Gingrich to Convert to Catholicism

Buried in an large New York Times Magazine profile of Newt Gingrich is a little nugget of information: A Baptist since graduate school, Gingrich said he will soon convert to Catholicism, his wife's faith.

Gingrich.jpg

At a moment when the role of religious fundamentalism in the party is a central question for reformers, Gingrich, rather than making any kind of case for a new enlightenment, has in fact gone to great lengths to placate Christian conservatives. The family-values crowd has never completely embraced Newt, probably because he has been married three times, most recently to a former Hill staff member, Callista Bisek. In 2006, though, Gingrich wrote a book called "Rediscovering God in America" - part of a new canon of work he has done reaffirming the role of religion in public life. The following year, he went on radio with the evangelical minister James Dobson to apologize for having been unfaithful to his second wife.

The Rev. G. Avery Lee, a longtime pastor of St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans who died earlier this year, wrote to The Times-Picayune about Gingrich's faith.

"He was not a member of any church," Pastor Lee wrote in a 1994 letter to The Times-Picayune. "He said that in his study of political theory he noted how much influence the church had had on political theory and asked if I could explain."

After their initial conversation, "We talked often. Newt began coming to church. To make it short, I baptized him (by immersion) into the membership of the St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church.

"He found there a liberal approach to both theology and sociology. . . . Whether our teachings had any effect or not, he was at least exposed to the basic Baptist principle of freedom: personal freedom before God, an open mind before an open Bible, the separation of church and state, and compassion toward other people as sinners saved by the grace of God.

"He also may have learned that we Baptists fuss and fight a lot with each other. It has been suggested by some that in baptizing him, I didn't hold him under long enough."

Update: A Focus on the Family employee emailed me to note that Dobson is not a minister as Matt Bai describes him for The New York Times. Dobson founded a ministry called Focus on the Family.

Congratulations Newt! Welcome to the Universal Church! This is great news.

CONGRATULATIONS AND WELCOME "HOME"!

Newt I met you when our precious Pope was at the National's Yield! I saw a glow that I now know as a seed being feed! I am a convert too, 40 years ago, and I can say that there is no fuller faith walk then the one that you will walk within the Catholic Church! I will pray for you as you feel the fullness of receiving our Lord at Easter! Blessings, Jan

Welcome, Newt. I, too, was an adult conversion to the fullness of the faith in becoming Catholic. A long search for truth led me home and I have found peace in myself by the grace of our Lord and His church. God bless you and your wife.

Welcome home Mr.Gingrich! My prayer is that many politicians will open their minds and hearts to the fullness of truth given to the Catholic Church established by Jesus Christ.

Congratulations from a Georgia Catholic family!! We will hold you in our prayers and hearts during this time of preparation. May God continue to bless you!

I admire you greatly and with the upcoming turmoil in politics, we need strong men like you defending God's people. Welcome home!

Welcome Home Newt. God Bless you

God Bless You Mr.Gingrich,welcome home!

Well, I just love it when people see the light!
Welcome home ... you'll be glad you're here.
The Catholic Church . . . there's no place like home!

Congradulations Newt! Welcome to the faith of the Christain Church fathers. Not suprised that a person of history would make such a choice.

A hearty warm welcome Mr.Gingrich to our spiritually rich, enduring faith. The loving arms of Catholicism embraces you and all you love wholeheartedly. I've watched you on FOX (Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity) these past years and admired your intelligence and compassionate stance regarding religion. It takes a strong man to make a big step and admit his past was just a bit imperfect at times...but to make a leap into our Catholic faith, and live it daily, is one step closer to Heaven. God bless your past Baptist faith; apparently it gave you wonderful guidance. I simply say "Deo Gratias" Newt; I will offer next Sunday's Mass for you and all you love.

Dear Newt,
Congratulations and a most warm welcome into our beautiful Catholic faith. I am a convert also. May God Bless you and Our Lady give you a BIG hug. I watch you on FOX news and you are awesome. Again, Welcome home!!! God has great plans for you..

Welcome Newt! Be sure to read G. K. Chesterson. Sometimes 3 strikes you are out OR 3rd times a CHARM! God works in His own time. God Bless and may the Holy Spirit guide you! JMJ

The Lord is calling his flock home, I am witnessing this just about everyday, especially with our Protestant friends. Praise Jesus!

I KNEW there was a reason I liked this man so much.
Welcome HOME, Mr. Gingrich!

God bless.

Welcome Home, Newt! God bless you.

Welcome home to the Holy, Catholic (universal) and Apostolic Church!! Your conversion to the Church founded by our dear Lord fills my heart with joy.

May you grow in love for the Lord and may your relationship with our precious Saviour grow stronger. Remember that when you attend Holy Mass the Lord is present in body and spirit and that if the blinders were removed from your eyes, you would see that you are in Heaven before the throne of God the Father. Make it your mission to attend Holy Mass daily, in the morning. It will change your life and will increase your love for our Lord and will strengthen your relationship with He who gave His life so you could be with Him in paradise.

May the Peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you,

Laura
Florida

Congratulations.... and welcome home!

Welcome to the Catholic Church Newt. What a gift -- both to you and the Church. Like Laura Ingraham, you are in a position to do much good. I'll be praying for you.

Mary Ellen

Our Lord has GREAT PLANS for you~~~

Welcome home......I hope you are one of many that are to follow! God bless you and your family.

Mr. Gingrich has finally answered to the voice in the interior of his heart, and has finally come home to the Truth, to Jesus and His Church!
May all his questions now be answered, and may he live a life pleasing to God, growing in holiness with his loved ones.
Welcome home Newt !!
Let's thank our Mother Mary for her tireless intercession to bring all her children back to Christ.

Alleluia and hooray! We have just gained another member of stature from the outside world and hope you use some of your talents to build up the Body of Christ. Looking forward to hearing from and more about you in the days to come, and this from a person who once couldn't stand you! God bless you and yours, Beppy

Welcome home, Newt! May God bless you abundantly for wanting the fullness of TRUTH! I pray Jesus will protect you from the evil forces that will be coming your way!

Peace in Christ,

God Bless you Newt! I will keep you in my prayers, now more than ever I hope you will run for POTUS in 2012.

Welcome Home, Speaker.

WELCOME HOME! Newt

Welcome home, brother!

Good for you, Mr. Gingrich. I hope your journey into the Church is the beginning of a love affair with the Sacraments and with Jesus Christ Himself.

I COULD NOT HAVE SAID IT ANY BETTER THAN THIS:

Congratulations Newt! Welcome to the Universal Church! This is great news.

To quote another famous convert: "To be deep in history is to cease being Protestant."

You certainly are an historian, Newt!

Congratulations Newt:
Welcome to Catholicism. Once you make your conversation, it would be cool to see you as a guest on EWTN Marcus Grodi show The Journey Home.

You are a good man, YOu will make a great Catholic

I watch you, Mr. Gingrich, on Fox News often. God is filling you up with His awesome graces! I have been a Catholic all my life, but got ever-so-closer to Him in these past 12 years- like never before. God is a Precious God. Louise

FYI

Welcome home to the Catholic Church, Mr. Gingrich. I was born Catholic 61 years ago and have been extremely grateful the the Lord gave the grace to be raised Catholics. My values and principles are rooted deep in the Catholic Faith. This is what gives peace as age and face difficulties such as my husband having lung cancer.
Peace in Christ,
Kathie Mattox

While we are always happy when folks join the Church, did he get an annulment from his first marriage?

What's so great?

His first wife is deceased. I believe his second marriage was a civil ceremony, or else he has gotten one of today's phony annulments.

I would bet he is only trying to please his current wife. So be it.

Are his previous wives dead? If not how would he handle the issue of being married for the 3rd time?

Praised be Jesus Christ! Another great intellect sees the truth!

Newt, you're almost there......Tridentine!

