Obama Warns of 'Too Much Loose Talk of War' between Israel and Iran

Poll suggests evangelicals want U.S. to support Israel in the event of an attack.

President Obama met Monday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this morning to discuss growing concern over Iran's nuclear weapons program. With increasing talk of a possible Israeli military strike against Iran's nuclear capabilities, U.S. leaders caution against a premature military strike.

"The United States will always have Israel's back when it comes to Israel's security," Obama said as Netanyahu nodded.

Speaking at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) Sunday, Obama said it was time to follow Theodore Roosevelt's axiom to “speak softly but carry a big stick.”

A slim majority of Americans said that the U.S. should remain neutral if Israel attacks Iran, according to a February poll conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press. Forty percent voiced support for Israel, while only 5 percent of suggested the U.S. should oppose military action.

Among evangelicals, nearly two-thirds said the U.S. should support Israel if it attacked Iran. Evangelical support for the U.S. backing an Israeli attack was stronger than it was among mainline Protestants and Catholics, each of whom favored neutrality over support for Israel (52 percent to 42 percent).

In an interview last week with The Atlantic, Obama said the U.S. will continue to advocate a political strategy that would pressure Iran into permanently ceasing its nuclear ambitions.

“Our argument is going to be that it is important for us to see if we can solve this thing permanently, as opposed to temporarily,” Obama said. “And the only way, historically, that a country has ultimately decided not to get nuclear weapons without constant military intervention has been when they themselves take [nuclear weapons] off the table.”

The President's comments came as Israel signaled that it is growing impatient with sanctions and will use force to eliminate Iran's nuclear capabilities.

"I would ask that we all remember the weightiness of these issues; the stakes involved for Israel, for America, and for the world. Already, there is too much loose talk of war... For the sake of Israel's security, America's security, and the peace and security of the world, now is not the time for bluster; now is the time to let our increased pressure sink in, and to sustain the broad international coalition that we have built,” Obama said.

Netanyahu said he welcomed Obama's speech. "For them you're the great Satan, we're the little Satan," Netanyahu said. "For them, we are you and you are us. And you know something, Mr. President? At least on this last point, I think they're right. We are you and you are us. ... Israel and America stand together."

Israeli president Shimon Peres also addressed AIPAC Sunday saying there was “no space” between the position of the U.S. and Israel on the question of Iran, but he was far more forceful on his assessment of Iran as a threat.

“Iran is an evil, cruel, morally corrupt regime. It is based on destruction and is an affront to human dignity,” Peres told AIPAC. “It must be stopped. And it will be stopped.”

Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, and Newt Gingrich will address AIPAC Tuesday. Responding to Obama's statements, both Romney and Santorum called for tougher U.S. actions against Iran.

According to a poll I saw last week only 19% of Israelis support invading Iran. Why are US evangelicals so much more in favor of war than actual Israelis?

Of course, I support Israel's continued existence in security. But Israel cannot expect the United States to go to war in its support if it refuses to coordinate with the U.S. its foreign policy toward enemies like Iran. I for one will not support following Israel into another Mideast war that starts because of its unilateral aggressive action toward Iran.

Adam, you are not understanding the poll. 19 of percent of all Israelis favored a go-it-alone strike by Israel. But 42 percent supported a strike only if there is U.S. backing, and only 34 percent opposed any strike.

A combined 61% support taking military action against Iran to prevent them from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Evangelicals believe in military support of Israel because they read their Bibles. It says in Zechariah that he who touches Israel touches the apple (pupil) of God's eye.

Well, well; What have we here all over again?

Same old, same old! "Christians-evangelicals" in a state of panic and mass hysteria, with their brains completed disengaged, in an all out support of Military actions here, there and everywhere. Where is the Real threat?

The Adoration, Enamoring, Fascination, Idolizing of the Military as long as that Military is made up entirely of SEOSEC's!

