Detail from Supper at Emmaus by Michelangelo da Caravaggio
Why did Christianity arise, and why did it take the shape it did? The early Christians themselves reply: We exist because of Jesus' resurrection. ? There is no evidence for a form of early Christianity in which the resurrection was not a central belief. Nor was this belief, as it were, bolted on to Christianity at the edge. It was the central driving force, informing the whole movement.
- N. T. Wright, The Challenge of Jesus
When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?"
They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, "It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon." Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.
- Luke 24:30-35

Comments
"....while He talked with us on the road". If the Church would engage in more of this type of fellowship with one another.....real fellowship, not "ministering" to one another as is so common and objectifying of people, but rather "keeping it real", as we are all in the same boat with each other, saved by God's grace. If the Holy Spirit is within us, He will make the presence of Jesus known and we will receive His comfort.....if we let Him. Love one another.....

Jesus comes in as a guest -- but quickly assumes the role of host in this story and in our life.