Can anyone explain if Gingrich can become Catholic while on his 3rd marriage. Is he getting annulments on his first two. Hope he can ligitimately become Catholic. He is becoming a great voice for our country.

"It has been suggested by some that in baptizing him, I didn't hold him under long enough."

That's pretty darn funny!! I think Newt will make a good Catholic! Welcome aboard!

Congratulations!! Is this true? Welcome to the Catholic Church.

In the one Gingrich book that I've read, and a poor effort I remember it being, he seem to have had a strikingly Gnostic understanding of religion.

What was the title? It must have been "To Renew America," as I see on the computer that I have that one. It came out in the mid-Nineties.

Perhaps he had been influenced by Herold Bloom's "The American Religion?"

It's one thing to write for the general public, but I remember feeling that Gingrich was either pandering shamelessly to people who don't much care about intellectual integrity, or that he didn't have much going on to begin with, despite his PhD from Tulane.

But then again, America wasn't his subject area, so perhaps I'm being too harsh.

Good to have you, Newt. Welcome to the Church started by Christ Himself. You might have to go back to your first wife, that is if it was a valid marriage.

God bless you, Newt! Our Lady is smiling down at you.

Calista Grinrich may have been raised a Catholic, and she might even embrace much of the Chruch's teaching, but given her current situation she cannot be said to be a practicing Catholic. No, I am not judgin anybody, but I think people should understand Church teaching on this situation. They need to reguarlize their marriage (Get married in the chruch) before he can become a Catholic. That would involve an annulment. Again, I am not judging anybody.

Welcome home Newt!

Congratulatons, Newt and welcome to the Catholic Church - I will be praying for you!

First Tony Blair, now Newt -Wow! Never under estimate the Holy Spirit! There is hope, as in REAL HOPE, for O'Bama yet! PRAY!

The gathering of the people back to Mother Church is picking up steam. I know I won't live to see the day when Protestantism is extinct as Marcionism or Montanism or Albigenisanism, but it will happen. God will manifest Himself and prove that the gates of Hell may seem ascendant for a time, but they will never prevail against His Church. He promised to be with us always, contrary to what Protestants say.

Welcome home, Newt. One flock, one shepherd.

Newt ought to download Humanae Vitae off the Web. It addresses the holocaust of abortions, AIDS, STDs and puts perspective on divorces, homosexual activity. Also promote E.Stanton Evans' book vindicating the vigilance of Joe McCarthy, "Blacklisted by History."
If Catholics had followed Humanae Vitae, I think Reagan would have become Catholic --he wrote ABORTION AND THE CONSCIENCE OF THE NATION - but the media chose to NEVER mention it --even today. "What is truth?" Pontius Pilate asked. The mob consensus wins, and the press fails -especially about Muslim teachings about Jesus "never crucified."

It may be difficult to discern the true motives for Mr. Gingrich's conversion to the catholic faith but with so many recent conversions by protestant clergy and academics it is easy to see why so many are being surprised and shocked to discover that the Catholic Church is the fullest expression of christianity.
As a serious student of catholic apologetics, I'd like to offer a few suggestions on getting started. First, stop listening to or reading professional anti-catholics including ex-priests and nuns. They are unwilling and unable to give a truthful representation of catholicism. You must go to the Catholic Church itself to understand the scriptural and historical reasons for becoming catholic. A catholic must show you the scriptures you are ignoring and mis-interpreting and you must start reading the writings of the early church fathers.
Light readers may start with EWTN's (catholic television)"The Journey Home" (Monday, 8pm), or the top-rated "Catholic Answers Live" radio show (especially Tue. and Thurs. 3-5 pm PST) or the best-selling, 3-vol.conversion book series,"Surprised by Truth" (Patrickmadrid.com).
Serious students should consider one or more of the following: 1."Catholicism and Fundamentalism" by Karl Keating, 2."Faith of The Early Fathers, vol.1" by William Jurgens, 3."The Catechism of the Catholic Church", 4.Catholic Answers (catholic.com) and The Coming Home Network International (chnetwork.org).
May God bless you on your journey...

May you be blessed with peace of heart and increase in holiness with the One Holy and Apostolic Church.

W E L C O M E !

So happy for you. Welcome home to the Catholic Church.

Let's see, is this Newt's third or fourth wife? The Catholic Church had better do a full investigation into his past marriages before they allow him to be married in the Church. From the things I've read, he's the GOP's version of Bill Clinton.

Newt has no real philosophical/religious moorings whatsoever. He will be a Catholic in name only if they let him in.

By the way, I am a Roman Catholic and a Republican.

Faith and reason have always been integral to one another. It appears Newt came to the truth of faith through reason, they way many of us have. Our minds and hearts unite. We grieve Jesus by our pride of separation from one another as Christians. Newt came home. I that pray others follow his example.

Welcome Home!

This is wonderful news! I have always viewed Newt Gingrich as a very intelectual man. He must certainly know, he has made the right choice. I am sure his wife had a hand in helping him make the decision to join the Catholic Church. Congratulations, Mr. Gingrich! Sincerely and God Bless you, Magdalen Mauldin

Welcome to the true faith my friend.

Know Jesus, Pray, Don't worry.

This is wonderful news! I have always viewed Newt Gingrich as a very intelectual man. Congratulations, Mr. Gingrich! Sincerely and God Bless you, Magdalen Mauldin

Congratulations Mr. Gingrich, Welcome aboard. The waters may be choppy but you are in good company. A faithful conservative, enjoyed all of your books.
Heidi

Welcome to the original full gospel Church, Newt! We love you!

May you embrace the Catholic faith with true humility and love. May God, our Lord guide you always!

Dear Newt: Welcome home

Just be careful Newt which Catholicism you choose. At the moment it is full of rebellious bishops and priests who have lost their way. Many of these are actually de factos schismatics who have invented a neo-catholicism which advocates teachings that the pre-conciliar church would have shuddered at. Some of them will allow you to take Holy Communion even if you support abortion, actively support sodomy and do what you like in the Sunday liturgy regardless of the rubrics for The Holy Mass.
Indeed, Newt the modern Catholic Church is a veritable hornets nest at present. Be careful!

I hope that Newt's conversion is for REAL. If my memory serves me correctly, Holy than thou, Newt lead the charge against Clinton for his lying & daliance with Monica.

Welcome Home to the one, true and holy Roman Catholic Church Family, Mr. Gingrich. You will be respected as a Catholic if you adhere to the orthodox Catholic faith as taught by our Holy Father and the Magisterium, unlike so-called "Catholics" like Kathleen Sebelius, Nancy Pelosi, Ted Kennedy, Barbara Mikulski, Joe Biden, etc. etc.

I would like to hear his thoughts regarding his Communion with Christ through the Holy Eucharist after his confirmation this Easter. (Assuming this is when he is to convert) The peace of Christ our Lord be always with you brother.

Welcome! From a fellow convert who was brought to the faith by a spouse, I can tell you that we who convert have the full faith and what graces He brings to us! Be ready for a deep, ongoing conversation with our Creator, and enjoy all of the rich history and deep devotion that our church afford us.

Bless you Newt, do us all a favor, study and understand our beloved Church more than you ever studied before. Too many come into the Faith only to oppose something we hold dear. Remember the Catholic Church does not accept 'cafeteria catholics'

This is great news! Newt is in our prayers, as is his wife and family. We appreciate all the hard, quality work he has done.

What a pleasant surprise this is. Another story the drive-by media will be sure to avoid. They only like to report on our numbers dropping. We are welcoming over 35 into our parish alone this Easter. Fight the good fight Newt.

If this is the real deal, then congratulations are in order. But there is the matter of the impediments (previous marriages)...

I am delighted to hear of this good news. He may not have always been as he is now but God gives us all the grace to change. I am looking forward to see how this all turns out.

Newt, welcome to the Catholic Church. You will find true spirituality and the ability to grow in a personal relationship with our Savior. Congratulations and best wishes.