It is very easy to be so dispose! Especially when the Probabilities; of a son, brother, father, uncle, cousin, best friend, son in law, boy friend, fellow worker, fellow student being Drafted or Deployed are totally Null! Better yet; When your own Probabilities are the same as aforementioned! Because the Military represents a 1% of the total Populace and is all volunteer. It took a true soldier like McArthur to say that nobody longs for Peace more than a soldier in war.

How easy it is for so many "christines", to want to send SEOSEC's to wars all over, there and everywhere!

The Military Industrial Complex that President Ikesenhower foretold, is a well oiled Monster machine. With tentacles that go deep into the minds, souls and pockets of churchianity today.

The Phony thing about it is; that many Ministers and Preachers who in case of a Draft, would probably be Exempt again, along with Temporary CO's, are some of the most Vociferous supporters of this charade. It was Not so back in the old days of the Draft.

But is easier to backslide than to have enough of a "backbone", to heed the words of the Apostle:

1 Tim. 2:1 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone--

1 Tim. 2:2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

The ONLY way to end this Charade is to bring back the Draft. A TRUE Draft that in the words of Bonaparte make "every man a Defender of the Country". A TRUE Draft without Exemptions.

But that is Not going to happen, right?

.

Nice speech Salero, but no one in this article or in these comments called for America going to war with anyone. Evangelicals support the right of Israel to defend itself against an aggressor who has sworn to obliterate it and is actively developing nuclear weapons to do so. If Israel needs our assistance, President Obama has sworn to do so. Evangelicals are quite committed to the survival of Israel. We stood by in the 1940s when 6 million Jews were marched off to gas ovens, America will not do that again.

rickd, I say again. Why are US evangelical more in favor of war with Iran than those in Israel. Only 19% think that they should attack first. But less think they should got to war with Iran than evangelicals do.

This is rooted in a mis-reading of scripture and we need to stop it. War with Iran will not make Israel safe.

rickd; When and where did BO swore to assist Israel? Was that part of the Oath of Office?

Just a hint: as per article 2 section 1 of the Constitution.

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

I don't do speeches and was Not intended to be nice but rather poignant.

rickd, I'm concern about what I perceive, as you having short memory problems, your flip-flop and your very particular understanding of WW2.

Please review your 1st comment and then compare it to the 2nd in response to mine. If you don't see the contradiction, others will, just like I did!

.

read the poll. Among evangelicals, nearly two-thirds said the U.S. should support Israel IF it attacked Iran. It did not say 2/3 believed in going to war with Iran.

That is a big IF. It is not a call to war and no one is calling for war anyway, only taking out Iran's nuclear weapon facility. It is true, evangelicals are deeply committed to protecting, defending and coming to the assistance of the Jewish people especially IF they feel threatened by nuclear weapons. This is a tiny country surrounded with bloodthirsty fanatics who hate every living Jew.

Again, 61% of Israelis support a strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities. (19% without America’s support, 42% if America is ready to back them)

Obama told the influential American Israel Public Affairs Committee that he has "Israel's back" and is unalterably opposed to Iran getting a nuclear weapon. "Iran's leaders should know that I do not have a policy of containment; I have a policy to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. I've made clear time and again during the course of my presidency, I will not hesitate to use force when it is necessary to defend the United States and its interests."”

Salero, I am curious, are you a holucast denier? What is your problem with my understanding of WW2? In fact, that is essentially what benjamin Netanyahu said in his AIPAC speech yesterday. Did you watch it? Did you watch Obama’s speech?

When looking at the Iranian situation you just have to look at Iranian actions and words. They have repeatedly from many avenues of speech spewed hatred towards Israel. They have spoken to the world and to their people that their goal is the destruction of Israel, a U.S. ally and free democracy in the region. Should we not believe what they say? Israel had not called for the destruction of Iran, or Arabs, Persians, Muslims or any such thing, yet Israel is villified because they want to survive? Evangelicals support Israel because they see them as God's people and their heritage by faith. They don't and should not hate or wish destruction on anyone and war is a last resort but still a possibility in this world where corruption permeates everywhere. God is the same yesterday, today and forever. God will stand by Israel and those who bless Israel just as His word proclaims.

