Gingrich to Convert to Catholicism

Sarah Pulliam Bailey

Buried in an large New York Times Magazine profile of Newt Gingrich is a little nugget of information: A Baptist since graduate school, Gingrich said he will soon convert to Catholicism, his wife's faith.

Gingrich.jpg

At a moment when the role of religious fundamentalism in the party is a central question for reformers, Gingrich, rather than making any kind of case for a new enlightenment, has in fact gone to great lengths to placate Christian conservatives. The family-values crowd has never completely embraced Newt, probably because he has been married three times, most recently to a former Hill staff member, Callista Bisek. In 2006, though, Gingrich wrote a book called "Rediscovering God in America" - part of a new canon of work he has done reaffirming the role of religion in public life. The following year, he went on radio with the evangelical minister James Dobson to apologize for having been unfaithful to his second wife.

The Rev. G. Avery Lee, a longtime pastor of St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans who died earlier this year, wrote to The Times-Picayune about Gingrich's faith.

"He was not a member of any church," Pastor Lee wrote in a 1994 letter to The Times-Picayune. "He said that in his study of political theory he noted how much influence the church had had on political theory and asked if I could explain."

After their initial conversation, "We talked often. Newt began coming to church. To make it short, I baptized him (by immersion) into the membership of the St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church.

"He found there a liberal approach to both theology and sociology. . . . Whether our teachings had any effect or not, he was at least exposed to the basic Baptist principle of freedom: personal freedom before God, an open mind before an open Bible, the separation of church and state, and compassion toward other people as sinners saved by the grace of God.

"He also may have learned that we Baptists fuss and fight a lot with each other. It has been suggested by some that in baptizing him, I didn't hold him under long enough."

Update: A Focus on the Family employee emailed me to note that Dobson is not a minister as Matt Bai describes him for The New York Times. Dobson founded a ministry called Focus on the Family.

Congratulations Newt! Welcome to the Universal Church! This is great news.

Posted by: Simone at March 3, 2009

I will pray for your change of heart, that you will repent and come back to God and his promise of eternal life for all who believe in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. According to the Gospel, a man is commanded to rule over his household, and his wife is commanded to submit to her husband, not the other way around. Your failure to obey this command will be costly for you.
In His Name,
David

A hearty warm welcome Mr.Gingrich to our spiritually rich, enduring faith. The loving arms of Catholicism embraces you and all you love wholeheartedly. I've watched you on FOX (Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity) these past years and admired your intelligence and compassionate stance regarding religion. It takes a strong man to make a big step and admit his past was just a bit imperfect at times...but to make a leap into our Catholic faith, and live it daily, is one step closer to Heaven. God bless your past Baptist faith; apparently it gave you wonderful guidance. I simply say "Deo Gratias" Newt; I will offer next Sunday's Mass for you and all you love.

Welcome home to the Holy, Catholic (universal) and Apostolic Church!! Your conversion to the Church founded by our dear Lord fills my heart with joy.

May you grow in love for the Lord and may your relationship with our precious Saviour grow stronger. Remember that when you attend Holy Mass the Lord is present in body and spirit and that if the blinders were removed from your eyes, you would see that you are in Heaven before the throne of God the Father. Make it your mission to attend Holy Mass daily, in the morning. It will change your life and will increase your love for our Lord and will strengthen your relationship with He who gave His life so you could be with Him in paradise.

May the Peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you,

Posted by: TRT at March 4, 2009

His first wife is deceased. I believe his second marriage was a civil ceremony, or else he has gotten one of today's phony annulments.

I would bet he is only trying to please his current wife. So be it.

Posted by: Molly silan at March 4, 2009

In the one Gingrich book that I've read, and a poor effort I remember it being, he seem to have had a strikingly Gnostic understanding of religion.

What was the title? It must have been "To Renew America," as I see on the computer that I have that one. It came out in the mid-Nineties.

Perhaps he had been influenced by Herold Bloom's "The American Religion?"

It's one thing to write for the general public, but I remember feeling that Gingrich was either pandering shamelessly to people who don't much care about intellectual integrity, or that he didn't have much going on to begin with, despite his PhD from Tulane.

But then again, America wasn't his subject area, so perhaps I'm being too harsh.

Posted by: Gregory Peterson at March 4, 2009

Good to have you, Newt. Welcome to the Church started by Christ Himself. You might have to go back to your first wife, that is if it was a valid marriage.

Posted by: Bobby at March 4, 2009

WAY TO GO MR. GINGRICH. NOW WHY DON'T YOU GET TO WORK AND EVANGELIZE RUSH LIMBAUGH, BECAUSE IF HE COULD UNDERSTAND THE WHOLE TRUTH HE WOULD BE EVEN MORE RADICAL

God bless you, Newt! Our Lady is smiling down at you.

Posted by: VR29 at March 4, 2009

Calista Grinrich may have been raised a Catholic, and she might even embrace much of the Chruch's teaching, but given her current situation she cannot be said to be a practicing Catholic. No, I am not judgin anybody, but I think people should understand Church teaching on this situation. They need to reguarlize their marriage (Get married in the chruch) before he can become a Catholic. That would involve an annulment. Again, I am not judging anybody.

The gathering of the people back to Mother Church is picking up steam. I know I won't live to see the day when Protestantism is extinct as Marcionism or Montanism or Albigenisanism, but it will happen. God will manifest Himself and prove that the gates of Hell may seem ascendant for a time, but they will never prevail against His Church. He promised to be with us always, contrary to what Protestants say.

