Pope Gives Pelosi a Stern Reprimand

Pope Benedict XVI lectured House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on the "dignity of human life" at a private meeting today, a decidedly less cordial reception than is frequently given many
U.S. leaders.

Pelosi, D-Calif., describes herself as an ardent Catholic but raised eyebrows last year by saying "doctors of the church" disagreed on when life begins and that abortion "continues to be an issue of controversy" in the Catholic Church.

The comments earned her a public scolding from a number of U.S. bishops, who said the church has believed abortion is wrong since the first century.

The wording of a Vatican statement suggests she received another reprimand from the pope over her support for abortion on Wednesday.

"His Holiness took the opportunity to speak of the requirements of the natural moral law," the statement read, "and the Church's consistent teaching on the dignity of human life from conception to natural death which enjoin all Catholics, and especially legislators, jurists and those responsible for the common good of society, to work in cooperation with all men and women of good will in creating a just system of laws capable of protecting human life at all stages of its development."

Conservatives were already nervous that a papal photo-op would enable Pelosi, and other Catholic politicians who support abortion rights, to say that Catholics can reject church teaching on abortion and remain in good standing.

Instead, the Holy See used the encounter to make its disapproval clear, releasing an official statement on what was discussed – a relatively rare step, especially when the visitor is not a head of state.

Judie Brown, president of the American Life League, had earlier said the only photo she wanted to see was one of Pelosi "in the confessional line."

But after the pope's stern rebuke, Brown said she hopes U.S. bishops will be more willing to deny Communion to abortion-rights politicians like Pelosi. "We encourage our bishops and priests to emulate the same courage exhibited in Rome," she said.

In her own statement Wednesday, Pelosi made no mention of the papal lecture.

"It is with great joy that my husband, Paul, and I met with his Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI today," she said. "In our conversation, I had the opportunity to praise the church's leadership in fighting poverty, hunger, and global warming, as well as the Holy Father's dedication to religious freedom and his upcoming trip and message to Israel."

The papal reception for Pelosi was notable for its contrasts with the warm welcomes given to former President George W. Bush, who shared the Vatican's "culture of life" ideology even as he rejected church overtures not to invade Iraq.

Yet it would have been hard for Benedict to snub Pelosi altogether without straining diplomatic relations with the United States, since her position puts her second in line to the presidency after Vice President Joe Biden, also a Catholic who supports abortion rights.

Pelosi, whose grandparents were Italian immigrants, is on a week-long tour of Italy with fellow lawmakers. Included in her delegation is Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., who has led an effort among Catholic Democrats in the House to create room to disagree with the church on abortion.

DeLauro recently spearheaded a letter to the pope from nearly 50 House members, asking for "clarification" on why the pope lifted the excommunication on a schismatic bishop who not believe 6 million Jews were killed in the Holocaust.

Comments

A comment on Pelosi praising the Catholic Church's work on poverty, hunger, and global warming: the reason that these actions have any value is that they reflect the intrinsic worth of God's creative work, especially in regards to His Image Bearers. Pelosi's disregard for human life at it's most vulnerable stage, inside the womb, makes her other efforts on the afore mentioned items ring hollow. Unless we are willing to protect the dignity of life at all its stages, we are not doing the full work that God desires.

If the Pope really gave House Speaker Nancy Pelosi a "stern reprimand" then he behaved in a most undiplomatic and unsuitable manner for a Head of State. President Barack Obama should retaliate by recalling his ambassador for consultation.

Pelosi aborsionist is far from the second position next to Pres. Obama. Hillary Clinton has the second position in USA, as the Secretary of State.

Pelosy, the voice of house of Representatives, calls herself a "fervent Catholic" but is heading to fry in hell with her promotion of abortion to improve the economy.

Joe Biden, also a seudo Catholic, who supports abortion rights, follows Pelosi to party in hell.

God bless the Pope for chsting Pelosi.

Does Pelosi think that because of her Italian heritage she's part owner of the Pope and can treat him like a guard at Buckingham Palace? I guess he's just a good man with no real authority.

Pelosi and much of the rest of the D.C. set are politicians first and people of faith second (at best). Their main concern is self-glorification. Abortion is a pragmatic solution to the problem of unwanted children and the inconvenience and cost their existence adds. Pelosi and her kind are pretending to shepherd the people, allowing them to lead the way toward their own spiritual destruction.