Welcome home to the church Newt.

Dear Mr Gingrich,
I am not even an American but here I am ecstatic that you have found the fullness of faith in the Catholic Church. Here in Sri Lanka where the Assemblies of God and other "born again" denominations gloat over the fact that they have in their fold ex-catholics, it is very refreshing to hear of someone joining the Catholic Church! Many catholics here have been so gullible or should I say weak in their faith that as a result have lost so much of the treasure Christ's offers in the church, namely the Sacraments and especially the Holy Eucharist. I can only survive on daily receiving my Lord. He is there to keep me in check!!
God bless you and God bless America
Your sister in Christ

Welcome home from a Catholic lady. In recent months I've heard you on TV and felt that you seemed closer to the Truth. So glad you'll be getting the infusion of graces.

Newt There is agreat paralell between Catholic doctrine and our Constitution. Year after year renegade forces even with in have tried to reinterpet it according to serve thier own deformed consciences. The same attacks we now see by political leaders who are changing our constitution. The enemy is the same, one enemy the one who hates the truth, the one who delights in immorality, the one who depends on our broken nature for access into our lives. Jesus said he watched Satan fall like lightning, and he took a third of the stars of heaven with him. That he was a liar from the beginning and a muderer, and that lying speech was his native tongue.eelCa

You are truly blessed, Newt, to see the truth. There is no salvation outside of the one, holy catholic, and apostolic church. Seek out the traditional Latin Mass.

Congratulations and Welcome Home! God Bless you and your family.

Like the blind man in Bethsaida, Jesus cures him gradually, in steps. So too does he favor some of his people in steps- from nonbelief to a protestant faith and finally to the full revelation of the Catholic faith. Our Lord has taken you to full sight now it is up to you to take full advantage. To those to whom much is given, much is expected.

Congratulations Newt.. Welcome Home!

To all of you wondering about his past marriages.
I went thtough RCIA last year.
Since he was NOT a catholic.. he cant get an annulment.
Also.. RCIA candidates renew thier marriage vows so he and his wife will also have that to look forward to as pat of his conversion.

Thank you Jesus for another convert!

Welcome home Newt to the ONE HOLY CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH! The one true Church that our Lord established! God bless!

Thank God for your conversion to Catholicism. Welcome home, Mr. Gingrich. Please fight the good fight in the USA, especially the fight against abortion. May the Blessed Mother watch over you and guide you always. Again, welcome to the club!

Welcome home to the BANQUET not just the menu (ask Scott Hahn for clarification). I wrote your name in on the 2008 ballot.

David (who implies that Newt is condemned to hell for becoming Catholic)

Please get a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and read it. Pray and ask that the Holy Spirit guide you and open your eyes to what Catholics REALLY believe, not just what someone told you that they believe.
The Catholic faith professes that Jesus Christ is indeed Lord, that he died for our sins, and that salvation is a free gift.
God is the final judge of our souls, and Jesus made that very clear.
Please let us faithful and well-informed Catholics (and not misinformed but well-meaning Protestants) define our faith.
We don't try to define yours.

My response to Todd at his "Catholic Sensibity" blog using his own quote for the same topic:

"then he must have those annulments lined up already"

Now that is a REAL surprise................NOT!

May God bless you Newt, and all candidates and catechumens this easter 2009!

show love - preach the Gospel - welcome all to the one and only Church Christ established in fullest communion - the Catholic Church by faith AND works

Congrats Newt and welcome home!
I was a devout evangelical Christian for over 30 years but never experienced Jesus Christ in such a profoundly personal and intimate way until I came home to the Church Jesus founded.
There is much power in the sacraments to change lives
God bless

The past couple of months I have been watching you on TV and could not pinpoint something about you that had changed. Now I know, Our Lady has captured your heart as she brings you closer to Jesus.

Praise the Lord!!! Newt, may the Lord bless you in our precious Faith in our One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church! Welcome Home!!!

Welcome, and God Bless..

Newt welcome home good buddy. I have to admit I was a fan of yours during the contract with America days then became disturbed with the family problems you had. Im glad you didnt lose heart and searched for truth. "Behold I knock at the door if you answer I shall come in and eat with you" Praise be Jesus!

David Hancock? What are you talking about? It is clear you're ignorant of the Catholic faith. Do you not know we too believe in Jesus Christ? Are you not aware he is our savior as well? Your comment is sophomoric and ridiculous. I will pray for your conversion as it is YOU who will pay dearly for your attacks on your Christian brothers, sir.

Welcome home, Mr. Gingrich.

Welcome home! Mr Speaker, The question now is... How long until President Bush swims up the Tiber?

Welcome to the Catholic church. What a blessing.
My prayers are with you and your family. God Bless you.
Mary Ann

Wow, there's a lot of triumphalist Catholics on this website. One true church and all that. That's a little condescending to all us Protestants don't you think!! I think if we take that idea to it's logical conclusion we should all really be Messianic Jews. If Newt has indeed found his true spiritual home I'm glad for him. I just hope it wasn't to please his current wife. With his track record he may have to change again.

God Blessed you Newt, thank you for listening you have infused my faith in God and my Country.

Welcome home! Congratulations on coming into the Catholic Church. May God Bless you and your family.

Great news ... giving new life as to why I left the Church 20 years ago!

Thanks be to God for your Faith. See what you can do with Rush....He'd make a great Catholic too!

I am very happy for you.

Hallelujah!

Welcome home Newt. May God continually bless you and those you love.

Mr. Speaker, if the news is indeed true, and your marital history can be worked out to the Church's satisfaction, welcome home to the Major League of Christianity.

In addition to your past marital record, I sincerely hope you'll be able to reconcile your free-market oriented views with the more middle of the road approach towards economic and social problem solving.

As a Catholic who returned to the Church, I wish you well, but I hope you've really thought this over. It's not for me to hold any judgment of your soul; but I'm very concerned about your ability to not only comprehend Catholic Social Teaching; but also how it works to help raise all workers above undignified situationa. You have a lot of catching up to do in your homework on this matter. And no doubt your track record indicates you'll be needing a lot of time.

Jesus and the Apostles were all Catholic so it makes sense for Newt.

MARRIAGE ISSUE: Newt does not need an annulment, he needs the much more easily obtainable decree of lack of form, for each of his prior marriages. Then, assuming all is right with the current marriage (she doesn't have any previous, and they have the marriage blessed), this should be a fairly simple and routine matter to clear the way for his reception into the true faith.

Greetings in Christ-
I didn't know that Christianity Today was a Roman Catholic publication?! If it isn't, I'm shocked at how little any evangelicals have to say about this. (Have we lost one? I am reluctant to think so!) For what it's worth..I've never considered Newt to be a Christian, though he may have professed to be one!? Also, I would say that politically he appears to be socially conservative in many ways and I would respect his position on a number of issues. However, on some key moral issues we would quickly part company as he is un-biblical and liberal, both in practice and in his stated positions.
All that said, I wish him the best and pray that he would at last be given a heart that knows...the Living and True God and Jesus Christ His Son whom He raised from the dead and who will deliver us from the coming wrath.
Father, though we justly deserve your wrath, in your justice remember mercy, for Jesus' name sake..Amen
50 million babies since 1973...how much longer Lord?

Newt, here are some suggestions from a Catholic convert of many years: 1) Check out the Traditional Latin Mass offered by traditional Catholic priests. 2) Read the highly respected, scholarly works of English journalist Michael Davies to get a more complete understanding of Vatican II and the changes the Council brought forth in the Church. 3) I especially recommend the chapels, churches and missions of the SSPX--despite what you have probably been hearing. Their priests are validly ordained and completely orthodox. They can also help you sort out the marriage situation according to the true mind of the Church. I think you'll quickly discover that the best "heads" in the Church today are Traditional Catholic "heads". As a new "baby" Catholic you owe it to yourself to, at least, consider my suggestions. God bless.