Newt ought to download Humanae Vitae off the Web. It addresses the holocaust of abortions, AIDS, STDs and puts perspective on divorces, homosexual activity. Also promote E.Stanton Evans' book vindicating the vigilance of Joe McCarthy, "Blacklisted by History."
If Catholics had followed Humanae Vitae, I think Reagan would have become Catholic --he wrote ABORTION AND THE CONSCIENCE OF THE NATION - but the media chose to NEVER mention it --even today. "What is truth?" Pontius Pilate asked. The mob consensus wins, and the press fails -especially about Muslim teachings about Jesus "never crucified."

Posted by: Edward L. Peffer at March 4, 2009

It may be difficult to discern the true motives for Mr. Gingrich's conversion to the catholic faith but with so many recent conversions by protestant clergy and academics it is easy to see why so many are being surprised and shocked to discover that the Catholic Church is the fullest expression of christianity.
As a serious student of catholic apologetics, I'd like to offer a few suggestions on getting started. First, stop listening to or reading professional anti-catholics including ex-priests and nuns. They are unwilling and unable to give a truthful representation of catholicism. You must go to the Catholic Church itself to understand the scriptural and historical reasons for becoming catholic. A catholic must show you the scriptures you are ignoring and mis-interpreting and you must start reading the writings of the early church fathers.
Light readers may start with EWTN's (catholic television)"The Journey Home" (Monday, 8pm), or the top-rated "Catholic Answers Live" radio show (especially Tue. and Thurs. 3-5 pm PST) or the best-selling, 3-vol.conversion book series,"Surprised by Truth" (Patrickmadrid.com).
Serious students should consider one or more of the following: 1."Catholicism and Fundamentalism" by Karl Keating, 2."Faith of The Early Fathers, vol.1" by William Jurgens, 3."The Catechism of the Catholic Church", 4.Catholic Answers (catholic.com) and The Coming Home Network International (chnetwork.org).
May God bless you on your journey...

Let's see, is this Newt's third or fourth wife? The Catholic Church had better do a full investigation into his past marriages before they allow him to be married in the Church. From the things I've read, he's the GOP's version of Bill Clinton.

Newt has no real philosophical/religious moorings whatsoever. He will be a Catholic in name only if they let him in.

Just be careful Newt which Catholicism you choose. At the moment it is full of rebellious bishops and priests who have lost their way. Many of these are actually de factos schismatics who have invented a neo-catholicism which advocates teachings that the pre-conciliar church would have shuddered at. Some of them will allow you to take Holy Communion even if you support abortion, actively support sodomy and do what you like in the Sunday liturgy regardless of the rubrics for The Holy Mass.
Indeed, Newt the modern Catholic Church is a veritable hornets nest at present. Be careful!

Dear Mr Gingrich,
I am not even an American but here I am ecstatic that you have found the fullness of faith in the Catholic Church. Here in Sri Lanka where the Assemblies of God and other "born again" denominations gloat over the fact that they have in their fold ex-catholics, it is very refreshing to hear of someone joining the Catholic Church! Many catholics here have been so gullible or should I say weak in their faith that as a result have lost so much of the treasure Christ's offers in the church, namely the Sacraments and especially the Holy Eucharist. I can only survive on daily receiving my Lord. He is there to keep me in check!!
God bless you and God bless America

Newt There is agreat paralell between Catholic doctrine and our Constitution. Year after year renegade forces even with in have tried to reinterpet it according to serve thier own deformed consciences. The same attacks we now see by political leaders who are changing our constitution. The enemy is the same, one enemy the one who hates the truth, the one who delights in immorality, the one who depends on our broken nature for access into our lives. Jesus said he watched Satan fall like lightning, and he took a third of the stars of heaven with him. David (who implies that Newt is condemned to hell for becoming Catholic)

Please get a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and read it. Pray and ask that the Holy Spirit guide you and open your eyes to what Catholics REALLY believe, not just what someone told you that they believe.
The Catholic faith professes that Jesus Christ is indeed Lord, that he died for our sins, and that salvation is a free gift.
God is the final judge of our souls, and Jesus made that very clear.
Please let us faithful and well-informed Catholics (and not misinformed but well-meaning Protestants) define our faith.
We don't try to define yours.

Your comment is sophomoric and ridiculous. I will pray for your conversion as it is YOU who will pay dearly for your attacks on your Christian brothers, sir.

Wow, there's a lot of triumphalist Catholics on this website. One true church and all that. That's a little condescending to all us Protestants don't you think!! I think if we take that idea to it's logical conclusion we should all really be Messianic Jews. If Newt has indeed found his true spiritual home I'm glad for him. I just hope it wasn't to please his current wife. With his track record he may have to change again.

In addition to your past marital record, I sincerely hope you'll be able to reconcile your free-market oriented views with the more middle of the road approach towards economic and social problem solving.

As a Catholic who returned to the Church, I wish you well, but I hope you've really thought this over. It's not for me to hold any judgment of your soul; but I'm very concerned about your ability to not only comprehend Catholic Social Teaching; but also how it works to help raise all workers above undignified situationa. You have a lot of catching up to do in your homework on this matter. And no doubt your track record indicates you'll be needing a lot of time.

MARRIAGE ISSUE: Newt does not need an annulment, he needs the much more easily obtainable decree of lack of form, for each of his prior marriages. Then, assuming all is right with the current marriage (she doesn't have any previous, and they have the marriage blessed), this should be a fairly simple and routine matter to clear the way for his reception into the true faith.

