Warren Affirms Obama's 'Desire to be President of Every Citizen'

Updated: 1/18/09

Rick Warren complimented Barack Obama's invitations to himself and other clergy to pray at inaugural events as a sign of the president-elect's commitment to govern on behalf of all Americans.

The invitation to openly gay Episcopal Bishop V. Gene Robinson to pray at the inaugural kick off event on Sunday has again stirred great controversy.

"President-elect Obama has again demonstrated his genuine commitment to bringing all Americans of goodwill together in search of common ground," Warren said in a statement provided to Christianity Today. "I applaud his desire to be the president of every citizen."

Warren and Obama have continually been taking heat from members of the gay community since it was announced that the California megachurch pastor would give the invocation at the swearing-in ceremony next Tuesday. Robinson was one of the earliest critics, saying "it was like a slap in the face."

"I'm all for Rick Warren being at the table," Bishop Robinson told The New York Times, "but we're not talking about a discussion, we're talking about putting someone up front and center at what will be the most watched inauguration in history, and asking his blessing on the nation. And the God that he's praying to is not the God that I know."

There is speculation over whether Warren will pray in Jesus' name or not. Robinson told the Concord Monitor that he doesn't yet know what he'll say, but he knows he won't use a Bible.

"While that is a holy and sacred text to me, it is not for many Americans," Robinson said. "I will be careful not to be especially Christian in my prayer. This is a prayer for the whole nation."

Warren's statement quoted above initially appeared to focus on Obama's invitation to Gene Robinson. The statement, e-mailed by a media relations firm, bore the headline: "Statement by Dr. Rick Warren on the Invitation for Bishop V. Gene Robinson to Give the Inaugural Opening Ceremony Invocation (which Warren Gave Four Years Ago)."

Based on that headline, this post was originally titled "Warren Applauds Obama's Invitation to Gay Bishop." The Washington Post ("Rick Warren Reaches Out to Gene Robinson") also interpreted the statement as a response to the Robinson invitation. Numerous bloggers followed suit.

Sunday, January 18, a follow-up statement from Larry Ross of A. Larry Ross Communications, a firm that frequently represents Rick Warren, clarified the intent of Warren's original statement: "In his recent statement, Dr. Warren was not applauding the person invited, but rather affirming the principle of President-elect Obama's commitment to serve as a President of all citizens and hold an inclusive inaugural."

This is sickening how people are obsessed with being politically correct. As Christians we are called to be "Christ Correct". The Bishop... that topic is too much for a blog comment. As for Rick... C'mon buddy, you need to always 24/7 represent what defines you--CHRIST. Narrow is the road. Narrow is the road.

While God is real to me, he is not for many Americans," Robinson said. "I will be careful not to pray to any higher power during my prayer. This is a prayer for the whole nation."

Hey Mickey... how amazing that you have some deep knowledge of who's being "politically correct" and who's following the "narrow road." Don't you think that picking Warren was an act of political correctness?

This is Prophecy being fulfilled right before our eye's
We are not in the last days but the last hours!
Sounds like Robinson renounces Christianity
"I will be careful not to be especially Christian in my prayer. This is a prayer for the whole nation." (sic) Have we forgotten The Nation was founded on Christianity.

2 Tim 3:1-5
3:1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God- 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.

2 Tim 1:8-9
8 So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, 9 who has saved us and called us to a holy life-not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,
Fear Christ not the people

Matt 10:28
28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

This how low the Episcopal Church has sunk. The Episcopal Church is hardly Christian.

Well, Robinson got one thing right: "And the God that he’s praying to is not the God that I know.”... The God I know does not approve of the gay bishop's lifestyle.

Gene Robinson seems lost as the day is long - sad that he is a church leader.

Additionally, I wasn't aware that because Warren doesn't pray to HIS God (whoever that may be, as it's not the God of the Bible - which I suppose is a good reason why he won't be praying from it) that Warren couldn't pray to him. Last time I checked, the world and our country doesn't revolve around Robinson.

"I will be careful not to be especially Christian in my prayer"

How does a Christian pray without being "especially Christian"?

Do Robinson's views on prayer align with his views on homosexuality and homosexual marriage - he strives to avoid being 'especially Christian"?