Welcome home Newt. As a history major, I always enjoyed the fact you brought a different dimension to Congress. To quote Cardinal Newman, "To be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant". I'll pray for you as you complete your journey home.

Welcome Home, Newt, from another conservative convert!

Welcome, Mr. Gingrich, welcome; truly and lovingly welcome.  I too came home to the Catholic Church well into my 50s from being a life-long Methodist.  Through the grace of God I had perhaps always held "Catholic instincts" and finally was drawn home as so many other prodigals have been.  Beyond "one, holy, catholic, and apostalic" our holy Catholic Church is that which our Lord and Savior founded upon the rock of blessed Saint Peter; accept and live each and every one of her teachings for therein lies the true path and the sole means of eternal salvation.  Take joy in knowing that you have found your way home and all of heaven rejoices.  God bless you and yours always.

For those who are (understandably) concerned about Newt's previous marriages, you cannot be received into the Church until those things have been sorted out - which means they have already gone over his past with him.

For those who are actually OPEN to how the Church handles the annulment process, they look for any impediments to the sacramentality of the marriage. In essence, anything that impeded a covenantal joining of the spouses (esp. anything that would have effectively kept God shut out of the marriage at the point of the joining).

Actual cases of people I know include things like "trying it out" with a plan to divorce it if doesn't work out, or one spouse deliberately sterilizing themselves before the marriage with no intention of ever having children, or one spouse who had withheld serious details about his past from his wife (previous marriages & other children), or one spouse having a previously unknown psychological impairment (personality disorder) affecting their ability to commit to a lifetime relationship.

Yes, there have been abuses to the system, but the magesterium has been working towards cleaning it up and it is very wrong for people with no knowledge of any details whatsoever of Newt's previous marriages to assign evil when the only evidence of it at this point is their own sinfully cynical minds.

First off, I was not aware of Newt having any previous church affiliation. Newt,do as you wish, but please do not start off by bashing and trashing evangelicals like the liberal mainstream media does 24-07-12.

What wonderful news. Welcome home Mr. Speaker. Don't forget to watch or listen to EWTN.

I love all Christians and thank God for the common confession of "one Lord, one faith and one baptism" shared by Protestants and Catholics alike. I am shocked by the arrogant assertions posted here that the Roman Catholic Church is somehow purer and more authentic than any other. Secular and sacred history vindicates the Reformation in light of the corruption and excesses of the Roman Church. A little humility is called for here, Catholic friends. Christ is the head of the church and he lives among us Protestants and conveys grace in the Eucharist to us, too! Sorry to disappoint but we are a part of the universal church as well. Best wishes to Newt if he's finally found Jesus as Lord among you. He's behaved very unChritianly in the past. I pray for a quickening of faith among millions of Protestants and Catholics whose faith and trust is not yet found in a life-giving union with Jesus the Christ.

Mr. Gingrich is one of the most fascinating speakers
and astute political thinkers of our time. It is
extremely edifying to all Catholics that a figure of
his intellectual stature could deduce through reason
the validity of the Catholic position, especially in
the world in which we live today. Holy Mother Church
welcomes him with open arms.

Well, I'm nearly speechless and slightly skeptical (sorry). As a protestant I am greatly offended by the many comments "welcoming Newt to the 'one true church'" - not that the Baptist Church is the "one true church" either, but come on! Show a little decency! This reminds me of the way you all blasted Rod Dreher when he converted from Catholicism to Orthodox. Really unkind. As far as skeptical, I hope that any religious decision anyone makes are genuine; however, a few years back, a Kansas senator (not Bob Dole) converted to Catholicism because he thought being associated with a less extreme group of people would help him in his future run for president (it didn't). So, of course, my first thought when I read this article was, I wonder if Newt is thinking about running for president. And guess what - he's thinking about it, according to today's news. Coincidence?

If Newt was ever truly 'Saved' grounded in the Word of God, not the spurious 'Traditions' of men, he would never forsake The Lord Jesus Christ to enter Catholicism; for the Jesus of Catholicism IS NOT the Jesus of the Bible, why not?

Catholicism's plan of salvation has Mary at the very center, literally exhalted idolatrously, '...obtain pardon for what we fear, FOR YOU (Mary) ARE THE ONLY HOPE OF SINNERS. We hope to obtain the forgivness of our sins THROUGH YOU, Blessed Lady, in you is our hope of reward." (Saint Agustine (d.430) Dictionary of Mary (catholic Book Publishing Co.: 1997, 1985, p.532) Blasphemy, Idolatry, utterly unscriptural false doctrine. Jesus IS the Only Mediator between God and men on earth.(I Tim. 2:5).

I just need to complete what I stated in my previous post.

Hear the Word of God, not the man-made Traditions of Catholicism.

"And this is eternal life, that you may KNOW (Who?) You, the only true God, and (Who?) Jesus Christ (not a mention of Mary!) whom you have sent..." (John 17:3) "But He (jesus) He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. Therefore, He is also able to (do what?) SAVE (to what extent?) TO THE UTTERMOST those who (first go to Mary,NO!) since He always live to MAKE INTERCESSION for them" (Heb. 7:24) "For through HIM (Jesus) we both HAVE ACCESS (By how many spirits?) ONE SPIRIT, (The Holy Spirit) UNTO THE FATHER." (Eph. 2:18)."For there is ONE MEDIATOR between (who and where?) God (In heaven) and men (0n earth) The Man Christ Jesus." (I Tim. 2:5). "Jesus saith unto him, I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH, and THE LIFE, no man cometh unto the Father but BY ME." (John 14:6) emphasis added. Catholicism Jesus is ANOTHER Jesus, its spirit, is ANOTHER spirit, and its gospel IS ANOTHER gospel. God help Gingrich and those other convets to this utter maze and labrynth of False, erroneous doctrine!

To one of the ladies above, I have never heard a Protestant say that God will not be with us always, Protestants are the ones who say no matter the sin you can be forgiven if you have faith in Jesus not by works, payment of money to the Church, or being in a particular church. Faith is what does it. Anyway, I'm glad to see that Catholics are reading this Evangelical site, I like this site even if I'm not Evangelical. If Newt really has faith in Jesus it doesn't matter what church he's in. Jesus was Jewish and was sent to Earth to turn the Jewish back to God as they had become too immensed in law. And the Catholic Church reached that point too and Luther got all of us including the Catholic Church away from the Church laws back to faith in Jesus Christ only. I looked up at the Cross with Jesus on it one day and realized Jesus is risen, he's off the Cross and in heaven with his Father waiting to take us home. That sudden realization like a flash of light from him led me into Protestantism with thankfullness for the strength of the Catholic Church. Hopefully Newt will truly follow Jesus instead of just saying he does. We all have to make our own trip which by the way is a life long adventure. What's important is that we make the trip.

Mary ann.... Catholic is the one true religion.
I am a recent convert and when I saw that the Catholic faith was founded by Jesus and the protestant religions were founded by some guy a thousand years later as a spin off...., that is all it took for me.

The Roman Catholic Church is the oldest branch of the Christianity religion. The Church’s history spans nearly 2,000 years long, making it a fundamental part of the Christianity as a whole. Jesus of Nazareth founded the Catholic Church.

For instance;
Presbyterian Church
Year Founded - 1560 - Scotland
Founder - John Knox

Methodist Church founded by John Welsey in the 1700's.
A bunch of spin offs from that....

It goes on and on and on.....
The only Jesus founded Church is Catholic.

So... what you get after all the 'take out what you dont want to do' religions... is a watered down version of what Jesus wanted.

See? That is all it took for me.

Congratulations for comming home!
And, yes we know you are a sinner, like anyone else in the chruch. But a repented sinner, and that's all the Lord ask from you, and from me.
The intelectual strength of the faith in pursue of the truth and charity brought you to the one, universal church.
Your wife was but a tool in God's hands.
God bless

Dear Mr. Gingrich,

Welcome in "Patria" ( home ). The place of the fullness of truth. Those that judge you are not perfect either; for they are sinners like all the rest of us. We are of a fallen nature!!!