Greetings in Christ-
I didn't know that Christianity Today was a Roman Catholic publication?! If it isn't, I'm shocked at how little any evangelicals have to say about this. (Have we lost one? I am reluctant to think so!) For what it's worth..I've never considered Newt to be a Christian, though he may have professed to be one!? Also, I would say that politically he appears to be socially conservative in many ways and I would respect his position on a number of issues. However, on some key moral issues we would quickly part company as he is un-biblical and liberal, both in practice and in his stated positions.
All that said, I wish him the best and pray that he would at last be given a heart that knows...the Living and True God and Jesus Christ His Son whom He raised from the dead and who will deliver us from the coming wrath.
Father, though we justly deserve your wrath, in your justice remember mercy, for Jesus' name sake..Amen

Newt, here are some suggestions from a Catholic convert of many years: 1) Check out the Traditional Latin Mass offered by traditional Catholic priests. 2) Read the highly respected, scholarly works of English journalist Michael Davies to get a more complete understanding of Vatican II and the changes the Council brought forth in the Church. 3) I especially recommend the chapels, churches and missions of the SSPX--despite what you have probably been hearing. Their priests are validly ordained and completely orthodox. They can also help you sort out the marriage situation according to the true mind of the Church. I think you'll quickly discover that the best "heads" in the Church today are Traditional Catholic "heads". As a new "baby" Catholic you owe it to yourself to, at least, consider my suggestions. God bless.

Welcome, Mr. Gingrich, welcome; truly and lovingly welcome.  I too came home to the Catholic Church well into my 50s from being a life-long Methodist.  Through the grace of God I had perhaps always held "Catholic instincts" and finally was drawn home as so many other prodigals have been.  Beyond "one, holy, catholic, and apostalic" our holy Catholic Church is that which our Lord and Savior founded upon the rock of blessed Saint Peter; accept and live each and every one of her teachings for therein lies the true path and the sole means of eternal salvation.  Take joy in knowing that you have found your way home and all of heaven rejoices.  God bless you and yours always.

For those who are (understandably) concerned about Newt's previous marriages, you cannot be received into the Church until those things have been sorted out - which means they have already gone over his past with him.

For those who are actually OPEN to how the Church handles the annulment process, they look for any impediments to the sacramentality of the marriage. In essence, anything that impeded a covenantal joining of the spouses (esp. anything that would have effectively kept God shut out of the marriage at the point of the joining).

Actual cases of people I know include things like "trying it out" with a plan to divorce it if doesn't work out, or one spouse deliberately sterilizing themselves before the marriage with no intention of ever having children, or one spouse who had withheld serious details about his past from his wife (previous marriages & other children), or one spouse having a previously unknown psychological impairment (personality disorder) affecting their ability to commit to a lifetime relationship.

Yes, there have been abuses to the system, but the magesterium has been working towards cleaning it up and it is very wrong for people with no knowledge of any details whatsoever of Newt's previous marriages to assign evil when the only evidence of it at this point is their own sinfully cynical minds.

I love all Christians and thank God for the common confession of "one Lord, one faith and one baptism" shared by Protestants and Catholics alike. I am shocked by the arrogant assertions posted here that the Roman Catholic Church is somehow purer and more authentic than any other. Secular and sacred history vindicates the Reformation in light of the corruption and excesses of the Roman Church. A little humility is called for here, Catholic friends. Christ is the head of the church and he lives among us Protestants and conveys grace in the Eucharist to us, too! Sorry to disappoint but we are a part of the universal church as well. Best wishes to Newt if he's finally found Jesus as Lord among you. He's behaved very unChritianly in the past. I pray for a quickening of faith among millions of Protestants and Catholics whose faith and trust is not yet found in a life-giving union with Jesus the Christ.

Well, I'm nearly speechless and slightly skeptical (sorry). As a protestant I am greatly offended by the many comments "welcoming Newt to the 'one true church'" - not that the Baptist Church is the "one true church" either, but come on! Show a little decency! This reminds me of the way you all blasted Rod Dreher when he converted from Catholicism to Orthodox. Really unkind. As far as skeptical, I hope that any religious decision anyone makes are genuine; however, a few years back, a Kansas senator (not Bob Dole) converted to Catholicism because he thought being associated with a less extreme group of people would help him in his future run for president (it didn't). So, of course, my first thought when I read this article was, I wonder if Newt is thinking about running for president. And guess what - he's thinking about it, according to today's news. Coincidence?

Posted by: alison at March 6, 2009

If Newt was ever truly 'Saved' grounded in the Word of God, not the spurious 'Traditions' of men, he would never forsake The Lord Jesus Christ to enter Catholicism; for the Jesus of Catholicism IS NOT the Jesus of the Bible, why not?

Catholicism's plan of salvation has Mary at the very center, literally exhalted idolatrously, '...obtain pardon for what we fear, FOR YOU (Mary) ARE THE ONLY HOPE OF SINNERS. We hope to obtain the forgivness of our sins THROUGH YOU, Blessed Lady, in you is our hope of reward." (Saint Agustine (d.430) Dictionary of Mary (catholic Book Publishing Co.: 1997, 1985, p.532) Blasphemy, Idolatry, utterly unscriptural false doctrine. Jesus IS the Only Mediator between God and men on earth.(I Tim. 2:5).

Posted by: Carlos at March 6, 2009

I just need to complete what I stated in my previous post.

Hear the Word of God, not the man-made Traditions of Catholicism.