Bishop Robinson: ". . . And the God that he’s praying to is not the God that I know"

You can say that again.

Rick Warren is going to be there. Get over it. Californians passed the gay marriage ban, as have many other states. Get over it.

It's not so much a matter of being politically correct as of being culturally sensitive. But sensitivity to the beliefs or feelings of others doesn't seem to be a priority for lots of Christians. Most people I know who've accepted Christ did so because they were exposed to sensitive Christians, not those who had to blab about their faith in every context.

Rick and Barack - they are pleased to welcome the homosexual bishop. But where is the representative of those who practice bestiality?

Strange, I find no reference by Christ in the New Testament relating to gays, lesbians, bisexuals or transgendered persons. Could it really be a non-issue that is used as a means of retaining power?

Jesus stated the rain and sun falls on all people alike. HIS LOVE DOES LIKEWISE!

Evidently the Bible and its teaching are not important to Mr. Warren. I am called to pray for those in authority, get along peacefully if possible, but to be salt and light. How are the sinners going to know that their choies and actions are sin if they are not told? Mostly in a loving manner, but the things of our Father are not to be taken lightly. If I look at Obama's fruit and action, there is no indication that he is a Christian. If you disagree, I would direct your attention to the Book of James.

Robinson is no Bishop before God. Just like the Bible speaks of false Apostles, this man is a false Bishop if there ever was one. He rightfully says he doesn't know the God of Rick Warren, because Robinson is obviously living in demonic deception. Romans 1 describes him and his situation. I am ashamed that an openly perverse man who sleeps with other men and practices oral and anal sex with a man is praying at the inauguration of our president. Rick Warren is a Christian pastor. If he does not pray in Christ name then he is just denying Christ before men. Having said this, I believe Rick Warren will pray a biblically founded prayer to Our Father in Jesus' name.

How interesting, that the mainline liberal and popular liberal are now on the same team. Both are mmore commited to America as their polity than the Church as the Body of Christ. Being followers of Jesus Christ has been redefined as "good will" in search of common ground. But I thought - given that both claim to be "pastors" who have been baptized and ordained in the name of the Triune God - the common ground they share is already defined. I guess this is not the case. Robinson says he has no plans of offering a Christian prayer. It remains to be seen how many times Rick will use "purpose" or "purpose driven" in his. Sounds like the best of American religion.

If Bishop Robinson does not pray in Jesus name nor use the bible for his text whom will he pray to or what truth will he speak to the "whole nation"? Why not just ask an atheist to rail against God. I am sure it would be more pleasing in Gods sight.
Must be the end times (II Tim.3:1-9)

I do agree with Bishop Gene Robinson that the God Rick Warren will be praying to is not the god Robinson knows.

Robinson's god is not the God of the bible. Robinson's god is a dead idol of Robinson's own perverted imagination. Obama's invitation to Robinson is not an expression of godly tolerance and acceptance, but one of compromise and ignorance.

Pastor Warren would be very wise to use his access to President elect Obama to act as a Prophet Nathan instead of a religious stooge to be used as a pawn of the next President.

While Christians may disagree on the issue of homosexuality, we are still commanded to love one another, brother or enemy. In this case, what some see as our enemy is our brother.
Let the gays and lesbians do the hating, not the Christians.

I agree with those who applaud President-elect Obama's decision to ensure a diversity of religious perspectives be represented in the historic events of the coming week. However, given that Bishop Robinson rejects the Anglican understanding of the Christian faith, I think the choice a gay leader from some other organization such as the Metropolitan Community Church would have been much more appropriate.

Not that any of you bloggers need me to be, but I'm very proud of you. In Leviticus God tells Moses that homosexuality is wrong. Period. End of story. Continue, all of you, not letting the world tell you what you know to be wrong. AND BE AS VOCAL IN EVERY DAY LIFE AS YOU WERE HERE!! The end won't be easy, but God rejoices when we witness for Him. Yes, we should love them, but teach them what God's Word says in the Bible, and not condone that behavior. Call them to repentance of sin in Jesus Christ. God Bless You.

