FRC's Tony Perkins Downplays Straw Poll After Ron Paul's Victory

This weekend's Values Voters Summit brought together GOP presidential hopefuls with social conservatives, also featuring a presidential straw poll.

Going into the weekend, the straw poll was expected to be a harbinger of which candidates conservative Christian activists were backing. The winner, however, was not Herman Cain, Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry, or Rick Santorum. Instead, libertarian-leaning Ron Paul was this year's surprise winner with 37 percent of the 1,983 votes. (Read Christianity Today’s interview with Ron Paul.)

Family Research Council (FRC) president Tony Perkins dismissed the results as ballot stuffing. At a press conference following the vote, Perkins said that 600 people registered Saturday, stayed for Ron Paul's speech, voted, and then left. Ron Paul received 732 votes. “You do the math,” Perkins said.

Straw polls are rarely representative of voters; they measure campaign's ability to organize. To register for the conference, each participant needed to pay $99. Other campaigns would have also mobilized voters to the confab.

Perkins cautioned reading too much into the results. "Let me just take you back four years to this event, when we had a straw poll. Mitt Romney won that straw poll,” he said.

Perkins was not always so down on the VVS straw poll. Just a few days earlier, Perkins touted the poll as an important test of candidate strength in a Washington Times op-ed. He did not cite the winner—Romney--but the “strong finish” by Mike Huckabee.

"The Values Voter Summit will test each candidate's ability to motivate its base to get out and cast a vote in the summit's straw poll,” Perkins said. “In 2007, Gov. Mike Huckabee's strong finish at the straw poll helped push him into the top tier of candidates right before a big win at the Iowa caucuses."

Texas Rep. Paul has been reaching out to social conservatives, though many Christian conservative activists consider him part of the libertarian wings of conservatism. When the FRC toured Iowa this summer, Paul was one of the few candidates to not participate in their events. Last year, he was one of only two re-elected GOP congressmen to vote for the elimination of “Don't Ask Don't Tell.”

“Most of the GOP candidates are tracking with social conservative issues,” Perkins told Politico in June. “I think Ron Paul is the only one with a libertarian bent. Most are sympathetic to and understand of those issues." In August, he said that all the Republican candidates were acceptable to politically conservative evangelicals. Paul, said Perkins, must reach out to social conservatives in order to win.

Cain (24 percent) and Santorum (16 percent) came in second and third, respectively. Bachmann and Perry were further behind, tying with 8 percent of the vote. Values Voters Summit voters appeared more interested in Bachmann as a VP candidate. Ron Paul, Bachmann, Cain, and Marco Rubio each received about 10 percent of the vice presidential straw poll.

Tony Perkins needs prayer. His behavior in this matter is not the behavior of a Christan leader.

Ron Paul is an honest and God-fearing candidate.

“How dare those pesky Paul kids out organize every other campaign! Get off my lawn!”

Tony Perkins sounds a wee bit vindictive.

Contrary to what Perkins alleges, you could not just attend Paul’s speech, you had to register for the conference. There were electronic voting machines, not ballot boxes and you had to be registered to cast a ballot. Hat’s off to the Value Voters Summit for not stealing the vote when they could have.

For a long time in the GOP and among Democrats, straw polls were considered a great show of a campaign’s organizational strength, and they were also regarded as a measure of a campaign’s momentum toward victory on election day. Some conservative political organizations used to even teach conservative activists how to organize and win straw polls.

However, when Paul starts to win them, suddenly they’re meaningless. They are so “meaningless” that the Texas GOP had to cancel its straw poll out of fear that Ron Paul would secure an easy straw poll victory over weak incumbent Governor Rick Perry.

Wait for the next election cycle when Paul is not running; what is left of the vintage media will consider straw polls important again.

Perry tried to force little girls to inject the untested HPV vaccine for campaign contributions. Herman Cain is an ex-Fed Chair, he’ll never eliminate the Fed (and his 9%+9%+9% plan = 27% tax rate as bad as Libs). Mitt equates corporations to people, killing his general election chances. Ron Paul is the only candidate that will end all the wars. Both Republicans and Democrats support endless Wars for Israel, it all started nearly a decade ago under a false flag attack.

"and Marco Rubio each received about 10 percent of the vice presidential straw poll."

Rubio shouldn't even be LISTED in a VP straw poll. He is not a natural born citizen and is NOT eligible to be VP or POTUS. If he is the conservative patriot he purports to be, he could be of great assistance to us.

Marco Rubio’s parents were NOT U.S. citizens therefore he is NOT eligible to be POTUS or VEEP. If he is a true patriot and supporter of the Constitution, he will immediately call a press conference and announce that he is not a ‘natural born citizen’ because his parents were not U.S. citizens and that he cannot accept any invitation to join a presidential ticket. For more eligibility info, see: http://naturalborncitizen.wordpress.com/2011/06/24/minor-v-happersett-is-binding-precedent-as-to-the-constitutional-definition-of-a-natural-born-citizen/.

