June 12, 2009Women's Groups Lash Out at Letterman in Palin's Defense
Letterman joked that Alex Rodriguez 'knocked up' one of her daughters.
Sarah Pulliam
Several women's groups have joined Sarah Palin's fight with David Letterman over his joke that Palin's daughter got "knocked up" by Alex Rodriguez during their recent trip to New York.
"It's worse than poor taste; it reflects ugliness in him. He would never say something like that about a liberal woman," president of Concerned Women for America Wendy Wright said in a statement. "But rather than deal with issues and ideas, he denigrates her as a human being."
The Alaska governor characterized Letterman's jokes as a reference to "statutory rape" since the only child with her at the game was her 14-year-old daughter, Willow. Letterman said the following night that the joke was in "poor taste," but he says he was joking about 18-year-old Bristol Palin, not Willow.
Palin appeared on NBC's Today show today, calling Letterman's apology "a weak excuse" and saying they were "a degrading comment on all young women."
"A generally understood rule of politics is that the children are off-limits," said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List. "Why are Palin's children an exception?"
Even the National Organization for Women has taken to defending Palin. "The sexualization of girls and women in the media is reaching new lows these days -- it is exploitative and has a negative effect on how all women and girls are perceived and how they view themselves," the statement says.
Letterman had also joked that Palin had the style of a "slutty flight attendant." She has declined an invitation by Letterman to appear on his show.

The Bible says:
Philemon 1:18- "If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account" (which simply means to let God handle it)
Colossians 4:6- "Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man" (which means simply to pray before speaking or answering every offense; maybe God will direct you to rebuke (correct) a person or He may in fact require you to be silent and forgive that person)
2 Corinthians 2:6-10 "Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many. So that contrawise ye ought RATHER to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow. Wherefore I beseech you that you would confirm your love toward him. For to this end also did I write, that I might know the PROOF of you, whether ye be obedient in all things. To whom ye forgive anything, I forgive also: for if I forgave anything, to whom I forgave it for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ"- (however long this may be, I think Paul makes the point very clear; As Christians we have an obligation to FORGIVE and another obligation TO PRAY- Gossipping about this foolish situation is unproductive and contrary to the WILL OF GOD for us as Christians)
JESUS said in Matthew 5:44 "...Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you..." - (this is self explanatory)
Governor Sarah Palin is more than a woman, she is a LEADER. Her Femininity or humanity is not the issue. Her nobility as a LEADER is now in question. She is going to be held to a higher standard as a LEADER versus David Letterman; a comedian and entertainer. Despite the irresponsibility he may be accused of, it serves no good purpose for Governor Palin to dignify foolishness with more foolishness. Let us remove emotion, insecurity, and defensiveness from the equation and be mindful that spiritually both of them should be responsibly aware of their positions in the public eye and should both be more mature and conscious about the power of the words. Governor Palin should honor his invitation and go to his show and forgive him in front of the World. This is LEADERSHIP and certainly the Christian thing to do. And (then) perhaps people's opinions of her displays of immaturity would change for the better...

I watched Letterman and his apology might not have been complete, but I think he was sincere and I think that what he said was as close to an apology as any male is capable of. I think Sarah Palin discredits herself by her reaction.

Any male is capable of?
Wow.
Posted By: Will K. | June 12, 2009 10:01 PM
Sorry. It should have read: of which any man is capable.

DAVID LETTERMAN'S HATE, ETC. !
David Letterman's hate is as old as some ancient Hebrew prophets.
Speaking of anti-Semitism, it's Jerry Falwell and other fundy leaders who've gleefully predicted that in the future EVERY nation will be against Israel (an international first?) and that TWO-THIRDS of all Jews will be killed, right?
Wrong! It's the ancient Hebrew prophet Zechariah who predicted all this in the 13th and 14th chapters of his book! The last prophet, Malachi, explains the reason for this future Holocaust that'll outdo even Hitler's by stating that "Judah hath dealt treacherously" and "the Lord will cut off the man that doeth this" and asks "Why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother?"
Haven't evangelicals generally been the best friends of Israel and Jewish persons? Then please explain the recent filthy, hate-filled, back-stabbing tirades by David Letterman (and Sandra Bernhard) against a leading evangelical named Sarah Palin, and explain why most Jewish leaders have seemingly condoned Palin's continuing "crucifixion"!
While David and Sandra are tragically turning comedy into tragedy, they are also helping to speed up and fulfill the Final Holocaust a la Zechariah and Malachi, thus helping to make the Bible even more believable!

Monica, do you seriously think that Letterman can speed up the return of Christ? Do you think our efforts (or sins) can change the plan of God? Really?

So glad to hear (lol) that, after a week of silence, NOW found its "voice". What a bunch of phonies!
Posted By: Noreen | June 15, 2009 3:47 PM
Evangelist Moore has fallen into the good Christian trap "Turn the other cheek" We as Christians have turned our cheeks so much now our skin is raw to the bone. Did not Jesus rant on the money changers? It is time for the Christian to have a voice and stamp out the corruption and call it what it is. God surely did not stand by and let the egyptians conquer the Jews. The Jews fought and held their ground and it is time for Christians to do the same.