"And this is eternal life, that you may KNOW (Who?) You, the only true God, and (Who?) Jesus Christ (not a mention of Mary!) whom you have sent..." (John 17:3) "But He (jesus) He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. Therefore, He is also able to (do what?) SAVE (to what extent?) TO THE UTTERMOST those who (first go to Mary,NO!) since He always live to MAKE INTERCESSION for them" (Heb. 7:24) "For through HIM (Jesus) we both HAVE ACCESS (By how many spirits?) ONE SPIRIT, (The Holy Spirit) UNTO THE FATHER." (Eph. 2:18)."For there is ONE MEDIATOR between (who and where?) God (In heaven) and men (0n earth) The Man Christ Jesus." (I Tim. 2:5). "Jesus saith unto him, I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH, and THE LIFE, no man cometh unto the Father but BY ME." (John 14:6) emphasis added. Catholicism Jesus is ANOTHER Jesus, its spirit, is ANOTHER spirit, and its gospel IS ANOTHER gospel. God help Gingrich and those other convets to this utter maze and labrynth of False, erroneous doctrine!

To one of the ladies above, I have never heard a Protestant say that God will not be with us always, Protestants are the ones who say no matter the sin you can be forgiven if you have faith in Jesus not by works, payment of money to the Church, or being in a particular church. Faith is what does it. Anyway, I'm glad to see that Catholics are reading this Evangelical site, I like this site even if I'm not Evangelical. If Newt really has faith in Jesus it doesn't matter what church he's in. Jesus was Jewish and was sent to Earth to turn the Jewish back to God as they had become too immensed in law. And the Catholic Church reached that point too and Luther got all of us including the Catholic Church away from the Church laws back to faith in Jesus Christ only. I looked up at the Cross with Jesus on it one day and realized Jesus is risen, he's off the Cross and in heaven with his Father waiting to take us home. That sudden realization like a flash of light from him led me into Protestantism with thankfullness for the strength of the Catholic Church. Hopefully Newt will truly follow Jesus instead of just saying he does. We all have to make our own trip which by the way is a life long adventure. What's important is that we make the trip.

Mary ann.... Catholic is the one true religion.
I am a recent convert and when I saw that the Catholic faith was founded by Jesus and the protestant religions were founded by some guy a thousand years later as a spin off...., that is all it took for me.

The Roman Catholic Church is the oldest branch of the Christianity religion. The Church’s history spans nearly 2,000 years long, making it a fundamental part of the Christianity as a whole. Jesus of Nazareth founded the Catholic Church.

For instance;
Presbyterian Church
Year Founded - 1560 - Scotland
Founder - John Knox

Methodist Church founded by John Welsey in the 1700's.
A bunch of spin offs from that....

It goes on and on and on.....
The only Jesus founded Church is Catholic.

So... what you get after all the 'take out what you dont want to do' religions... is a watered down version of what Jesus wanted.

See? That is all it took for me.

Jesus did not found the Roman Catholic Church--what a lie. It is disappointing that Mr. Gingrich just exchanged one religion for another. He spoke at our daughter's graduation from Libery Univ. Jerry Falwell would be very disappointed. This is what happens when one mixes politics with religion--false religious moralism and no saving faith in Christ.

I know I will be in Heaven when I die because of Christ's perfect and finished sacrafice for me. The pope plans to visit Israel in May to visit where Jesus prayed for world peace. That is a lie, too. No where in Scripture did Jesus pray for world peace. In fact, in John 17 He states He doesn't pray for the world at all. Wake up before it is too late. Read the Scriptures not the R.C. canon for your beliefs.

Posted by: Susan at March 8, 2009

We will pray that God will convict Newt, through the Holy Spirit, to stay in a church body that respects the Bible. Catholicism has never been "a church" let alone a "true" one. Read the book of Acts, it's in the New Testament. It covers the expansion of the early local churches. There is nothing remotely resembling catholicism in it. (or rest of the New Testament, for that matter)

Posted by: John Spieker at March 8, 2009

Maybe I'm missing something, but it appears that Gingrich is still living in sin, in an adulterous "marriage". Is he even eligible to licitly receive the sacrament of Confirmation until he repents and changes his ways? Or is he "converting" to become a Republican cafeteria Catholic, choosing not to put the indissolubility of marriage on his plate? (Boy, that'll make a powerful ally in the struggle to preserve the traditional family!) Remember, the sacraments can be received to one's own damnation, a point which is emphasized in some of the older liturgies.

There is no sense in talking about the Protestant "church"--at least not for those who believe that the Bible is only authority. If "church" means an entity with spiritual authority, then there is no Protestant church as such. The church, for believing Protestants, is the body of believers. It doesn't matter if you are Baptist or non-denominational or Presbyterian or Catholic--if you believe that Christ died for your sins and through him you are forgiven, you are a part of Christ's church.

I'm very surprised and disappointed by this. I've never understood how an individual could have such fealty to a fallible human being such as the pope. Only God is our father. (And please don't give me that "infallible pope" stuff.) History is replete with examples of popely/priestly foibles.

I have had enormous respect for Newt's talent and intelligence, but I think this is just an example of a man wanting to please his newest wife. I've seen if before.

Posted by: Melody at March 9, 2009

It was never Luther's intent to leave the Catholic faith and certainly not his intent to start new denominations. Was there corruption and excess? Yes, and you can find those in Protestant evangelical and pentecostal churches as well because we're all humans.