Why not stay with the issue at hand and the points I make rickd? Can you answer any or all of the following?

Is it true or Not that calls for Military actions (eufemism for limited war) have been made?
Is it true or Not, that as long as the Military is made up of SEOSEC's is very Easy to send them to wars there and everywhere?
Is it true or Not that a return to the Draft will make war less popular among "christines-evangelicals"?
Is it true or Not that back in the days, there were "Exemptions" for ministers, seminarists and CO's?
Do you agree or Not with Napoleon and the Bible that every man is a Defender of the Country?

Is it true or Not, that Iran is Not a real threat to the US of A?
Is it true or Not, that the Main Beneficiaries of Military actions are the Industries of the Military Industrial Complex?
Do you know who was Ikesenhower?

Puff, puff all of this typing is hard work and I'm just starting, I have just scratch the surface of these issues.

.

Is it true or Not, that in spite of their "Support" for Military actions (Eufemism for limited war), against Iran IF it does attacks Israel, young WASP's are NOT flocking in by the thousands to join the AVA?

Is it true or Not, that an estimated 20% of the current US AV Military is Foreign born?

Is it true or Not, that 60% of the Infantry who will have to bear the worst in a War (limited or not), is made up of Black and Hispanic-americans?

Was Napoleon in the Right when he stated that "EVERY man is a Defender of the Country?

Why are "Evangelicals" OK with sending women into Combat?

What does the Bible says?

Why is my keyboard smoking?

.

Is attacking Iran a good idea?
Not according to Meir Dagan former Israel "Intelligence" Chief. Check this out: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-18563_162-57393833/ex-israeli-spy-chief-bombing-iran-a-stupid-idea/?tag=cbsnewsSectionContent.0

So then again; Is Iran a real threat to the good old US of A? The answer is a clear, definite and resounding NO. Is Not even an imminent threat to Israel right now? How can it be? Their Navy consist of half a dozen Soviet era ships, they barely have an air force and it will take week for their Army to make it to Israel. And that Only if Iraq lets them march thru, which is highly, highly unlikely. Muslims in general and arabs in particular don't get along among themselves most of the time.

So what are these calls from "christines" for Military Support IF Israel is attack? The answer to that, has to do with what Pres. Ikesenhower in his farewell address to the Nation in 1960 the MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX. It was a 15 minutes SPEECH, that is available in YouTube. My father told me about it.

Does the influence of the Military Industrial Complex reach into the churches? The answer is a resounding YES! It reaches deep into their Ministerial Payrolls!

Why is my Keyboard smoking? Good Lord in Heaven!

salero, Iran just needs one or two ships carrying a couple of nuclear missiles (which they have), and send one off in the air over the US, it's called an EMP. It would wipe out everything electrical in the whole US, sending us back to the 1800's, and we'd never recover from it in our lifetimes. They certainly can send one to hit a major city also, such as NYC. If you haven't read about the dangers of an EMP, you should catch up on it. And obama has made it even easier for them by unilaterally dismantling 85% of our nuclear missiles and also telling the Russians our once nuclear secrets. We have very little defense-wise and he is making huge cuts into the military budget, which you're probably thrilled about. He has put this country into more peril than you can imagine.

In addition, he signed the NDAA act, which makes it possible for the president to arrest any American citizen, take away their citizenship, send them to a foreign country, and detain them for an indefinite time, with no trial. He is taking away as many of our rights as he possibly can, he is ripping and shredding the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and everyone is silent about it, and they're worrying about what they'll wear to church on Sunday.

What is a nation like Israel that faces this "existential threat" posed by Iran to do?