As a survivor of childhood rape, these kinds of comments casually dropped by a person with such celebrity as Letterman astound me. I have enjoyed watching Letterman a number of times in the past, but do not know how I can bring myself sit in front of his face after this. Hahaha, Letterman, you are SO funny! And it makes it ALRIGHT that it was an 18 year-old you were talking about instead of a 14 year-old. The world NEEDS more humor that makes it seem okay to use a woman's body indiscriminately!
Posted By: Marianne | June 15, 2009 4:51 PM
I disagree that Sarah Palin should go on Letterman's show. The Bible says to not stand in the path of sinners nor to sit in the seat of scoffers. I believe he will make an even bigger "joke" of Sarah and her family. He is a very immature person.
We are to choose our battles. I think this is one worth fighting on behalf of the dignity of young girls. Especially Sarah's daughters. You don't mess with a Momma who loves her children and would lay down their lives to protect their own. As I believe is the case for Sarah Palin.
I say may God fight the battle for Sarah as she stands for what is right. Go Sarah!

Good christians must stand up for public figures like Palin and Prejean when they are under attack. We do not have to be doormats.
For example, the People's Miss Calif. has gay marriage bullies on the ropes now. What can you do? You can post comments at link now to let your voice for family be heard! http://tinyurl.com/mdmrxu

As to David Letterman...in our minds he has become the best comedian around and now we will not miss one of his shows.
He is witty and right on! He is topical and sophisticated.
The one thing fun-dam-mentalists are not--- would be sophisticated.
They also have no sense of humor.
They should just turn off our fave and go elsewhere. Perhaps Trinity Broadcasting where they can see the phonies of the hour.
Posted By: Votres | June 15, 2009 6:55 PM
Why is anyone surprised. Letterman had a baby out of wedlock and didn't marry the mother until, what, a few years later. There's the real truth as to what he feels about women. If it was his money he could have made an agreement with the women. The so called joke was worst than sick, insulting to any woman, actually calling Palin's whichever daughter a slut. Wasn't his wife in the same category before they got married according to his joke. Palin's older daughter did it with a guy she loved not with the whole football team. Yes, she committed a sin but Letterman committed a worst sin using comedy to mask his indirect hit at Palin. Christians don't need to accept this and certainly can call Letterman on it. These so called comedians are getting filty mouthed on t.v. Has anybody noticed this lately. They're not in a closed nightclub with adults, they're on national tv with everybody watching including women and kids. Kill the locker room sick jokes or make the jokes about your own kids not somebody elses.

About the "slutty flight attendant" remark: wasn't he also insulting flight attendants?
Posted By: Pastor Doug | June 15, 2009 11:55 PM
I disagree in comparing our response to Jesus in the temple. Jesus' outrage was almost always directed at hypocritical religious leaders. He did not spend time ranting against Caesar or against the Roman Culture. He did not engage in politics. Christians should as much as possible be "above the fray" in these situations. Responding assertively but also with love.

Wait a minute. Sure, Letterman's remarks were in atrocious taste and insulting. But remember, Palin chose to parade her pregnant teenage daughter on the public stage for political gain and as a role model for what? Effective abstinence? Give me a break.
Posted By: Sam | June 16, 2009 1:01 PM
Was Sarah Palin supposed to stick her daughter in the closet and pretend it hadn't happened? I think she did what many other Christian mothers have done when their daughters got pregnant out of wedlock--she acknowledged the sin of fornication and supported and loved her daughter as any parent should!
Just because we preach abstinence doesn't mean that we are stupid enough to believe Christian girls aren't having out-of-wedlock sex, too. We're hoping to help young women avoid sexual activity until marriage. Why that has become such a joke these days is beyond me! The girls who do practice abstinence do not get pregnant, have abortions or contract SID's.
As for those who do become sexually active--Christian or not--we love the person and hate the sin--why? Because it can cause lifelong scars--with many complications. I prefer to believe that if a few girls are able to demonstrate self-control and either wait until marriage or until they are mature enough to make an adult decision about it then we as a society are better off and so are the young women.
David Letterman's comments were vulgar and sexist! He might think twice before he again makes such a denigrating statement about young women and (flight attendants)!

JESUS said in Matthew 5:44 "...Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you..." - (this is self explanatory)...I forgive you Jerry Sabo and Sue as perhaps you missed this scripture...
The "Good Christian 'Trap'" you eluded to is the REQUIRED works of Christianity. The Battles fought by the Jews where clearly ordained by God in order for His Glory to be known to both heathen and pagan. Are you suggesting that we as Christians take up arms against gossip and rude remarks? Certainly you did not get that from JESUS. Read Exodus 14:14 for clarity on the point I attempted to make on June 12th. Some battles are best fought by God. We have an obligation to pray and LIVE by the Word of God. Whether or not David Letterman lives by that Word is irrelevant WE WILL be held accountable for what WE say and what is in our HEARTS. If UNFORGIVENESS has stained any of our hearts as Christians what then should we say to The Lord on Judgement Day?
Edification means to build up. Insulting another Christian for choosing a mature answer to a foolish response to a non-believer's comedy or tragedy does not help to build up the kingdom of God and it certainly hasn't helped our sister Sarah Palin, now has it?
This is why we have to pray daily for them that throw verbal rocks at us and lift each other up to ignore foolishness. We have a huge fight on our hands against the real and invasive spirit of the anti-Christ and this is where WE NEED TO FOCUS our attention. The Bible teaches us that LOVE covers a multitude of sin (fault); even that of David Letterman and Sarah Palin...
God's Peace be With You and With Your Spirits
