April 30, 2009He Qi: Holy Spirit Coming
Holy Spirit Coming, by He Qi.
He Qi's work, which Christianity Today has previously covered, is on display at Wheaton College until June 9. More of his paintings are in our slideshow, "The Dragon in the Belly: Patriarchs, Judges, and Kings."
"If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever - the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
- John 14:15-17
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
- Acts 2:1-4

I have been a fan of He Qi for several years now. His work is very powerful. Thank you for posting this!

Hi Qi's painting is good.
A distinct feature I find is the split tongues fire that rests on the heads. It can be compared to the Trident, the Hindu Relgion relates it with one of their deities' weapon.
When it is said,"Cloven tongues,"(KJV)it is generally thought to be "Split" in "two." The similarity of a trident, according to me seem to be odd.
Yet, no offence meant. Artists have their freedom of expression.

I immediately interepreted the flame shapes as doves, not tridents. He Qi's work is wonderful!

Tridents definitely have a pagan history and association, but "cloven," as used to describe the tongues of fire on Pentecost, means "separated into parts or divided up from a common source," the Holy Spirit. That comes from Zodhaites' Complete Word Study Dictionary, New Testament. Whenever something doesn't seem quite right in Scripture, a check into a good OT or NT dictionary helps a lot sometimes, as in this case.