Can imagine the difficulty in making your decision. A mighty big, and couragious step. Hopefully you will continue as a soldier of Christ, even unto every political action and expression.

As a Moderator ( one of a multitude throughout the Roman Church ) advancing the cause for the pre-Vatican II form of worship the so-called
"Tridentine Rite";--now named by Pope Benedict XVI,
the "extraordinary Rite", I was told that I was a fool for working for a lost cause. My answer," When working for the greater glory, and worship of God, it gives me great joy to be his fool!!!

God bless you, and the wife that helped you !!!

In Domino'

G.Luciano

God bless you Newt; may God be glorified in all things and all people.

Jesus did not found the Roman Catholic Church--what a lie. It is disappointing that Mr. Gingrich just exchanged one religion for another. He spoke at our daughter's graduation from Libery Univ. Jerry Falwell would be very disappointed. This is what happens when one mixes politics with religion--false religious moralism and no saving faith in Christ.

I know I will be in Heaven when I die because of Christ's perfect and finished sacrafice for me. The pope plans to visit Israel in May to visit where Jesus prayed for world peace. That is a lie, too. No where in Scripture did Jesus pray for world peace. In fact, in John 17 He states He doesn't pray for the world at all. Wake up before it is too late. Read the Scriptures not the R.C. canon for your beliefs.

We will pray that God will convict Newt, through the Holy Spirit, to stay in a church body that respects the Bible. Catholicism has never been "a church" let alone a "true" one. Read the book of Acts, it's in the New Testament. It covers the expansion of the early local churches. There is nothing remotely resembling catholicism in it. (or rest of the New Testament, for that matter)

Maybe I'm missing something, but it appears that Gingrich is still living in sin, in an adulterous "marriage". Is he even eligible to licitly receive the sacrament of Confirmation until he repents and changes his ways? Or is he "converting" to become a Republican cafeteria Catholic, choosing not to put the indissolubility of marriage on his plate? (Boy, that'll make a powerful ally in the struggle to preserve the traditional family!) Remember, the sacraments can be received to one's own damnation, a point which is emphasized in some of the older liturgies.

It's been said many time, but WELCOME HOME, Newt. God Bless you and your Calista!

It's been said many, many times here, but WELCOME HOME, Newt. God Bless you and your Calista!

There is no sense in talking about the Protestant "church"--at least not for those who believe that the Bible is only authority. If "church" means an entity with spiritual authority, then there is no Protestant church as such. The church, for believing Protestants, is the body of believers. It doesn't matter if you are Baptist or non-denominational or Presbyterian or Catholic--if you believe that Christ died for your sins and through him you are forgiven, you are a part of Christ's church.

I'm very surprised and disappointed by this. I've never understood how an individual could have such fealty to a fallible human being such as the pope. Only God is our father. (And please don't give me that "infallible pope" stuff.) History is replete with examples of popely/priestly foibles.

I have had enormous respect for Newt's talent and intelligence, but I think this is just an example of a man wanting to please his newest wife. I've seen if before.

It was never Luther's intent to leave the Catholic faith and certainly not his intent to start new denominations. Was there corruption and excess? Yes, and you can find those in Protestant evangelical and pentecostal churches as well because we're all humans.

When Ted Haggard was found to be living in secret sin, his church didn't throw everything out and start a brand new denomination; the same can be said of all the other pastors who have committed grievous sins. It's interesting that there are similarities in the discipleship movement that Luther himself despised - the complete exercise of too much authority over people's lives (we were involved in this ungodly fellowship for five years), deciding who is righteous by their complete obedience and allegiance to church elders, or who is in sin by those who refused to give up their reasoning; telling members how they should live, what they should and should not do, where to give their money and how much, etc. The abuse of authority in this movement is a corrupting influence on those who are in charge.

Btw, I'm not a Catholic, but a Pentecostal who respects and admires the RCC. We can learn much from our RCC friends and vice versa. We are all the body of Christ.

I saw Newt at my local cathedral a while back. I thought he was already Catholic! This is great news!

I always knew Gingrich was a totalitarian.

Now I have proof.

He'll be right at home in the pagan church.

Newt,
Don't be fooled by those who call the Catholic Church, The Church of Jesus Christ or "home".

Jesus Christ never attended church, he went to the local synagog! So if you want to attend the Church of Jesus Christ, go to a Synagog!

Independence from denominationalism is not a bad thing, it is a GOOD THING!

Faith in Jesus Christ is THE SAVING THING!

Praise Jesus!!! God bless you Newt!!! Welcome home to the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church founded by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ...I will be praying for you and your family as you complete your journey into the Church...I thank God for the guiding and saving light of Truth, which is proclaimed by the Catholic Church!!

I pray with hope and love that we may be ONE with our Protestant brothers and sisters in proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a world that is so hungry for God's love!

Newt, read Ephesians 2:18.

We are saved by God's grace alone,
by faith alone,
in Christ alone
and not by any works.

Read your bible and God Bless.

Your faith is your gift. Always live in His presence and see Him in everyone you encounter.Keep the Faith! God Bless You!

My mom was Baptist and my dad, Catholic. I am a practicing Catholic who loves the Church. My youngest son is a priest. I don't condemn those of other faiths or argue with them; I believe that is uncharitable. However, though I welcome a convert to the Catholic faith... I would hope that Mr. Gingrich 's past marriages & divorces are properly 'vetted' according to Canon Law. Many Catholics including myself were absolutely disgusted with the Ted Kennedy fiasco and his so-called annulment which his sacramental wife appealed to Rome about. Please keep it clean & honest.

I think many Roman Catholics are going to be surprised when they get to Heaven & see just how many Protestants are there but equally, I think that many Protestants will be surprised at how many Roman Catholics are there, too!!!

(In the Greek, the word "believe" means: Trust in, rely on, cleave to & give one's whole being to)
Therefore,

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved!!!

Dear Mr. Speaker,
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to membership in the Roman Catholic Church. My the blessing of Jesus Christ be with you.

I read the book "surprised by truth" by Patrick Madrid and I recommend it to our Protestant brethens. I learned a lot about Protestant misconceptions and reinforced my beliefs in the Scripture, Tradition and the church founded by Jesus Christ Himself. The argument about the latter is very well documented and most convincing.
Welcome Newt to our Catholic community.

John Read your Bible! and you will be trully "surprised by THE Truth".

Jesus is our High Priest not the pope
The Holy Spirit is Vicarius Christi not the pope
Christ and Christ alone is our Savior!

Welcome home, Newt! The reunification of God's visible Church does indeed seem more imminent.

May God have mercy on you and all catechumens, forgive your sins, and fill you His saving grace. Amen.

And, God bless David Hancock.

+Timothy

Speaker Gingrich, I contacted you back in 1975 for assistance in an assignment. You wrote that I was too critical and my unit moving to Patrick AFB needed my expertise and experience. However, before I signed into my unit, a personnel clerk recognized my name when introduced in a Baptist Church, and informed me that the USAF was forcing me to cross train into another career field. Wonder what happened to my needed expertise and experience which the Air Force suggested you write?

I find in God's Word salvation is by repentance and faith alone in Jesus Christ that He paid in full the penalty for our sins, something we ourselves cannot do. The Council of Trent of the Catholic Church condemns any man or woman who claims that they are saved by faith alone in Jesus Christ alone.

The Scriptures in both the Catholic and King James Bible teaches that Salvation comes not by or through a church but only in the Person of Jesus Christ. Catholicism teaches salvation through sacraments and works, contrary to the Scripture. Jesus teaches "Come unto Me (alone)".

You are a very wise man, but wisdom of men is blind. Only the wisdom given by the Spirit of God will cause a man to see and know the Truth.