When Ted Haggard was found to be living in secret sin, his church didn't throw everything out and start a brand new denomination; the same can be said of all the other pastors who have committed grievous sins. It's interesting that there are similarities in the discipleship movement that Luther himself despised - the complete exercise of too much authority over people's lives (we were involved in this ungodly fellowship for five years), deciding who is righteous by their complete obedience and allegiance to church elders, or who is in sin by those who refused to give up their reasoning; telling members how they should live, what they should and should not do, where to give their money and how much, etc. The abuse of authority in this movement is a corrupting influence on those who are in charge.

Btw, I'm not a Catholic, but a Pentecostal who respects and admires the RCC. We can learn much from our RCC friends and vice versa. We are all the body of Christ.

Speaker Gingrich, I contacted you back in 1975 for assistance in an assignment. You wrote that I was too critical and my unit moving to Patrick AFB needed my expertise and experience. However, before I signed into my unit, a personnel clerk recognized my name when introduced in a Baptist Church, and informed me that the USAF was forcing me to cross train into another career field. Wonder what happened to my needed expertise and experience which the Air Force suggested you write?

I find in God's Word salvation is by repentance and faith alone in Jesus Christ that He paid in full the penalty for our sins, something we ourselves cannot do. The Council of Trent of the Catholic Church condemns any man or woman who claims that they are saved by faith alone in Jesus Christ alone.

The Scriptures in both the Catholic and King James Bible teaches that Salvation comes not by or through a church but only in the Person of Jesus Christ. Catholicism teaches salvation through sacraments and works, contrary to the Scripture. Jesus teaches "Come unto Me (alone)".

You are a very wise man, but wisdom of men is blind. Only the wisdom given by the Spirit of God will cause a man to see and know the Truth.

I boast and brag not of my faith, but I brag and boast of my Lord and Savior, Who gave me the faith to believe in Him. You can believe in Him too, Mr. Gingrich, but not as long as you trust in the sacraments of the Catholic Church. By the way the only Priestly office in the New Testament Church is the Lord Jesus Christ, Himself. The Mediator.

Bobby’s (Allen's) Church, the Roman Catholic Church, is not Christ’s Church. Guard yourself from the snares of the devil and “test the spirits” of men. (1 John 4: 1) Take note of Rome’s love affair with Islam as she forges an alliance with wicked and evil men. Look at her piety and see the guises of the devil: “For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.” (2 Corinthians 11: 14) The beast has an insatiable appetite that’s growing “worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.” (2 Timothy 3: 13) If you have peace with Rome, you better examine your heart, for Jesus did not come to bring peace, but a sword (division); it begins in the home and outward into the world, for His name’s sake. The gospel of Jesus Christ divides.
-----------------

If you join the ranks of those who are now followers of Rome (Tony Blair, Allen Hunt et al.), you will only find misery in the end. If you can't see the guises of this evil in the midst of our society (the Roman Catholic Church), you are indeed blind. Sadly, most are blind - i.e. Baptists, Methodists, etc.- and are going down that wide gate that leads to destruction. (Matthew 7:13) Go, go to her and see what happens to your soul in the end. Take up the fight to build the "Culture of Peace" with Islam and see what happens when you find out that it was all a lie.

1. Peace and security are much needed in our present world marked by many conflicts and a feeling of insecurity.

2. Both Christians and Muslims consider peace a gift from God and, at the same time, the fruit of human endeavor. No true and lasting peace can be achieved without justice and equality among persons and communities.

3. Religious leaders, especially Muslims and Christians, have the duty to promote a culture of peace, each within his respective community, especially through teaching and preaching.

4. A culture of peace should permeate all aspects of life: religious formation, education, interpersonal relations and the arts in their diverse forms. To this end, scholastic books should be revised in order not to contain material which may offend the religious sentiments of other believers, at times through the erroneous presentation of dogmas, morals or history of other religions.

5. The media have a major role and responsibility in the promotion of positive and respectful relations among the faithful of various religions.

6. Recognizing the strong link between peace and human rights, special attention was given to the defense of the dignity of the human person and his/her rights, especially regarding freedom of conscience and of religion.

7. Youth, the future of all religions and of humanity itself, need special care in order to be protected from fanaticism and violence, and to become peace builders for a better world.

8. Mindful of the suffering endured by the peoples of the Middle East due to non-resolved conflicts, the participants, in respect of the competence of the political leaders, ask to make use, through dialogue, of the resources of international law to solve the problems at stake in truth and justice.

Grateful to Almighty God for the abundant fruits of this meeting, the participants agreed to have the next meeting of the Committee in Cairo, from Tuesday, Feb. 23 to Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010.

For those Protestants confused by the amount of Catholoics on the Christianity Today website - you shouldn't be shocked. Protestants are joining the Catholic Church in droves. You owe it to yourself to get informed b/c your Catholic misconceptions do no one any favors, especially yourself.

Here are some solid books:

* Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Catholic - by David Currie (convert whose parents taught at Moody Bible Institute)

* Rome Sweet Home - by Scott Hahn (Presbyterian minister convert to Catholicism - great book - not so inviting title)

*A Biblical Defense of Catholicism - by Dave Armstrong

You also might like to take a look at a couple of great websites:

www.conversiondiary.com

www.firstcomeslove.wordpress.com

www.fisheaters.com/challenge.html (one that offers a solid Catholic challenge to Protestant theology)

I become Catholic this Easter-and I have never seen Jesus worshiped as intensely as within the CC - nor the Pro-life message instilled as strongly - at every Mass.

Again, if you don't get it, read just one of these books (or John 6 a couple of times) & you will!