Help me make that happen. Go to http://rubio.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/contact Tell Rubio that you expect him to do the right thing so that we can both fix the constitutional crisis we currently face and forever prevent another from occurring. This problem should have been resolved following Chester A. Arthur’s administration when it was discovered that his father was not a U.S. citizen when Chester was born – but it wasn’t. Let's finally put this question to rest.

If Rubio will stand tall and make that announcement, it would immediately shine a spotlight on Barry's ineligibility and force the SCOTUS/Congress to act. Help me make that happen! It will only take a couple minutes - please do it now!

After reading these posts, I will be embarrassed to admit to ever reading this blog.

I will only challenge one item posted, however. Allen, can you explain Cain's 9-9-9 tax plan? Can you explain how it adds up to 27%.

"can you explain Cain's 9-9-9 tax plan? "

Cain's 9-9-9 plan is unconstitutional. In order to implement it, an amendment would be required unless, of course and as I fear, they simply ignore the Constitution and implement it without proper legal authority as they have done the current tax abomination.

It is always funny when someone does something (like take a straw poll) and then says that it does not mean anything.

I know that Ron Paul is God's Choice for president of this nation. I know through prayer and meditation and the Holy Spirit that Ron Paul is the best candidate to reverse the very serious evil forces that are destroying America. The top priority of our day is the overthrowing of the international bankster-gangsters (aka the "power-elite", the Federal Reserve bank, the IRS, the "crime bosses", the "insiders", the "good old boys", the global organized crime syndicate, the secret servants of Satan, the Kingdom of Satan). Ron Paul is the most sincere, humble, virtuous, wise, honest leader that I have seen come forth in our time. Ron Paul knows what must be done and has the courage and the Divine Protection and Divine Direction to do what must be done.
Herman Cain, by the way, is a former employee of the Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve is America's most despicable, abominable, criminal, unconstitutional, illegal and deadly enemy, and along with the IRS, the economic DICTATORSHIPS, PLUNDERERS AND DESTROYERS OF AMERICA.

Ron Paul is the only candidate not in hock to the babylonian-pharisee-zionist-warmaking-bankster-anti-Christian elite. Those who reject him support these satanic forces. The Edomites, a nation utterly condemned by the major writing prophets, ‘became Jews’ just over a century before the birth of Christ. According to Josephus the historian who lived just after the time of Christ, 'They (Edom) were hereafter no other than Jews' (Josephus Antiquities, XIII ix 1; XV vii 9). Yahweh the God of Israel, ‘hated Esau (Edom)’, a people ‘against whom he has indignation forever’ (Mal 1:2-4). At the time of Christ the word 'Jew' had almost become synonymous with these evil people. Jesus said to the Jews ‘Because you are not sheep of my flock you do not believe’ (John 10:24-27).

Too many church sheeple have been misled by the forces of evil - they fell into the blessed-be-the-warmakers GW Bush trap which has almost destroyed America but they will hopefully wake up before it is too late.

Isn't VOTING another word for ballot stuffing? What are they going to say when Ron Paul wins a whole state? And what about when he wins the presidency? Are they going to continue to be shocked that the people don't want bailouts and nonstop wars? Why do you think we ARE voting for Ron Paul? We want things to really change!

We have one way to fight the continuing blackout of Ron Paul....we are all going to donate so much on Oct. 19th it will make the media's head swim! It is called a moneybomb and we all donate directly to the campaign on one day and rock the establishment! Please go to http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=181997088537471 or www .blackthisout.com....Spread the word and we dare them to BLACK THIS OUT!!

Ron Paul is the most honorable and yes - Christian. The way I know that is by his record, his humble servant perserverenace, his quiet demeanor and wisdom. He is not your cookie cutter christian that says all easy going things - and I bet he aint scared to discuss Revelations! Some of these new aged - Christians have no understanding.... they lack wisdom, but if you lack wisdom and ask for it, He is righteous to give! GO RON PAUL! a Georgia Christian that does not wear a WWJD bracelet, does not have a fish on my car - or any other graven image! Praise God, and I just re-registered after a 20year sabatical in the desert.... so I can vote for a GOOD RIGHTEOUS MAN - Dr. Ron Paul~ !!

Rather than demonizing his own poll results, Tony Perkins should ask why so many evangelicals are supporting Ron Paul (who is a fellow evangelical).

There are a lot of Christians who would rather have an extremely limited government that errs on the side of liberty, than a big government that raises their children.

It is time for us Christians to realize that salvation does not come from government. No matter how much control a government exercises on its people, it can not force them into heaven. Only with a heart change can real reforms come to society.

Ron Paul gets the idea that a change in society only happens when people change in their hearts. It does not come from a government edict.
