Was Sarah Palin's SNL appearance funny?

Sarah Palin appeared on Saturday Night Live, and there was, yet again, a slight religion reference.

After actor Alec Baldwin pretends to mistake Palin for actress Tina Fey, he says, "I see. Forgive me. I feel I must say this: You are way hotter in person."

Palin replied, "Thank you, and I must say, your brother Stephen is my favorite Baldwin brother." Stephen Baldwin starred in the Usual Suspects and is an outspoken born-again Christian.

Time magazine included a response from Alec Baldwin about his brother's conversion.

How do you feel about your brother Stephen's conversion to Evangelical Christianity?

"If it wasn't political, I probably wouldn't have anything to say. But the Evangelicals who say AIDS is payback for homosexuals - you don't see liberals saying Hurricane Ike is payback for the Bush family living in Texas. I think that my brother really is very devout and very dedicated, and none of that bothers me until it becomes political."

The family I watched it with was not very impressed with her short performance. She was a good sport to bob her head through the rap routine, but she had so few lines to make watching the whole SNL skit worth it.

Comments

I thought both were very funny. I laughed.

I don't really blame Alec, but he needs to look past those who follow Christ to see Christ Himself before he rejects his one and only hope for eternity.

I enjoyed watching Sarah Palin and find the SNL skits very funny. When it stops being funny is when they want to attack her reputation. She's to be admired!

Sarah Palin is truly an amazing lady, highly qualified, brilliant, and 1st class all the way. We'd be very blessed to have her as VP

Go Sarah!!,,,,,,,Jesus had a sense of humor as well!!

Must hand it to Palin for being a good sport. At the same time its possible that she doesn't quite get that SNL is making fun or her, and what Alec Baldwin said, while tongue and cheek reflects a sincere sentiment. About Alec Baldwin, his comments regarding his brother could not be more spot on. Ms. Turner its pretty hard to look beyond those who "claim" to follow Christ, when so called followers' behavior is as good as a reason as there is to not want to look beyond them to see who it is they claim to be following. Evangelicals by and far have become "bad" advertisment for Jesus.

Palin is waaaaay better looking than Fey and I second Susan's comment too.

Sarah Palin has some good qualities. She seems to be a dedicated Christian (though some of her actions leave me wondering even about that; see later). But she's totally unqualified to fill in for McCain if he were to become unable to serve, which is the main responsibility of a vice president. She can't even utter an articulate sentence when asked about serious issues "off script." And she's a mean-spirited liar. For anyone to say the false and anger-inciting things she's said about Obama (a fellow Christian, must I add) is simply immoral. Maybe Christians feel qualifications aren't important. But think about it; when God wanted someone to work with the educated and worldly Gentiles, he chose Paul, who was equally well educated and worldly-wise, rather than the less educated Peter and other disciples from more lowly backgrounds.) And whatever you think about qualifications, morality definitely matters. For heaven's sake, wake up!

I laughed at both skits! Sarah has guts to do SNL, which shows she has a sense of humor. The appearance may have broadened her appeal as VP candidate. She is such a classy lady and didn't do anything distasteful or embarrassing, which is a mark of integrity - an important trait for anyone aiming for the White House.

Amy Pohler was the amazing one. I think Sarah Palin's appearance did nothing to boost her standing. In fact, I think the joke was on her. In trying to be hip and "with it" (bobbing back and forth to the rap song), I think she looked foolish. It felt cheap to me.
I don't care if she claims to be a Christian, she doesn't tell the truth, and she tries to alienate people. No matter who wins this election, there is a lot of healing that is going to have to take place. Does she contribute to that process?

hilarious. Believe me, her ability to laugh at herself and the other goofy politicians is refreshing. They mostly take themselves way too seriously.

Who cares whether she was funny or not? If one is a from one side of "the aisle" she was hilarious, if from the other, not so much. So what's the point of even asking the question in C.T.?

Her appearance was an embarrassment. It is not funny – or a model of Christian virtue – to accept being called ‘hot’ by a man who is not one’s husband. I found this to be shocking – and then to have Christianity Today promote this behavior? Amazing. Further this is not presidential. So sorry, this is not a role model for our daughters to emulate - whether as women of God - or even politicians! She lost a lot of my respect.
She should have looked at a script before she went on! What was she thinking???

Sarah Palin brilliant??? I guess we have changed the standard for measuring intellectual prowess, just as we have changed them for assessing political experience and judgment. SNL is hilariously funny, but deeply embarassing for those of us who take being "evangelical" seriously. Yes, you can blame it all on the "liberal" media, and they certainly have their agenda. But Palin has played right into their hands, and her performance in the campaign has been deplorable. I suppose you could say she is being a good sport, but I wonder if she is even smart enough to know how she has contributed, quite naturally, to their satire. Unless she is already looking forward to 2012. Perhaps she is more shrewd than brilliant ...

SNL is always funny. However, there is nothing funny about Sarah Palin. She is a cynical attempt to fracture this nation and to co opt the women's vote. She is to women what Clarence Thomas is to the African American. And she is not funny.

I totally disagree with her politics, but I found her likeable and warmly funny on SNL. Sarah Palin is neither the monster that the left tries to portray nor the saint that many Christians would like her to be.

Gov. Palin participated in Saturday Night Live for the sake of her children. Her children will remember their mom as being a good sport to go on SNL, superseding the memory of SNL's slanderous sketch last month accusing the Palin family of incest.