Posted by: Deanna at March 30, 2009

The question is not whether there are some Catholics who are Christians - there are definitely. As someone who does full-time pro-life work, these are the people I work with almost exclusively.

The question is, is what they believe true?

Is it true that Mary was born sinless?
Is it true that if you don't go to church you could end up missing heaven?
Is it true that you need to eat Jesus to get grace?
etc.

Those aren't small questions. And those are ones that millions of Catholics outside North American are asking and why many of them are becoming Evangelical Christians.

Those like Newt who convert the other way are those whose knowledge of Biblical text is lacking.

As Evangelicals, we've always had the harder job of being able to look to truth, not a man in Rome to tell us how we should live and what we should believe. Does the teachings of the Bible conform with reality or do they not? Is there historical evidence for what we believe or is there not?

The Reformers knew this and taught not that they but that the truth should shape what we believe. Catholics have taught that their tradition should shape what they believe.

If faced with those options, it should really be truth not the opinion of a self proclaimed infallible man who I would listen to.

Besides, isn't Roman Catholic an oxymoron?

Posted by: Canbuhay at March 30, 2009

Hmmm... Newt becoming Catholic? Plenty of Protestants are sincere in such a conversion, nothing wrong with that, but in this case I'm skeptical. Newt was the only Republican at the convention scowling as Palin spoke, and he's got his eyes on the prize, president or vp.
If he's sincere, fine. But this move could just be another strategic maneuver from a moral crusader hypocrite. I say wait and see.

Posted by: Lisa at March 31, 2009

The key doctrines and objectives of the Roman Catholic Church have not changed, despite all the "ecumenical rhetoric" of loving the "separated brethren", of becoming more "liberal", etc. The Roman Catholic Church has never repudiated her "right" to use force wherever and whenever she has the opportunity to do so. She has never repudiated her "right" to use torture. She (at her highest levels) still hates, despite her "ecumenical rhetoric" to the contrary, Jews, Protestants, Orthodox Christians, other non-Catholic Christian independent groups of believers, and even those Roman Catholics who dare to question any of her doctrines or practices!

Posted by: nan at March 31, 2009

He became Catholic early most likely because he is a Baptized Christian, and if you appeal for immediate ability to participate in the sacraments, I believe that a Bishop can grant that, given that you demonstrate knowledge of Catholic beliefs, and promise loyalty to those.

Most RCIA people want the full measure of time to reflect before Becoming Catholic - but even I could have done it sooner.

Also, I suspect, that as a prominent figure, he was getting counseled privately, and wanted to not take any focus away from the celebrants & celebration of Jesus at the Easter Vigil.

It is disturbing to see such derisionof this based on his past marital infidelity. While that is important, and is an issue he will have to address with the people should he seek a political position in the future,it is absolutely not an obstacle to his conversion. The central tenant of Christianity is the forgiveness of sin. Therefore, one can only assume that confession and absolution were a part of his personal conversion process. After all, without the remission of sin through Christ, Christianity is pointless. The Church is the road, not the destination. The destnation is (Comm)Union with Christ. What was true for Augustine is now true for Newt. He is on the right road now. Thanks be to a Generous GOD!

There aren't many protestant denominations I have not researched and prayed about and joined for a season. As a son of a southern Baptist preacher, you may well imagine the reconciling I had to do with my learning of so many years. But truth is truth, and I found it at RCIA. "I will baptize you with clean water, and you shall be clean." Welcome home my political hero !!!
PS just reading other posts here explains once again why there are so many thousands of protestant denominations all claiming to do the work of the one true God.

Posted by: Craig at April 5, 2009

I find it comical when protestants say "we follow only the bible" if that were true then do they keep breaking away from each other. To date there is approximatley 25,000 different protestant denominations. They each teach conflicting and contradictory views and they follow traditions of modern men. Why is Protestantism so fragmented? I guess everyone's individual and contradictory interpretation is equally valid (since it claims to be from the Holy Spirit), and this completely nullifies and denies any existence of unity or sanity in the one Body of Christ and makes a mockery of unity and absolute truth. If private interpretation is the final criterion, who has the right to condemn the Jehovah's Witnesses or the Mormons, who are interpreting the Bible according to THEIR own principles and private judgemen? By necessity, moreover, each must deny that the other has the Holy Spirit guiding them. "If you had the Holy Spirit guiding you to all truth, you would certainly agree with me, since the Holy Spirit led me to this contradictory interpretation." Thus we are brought back to the ultimate question, "What does this Bible verse mean to you?" The famous Baptist preacher Charles Spurgeon once said, "It seems odd that certain men who talk so much of what the Holy Spirit reveals to them think so little of what He has revealed to others." The "Christian" cults have every right to look the Evangelical in the eye and say, "We did not establish independent interpretation of Scripture as the highest authority, YOU did this. Now, on what basis do you say our interpretation is wrong? You have cast aside the tradition of the early Church and rejected the teaching authority and cling to your new innovated doctrine of sola scriptura. You say private interpretaion is the highest principle of the Christian faith and then claim your interpretation is the only correct one. Make up your mind. All they have done is follow your principles out to their logical conclusion." Now I ask a protestant: Where in the Bible does it give its own self attesting canon of scripture. The Answer to this is: NOWHERE. Bishops of the Catholic Church gave us the entire Canon of Scripture in the 4th century. Why do protestants tust them? Or you could always fall back on the old protestant position: "we have a fallible collection of infallible books." Then how do we know that we are still not missing an essential book? If we only count Paul's writings as Scripture as 2 Peter 3:16 calls them "the other scriptures," then what about the other New Testament writings that do not have Paul as their author? Then it seems to me we will have a New Testament grossly unrecognizable to the one that we have today. Are yuo sure that the Letter to the Hebrews belongs in the canon of Scripture, after all the general consensus is that Paul is not the author of it. It is funny that even Martin Luther tried to rewrite the canon of scripture to suit his own needs. If you don't believe me then search history, you will find it to be true. I do not understand how the entire body of Protestantism cannot feel hypocritical with all their contradicing beliefs and traditions. There remains one common thing: all these Protestant churches say they base their beliefs on the same sacred inerrant Bible, yet their beliefs differ in so many ways. How can protestants criticize Rome's interpretation of what she believes the bible says? For example, the Constitution could be read by 50 people, and most likely you will get 50 different interpretations of it. I do not believe that it was Christ's intention to have so many differenet interpretations of the Holy Scriptures, Jesus asked for all of his followers to be ONE! When I read the bible my own "personal" interpretation actually matches Rome's more than it matches the various conflicting protestant interpretations. Nowhere in the bible does it mention sola scriptura or sola fide, either explicitly or implicity, or even through a logical deduction. Protestantism is devoid of any history prior to 1517. It lacks critical thinking logic. I challenge any reader of this post to go out and purchase both the best apologetic books by Protestant authors and by Catholic authors, and then compare the two. That is what I did, and I came to the conlusion that I see the Catholic Church in the New Testament much more than I see the Protestant churches. I then decided to entered into full communion with Jesus Christ's one and only true Church: the Catholic Church. ONLY by the Lord Jesus Christ can one be saved from hell and enter into his glorious kingdom. Praise Jesus Christ forever!!!