I boast and brag not of my faith, but I brag and boast of my Lord and Savior, Who gave me the faith to believe in Him. You can believe in Him too, Mr. Gingrich, but not as long as you trust in the sacraments of the Catholic Church. By the way the only Priestly office in the New Testament Church is the Lord Jesus Christ, Himself. The Mediator.

I would hope you will contact me at my fax number, and I will be glad to answer any questions that you may have. Fax: 386-449-0003

Saints be praised, Newt! You have made Father Feeney's day in Heaven today a most special one, for he accepted at face value the ancient Church doctrine that has thrice been taught by Holy Fathers with the aura of infallibilty, namely "Outside the Church There is no Salvation". Perhaps your conversion will cause tens of thousands of Protestants and Orthodox Christians to wake up and acknowledge the primacy of Rome, before it is too late?

Bobby’s (Allen's) Church, the Roman Catholic Church, is not Christ’s Church. Guard yourself from the snares of the devil and “test the spirits” of men. (1 John 4: 1) Take note of Rome’s love affair with Islam as she forges an alliance with wicked and evil men. Look at her piety and see the guises of the devil: “For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.” (2 Corinthians 11: 14) The beast has an insatiable appetite that’s growing “worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.” (2 Timothy 3: 13) If you have peace with Rome, you better examine your heart, for Jesus did not come to bring peace, but a sword (division); it begins in the home and outward into the world, for His name’s sake. The gospel of Jesus Christ divides.
-----------------

If you join the ranks of those who are now followers of Rome (Tony Blair, Allen Hunt et al.), you will only find misery in the end. If you can't see the guises of this evil in the midst of our society (the Roman Catholic Church), you are indeed blind. Sadly, most are blind - i.e. Baptists, Methodists, etc.- and are going down that wide gate that leads to destruction. (Matthew 7:13) Go, go to her and see what happens to your soul in the end. Take up the fight to build the "Culture of Peace" with Islam and see what happens when you find out that it was all a lie.

1. Peace and security are much needed in our present world marked by many conflicts and a feeling of insecurity.

2. Both Christians and Muslims consider peace a gift from God and, at the same time, the fruit of human endeavor. No true and lasting peace can be achieved without justice and equality among persons and communities.

3. Religious leaders, especially Muslims and Christians, have the duty to promote a culture of peace, each within his respective community, especially through teaching and preaching.

4. A culture of peace should permeate all aspects of life: religious formation, education, interpersonal relations and the arts in their diverse forms. To this end, scholastic books should be revised in order not to contain material which may offend the religious sentiments of other believers, at times through the erroneous presentation of dogmas, morals or history of other religions.

5. The media have a major role and responsibility in the promotion of positive and respectful relations among the faithful of various religions.

6. Recognizing the strong link between peace and human rights, special attention was given to the defense of the dignity of the human person and his/her rights, especially regarding freedom of conscience and of religion.

7. Youth, the future of all religions and of humanity itself, need special care in order to be protected from fanaticism and violence, and to become peace builders for a better world.

8. Mindful of the suffering endured by the peoples of the Middle East due to non-resolved conflicts, the participants, in respect of the competence of the political leaders, ask to make use, through dialogue, of the resources of international law to solve the problems at stake in truth and justice.

Grateful to Almighty God for the abundant fruits of this meeting, the participants agreed to have the next meeting of the Committee in Cairo, from Tuesday, Feb. 23 to Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010.

It figures that this demonic SOB would one day show his true colors and shack up with the Whore Of Babylon just like Tony Blair did. He probably was a Crypto-Catholic all along, anyhow.

"The Empire Never Ended" -- PK DICK

This is great news! Christians must re-unite in order to witness to the world. Jesus tells us so in the Bible (cf. John 17). God bless Mr. Gingrich.

From a Roman Catholic family in Colorado,WELCOME and CONGRATULATIONS!!! Many blessings also to your dear Calista. I am sure that St. Aquinas and St. Thomas More had a hand in this, too. Newt, you are a beloved statesman, and hope one day to address you as "Mr. President." Perez Family

This is perfect. It's hard to imagine two institutions less suited to modern life than the Republican Party and the Catholic Church.

Who's next? Michelle Bachman?

For those Protestants confused by the amount of Catholoics on the Christianity Today website - you shouldn't be shocked. Protestants are joining the Catholic Church in droves. You owe it to yourself to get informed b/c your Catholic misconceptions do no one any favors, especially yourself.

Here are some solid books:

* Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Catholic - by David Currie (convert whose parents taught at Moody Bible Institute)

* Rome Sweet Home - by Scott Hahn (Presbyterian minister convert to Catholicism - great book - not so inviting title)

*A Biblical Defense of Catholicism - by Dave Armstrong

You also might like to take a look at a couple of great websites:

www.conversiondiary.com

www.firstcomeslove.wordpress.com

www.fisheaters.com/challenge.html (one that offers a solid Catholic challenge to Protestant theology)

I become Catholic this Easter-and I have never seen Jesus worshiped as intensely as within the CC - nor the Pro-life message instilled as strongly - at every Mass.

Again, if you don't get it, read just one of these books (or John 6 a couple of times) & you will!

The question is not whether there are some Catholics who are Christians - there are definitely. As someone who does full-time pro-life work, these are the people I work with almost exclusively.

The question is, is what they believe true?

Is it true that Mary was born sinless?
Is it true that if you don't go to church you could end up missing heaven?
Is it true that you need to eat Jesus to get grace?
etc.

Those aren't small questions. And those are ones that millions of Catholics outside North American are asking and why many of them are becoming Evangelical Christians.

Those like Newt who convert the other way are those whose knowledge of Biblical text is lacking.

As Evangelicals, we've always had the harder job of being able to look to truth, not a man in Rome to tell us how we should live and what we should believe. Does the teachings of the Bible conform with reality or do they not? Is there historical evidence for what we believe or is there not?

The Reformers knew this and taught not that they but that the truth should shape what we believe. Catholics have taught that their tradition should shape what they believe.

If faced with those options, it should really be truth not the opinion of a self proclaimed infallible man who I would listen to.

Besides, isn't Roman Catholic an oxymoron?

Hmmm... Newt becoming Catholic? Plenty of Protestants are sincere in such a conversion, nothing wrong with that, but in this case I'm skeptical. Newt was the only Republican at the convention scowling as Palin spoke, and he's got his eyes on the prize, president or vp.
If he's sincere, fine. But this move could just be another strategic maneuver from a moral crusader hypocrite. I say wait and see.

Why didn't Gingrich have to wait until Easter vigil to become a Catholic, like others such as myself were told to do?

Is it because he's famous and rich...

The key doctrines and objectives of the Roman Catholic Church have not changed, despite all the "ecumenical rhetoric" of loving the "separated brethren", of becoming more "liberal", etc. The Roman Catholic Church has never repudiated her "right" to use force wherever and whenever she has the opportunity to do so. She has never repudiated her "right" to use torture. She (at her highest levels) still hates, despite her "ecumenical rhetoric" to the contrary, Jews, Protestants, Orthodox Christians, other non-Catholic Christian independent groups of believers, and even those Roman Catholics who dare to question any of her doctrines or practices!

He became Catholic early most likely because he is a Baptized Christian, and if you appeal for immediate ability to participate in the sacraments, I believe that a Bishop can grant that, given that you demonstrate knowledge of Catholic beliefs, and promise loyalty to those.

Most RCIA people want the full measure of time to reflect before Becoming Catholic - but even I could have done it sooner.

Also, I suspect, that as a prominent figure, he was getting counseled privately, and wanted to not take any focus away from the celebrants & celebration of Jesus at the Easter Vigil.

I suspect a run for the Presidency. Hannity and Rush are now trying hard to get Catholics to distance themselves from Obama. Hmmmmmmm, Gingrich has been married three times. Do we absolve him of those so easily?