Interestingly, a CNN story this afternoon on Pelosi's trip said nothing about the Pope's rebuke, but did highlight the criticism the trip had received as an expensive and unnecessay junket during a time of financial crisis.

Room to disagree with the Catholic Church on abortion. Ya right. Unfortunately people will take it as a freedom of speech issue and not murder but when you belong to an organization and you disagree with a major, major tenet, than I suggest you resign from that organization and stop claiming you are a member of it because none of these pro killing the unborn are Christians, they're more Nazi like because many of the Nazi experiments done on prisoners was how to abort/kill the unwanted certain peoples. Isn't that what abortion is, getting rid of what the carrier doesn't want and the hell with what the victim wants. Sounds like murder to me whether Catholic or Protestant or whatever belief you claim to be a follower of. Murder isn't freedom of speech or "one sided choice", its murder. That's what Pelosi doesn't get but the Catholic Church does get.

I can't believe Abortion is still an issue. Back in the 70s, we didn't have the abundance of scientific information on genetics that we do now. From conception, the cell that evolves into a human is not only strictly human (it'll never become a dog, cat, monkey, or banana), but it's a completely unique human (even "identical" twins are different; see Live Science article by Choi, 21 February 2008).

Furthermore, since we know from the scientific Law of Biogenesis that life can only come from another living organism, this unique new human is alive from the point of conception (& please don't argue that a fetus depends on its mother until you do a scientific study on how many 1-year old babies could survive if they were abandoned on an island).

Abortion is no longer a religious issue. As demonstrated by this article on Pelosi & the Pope, it's strictly political. If we don't hold pregnant women responsible for bringing their babies to term, we should not hold hit-&-run-drivers responsible for running over pedestrians. When are our politicians going to have the courage to change our legislation to become consistent?

It would be nice if liberals like Pelosi, Biden, & Obama would give the same attention to each abortion that liberals frequently do to death-row inmates. I say, if you want to keep abortion legal, then "abort" 2 convicted murderers for each innocent unborn baby; but of course, many will consider me to be politically incorrect (further proving my point).

IF Mrs. Pelosi and her husband wanted to make a trip to the Vatican to see the POPE she should have done on her own time and money. No where do I see how the trip was paid for. Men take a beating when they take their wifes on a business trip. If she went as a world leader I question the division of religion and government. Abortion is not the issue. Seeing the Italian Homeland is her dream let it be. Where does America take its place in her life?

As a former Catholic, turned Evangelical when I married my husband, and now looking at returning to my Catholic roots, it infuriates me that liberal Catholics such as Pelosi and Biden can receive the Eucharist when I, a strong pro-lifer and follower of Christ, cannot receive the Eucharist until or if my husband and I marry in the Church. I say "Kudos" to the Pope for taking such a strong stance on this issue.

Pro-life, like the rebuke of Pelosi, is a spiritual/ religious matter. We who are faithful should give a rats tail about whether the Vatican doesn't want to offend the USA in order to retain diplomatic ties. Likewise, the Pope NEEDS to explain and repent for the decision he made to reinstate the two Nazi supporting, anti-Simetic bishops. Debate the cost of the trip and other such political concerns in some other venue -- like the New York Times or Washington Post.

I AM NOT A CATHOLIC, BUT I LOVE THE PEOPLE WHO I WORK WITH IN RIGHT TO LIFE. THEY ARE NOT BRAINWASHED BY, NOR FEARFUL OF THE POPE. THEY KNOW WHAT I KNOW, FROM THE ONE WHO IS THE TRUTH. SINFUL MEN AND WOMEN CHOOSE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE MERCY AND GRACE OF OUR LORD IN THIS TIME. GOD DELAYS HIS JUDGMENT. JESUS, WHILE ON THE CROSS, ASKS THE FATHER TO FORGIVE THOSE WHO "KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO". I BELIEVE IT IS AN ISSUE GOD GAVE ME WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE, BEFORE THE LEGALIZATION OF ABORTION. NO ONE TAUGHT ME THIS EXCEPT THE HOLY SPIRIT WITHIN ME. SO, LESSONS LEARNED IN THIS CULTURAL BATTLE ARE SPIRITUAL LESSONS. IN LEARNING TO LOVE THOSE WHO I PASSIONATELY DIFFER WITH AND KNOWING THAT OUR GOD ALLOWS ABORTION FOR NOW, HE HAS HIS ULTIMATE PURPOSE. I HAVE LEARNED A LOT ABOUT GOD, AND HAVE LEARNED TO BE STRONG IN THE TRUTH NO MATTER WHAT EVIL I KNOW IS OCCURRING. WE ARE TO HATE EVIL AND TO OVERCOME EVIL WITH GOOD. THAT IS WHAT I WILL DO UNTIL MY BREATH IS GONE. I WILL CONTINUE TO TRUST GOD AND OBEY HIS WILL, NOT MINE. WALK WITH CHRIST EVERYDAY, AND KNOW THE JOY OF HIS SALVATION AND DO NOT LET THE EVIL THINGS TAKE THAT JOY. PRAY FOR THE LIGHT OF CHRIST TO COME IN THE HEARTS OF THOSE WHO ARE SPIRITUALLY BLIND IN THIS AREA, ESPECIALLY OUR PRESIDENT, AND THOSE IN HIGH GOVERNMENT OFFICES THROUGHOUT THIS LAND.

