Obama to Call Faith Leaders on Health Care

Sarah Pulliam Bailey

President Obama has accepted an invitation to speak during a public call-in about health care reform on August 19. The call will be open to the public, streamed live, and include a coalition of religious groups ranging from Sojourners to Faith in Public Life to the National Baptist Convention. More details will be released this afternoon.

The coalition released the “40 Days for Health Reform” initiative this morning, including a national TV ad featuring Christians arguing for healthcare reform, prayer events, meetings with members of Congress, and a nationwide health care sermon weekend on August 28-30.

Interesting, isn't it, that liberals are opposed to churches talking politics from the pulpit unless the politics being spoken forwards their agenda. Where is the Rev. Barry Lynn?

Posted by: Paul Edwards at August 10, 2009

Lynn will complain about this too. He is fairly equal opportunity complainer.

EXCUSE ME. I've been wondering where our religious "leaders" have been during the "debate" on the immoral House bills for Deathcare. Now I know: they are helping Obama push unlimited, tax-payer funded abortions -- with no conscience-clause for MD's and nurses who don't want to kill babies in the womb -- as well as MANDATORY end-of-life "counseling" for us seniors. What next? Sending around our "pastors" to urge us to "let go" of life? Disgusting.

OBAMA NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING HE SEEMS TO HAVE NEVER DONE.READ THE BIBLE. I KNOW HE HASNT HEARD THE BIBLE DUE TO THE SO CALLED CHURCH HE ATTENED. HE HAS LIED MORE THAN ALL THE OTHER PRESIDENTS PUT TOGETHER. HE NEEDS TO GO BACK TO WHATEVER COUNTRY HE WAS BORN IN AND RULE THEM LIKE HITLER.

Posted by: L.SCALF at August 10, 2009

Whoa...I sense a lot of...umm...hatred here. To start, the funding of abortions is a big issue being discussed. Thankfully, it's not in the bill they are discussing. See http://factcheck.org/2009/07/surgery-for-seniors-vs-abortions/ - a non-partisan website that publishes the truth and facts in the current debate. Nor are there "death panels". I believe that one started (where the elderly were going to be put to early death) because of a provision that encourages something called a 'living will'. I have one of those and am very glad that I do. So are all medical staff in our current health care environment. And right now? Health care costs are rising and we have millions and millions of people uninsured. Businesses that usually provide health care are cutting back the offerings because of costs. Seriously...if you could be assured that (1) the bill does not pay for abortions; (2) that there's no rampant plan to 'kill of grandma' and (3) the bill would help reduce health cost, would you support it? As a Christian...would you support it?

Some of you people are just stupid. A plain waste of space.

Listen up L.Scalf - you are a perfect reason why abortion should be allowed!

Posted by: Tristan at August 10, 2009

The chief reason I am opposed is that this is basically a government run plan. Social Security and Medicare are both virtually bankrupt because Congress kept meddling with the programs and adding more "benefits" or "entitlements." I want no plan that Congress can continue to meddle with.
A second major reason is the incredible cost - I refuse to be a party to loading my great grandchildren with overbearing debt.

Posted by: Roger Fleming at August 10, 2009

For L. Scalf: please check your sources, the Annenberg Foundation has suspicious links to ACORN, the Chicago Annenberg Project, Bill Ayers, and Obama. So of course it's subsidiary Factcheck will defend abortion. Health care costs are rising because we have better health options now, and because the unbridled legal system forces unreasonable settlements and superfluous defensive testing by physicians. A Blue Cross analysis 4 years ago estimated 9-12 million uninsured, not the 50 million quoted. The world's best health system needs tweaks, starting with Tort reform - why no word of that in the proposed legislation?
The real issue here is liberty vs more (inept) gov't intrusion.

Dan, last time I checked, christians were a bunch of adulterous, whoremongering, muderous, lying, hypocritical, cheating, judgemental, racist, bigoted bastards. There actually is no difference anymore between a christian and a non christian.

So to answer your question I'm exactly the same as any christian.