What a charade. He always been catholic. In speech, conduct, behaviour and ideologies. Nothing new under the sun. Nothing more than a mere protocol to legitimize something that was always hidden like dirt under the carpet.

It is disturbing to see such derisionof this based on his past marital infidelity. While that is important, and is an issue he will have to address with the people should he seek a political position in the future,it is absolutely not an obstacle to his conversion. The central tenant of Christianity is the forgiveness of sin. Therefore, one can only assume that confession and absolution were a part of his personal conversion process. After all, without the remission of sin through Christ, Christianity is pointless. The Church is the road, not the destination. The destnation is (Comm)Union with Christ. What was true for Augustine is now true for Newt. He is on the right road now. Thanks be to a Generous GOD!

Newt, wonderful news. I heard it first on Mike Wallace's show this morning. Scott Hahn's book "ROME SWEET HOME" was the turning point for me.
There aren't many protestant denominations I have not researched and prayed about and joined for a season. As a son of a southern Baptist preacher, you may well imagine the reconciling I had to do with my learning of so many years. But truth is truth, and I found it at RCIA. "I will baptize you with clean water, and you shall be clean." Welcome home my political hero !!!
PS just reading other posts here explains once again why there are so many thousands of protestant denominations all claiming to do the work of the one true God.

How the HELL (and I purposely use this word) can someone be influenced by pope benedict to convert to catholicism. That SOB allowed 100's of children be molested and DID NOTHING. After taking two masters level church history courses, I knew how much of a crap shoot the catholic church had become - not to mention FAR FROM WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES. Consider Protestantism after watching this movie (or just watch the trailor): http://www.deliverusfromevilthemovie.com/index_flash.php

Christianity is better than this pope (small p) and I am saddened for Newt. I still have great respect for this man though.

Add me to the chorus of Evangelicals who have joined the Catholic Church (amazed there are so many here)!!

Welcome aboard, Speaker!!

The Church is even bigger on the inside than it is on the outside...

To my non-Catholic brothers and sisters who are preplexed by this, please pray with a humble and teachable spirit and just seek to understand what Catholics really believe. Please listen to us patiently, especially when we sin or speak incorrectly or talk in strange terms. If you really desire the Truth, in time we won't seem so odd to you..

This is certainly interesting reading! And I, who was raised a Catholic, and left at age 19, never really knowing what the Church was all about, then becoming a protestant for 20 years, raising my family in a protestant faith, and then left because I searched the truth, and was not finding it there. My search for truth led me right back to the Catholic Church, and ANYONE can discover this if they will only SERIOUSLY read the history of the First Fathers of the Church! It was really so easy! The protestant blogs here, I will pray for all of you, you are filled with misleading anti-Catholic mumbo-jumbo. I DARE you to search honestly and openly, The Catholic Church is where you will end up! I have been there, and done that, and now I am so utterly happy in my faith. I want to share it with the world. I always liked you Newt, and I am very happy to hear this news! Congratulations!

So Newt,
If you were truly a follower of Jesus Christ, there's no way you could even think about becoming a Catholic. I've always been a fan here in Georgia, but I really question your motives for converting to Catholicism. Again, if you truly understood the Bible at its roots, you would have never converted. I truly am sad and sorry. You should spend some time researching the history of the Catholic church as you have researched for the books you have written. I believe you would be reverting back to your real home of Christianity.

welcome to this Catholic Church, built upon Peter by Christ himself.
It is a Church made up of Sinners and Saints undergoing Struggles of Faith, Sin and repentance and conversion in Life.
Hoping, you like us will nurture this Faith that God gave you freely.
For us, who know the Canonical bible only came about by the 5th Century ( Council of Carthage etc), we rely on the teaching authority of the Church for our guidance just like the early Christians did from the 1st to the 5th Century. There was then for 400 years NO Bible in existence, that is now so heavily relied upon by our Protestant brothers ( Sola Scriptura) Just like them, we rely on the Church as our teacher and logically as well, we rely on the Bible.

I suppose that Newt has been forgiven by the Catholic Church for breaking the sixth commandment since he married his object of adultery. (For the second time no less!) His first wife was his tenth grade geometry teacher at Baker High School in Columbus, Georgia. When she moved to Atlanta Newt went to Emory to be with her and married her after graduation. He dumped her, while she was dying of cancer, in order to marry his second wife. By his own admission he was having an affair for six years with this latest wife.

The Catholic Church is welcome to Newt. We secularists want no part of him. Just watch him around the women in your congregations.

Nice work Newt! Just about the time I thought you had it together you pull this stunt.
Catholicism is a false religion and always has been.
Oh well, at least you are attending SOME kind of church albeit
Robert Taylor

Uh, Newt? Did you ever read where the Apostle Paul had to deal with many problems in the Corinthian church and he told them that while he was among them he was going to be concerned about nothing but Christ crucified? Do you know, Newt, who that was that died once for all time and all that was accomplished in that one time event when the most literal blood and body of God the Son was on that altar of the cross once for all time? Just like Paul clearly and specifically says?

But that is how sufficient the blood and body in the death of the infinite Son of God truly was. It covered all sins of humanity from Adam up to that time, around that time, and right up to today and until He returns. It can most certainly be that sufficient just once and for all time, because only God could do such a thing. That, and that alone, is to be the object of our faith: Christ crucified and risen, once, for all time. Then God sees that our hearts are truly trusting in what was the most important and costly event to Him, once and for all time.

This is the truth of the Good News, Gospel, that must be embrace by all for the gift of eternal life, just like John 3:16 and so many other verses say that we can read for ourselves with the help of the Holy Spirit and teachers God gives the Church, the Body of Christ all around the world, who handle the Word accurately or rightly divide it.

Please, know Jesus according to His words alone, and none of religiously fanciful men no matter how sincere they may appear in ritual and moving surroundings.

My name is Edward Ferrer, and I am an ex-Catholic! Mr. Speaker, I always ahd respect
for you, and BTW, when I lived in Jonesboro,
Ga., you were my Congressman. I am a staunch
Conservaive, like you are, as I understand.
However my love for God and people (which I am acquiring, thanks to my Lord and Redeemer,
Jesus/Yeshua!), can't in all conscience extend to the Roman Church. My prayers are
with you on your choice, which I respect, albeit reluctantly. Since you chose to enter
this church, there is nothing I cna do personally about that.

I pray that the Holy
Spirit (and not the spirit of this world).
will show you the TRUTH! Whenever I do some-
thing that I'm not suppose to do (for which
I have to confess to Him, every time) He is
there to guide and to make sure that I don't
deviate from Him. And He always gets His Way!
I am very grateful to Him, PTL! The Holy Spirit CAN convict you,and I pray that He will do it for your SAKE, as well! He is NO
respecter of persons. and you can be sure of
that!

Mr.Gingrich, the future DOES NOT belong
to Rome. It belongs to Jesus Christ, The Messiah, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, and
Prince of Peace! He will take His Bride, The
Church, HOME, to His Father's House, and He
will LITERALLY rule the World. I'm waiting on
Him! Blessings and MARANATHA!!

Welcome to the one and only true Church, established by Christ for his word to be told to the entire world! The "New Israel"... we are all called to be God's chosen people!

With all it's ups and downs through out history.. this IS the closest thing to a truly "Christian" church.... one need only look at their teachings on social justice, freedom, human dignity and life.

It takes a strong man to make a big step and admit his past was just a bit imperfect at times...but to make a leap into our Catholic faith, and live it daily, is one step closer to Heaven. God bless your past Baptist faith; apparently it gave you wonderful guidance.

I can say that there is no fuller faith walk then the one that you will walk within the Catholic Church! I will pray for you as you feel the fullness of receiving our Lord at Easter! Blessings.