Israel has been here before. There are at least two prior events that threatened the very existence of the Jewish state. In one case, the Israelis of the time successfully fended off the aggressor. In the other, the result was total loss with the resulting disappearance of a Jewish homeland for nearly two millennia. A more detailed account of the results and the lessons of attempted diplomacy are provided by: www.jesustheheresy.com

Salerno it is Christian, not Christine. It is Ike Eisenhower (Dwight D. Eisenhower), not Ikesenhower. It is, “do you know who Ike Eisenhower was”, not “Do you know who was Ikesenhower?” It is euphemism, not eufemism. It is seminarians, not seminarists. I have no idea what SEOSECs are and neither does any dictionary or online resource. It is short-term memory problems, not short memory problems. It is, “where did Obama swear”, not “where did BO swore”. “It is very easy to be so dispose?” What?

Ok, so you are not a native english speaker, not a problem. You question the reality of the holocaust in World War 2. Fine. However, makes me suspicious about who you really are, where you might be writing from and what your agenda really is. Most christians do not consistently mis-spell Christian as Christine. Salerno, did you know that previous Israeli strikes against nuclear installations in Iraq and Syria successfully forced those countries to drop their nuclear programs without launching war? Christians support the right of Israelis to defend themselves and we are their allies.

Your keyboard may be smoking but it is not evangelicals that are “in a state of panic and mass hysteria, with their brains completed disengaged.”

rickd,

"christines" = as an Euphemism for what I see as carnal, fake, hollow, spurious, shallow and worldly "christians".

Since real "Christians", usually and most likelly, will be praying for peace rather than promoting and taking sides in worldly affairs and politics. Especially since neither Israel, Iran or the good old US of A, are in any form, sort or way heavenly celestial kingdoms.

BO is Internet acrostic for Mr. Barack Obama and you haven't show any proof as to when and where, did he ever swear to defend, support or take side with Israel.

Seminarist: is listed in the the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary as another word for seminarian. Go check it out.

SEOSEC is for, Someone Else Or Someone Else's Child. Which appears to be your frame of mind as well as the majority of "christines".

I speak, read, write, understand, translate and interpret 2 languages, Spanish and English. I can read and understand some Latin and italian, a little french and romanian and a lot of portuguese. That's a whole of typing I do sometimes, besides my average of 45 WPM. WPM is for Words Per Minute.

Your pointing to misstypes and language error, are nothing more than the typical smoke screen, since is clear you can't answer any of the questions I posed.

Now; Can you answer at least one of the questions?
Do you agree or disagree?
Can you prove me wrong, other than in my misspellings?
Have you seen the Video of Ike's (nickname for Eisenhower) in YouTube? Is only 15 minutes.
Do you need more time to engage your "gray matter" (Euphemism) another word for brain?
I have so many questions, but my Keyboard is smoking again!

Good luck to you!

.

rickd,

Did you see the Video of Mr. Meir Dagan, former Israeli chief of Intelligence?
Do you agree or disagree?
Do you believe or thing that you have a better perspective than him?
Do you know better than BO what the situation is?

I think this may be my last post in this blog!

Nobody has answers to my questionnaire, that's French for a long list or set of questions.

.

Addictions, gluttony, Obesity, laziness, heresies, debt, bigotry, racism, crime, poverty, armed and mentally unstable radical militias are a whole lot more of a threat to this Nation than Iran.

All of the above is correctly spelled.

How much of the above has infiltrated "churchianity"? Now that's a whole other story!

I am an Iranian pastor and i am ministering to a Iranian congregation with hundred of believers from Muslim background. There are an evangelical comunity in Iran which is growing inspite of many pressures.
I am amazed about the polls and how evangelicals can support involvment of US in war against Iran.In our churches we are praying for peace and intervention of our Lord and I think that evangelicals of Americaca can mobilizing a prayer movement against war in region instead of supporting a military action.I understand the seriusness of situation but i can not understand that why pacifism and love for enemis is a forgotten concept in our evangelical convictions and suporting militarism will only strenghtening muslim fundamentalism and by reading such polls our Muslim neighbores accuse us of partiality in a such sensitive issue.I look at my evangelical brothers in US to see what is a mature reaction in such issues but among mainstrean churches and catholic there is more divergence and antiwar trends.War is always horrible with unpredictable results. And there are a growing community of evangelical Christians in Iran which will be harmed badly because of war...
