I have not been following this race since I don't live in this state. Kay Hagan says attacks on her religious faith are “false,” but the ad says she took money from an organization that calls itself “Godless Americans PAC.” This article leads people to believe that Elisabeth Dole’s advertising only questioned Hagan’s devotion to her religious faith, when actually it questions Hagan’s faith in light of the people she is taking money from. Whether Dole is right or wrong depends on whether Hagan took this PAC’s money or not. Well, did she? I’m a little surprised Christianity Today didn’t ask this former Sunday School teacher that question.

That lady who says "There is no god". You know something? She's right.

The answer is no, she didn't take money from the PAC, thus
the lawsuit. This story has been covered elsewhere; I think she
had a fundraiser at the home of some guy that had an affiliation,
but the Godless Americans weren't there. Surprise: No
grand atheist plot, just Christian-on-Christian slander.

My, My, My. Politics really brings out the worst in us,
don't they!!!! I have a feeling that God, no doubt, hates
politics. How He must "cringe" with all the mud slinging, unGodly
tatics, and downright lies that are being used these days......

Dole was one of my heroes and a real hope for women in the highest level of political leadership and these ads (as well as some of the McCain-Palin negative ads)once again show me not to put faith in the people of God but in God only.It is a shame that the "win at all costs" philosophy is being professed by believers.

I would never vote for any Democrat as long as abortion remains part of their party platform. Democrats are on the attack against Evangelical/conservative Christianity. The fact that they think a woman has a right to murder her unborn child is proof enough that they are "godless." If Kay Hagan is not godless, maybe she should come out as a pro-life candidate??? Maybe if Kay Hagan is not godless, she should stand against homosexual marriage???

If shoe fits, wear it. Godless is godless!

Lord have mercy on us.
Christ have mercy on us.
Lord have mercy on us.
