Evangelicals Push `Theology of Sex,' Abortion Reduction

The National Association of Evangelicals on May 20 launched an initiative to reduce abortions by promoting a "Theology of Sex" for churches and pledging to find common ground with opponents on abortion.

"There's a sense that, whatever our laws are, abortion is a problem because of the underlying issues of how we treat sex," said Galen Carey, director of government affairs for the Washington-based umbrella organization.

NAE leaders have concluded that churches are not doing a "good job" of teaching about sex and marriage and should better address the high percentage of cohabiting unmarried young adults, including many evangelicals.

"Addressing that subject will do a lot, we think, to reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies and the number of abortions," Carey said.

A Gallup poll commissioned by the NAE found that 90 percent of evangelicals consider "hormonal contraceptives" to be morally acceptable, and three-quarters consider abortion and unmarried sex to be morally wrong. Less than a third -- 30 percent -- think national religious leaders are doing a good or very good job at addressing the issue of abortion.

NAE officials have planned nationwide forums to promote dialogue about abortion reduction. Carey hopes they will include academics, counselors, teachers and representatives of pregnancy resource centers.

"These conversations should build on our shared concerns for human dignity, protecting children and promoting healthy families and communities," the NAE said in a resolution.

Its new 24-page "Theology of Sex" booklet declares "Yes, sex is good!" within the context of heterosexual marriage and says that "God is forming a new life in his image" in both planned and unplanned pregnancies.

"Sex is a responsible act only in a relationship in which the couple is willing to care for any children that can come from that union," it states.

It's great to hear that the NAE is doing something outside of the box in order to try to reduce abortions. A more holistic approach by the pro-life community will go a long way towards reducing abortions and showing love to mothers.

Excellent initiative! The more education people can get on this issue, the better.

I clicked on the link and read the booklet. Sorry but it leaves a lot to be desired. As Christians we need to be firm and know the facts about the problems facing our society and church. Living with someone before you get married is the worst thing any person or Christian can do. No other factor is greater in predicting a divorce for a couple than if they lived together before they got married. There have been studies done by universities in the USA, in Europe and just a few years ago in New Zealand, and every one showed a much higher divorce rate for those who lived together before marriage. Some times more than double! According to the US department of Justice a woman is 9 times more likely to be murdered by a man she is living with than a husband. In the 1990's Duke University did a study on IQ and attitudes. The lower you go in IQ the more a person said they would consider living with someone before marriage. So warn your children that if they would live with someone before they get married they may wind up married to a moron!

The "opponents" that the NAE wants to find common ground with--the Planned Parenthood, NOW folks and pro-abortion Democrats--think that the best way to stop abortion is to get more unmarried women on the pill.

Is this really something Christians want to be party to?

Are you seriously considering negotiating with abortionist to reduce abortions? Can we get common sense. If these people wanted to decrease the number of abortions they would be willing to teach abstinence. Abortionist don't negotiate! They are baby killers. They do not try to find other ways to save that unborn babies life why would you think they would be willing to negotiate less abortions. Try something and see if it works; give me a break. We will not stand for abortions no matter how much you don't know about sex and God's original intent for sex. This is no excuse to destroy an unborn child. We do not negotiate with murderers, read your bible people. God will not honor you efforts because they are against the will of God. He protects the life of the innocent; it is non-negotiable.

Why would the goal for the NAE be to "reduce abortions?"
Does that mean if there are 1million abortions a year that the NAE is okay with 500,000 per year?
That doesn't make sense.
If abortions are the killing of innocent people, then the goal should be for zero abortions a year, and 1million adoptions or otherlife saving alternatives.

Let's be clear about something: our theology on this might have flaws. A full 50% of pregnancies end in miscarriages, often so early that the woman never even knew she was pregnant. Probably 3/4 of the women reading this article were pregnant at one time and didn't know it. Did your 9-day-old fetuses that failed to attach to your uterine walls have souls? Did they go to Heaven because they were before the "age of accountability?" Should you all grieve and wrack yourselves with grief over embryos that didn't make it? The idea that embryos have souls is highly speculative at best, and we need the humility to recognize that before we sit down and talk to all those evil "liberal baby killers."

"I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb."
-Jeremiah 1:5

Any questions, Xino?

You know. You should really research more about abortion. I could go on for a while about this, but unfortunately, I'm a little busy at the moment. I will say that the heart of an unborn child begins to beat at 5 weeks. Can you say that this child is still not a living being?

The heart starts beating much sooner really. At 18 days [when the mother is only four days late for her first menstrual period], and by 21 days it is pumping, through a closed circulatory system, blood whose type is different from that of the mother. It can be heard at 3-4 weeks with ultrasound.

Psalm 139
13 For you created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb.

14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

Thanks Barbara. Excellent info.

The problem with abortion and premarital sex is sin. If talking about sex more was the cure, we'd have no premarital sex among supposed believers.

"Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God." (I CORINTHIANS 6:9-11). When pastors begin preaching the pure gospel instead of copying Planned Parenthood, we'll see true revival and reformation. Until then, expect more of the same.