I too came home to the Catholic Church well into my 50s from being a life-long Methodist. Through the grace of God I had perhaps always held "Catholic instincts" and finally was drawn home as so many other prodigals have been.

thats a big move a lot of courage requires for that Gingrich is known for his frequently harsh rhetoric, and he didn't hold back in speaking about Obama.Gingrich has been mentioned as a possible 2012 presidential candidate along with other Republicans, including former vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, Minnesota Gov

It takes a strong man to make a big step and admit his past was just a bit imperfect at times...but to make a leap into our Catholic faith, and live it daily, is one step closer to Heaven.

Welcome home Mr.Gingrich! My prayer is that many politicians will open their minds and hearts to the fullness of truth given to the Catholic Church established by Jesus Christ.

Your faith is your biggest gift gifted by god. Always live in His presence and see Him in everyone you encounter.Keep the Faith! God Bless You!

The first Church was not the Catholic Church. The Roman Catholic Church contends that its origin is the death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ in approximately 30 A.D. The Catholic Church proclaims itself to be the Church that Jesus Christ died for, the Church that was established and built by the Apostles. Is that the true origin of the Catholic Church? On the contrary. Even a cursory reading of the New Testament will reveal that the Catholic Church does not have its origin in the teachings of Jesus, or His apostles. In the New Testament, there is no mention of the papacy, worship / adoration of Mary (or the immaculate conception of Mary, the perpetual virginity of Mary, the assumption of Mary, or Mary as co-redemptrix and mediatrix), petitioning saints in Heaven for their prayers, apostolic succession, the ordinances of the church functioning as sacraments, infant baptism, confession of sin to a priest, purgatory, indulgences, or the equal authority of church tradition and Scripture. So, if the origin of the Catholic Church is not in the teachings of Jesus and His apostles, as recorded in the New Testament, what is the true origin of the Catholic Church? Next message.

For the first 280 years of Christian history, Christianity was banned by the Roman empire, and Christians were terribly persecuted. This changed after the “conversion” of the Roman Emperor Constantine. Constantine “legalized” Christianity at the Edict of Milan in A.D. 313. Later, in A.D. 325, Constantine called together the Council of Nicea, in an attempt to unify Christianity. Constantine envisioned Christianity as a religion that could unite the Roman Empire, which at that time was beginning to fragment and divide. While this may have seemed to be a positive development for the Christian church, the results were anything but positive. Just as Constantine refused to fully embrace the Christian faith, but continued many of his pagan beliefs and practices, so the Christian church that Constantine promoted was a mixture of true Christianity and Roman paganism.

Constantine found that with the Roman Empire being so vast, expansive, and diverse – not everyone would agree to forsake their religious beliefs and instead embrace Christianity. So, Constantine allowed, and even promoted, the “Christianization” of pagan beliefs. Completely pagan and utterly unbiblical beliefs were given new “Christian” identities. Some clear examples of this are as follows:

(1) The Cult of Isis, an Egyptian mother-goddess religion, was absorbed into Christianity by replacing Isis with Mary. Many of the titles that were used for Isis, such as “Queen of Heaven,” “Mother of God,” and “theotokos” (God-bearer) were attached to Mary. Mary was given an exalted role in the Christian faith, far beyond what the Bible ascribes to her, in order to attract Isis worshippers to a faith they would not otherwise embrace. Many temples to Isis were, in fact, converted into temples dedicated to Mary. The first clear hints of Catholic Mariology occur in the writings of Origen, who lived in Alexandria, Egypt, which happened to be the focal point of Isis worship.

(2) Mithraism was a religion in the Roman Empire in the 1st through 5th centuries A.D. It was very popular among the Romans, especially among Roman soldiers, and was possibly the religion of several Roman emperors. While Mithraism was never given “official” status in the Roman empire, it was the de-facto official religion until Constantine and succeeding Roman emperors replaced Mithraism with Christianity. One of the key features of Mithraism was a sacrificial meal, which involved eating the flesh and drinking the blood of a bull. Mithras, the god of Mithraism, was “present” in the flesh and blood of the bull, and when consumed, granted salvation to those who partook of the sacrificial meal (theophagy, the eating of one’s god). Mithraism also had seven “sacraments,” making the similarities between Mithraism and Roman Catholicism too many to ignore. Constantine and his successors found an easy substitute for the sacrificial meal of Mithraism in concept of the Lord’s Supper / Christian Communion. Sadly, some early Christians had already begun to attach mysticism to the Lord’s Supper, rejecting the Biblical concept of a simple and worshipful remembrance of Christ’s death and shed blood. The Romanization of the Lord’s Supper made the transition to a sacrificial consumption of Jesus Christ, now known as the Catholic Mass / Eucharist, complete. Ihope this helps some. It is important that folks realize that many Catholics seek outwardly religious people and adornments. Call no man Father...??

The origin of the Catholic Church is the tragic compromise of Christianity with the pagan religions that surrounded it. Instead of proclaiming the Gospel and converting the pagans, the Catholic Church “Christianized” the pagan religions, and “paganized” Christianity. By blurring the differences and erasing the distinctions, yes, the Catholic Church made itself attractive to the people of the Roman empire. One result was the Catholic Church becoming the supreme religion in the “Roman world” for centuries. However, another result was the most dominant form of Christianity apostatizing from the true Gospel of Jesus Christ and the true proclamation of God’s Word.

2 Timothy 4:3-4 declares, “For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” This is the dad consequence of man made religion. Hope this helps Catholics and any failed Church who left the gospel for the ''other'' Jesus..

It takes a strong man to make a big step and admit his past was just a bit imperfect at times...but to make a leap into our Catholic faith, and live it daily, is one step closer to Heaven.

Faith and reason have always been integral to one another. It appears Newt came to the truth of faith through reason, the way many of us have.

God Bless You Mr.Gingrich,welcome home!!

It's hard to believe, the Catholic faith professes that Jesus Christ is indeed Lord, that he died for our sins, and that salvation is a free gift.

Can anyone explain if Gingrich can become Catholic while on his 3rd marriage. Is he getting annulments on his first two. Hope he can legitimately become Catholic.

May you embrace the Catholic faith with true humility and love. May God, our Lord guide you always!!

Congratulations Mr. Gingrich, Welcome aboard. The waters may be choppy but you are in good company. A faithful conservative, enjoyed all of your books.

In the one Gingrich book that I've read, and a poor effort I remember it being, he seem to have had a strikingly Gnostic understanding of religion.

Congrats Newt, you will fit right in with the Catholics. I don't see how you will be judged harshly as a repeat adulterer by these folks, considering that the CC has been so reluctant to excise pedophile priests from their ranks. So relax and have a good ride as a catholic. Just remember to pray to Mary and you'll do just fine.

Welcome home Newt!

"To be deep in history, is to cease being Protestant"
John Henry Cardinal Newman - convert to the Catholic Church and Author of 'An Essay on the Develpment of Christian Doctrine' which is a must read for those falsely "claiming" they are the true church founded by Christ.

First, I pray that Mr. Gingrich's conversion was sincere and of God.

Second, as someone who does Tribunal work relative to the annulment process, those who have noted that "because he was a previously married to Protestant(s)," he doesn't need an annulment(s) are wrong!

Those who proclaim such falsehoods should consult a canon lawyer before posting information that is in error, and may negatively influence a previously married person to pursue the true teachings of the Church's law.. There is enough misleading information about the annulment process already out there, and the Church does not need any more ill-informed opinions.

As to Mr. Gingrich's motivation, that is between him and God, the ultimate judge of us all. But I ask of anyone who opines as to the annulment process to first do their homework. Finally, there is this notion that annulments are a means of money-making for the Church. This is so far from reality that I am amazed that this "gossip" still persists. There are numous phases of the process and persons involved in a formal case. I know of no Tribunal who "makes money" on this.

Working for 2 dioceses I can attest that the amount charged results in a loss, yes a loss, for the Diocese. And if there is financial hardship involved, Tribunals will take that into consideration and make adjustments. This comes from personal experience. Enough said.

Blessings to all -