An openly gay Christian bishop at the opening ceremony of the Presidential Inauguration is an abomination. This is reminiscent of the Seleucid king, Antiochus IV Epiphanes, the Seleucid king who proscribed the practice of Judaism and in BC 168 set up a Greek alter to Zeus in the Temple in Jerusalem and swine were sacrificed on it.

Jews initially passive, became outraged with revolutionary violence leading under Judas Maccabeus, in BC 165, resulting in a peace treaty.

One would hope that Christians will become so incensed with the desecration that they too will rise in opposition.

It's rather simple...WE ARE ALL GOD'S CHILDREN AND HE LOVES ALL OF US DEARLY...just not our SINS...that's our example to follow. Amen

It seems to me that what is going to take place Washington next week would might just as well be held in Sodom and Gomorrah

This country has become a terrible liberal nation. We have taken God out of everything. This nation will fall if it continues down this road. It has become totally anti- Christian and especially anti-Catholic. May God have Mercy on us and Mary our Queen and our Mother pray for us in union with all the Angels and Saints of Heaven. Homosexuality is a grave moral sin and has no place in the constitution. No one hhaas the "right" to be married to marry someone of the same sex. ALso no one has the right to kill inocent babies in the whomb.

i find it incredible that a Bishop can say "I will not be particularly Christian" in my prayer!!

As Christians we need to Boldly Proclaim who and what we are, just as Paul instructed.

As Americans we have an obligation to accept that others beliefs are not our own but they have a right to them as well.

I can respect a Rabbi or an Imam praying according to thier own traditions and beliefs, just as I expect them to respect mine.

But I CANNOT respect a nominal Christian Leader watering down his beliefs in a misguided attempt at political correctness!

Warren has destroyed his own credibility. Obama's confused and warped conscience should not be applauded but gently corrected. A gay bishop -- commit sacrileges daily and give grave scandal. You cannot re-invent history, or the gospel, and be truthful, no matter "how nice a guy" you pretend to be.

On Inauguration Day Mr. Obama will swear on a Bible which states:

"For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened....Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised.

Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them."

Romans 1:21-32

Harold Orndorff‘s point that Jesus never referenced homosexuality is interesting; but to assume Jesus’ silence implies it is a “non-issue” deserves further examination. In fact, I contend that Jesus’ silence on the issue of homosexuality may in fact be condemning. Why? Well, in Jesus’ time homosexuality was condemned by Jewish society, even to the point of death; it was seen as a form of idolatry and a rebellion against God’s natural order. And since Jesus was never shy to point out hypocrisy, especially among the religious leaders, we can very well conclude that Jesus approved the way the Jews were handling the issue of homosexuality at that time – i.e. by condemning it.

what church would you have belonged to in the middle ages. how about the year 100. jesus said his church would last forever. if you have not the holy roman catholic faith , you are not a christain. true christains are the only christains. not coming from a man made so called sect that calls itself a church. the roman catholic faith is so necessary for salvation that those who are not a part of it,go into the everlasting fire which was prepared for the demons. the roman catholic was the first, the only true church which will last till the end of the world. all others are heretics who will be condemned at their death to hell.

Am I to believe Mrs Robinson that a muslim cleric won't say the word Allah in his prayer? Coward

Could we entertain the thought that Warren carefully gave Robinson an opening and he fell into it? Who looks like the anti-Christian bigot now?

I hear no hatred in these comments. It is intolerance for thebehaviour of someone who wants Jesus and His rules to bend to his lifestyle and preferences, sin or not (Robinson). What I hear is intolerance for sin...YAY!!!

Speaking the truth is not hatred. It is love.

I'm sure all posting comments will live their faith by praying for Robinson, and Obama. (and Warren)

This is insane and a disgrace to God. The bible is clear on homosexuallity, it is a lifestyle of sin, and while we should not condemn one sin any more than another, this is a blatant disregard for the Word of God. "The god of our many understandings?" there is only one God. This country was blessed for our Christian heritage, not muslum or buddist, or baal worship(which seems to be this god of many understandings, you know, the "god of this world") this invites swifter judgement. The reverand has to think on whether or not to pray in the name of Jesus Christ? whose name is he going to pray to? according to my bible, its the only name given among men that we might be saved. It is appauling to see how little knowledge todays so called christian has.