I want the Pope to stay in Italy personaly and with his advice. I think that why Catholics were not voted into office many years ago. I don't want to keep Catholics out only the Pope.

Politicians are pragmatists by choice and it isn't such a leap of logic to see how compromise, fencesitting, symbolic handwringing and washing turn them into pro-choicers by the very nature of their dependence on their 'vocation',

I'm writing from personal experience plus conviction dearly bought from the same experience and its influence on former 'easy thinking'
and now that I act as I am committed to think I know any ethos and beliefs flowing from it - church in this case - requires wholehearted dedication freely given to it [however hard that can be] by whoever claims it as part of their identity. I am a reconnected RC after 40 years disconnected and still find it damned hard in communion to accept some 'stuff' and some inhouse approaches to life on earth as we know it - BUT sin though I do, I know ethical wrong from right and will stand up and be counted for my 'communal belief' - not try to have it both ways - as the serpent tempted Eve in Eden. Public leadership demands even more stringency in this regard it appears to me. Pelosi should know power corrupts precisely because it IS power - not modesty, humility, Christlikeness - and to those Christians who 'would be as gods' I can only say one can't if one's a Christian take liberties - be choosey - with the Cross. It IS a cross and a pragmatic choice for mere human reasons is another hammer blow to Life's Own Hands. There are no two ways about it I'm afraid - just Life's and Anti-Life's. Can the Speaker become as good a Listener?

Speaker Pelosi is not a Christian. She was born into a Roman Catholic family, but has never accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior, and has certainly never repented of her sins, which are piled high. She is a Christian in name only. Remember when Jesus separates the sheep from the goats? He puts the goats on the left. I think we can say Pelosi is on the left. The sheep go to Heaven and the goats go to .... Pelosi is a secular humanist. Her church attendance will not save her.

Pelosi is a communist her concern is of HER SELF and for the complete care of Illegals. She is a Cancer... She knows nothing about Business.

Adding a tax to your retirement is simply another way of saying to the American people, you're so darn stupid that we're going to keep doing this until we drain every cent from you. That's what the Speaker of the House is saying. Read below...............

Nancy Pelosi wants a Windfall Tax on Retirement Income. In other words tax what you have made by investing toward your retirement. This woman is a nut case! You aren't going to believe this.

Madam speaker Nancy Pelosi wants to put a Windfall Tax on all stock market profits (including Retirement fund, 401K and Mutual Funds! Alas, it is true - all to help the 12 Million Illegal Immigrants and other unemployed Minorities!

This woman is frightening.
She quotes...' We need to work toward the goal of equalizing income, (didn't Marx say something like this?), in our country and at the same time limiting the amount the rich can invest.' (I am not rich, are you?)

When asked how these new tax dollars would be spent, she replied:
'We need to raise the standard of living of our poor, unemployed and minorities. For example, we have an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in our country who need our help along with millions of unemployed minorities. Stock market windfall profits taxes could go a long way to guarantee these people the standard of living they would like to have as 'Americans'.'

(Read that quote again and again and let it sink in.) 'Lower your retirement, give it to others who have not worked as you have for it'.

Send it on to your friends. I just did!! This lady is out of her mind and she is the speaker of the house!

This Country truly is an OBAMA-nation.

I don't want to use my name because they may come after me like the SS did to the Jews.

Im OUT Buy GUNS NOW before its to late.
