Obama's Grandmother Dies

Sen. Barack Obama's ailing grandmother died of cancer, his campaign announced today. He left the campaign trail two weeks ago to visit her in Hawaii.

From The Washington Post, here's a statement from Obama and his sister Maya Soetoro-Ng:

"It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer. She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances. She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring. Our debt to her is beyond measure.

"Our family wants to thank all of those who sent flowers, cards, well-wishes, and prayers during this difficult time. It brought our grandmother and us great comfort. Our grandmother was a private woman, and we will respect her wish for a small private ceremony to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to any worthy organization in search of a cure for cancer."

Dunham took care of Obama during his teen years, and the candidate has often spoken of how his grandmother was an integral figure in his life.

"She's the one who put off buying a new car or a new dress for herself so that I could have a better life," he said in his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention. "She poured everything she had into me. And although she can no longer travel, I know that she's watching tonight, and that tonight is her night as well."

If there was any doubt as to whether Obama would win this election, this puts him over the top. I know that's crass, but it's the truth.

Wow, what is really too bad. Especially right before he will most likely be elected President. What a wonderful legacy she has left.

What a tribute and an impact she had on her grandson...I am moved beyond words to know that she was his pillar of strength, the love shows in what she did for him...and we know she will be looking down from Heaven saying that's my boy along side of her daughter/his mother if God willing he is our next President...I just feel he is real...and definately came from roots much like ours...God bless the Obama family. My prayers and heart go out to them.

god bless obama