And I, who was raised a Catholic, and left at age 19, never really knowing what the Church was all about, then becoming a protestant for 20 years, raising my family in a protestant faith, and then left because I searched the truth, and was not finding it there. My search for truth led me right back to the Catholic Church, and ANYONE can discover this if they will only SERIOUSLY read the history of the First Fathers of the Church! It was really so easy! The protestant blogs here, I will pray for all of you, you are filled with misleading anti-Catholic mumbo-jumbo. I DARE you to search honestly and openly, The Catholic Church is where you will end up! I have been there, and done that, and now I am so utterly happy in my faith. I want to share it with the world. So Newt,
If you were truly a follower of Jesus Christ, there's no way you could even think about becoming a Catholic. I've always been a fan here in Georgia, but I really question your motives for converting to Catholicism. Again, if you truly understood the Bible at its roots, you would have never converted. I truly am sad and sorry. You should spend some time researching the history of the Catholic church as you have researched for the books you have written. I believe you would be reverting back to your real home of Christianity.

Dear ANTI-CATHOLIC visitors to this site,

The Rev. Billy Graham once called Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen (1895-1979) the greatest preacher of the twentieth century. The Emmy Award winning televangelist (1951-57,1961-68) Sheen is a candidate to become the first American-born male to be canonized a saint. He once wrote the following:
There are not over a hundred people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church - which is, of course, quite a different thing. These millions can hardly be blamed for hating Catholics because Catholics "adore statues"; because they say "indulgence is a permission to commit sin"; because the Pope "is a Facist"; because "the Church is a defender of Capitalism." If the church taught or believed anyone of these things it should be hated, but the fact is that the Church does not teach nor believe any one of them. It follows then that the hatred of the millions is directed against error and not against truth. As a matter of fact, if we Catholics believed all of the untruths and lies which were said against the Church, we probably would hate the Church a thousand times more than they do...
Too many non-Catholic christians have swallowed the poison of professional anti-Catholics like former christians have the poison of Dan Brown's "Da Vinci Code". The best antidote is prayer, repentance and a generous dose of Catholic apologetics. The #1 lay-run organization for apologetics and evangelisation in America is Catholic Answers @ www.catholic.com. May God bless you on your journey.

It is a Church made up of Sinners and Saints undergoing Struggles of Faith, Sin and repentance and conversion in Life.
Hoping, you like us will nurture this Faith that God gave you freely.
For us, who know the Canonical bible only came about by the 5th Century ( Council of Carthage etc), we rely on the teaching authority of the Church for our guidance just like the early Christians did from the 1st to the 5th Century. There was then for 400 years NO Bible in existence, that is now so heavily relied upon by our Protestant brothers ( Sola Scriptura) Just like them, we rely on the Church as our teacher and logically as well, we rely on the Bible.

I suppose that Newt has been forgiven by the Catholic Church for breaking the sixth commandment since he married his object of adultery. (For the second time no less!) His first wife was his tenth grade geometry teacher at Baker High School in Columbus, Georgia. When she moved to Atlanta Newt went to Emory to be with her and married her after graduation. He dumped her, while she was dying of cancer, in order to marry his second wife. By his own admission he was having an affair for six years with this latest wife.

The Catholic Church is welcome to Newt. We secularists want no part of him. Just watch him around the women in your congregations.

Posted by: David Hume at May 9, 2009

Well, I've always liked Newt, but apparently he wasn't too deep in the Word of God and his wife must not be much of a Catholic in the first place if they went against it and chose to be unequally yoked, much less their involvement in adultry. I guess their lustfullness overshadowed their "righteousness". Read up on Solomon and see how his lust led him to love many strange women and lured him away to worship "strange gods" and find out what happened to him.