This is so sad that our country is fixated on who will be saying the prayer at this event. God is not invited. Most people who will be attending and will be watching the event have no knowledge of the true God or his will and frankly could care less. It is all a charade. This man is an abomanation already and unless Jesus christ gives him an amazing conversion the next 4 years will truely become hell for any God loving Americans. Let us pray for this new leader that he really sees the light and decides to honor and respect life from natural conception until natural death. Let the only murder be done to the political correctness that has overtaken our nation.

Wether homosexual or not is not the issue as some of us may be inclined. This is about a representative of Christ a Bishop, How can he call himself that when he cannot even pray to the God he professes and live the life he is called to imitate... Such a person cannot be representing christians but just a homosexual sympathizer.... its a good political move thats all

One answer. Tradition. Get it, or perish.

Robinson is only a "bishop" in his own mind. He's about as much a bishop as I am president of the United States. He has basically started his own church, one which has no historical or doctrinal connection to the Church that Jesus founded.

If he will not be praying to God than, he will be praying to the devil. Simple is that. There is no middle ground.

Don't you see that the primary issue here is not where you stand on gays and lesbians? That's just the wrapping on the package, which, at its heart, is about the nation state controlling and subordinating religion, Christianity in particular, for its agenda. Both Warren and Robinson are complicit in this agenda, which polices God out of public life, relegated to the margins and kept safely in a "spiritual" compartment. Warren practices this kind of privatized faith as much as Robinson, it just takes different forms. However, either way, conservative or liberal, they both are operating in a Christendom/ Constantinian model of church and state. Evangelicals are obviously too blind to see this.

It is not possible for a man to debase himelf more than by having another man ejaculate in his mouth or down his throat or up his rectum. A man cannot debase himself more than by being the performer of the foregoing. This is the homosexual "lifestyle" which is NEVER described. Even bestiality is not as debasing because only one party has free will and only one party was made by God in His image and likeness, compared to the acts of two men which is such an abomination to Almighty God.

The Lord Jesus mentions that His Kingdom is not of this world. (Jn 18:36) That we are in the world but not part of it.(Jn17:16)
That we should give to Ceasar what is Ceasar's and to God what is God's (Mk 12:17)
A pluralistic, philosophically, diverse, culture is
not the table that's set for the faithful.
Our mission is to "Make disciples of all nations and preach the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. (Matt 28:19)
Salvaiton is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. (Acts 4:12)
Let's fill up heaven in our generation for Christ !!
That's all that matters !!! Go! Go! GO! Saints of God !!! Let's bring a Living Jesus to a Dying World. Amen

The Inauguration, being a national event and one of international interest, I suppose one might expect various groups to be represented. However, as I understand it, America claims and has always claimed to be a christian country and states its President as being the 'most powerful leader in the world'. Therefore, let the emphasis be on christianity and take note of what true belief in God (the God of the Bible) can do for the country and for the individual as they put their hope and trust in Him.
Billy Graham believed and still believes in a Gospel that is 'black and white' - no compromises - no grey areas. My prayer is that Rick Warren will strive to that end also.
I'm confident that Rick Warren will pray the prayer that is correct for the occasion and that it will be one from his heart and being led by the Holy Spirit, from the heart of God himself.
God bless Barack Obama and God bless America on this special historical occasion.
Our prayers from many in Australia are with you.

Adam Miller, some sins DO need our condemnation more than others, if for no other reason than that certain sins lead quickly to the dissolution of human society. Our sexuality is the deepest element of our humanity--so deep that even in heaven, we shall still be male and female individuals, respectively. THAT'S DEEP! Therefore, perversions of God's plan for human beings in the area of sexuality are particularly vicious. God has privileged us to be co-creators with Him of new human beings, new souls who will live for all eternity. The way that that happens is our sexuality--thus, it is especially sacred; hence, attacks on it are especially profane.

Halo, non-Catholics may also be saved. Please consult the Catechism of the Catholic Church for the Church's teaching on this subject.

I am appalled by the male chauvinistic language in this discussion. To use the word, brother, in the so-called "generic" is a slap-in-the-mouth to women. Start treating women as images of God.

