Planned Parenthood Offers $25 Gift Certificates for Abortions

Oh my insensitivity:

This year, for the first time, Planned Parenthood of Indiana is offering holiday gift certificates for that certain someone in your life who may want a breast exam, a pap smear or perhaps not want another life in their life.

Calling them an "unusual yet practical gift this holiday season," the organization is selling gift certificates in $25 denominations, redeemable at any of the group's 35 statewide locations for their services, including health screenings, birth control and abortion services.

A Planned Parenthood website page notes that a standard women's health exam costs $58 while abortions in the first trimester can run from $350 to $900.

There's even an online page to order the certificates if you know someone in Indiana who desires such services.

According to Ms. magazine, an official of the Hoosier Planned Parenthood group explained:

"People are making really tough decisions about putting gas in their car and food on their table, so we know that many women especially put healthcare at their bottom of their list to do."

I'm speechless. Really. This is the most mindblowing marketing maneuver I have ever heard of.

Your comments are welcomed.

Your headline is very misleading. The Indiana website you link to does not market these certificates this way...they don't even mention the word abortion in the marketing blurb. Instead they state the health screening side of things. I know that since Planned Parenthood offer abortion services these certificates could be used for this purpose but I really wish people would realize that because of the dismal level of health care coverage in this country, many women who earn too much for state health coverage but get no health benefits from their employers have no other option but to go to Planned Parenthood for the Pap exams, breast exams and contraceptive services that I and many other women take for granted. Planned Parenthood is very often the only point of service for women in poorer neighborhoods and yet women who do go there (and not to have an abortion) have to run the gauntlet of anti-abortion protesters who are often very Un-Christlike in their approach. Just one more reason that we need reform of health care in this country

The headline to this story is sensationalistic and misleading. You suggest that PP is offering $25 abortions. What they're offering are gift certificates for all of their services, which include abortions. However, the Ms foundation is lauding the fact that PP is making health care available to women.

We all know that PP offers abortions. They also offer, as you say, pap smears, breast exams, and prenatal care. With 47 million people without health care in the this country, I think buying someone gift certificates that they have to use for preventive care is actually a great thing. I certainly wouldn't get someone a PP certificate if there is something else available, but I might if I thought that was the only way to get a mother, daughter, sister or wife to spend money on herself for preventive health care.

After reading the story, I think to call it a "mindblowing marketing maneuver" is a serious overreaction.

Now isn't that heart warming. Does it qualify as a bounty?

This is wack. I can't even imagine this is possible. Knowing that Planned parenthood doesn't report suspected children from being raped in insest here in Colorado, that is horrific. Thanks for posting this. Great news to be aired.

What's next, green stamps? Every time I think I have seen or heard it all, something like this shows up. It is a horrible, horrible idea. May God forgive us.

No one should be surprised at anything Planned Parenthood will do to make a buck. And no, the headline is not misleading. It says it like it is.

AP...where on the Indiana site does it specifically mention that the certificates are for abortions...if you link to the website it clearly states health exams but nowhere does it mention the word abortion. That's why the headline is indeed misleading and sensationalistic. It's meant to rile people up and it works obviously...but seriously could you please tell me what alternatives women who have no health insurance have for preventative health care?? If it wasn't for PP uninsured women (who already are at higher risk for health problems) would have no access to health care except for the ER.....That's the real elephant in the room here...the lack of health care for all.

This planned parenthood is a very serious thing and should not be taken lightly planned parenthood uses are tax dollars to help with things not pertaining to abortion to free up there money for abortions. Margret Sanger the founder said she wanted to erase the black population from the face of the earth but said to be careful because she didn't want it leaked out. But it leaked out any way so any time you go to planned parenthood you are actually supporting abortion and the lie they are reasonable is just that they cost a fortune for any medical things. You are better off in a hospital where it is at least sterile environment. If a company does evil then you should boycott them so they do not continue.

Seriously?... come on - abortion is not part of God's plan; but neither is trash talking an organization that does offer some good services. I would venture to say that very few of those who get a certificate are seeking an abortion. Usually those getting the abortion are very secretive of their pregnancy.
Let's get serious - $25 off of an abortion is not going to put anyone over the edge!

This headline is so incredibly misleading and only fuels the sort of reductionist, ignorant ravings that are associated with the evangelical far right of the republican party. This is a disservice many on the far right will only read the title and/or read over the rest so that they can use the most extreme argument possible to arose their supporters. Evangelicals need to up the standard for solid, clear, concise and honest work, especially in the public square if they want to be taken seriously in the future.

Planned Parenthood should be shut down.(Period)

Planned Parenthood is actually a great thing. What about the teens who make mistakes and need to find out if they are pregnant or not? I'm not saying the abortions are right (I'm anti-abortion) but the free exams and tests they can do are great. And no, it's not pricey if you fill out all of the paper work, in fact, it's all free.

First of I'd like to respond to all this non-sense,Abortion has been around as long as man. To think people won't find places to get abortions is silly. I like to point out there is a double edge tsword in this country. You can't put down some one who has an abortion for the simple reason that person most likely would end up on social services if they choose to have the baby. Then the government turns around and complains that they have to support the child if the women is a single parent or married and her life has taken a turn for the worst. My hope is to educate people and make them aware of some serious issues faceing this country. I hope we have educated and well informed people in goverment that is aware of this double edge sword. I'm sure there are alot of people in country who's family member has had to made hard decisions. For anyone to think this is an easy decision for a women at any point in her live is sadly mistaken.I hope that planned parenthood maintains services to women no matter what a person back round ,women have right to make these decision on her own, Its hard enough on women these days , we need strong women to stand up to this serious issue. Ive always said if you don't have anything intelligent to say don't say anything at all.