Although I'm not secular, I'd like to comment on the post by David Hume about watching him around the women in the congregations - Don't worry, the women in the congregation won't even notice Newt because their too busy keeping an eye on their children to protect them from the priests! I know that's not a Christian thing to say, but the arrogance of Catholics is not Christian either. Remember what God says about PRIDE, people.

I will give Newt a little credit. He is a very intellectual man and the more he gets "Catechized" he'll figure it out in no time! THEN, when he sees the real TRUTH, God can use him to bring His children to Christ. We just need to pray and stand in the gap for him and his wife.

Posted by: Robert Taylor at May 13, 2009

My comments about watching Newt around women during mass was of course a joke. However, what is interesting here is to see how Christians vilify each other in these posts with many asserting that their particular variation is the only true version of the religion and the others are wretchedly wrong "false doctrines." It is especially interesting to see Protestants here quote the Bible against Catholics without seeming to know that it was the Catholic Church which assembled the testaments back in the fourth century...the very texts which they rely upon in their disparagement.

The earliest philosophical critic of Christianity was the Greek Celsus who noted in the second century that some Christians say this and some say that and "...they utterly detest each other constantly with the vilest forms of abuse, and cannot come to any sort of agreement in the teaching...Like so many sirens they chatter away endlessly and beat their breasts....They all together have the slogan 'believe and be saved, or damn you...'which path are they to follow, since advice of the same sort is coming from all quarters? Are the ones who crave salvation to throw dice in order to find out where they should turn?"

Well, as one can say of religions in general, they can't all be true but they can all be false. And indeed they are.

Posted by: David Hume at June 2, 2009

From this Heathen's perspective, one Christian sect is very like another, arrogance and all. I'm very happy to be through with all of them. Christianity is the worst thing that ever happened to Western civilization. Freedom and democracy can only exist when religions are no longer able to co-opt the coercive power of the State to try to micro-manage people's lives. All over the civilized world, people are finally waking up to the fact that things were for the most part better under Paganism. We don't have human sacrifice any more. You'll find that in Christian beliefs on the Eucharist. We don't try to get hold of your money or get you to behave in self-destructive, non-sensical ways. You can trust us around your kids. We won't molest them, or even try to brainwash them. We'll even tell you to think for yourself and that groveling and going on about one's "sins" is just plain nutty. Poor Jesus! Posted by: Jordsvin at June 23, 2009

Uh, Newt? Did you ever read where the Apostle Paul had to deal with many problems in the Corinthian church and he told them that while he was among them he was going to be concerned about nothing but Christ crucified? Do you know, Newt, who that was that died once for all time and all that was accomplished in that one time event when the most literal blood and body of God the Son was on that altar of the cross once for all time? Just like Paul clearly and specifically says?

But that is how sufficient the blood and body in the death of the infinite Son of God truly was. It covered all sins of humanity from Adam up to that time, around that time, and right up to today and until He returns. It can most certainly be that sufficient just once and for all time, because only God could do such a thing. That, and that alone, is to be the object of our faith: Christ crucified and risen, once, for all time. Then God sees that our hearts are truly trusting in what was the most important and costly event to Him, once and for all time.

This is the truth of the Good News, Gospel, that must be embrace by all for the gift of eternal life, just like John 3:16 and so many other verses say that we can read for ourselves with the help of the Holy Spirit and teachers God gives the Church, the Body of Christ all around the world, who handle the Word accurately or rightly divide it.

Please, know Jesus according to His words alone, and none of religiously fanciful men no matter how sincere they may appear in ritual and moving surroundings.

We'll even tell you to think for yourself and that groveling and going on about one's "sins" is just plain nutty. -- Posted by: Jordsvin at June 23, 2009

As I say, the Devil says that, too.

Poor Jesus! He must be spinning in his grave... -- Posted by: Jordsvin at June 23, 2009

Ever since He was Resurrected, He hasn't been in His grave. His tomb is still empty.

... at the abominations committed in his name. -- Posted by: Jordsvin at June 23, 2009

I agree that those who choose to claim that they are homosexual AND claim that they are Christian commit an abomination in His Name. After all, God has condemned what we now call "homosexuality" as an "abomination."

If you want to follow Jesus, convert to Judaism. -- Posted by: Jordsvin at June 23, 2009

Since when do Jews believe in Jesus? Messianic Jews do. Which others?

My name is Edward Ferrer, and I am an ex-Catholic! Mr. Speaker, I always ahd respect
for you, and BTW, when I lived in Jonesboro,
Ga., you were my Congressman. I am a staunch
Conservaive, like you are, as I understand.
However my love for God and people (which I am acquiring, thanks to my Lord and Redeemer,
Jesus/Yeshua!), can't in all conscience extend to the Roman Church. My prayers are
with you on your choice, which I respect, albeit reluctantly. Since you chose to enter
this church, there is nothing I cna do personally about that.

I pray that the Holy
Spirit (and not the spirit of this world).
will show you the TRUTH! Whenever I do some-
thing that I'm not suppose to do (for which
I have to confess to Him, every time) He is
there to guide and to make sure that I don't
deviate from Him. And He always gets His Way!
I am very grateful to Him, PTL! The Holy Spirit CAN convict you,and I pray that He will do it for your SAKE, as well! He is NO
respecter of persons. and you can be sure of
that!

Mr.Gingrich, the future DOES NOT belong
to Rome. It belongs to Jesus Christ, The Messiah, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, and
Prince of Peace! He will take His Bride, The
Church, HOME, to His Father's House, and He
will LITERALLY rule the World. I'm waiting on
Him! Blessings and MARANATHA!!