It's interesting that Robinson was one of the first to go with the 'slap in the face' phrase over Warren's selection. I have to wonder how his wife felt when he left her with two young daughters after experimenting with same sex behaviors during their marriage. Wouldn't that be something of a 'slap in the face' ?

I am not religious. Most people mistake my 'homophobia' for religious dogma. Not in my case. My husband was in a man boy 'love' relationship as a youth. I have seen the consequences of that and have been made aware that the 'depraved mind' of Romans 1 is a reality.

It is important for people like me to speak up. There is no 'gay' answer to what we know and have personally experienced.

Rick Warren is the false prophet. Obama is the false messiah.
Do not be deceived. John 14:15 "If you love me, keep my commandments".

Has anyone noticed that freedom of speech seems to be only for liberals? Robinson considers Warren being asked to pray "a slap in the face," as I am sure he would if it were any other conservative or evangelical religious leader, not just Warren; but he does not see that to ask him to pray at another part of the ceremonies is an insult to many of us. Robinson is considered offensive by even the Episcopalians I know.
Let us not just complain though, let us pray daily for our country, including it's leaders, local and national, for both their decisions and their relationships with God; and let us be sure WE pray in Jesus name. "If my people..." not just if my people's leaders.

This is what happens when the Truth is compromised over and over year after year. When no one speaks out and everything is tolerated. Intorlerance doesn't have to lead to the gas chamber, which is where everyone who doesn't want hear any criticism of what they are doing accuses the critic of taking them.

Homosexuality is anit-social behavior. Encouraging it is like encouraging drunk driving. Both may be a good time, but ultimately is dangerous to the individual and society. We have Mothers Against Drunk Driving, maybe we need Mothers Against Sodomite Sex!

Apostasy Apostasy, Laodecia niether hot nor cold,
2nd Thess.Ch 2...before Christ returns the falling away from the faith and the revealing of the Anti-christ will come before Jesus returns and this is a prelude,do not be decieved God is not mocked, and Jesus said "He that is ashamed of me to confess me before men I will be assamed of him.

In keeping with Rick Warren's dialectic approach to a "Purpose Driven" life, he has chosen here to avoid the dogma of Truth in favor of the good of the group. Which group? Perhaps the CFR of which he is a member or simply the ecumenical/emerging masses that subscribe to his "Purpose Driven" "Message" ... by his fruit he is known.

As a Christian living in a non Christian country, I envy people of US who used to designate their homeland as a Christian nation. However, when I read a 'Christian pastor' is not going to pray in Jesus' name and neither to quote from the Bible in the US presidential inauguration, I wonder whether Christianity is really practiced faithfully in US. I pray that God will save US.

"I will be careful not to be especially Christian in my prayer."

In prayer as in life.

I believe that when, one day, Bishop Robinson wakes up in Hell, there will be a couple of gay ACLU lawyers standing near, who will have hundreds of pounds of paper citing the unconstitutionality of anything the Bible says. Sort of like a couple of comments I've seen here indicating that since Jesus didn't deal directly with the sin of homosexuality (at least it's not recorded) that it must be ok. Someone please read Romans 1:18-32 with emphasis on verses 26 and 27 and tell me that homosexuality is not a SIN and that the triune God does not hate it.

I believe the Bible to be the inerrant word of God. I believe that we live in a secular community not a Christian community.

The scriptures center on those of faith.

Christians seem to think that the Bible centers on non-christian beliefs. It is to sole duty of every transformed believer to present the good news with humility and love.

To judge others is condemned in the Word of God!

Love is the greatest commandment our Lord and Savior gave us. Let's practice what Jesus commanded.

Fire that "...gay bishop.." . He is an abomination and a disgrace to the christian Community.Hand him over to satan.

The bible says in Leviticus 18 verse 22 says :

"... Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination....".

The Bible is right. Unnatural perverse sexual acts is an abomination. It is filth. "...you can put lipstick on a pig it's still a pig....". Filth is filth. You can call it refuse , or manure, it is still filth.

Romans Chapter 1 verses 15 to 32 says :

"....15 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

19Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.....".

We certainly are a nation in need of prayer, aren't we?

May God bless our nation; our president; our leaders: elected, executive and judicial government leaders; those in non-profits; and those in the private sector.

To change what's wrong in politics, we need God. No question about it.
