Just Like Summer Camp…Well, Sort of

When I was growing up, I went to Bible camp every summer. Going to camp was one of the absolute highlights of my year. It was right up there with Christmas, my birthday, the last day of school, and the first snowfall.

So what made camp so great? Well, it wasn’t the activities. I could enjoy many of those things at home. It wasn’t the sleeping accommodations—sleeping bags and 3-inch-thick noisy mattresses are a novelty for only a few nights. The food was…well, it was camp food. And I’m not crazy about marshmallows.

There’s just something about getting away with a bunch of people who love Jesus. I’m sure many of you can relate to this: I loved camp because it was the only place in my life where I spent a week surrounded by people who were different from me in many ways but loved the same God I did. My camp friends understood the challenges of being a Christian kid. They shared my desire to grow in faith and live for Jesus. We grew together, strengthened by our friendships and the bonds of sharing life for a week.

That’s sort of like the way I felt last year at the Synergy conference.

What is Synergy? Synergy is kind of like summer camp for grown-up women, but without the marshmallows and the sleeping bags and thin mattresses. And you probably won’t need bug spray. Oh, and no campfires allowed, sorry. No horses or archery either.

Okay, so maybe it’s not all that much like summer camp. But Synergy is a place where women leaders can understand one another, share, and grow. Synergy’s mission is “To connect, equip, and encourage women in vocational ministry to be effective leaders and laborers for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” At this year’s conference, the focus will be on our identity and calling as women God has created for his service. I promise you, no one will walk away the same.

Synergy is a different kind of women’s conference. At this event, you’ll find yourself challenged, not entertained. You’ll have opportunities to connect with your peers and to think deeply about the world around us. You’ll be blessed to see such variety in the women God has created and gifted for his service--and yet with one heart for the ministry God has called us to.

Please consider attending this year’s event. The GFL team and I would love to meet many Gifted for Leadership women at Synergy 2008. And as we post to this blog from the event, we would love to have your voice in the conversation.

For more information, click on the Synergy tab at the top of this page or click here to register for the conference.

I hope to see you there!

Thanks Amy for your "promotion" of camp! As you know camp is great for establishing long lasting relationships, both with friends and with the Creator. In fact, I think there is no better tool for the local church than a camp experience, whether you're talking about a kid's summer camp, men's or women's retreat, hayride, campout, etc. God loves to use his creation to teach His kids. Best of luck on Synergy!

This sounds like a great opportunity for women. Our identity is foundational for discovering our purpose and destiny. I wish I could attend but another engagement is scheduled for me. Will we be able to order CD's or DVD's of sessions?

This sounds exactly like what I need; I would love to go to "camp" with you! Unfortunately, I'm learning about this a little too late - it's too far away, and too close in time. Hopefully next time. However, please share the experience with us.

Thanks for your amazing work inspiring and equipping women to follow their heart and their God.

I'm in Ellen's "camp" - too late notice and too far away! Is this an annual event? Any chance another Synergy might be held mid-country or west coast? This kind of training and encouragement is just what I and my team need!