My heart breaks with what I am reading in these blogs, mainly because most (not all) of what Tristan is saying is right. We have been a people of hypocrisy. It is being revealed more and more through politics and daily living. Depending on who's doing it and what the cause is, we will accept, excuse or not accept certain things. I know God didn't bless the owner of ChristianityToday to be a tool to stir up division, complaints, anger and bitterness towards others just to get hits on the internet. I pray not. This is a Christian magazine and blog that should be opened to ALL PEOPLE (especially UNSAVED) to read and express their opinions or concerns regardless of what they are. The action of any unsaved person (I don't know if Tristan is or isn't since she is right about everyone's behavior being similiar to hers on this blog) makes sense to me, but the REACTION of professed Christians (Christlike; made in the image of God) does not!! I have a feeling Jesus will say to alot of us professing to know Him, "get away from me, I NEVER KNEW YOU." Tristan I feel the need to apologize to you. I don't know why yet, but I do! Alot of what you said made my spirit go "ouch". Much of what you said is true and I feel ashamed at that! Like the rest of us, you have a right to your express opinions. I think Jesus would allow you to! I know that God loves YOU, NO LESS than He loves me. He is not bias in His love, but at the same time, there are special benefits to knowing Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Eternal Life! I don't know what your spiritual beliefs are, I can only assume certain things from what you said in your blog. But I do know that Jesus will return one day and we all must be ready. We cannot based our decision to receive Him on the actions or reactions of others. We have been giving FREE WILL and choice to know Him for ourselves. If not already, I pray one day that choice will be yours. I thank God for the conviction brought to me through you! I ask forgiveness from God and apologize to you that I have not always walked in UNCONDITIONAL love with people who don't see things as I do or who are simply DIFFERENT! I was just thinking the other day after seeing the news (which is becoming more and more discouraging with angry townhalls, tea parties and so much more regardless of your race). I said, "Lord are we really being CHRISTLIKE. Are we really practicing LOVE the way Jesus would no matter what the situation, circumstance or persons. I DON'T THINK SO GOD. Everything about Jesus Christ was SELF-SACRIFICAL. Forgive us God that we are and have been a spoiled, greedy, blameful, and selfish nation for a long time. Not all, but many. Now that the rubber has met the road, we as Christians REACT with hatred, anger, bitterness, complaining, division and especially FEAR towards one another whether saved or unsaved. We can't trust our gov't no matter what side of the spectrum. We can't trust each other. Just anger, complaining and discontent everywhere! Everybody's right and nobody is wrong! Everybody is the blame and no one is responsible nor accountable. It's funny we talk about being people of FAITH Lord, but not an once of it has been shown. Even you Lord are being used at our convenience. We pick out scriptures that fit our needs, wants and purposes." When will we get it God that none of this is about us, but about YOU and that awful spirit named Satan who wants to be make everything bad that you made good! He seeks to divide, kill and destroy this nation, especially your church! We are in a critical moment right now. The best opportunity in a long time since 911 and Katrina to share the GOOD NEWS that Jesus Christ is Lord and the lifeline to eternal life"! Then I repented for being some of the things I just described. Ladies and gentlemen I didn't vote for Pres. Obama. I had my reasons that were totally legitmate as to why I didn't (I would not have voted for Palin either and still won't at this time), but by no means do I disrepect him in any way any more than I did Pres. Bush whom I certainly didn't agree with alot of what he did either. I pray FOR this PresidentI like I've never prayed before! I don't think he is a bad person, just misguided on some things. He is NOT an access of evil as portrayed in the CHRISTIAN community! I simply pray for a DIVINE VISITATION! I am not telling God what to do with him (God already knows THE PURPOSE), but that he has a divine visitation from God that will be between him and God!! I do believe he is a Christian man. As you can see in these blogs, you can be a Christian but act unrighteously! I have many concerns about this health care bill and abortion ISN'T the ONLY issue. There are many pro-lifers who partake in NOTHING concerning CHILDREN in America today(adoption, foster care and other programs). It's just WORDS for a cause or smoke screen motives! I recently saw a tv special where America is growing in child/teen-sex slavery and pornography!! I was stunned! In my heart I believe if THE CHURCH did what they are suppose to be doing, we would not be SEGREGATED, AFRAID of a socialist gov't, homosexuals, or others that are simply DIFFERENT. Teach/preach Christ, love forgiveness and servitude (looking beyond ourselves)! Keep the people focused on JESUS CHRIST instead of Obamamania, homosexuals, abortions! We have made the ISSUES the focus instead of GOD!! Seek His kingdom first and all else will fall into place!! Remember, these are BIBLICAL happenings in the world today! Many of these things are SUPPOSE to be happening!! Our only fear should of God! I don't like politics. Everything seems to glorify the "person" and bring no glory to God. Everyone wants to be in the spotlight. When you turn on the news it's always the same people time and time again! But you know, I WILL NOT worry! I do as I promised God and simply just TRUST GOD!! I won't put my trust in the republicans, democrats, economist, healthcare reform/providers, banks, etc etc because MANY WILL LIE to further their agenda! you just don't know who's telling the truth anymore!I go on with my day, serving God however I can through my testimony, acknowledging Him, helping people as best I can and that's it!! Because I know I do have a PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE that goes wayyyyyyyyy beyond MYSELF in thinking about what I have or what I don't have!! We can have all the changes we want for better or worst, but if OUR HEARTS aren't what's changed, then the rest if for naught!! Many blessings to everyone! I pray the holy spirit of PEACE and REAL FAITH will overwhelm you!!

Susan F, above, seems the only voice here addressing the subject, and doing so accurately.

My blog had nothing to do with feeling sympathy for Tristan. If God can save my soul, I know all is not lost with Tristan. She will be a great advocate for Christ one day! I was sincere in saying God convicted my heart through her because she was right in most of what she said. There IS alot of hypocrisy in the Christian community and to a degree I was one of them. Therefore, I did what entered my spirit concerning the blog (or book!). I will keep us all in prayer because WE ALL need it for such a time as this. Blessings. Have a great and safe weekend everyone! Everything God made is STILL GOOD!

Is the moral fiber of the Democratic party keeping in line with the Bible, and the example Jesus set for us? We can only pray for our leaders and fight any movement that contradicts the Word.

@greg,

greg i'm curious- is the moral fiber of the republican party in keeping in line with the bible and the example Jesus set for us?

Posted by: Justin at August 15, 2009

No one seemed to address the utter cruelty stated by Susan F. Are you a Christian? How could you insult someone so deeply by saying that he should have been aborted? I am so disgusted by the lack of love that is reflected on this blog. Even when we disagree strongly about political policies, we should at least treat each other decently.
